It is silly just how excited I get about sitting down to spin yarn after dinner.
Even sillier is how I turn into a dog that just heard the word "walk" when the chance to go to a fibre shop appears.

We are very proud to announce our charity: Fibershed! This organization reexamines the textiles industry as an educator and advocate for the re-emergence of soil-to-soil systems. 🙌✨
Read below about how soil-to-soil benefits humans and the earth!
Tumblr media
Soil-to-soil systems can become a solution to climate change by employing carbon farming practices specific to local environmental and cultural needs. Food, fiber systems and their supply chains can transform from net emitters to reducers of greenhouse gasses.

I’m both a local fiber grower/farmer and an artist. I have an increasing number of products I offer that meet the criteria of the local fiber shed. •fiber animals raised on my farm and a few local farms. •my shearer is local, and I’m the local labor for prep & finish work, even my soap is local. •my pattern designer & mill are local. •my fiber shed yarns and roving come in a number of colors based on the colors of the fiber animals, and not dyed. Most of my work is hand dyed not with natural colors, so please feel welcome to have me show you my fiber shed things. I love what I do and am always happy to answer questions! #avalonspringsfarm #fibershed #localfiberfarm #marylandfiberfarm #chesapeakefiberandyarn #yarn #roving #angoragoats #llama #coloredangoragoats #alpaca #sheep #chesapeakefibershed #shoplocal #chesapeakefibercrafters #svff2022 #shenandoahvalleyfiberfestival #naturalfiber #naturalfibercolors https://www.instagram.com/p/CixTHcDrjjW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So it turns out that there actually might be economically real demand for dye plants grown locally. The regional Fibershed groups (inspired by the author of the book, which originated the term and the movement) had a booth at the Sheep and Wool festival, and I chatted them up. They said that 1. it's difficult to get dye materials grown locally, and they've been trying, and 2. there's actually a natural dye business like an hour from here. When I got home I explored the website. They're a wholesale company mostly, dyeing in large batches for companies, but they actively have a program to partner with farmers to grow dye plants.
Yeah so that's something worth exploring. Not tryina get ahead of myself, but imagining the south field in great stripes of flowering plants is pretty appealing, you gotta admit.

first third of 2022 in books
1. The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories, Volume 4 [loved this, such an assortment of batshittery] 2. Fibershed: Growing a Movement of Farmers, Fashion Activists, and Makers for a New Textile Economy, Rebecca Burgess with Courtney White 3. A Marvellous Light, Freya Marske [I think I have already talked about this one with everyone already but. shockingly dull considering everything about it] 4. feeld, Jos Charles 5. The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen, Sean Sherman 6. The Hellion's Waltz, Olivia Waite [adored the first third of this and then it got boring and improbable] 7. Plucked: A History of Hair Removal, Rebecca M. Herzig [I’m still thinking about this one, huge recommendation] 8. Sudden Death, Álvaro Enrigue (trans. Natasha Wimmer) [amazing? this teetered on the edge of not working but I thought it fell to the right side nearly every time] 9. Tough Guy, Rachel Reid [she’s so good at this! it is not always my thing but she’s like an old-school rpf writer, so solid] 10. Death By Silver, Amy Griswold and Melissa Scott [reread. god these were even better than I remembered] 11. Death at the Dionysus Club, Amy Griswold and Melissa Scott [reread] 12. Betsy Was a Junior, Maud Hart Lovelace [not a reread! I never read the high school ones but they are so much fun] 13. Think of England, KJ Charles [reread. just imagine here a row of sparkle heart emojis] 14. Betsy and Joe, Maud Hart Lovelace 15. The People in the Trees, Hanya Yanagihara [would’ve likely never read this one if it wasn’t for @vermiculated‘s recommendation but. totally enthralling and I think deeply effective at its conceit] 16. Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton [her finding the half-written letter is going to live in my mind forever, it turns out]

I have recently been listening to this highly engaging book (Fibershed by Rebecca Burgess) on the textile industry and its impact on the world and its occupants.
If you have ever wondered about how it all works (or rather doesn't) on a deeper level, then give it a listen and I would love to hear your thoughts.
Let's all find a way to help slow down fashion together and reconnect with the process and our enviroment ^_^

The Benefits of Buying Locally Made Clothing
The Benefits of Buying Locally Made Clothing @Fibershed @Fash_Rev @fashionrevolution.org #sustainablefashion #localclothing #ethicalfashion #slowfashion #ecofriendlyfashion
Sustainable fashion is not just about the materials used in clothing production. It is also about the conditions in which the clothes are made, the transportation used to get them to the consumer, and the impact on the local economy. Buying locally made clothing is a great way to support sustainable fashion practices and reap many benefits. One of the primary benefits of buying locally made…

I made a pretty pretty thing. It debuted at the NJ Fibershed barn crawl this weekend. I am taking commissions on it, I think? Please note, all of the items that comprise this horned fiber flower crown are HANDMADE so the price is upwards of $100 (at a min). I am trying to assemble an outfit for the NY renfaire this coming season as well. Something to go with it extraordinarily well! HMU if you have suggestions or would like a crown!

Still not enjoying Fibershed as a book, but it does have me thinking more about the subject, about the ways in which making clothing within the constraints of a gutted US cloth and clothing industry can inspire creativity. Got me looking up patterns for crocheted tank tops and wondering if there's a craftsperson or small business or there that would be interested if I grew dyestuffs. We have no interest in direct marketing ourselves, so the prospect of partnering with people and selling more durable goods is much more interesting.
I think movements are always more successful when they focus on what can be joyous about creating better ways of living. A movement focused on adding beautiful and creative local energy to our wardrobes is, to me, much more interesting than the author's personal project of wearing only locally sourced clothing.
