hey tumblr fibrecraft friends. Anyone have some wisdom on softening a finished linen item? It's fingerweight linen yarn, and the piece is really pretty, but wow is it stiff. Internet is saying to soak it in vinegar/salt/lemon before a wash cycle. but. this is hand crocheted, and I don't generally put those in the washer

Socks!
Tumblr media
These turned out pretty well! i like what the pattern ended up being, and the colors are nice if a little more christmassy than expected. i feel like i'm getting a handle on the basic sock concept. time to take another run at the fingerweight yarn?
also please enjoy my hairy legs

i did fuck up on the gusset, and the damnable thing is that i did it intentionally — i took an extra stitch from between the heel flap and the instep, in the hopes that it would shrink the hole, but, uh, that backfired. oops! at least I know not to do that on the next socks
really, considering i was rageweeping in frustration trying to knit on dpns back in december, this is all very satisfying. it's a fun little hobby and god knows i always need socks

This is me writing.
I just need to step away and figure out something by focusing on something else, like a little beaded cuff made with size 1 needles, small glass beads, and fingerweight yarn.
This is part of my process…I guess?
ADDENDUM: It’s also me, trying to figure out how to answer two asks: What fic is the best introduction to me as a writer; and if I have any writing advice.
Oy!

I had to air drop one of these videos to my iPhone. The whole idea is to be able to pick up this heavyweight just with one finger. Begin with your little finger and progress through each fingers of the hand. In the first of the videos I’m not so successful because I’m trying to lift from one side and a rather unbalanced. But this has also give me an idea how to pick up a fallen weight with one finger. It will take some practice meanwhile have some fun watching my videos. #onefingerchallenge #onefingerliftchallenge #fingerweights https://www.instagram.com/p/CURzyCvDjiR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Sometimes life is like 550 yards of fingerweight yarn. One wrong move or inexperienced tug can land you with an impossible mess that takes hours to make sense of.
And sometimes those around you will look to you in exhaustion and exasperation at the mess you've made of your life. Sometimes they'll help, but most of the time they'll berate you for not knowing better. They won't see any progress made as an accomplishment.
So you have to. You have to have your own pride in the fact that you're cleaning up that mess. You have to find your own happiness when you find that end and can get the ball rolling. You have to pat your own back for not giving up on the huge task ahead.
And it will hurt, every jab at your ineptitude might make you want to give up on the whole thing. But you've got this. Every time you drop the ball or lose your place, you're absolutely allowed to be proud that the mess hasn't convinced you to stop. Even when you feel like you're making too slow a progress, you can let yourself feel content with the pace you've set.
You can take breaks, you can break down, you can ask for help. And if no one is proud of you for the progress you've made, know that I am. If no one recognizes how hard it is to bite down the urge to give up, know that some gal is over here sitting in a 550 yard mess of yarn not knowing your exact problems but hoping the best for you.
Your progress matters. Three steps back and one step forward might still land you behind, but taking another step forward is still worth celebrating.

Many of you know that I have a massive addiction to crochet 🧶 and that I am also on my own zero waste journey. I am trying to reduce my use of #singleuseplastics in my life and also inform others of what they can do. You might well ask what this has to with the mandalas in the pictures. Well, it’s to do with my obsession with not throwing things away and also crochet. I have a huge 🧶 stash in my house that I have collected over many years. This does however give me somewhat of a dilemma. As someone who is trying to reduce the amount of plastic I use this leads to the obvious problem of acrylic yarn 🧶! Well I have lots of it and if I don’t use it then someone else will. Who is to say that if I give it away it will not be used on a project that could be said to be sustainable in as much that I can make market bags from all this yarn. I can also make decorative items and blankets among some of the items my hooks can hook up. I also have cotton/ acrylic mixes; wool; bamboo viscose; and probably some others as well like silk. My current plan am I would love your thoughts on it if you have managed to get to the end of this essay 😂 is: - make #marketbags and bags out of the yarn that is the best weight for them. - use all my #cottonyarn as far as practical for #reusablemakeuppads,#showerscrubbie and a new line of #soapsavers with some gorgeous soaps in them from @treebeeapothecary - make #mandala hoops from all my fingerweight yarn of whatever material it happens to be. - have a play with what is left and maybe make up some fun and funky blankets. - watch out for my #Christmasbauble strings. I’ve tried to be creative with using up odds and sods of yarn 🧶 and I think they look pretty cool even if I do say so myself! I would love your thoughts on my plan on both a crocheter point of view and also any of you who focus more on #zerowaste and reducing plastic because let’s face it I am potentially making some products with plastic in but they are not single use. I have thought long and hard about this but I can’t see any other way as other wise I am throwing away hundreds and hundreds of pounds that I just can’t afford to replace (at Nantwich) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2APok5lD-K/?igshid=12hw8enu2ozjm

So as you might or might not know, I like knitting. I generally love needlecrafting and in the last weeks of being absent I embroidered patches and clothing. As fall is fast approaching and because a friend inspired me to take up knitting again. These are some very basic Hermione's every day socks (free on ravelry!) in burgundy fingerweight. The knitting is a little messy because I unraveled this wool three or four times already because other Projects didn't work. I unterstand why this pattern is popular. It is easy and just knit and purl. I would recommend to size down. The original pattern called for a cast on of 64 but I think a regular medium 60 works fine. It's a very flexible knit and a bit more interesting than "vanilla" socks. I will probably pass them on to my mom as I think she would appreciate them more than I do and they'd fit better. I happen to find them a little loose but maybe my ankles are skinny, but that's purely my own fault.

My first fingerweight sock is done! My needles for this are so tiny, and the holes are so small you cant see through it at all. Im happy with this sock. Sad to be giving it away but ill make it a friend and send them on their way before starting a nice pair for me

Debating on whether I should spend the rest of the day:
A: learning to knit comfy socks with super soft thin yarn (fingerweight vs my usual worsted)
B: trying to gather the materials necessary to summon and defeat the wither in minecraft so I can get its pretty cursed flower drop
