I've been thinking of how creepy uk kids tv shows were back in the 70's. Some of these are crying out for a horror adaptations. An ancient wizard travels through time to fuck up the modern world. A mysterious figure travels the country, creating mockeries of human life from base materials.

The Saint: The Art Collectors (5.18, ITC, 1967)
"I don't understand you, Mr. Templar."
"Why, it isn't that I object to doing the fair thing, it's just that I don't like being forced to do it at gunpoint."
#the saint#the art collectors#1967#itc#leslie charteris#michael pertwee#roy ward baker#roger moore#ann bell#peter bowles#geoffrey bayldon#nadja regin#james maxwell#philo hauser#richard shaw#garfield morgan#bryan kendrick#i actually have seen this one before but for some reason literally the only part i remembered was Simon eating a sandwich during an escape#attempt (it's a nice little character moment in a very playful episode). we're in france with priceless paintings and would be thieves#so this feels very traditional‚ very reminiscent of the black and white series. we've another great cast‚ headed by the lovely Ann Bell#and she's reunited with her 3.17 costar James Maxwell!! they're not on the same side this time tho... JM also having a great deal of fun as#a German pretending to be French pretending to be Geoffrey Bayldon‚ and the look he conjures as Simon rips off his fake beard is really#quite something. and then there's Peter Bowles and Garfield Morgan... these casts are getting very impressive! the plot here isn't the#tightest tbh‚ with a little too much repetitive back and forth with the paintings‚ but it's a lighter‚ fluffier episode and that's always#welcome. it is telling that the conclusion of the episode has Simon supporting the Russian's claim on the da Vinci paintings and helping#to get them returned to their 'rightful home' in a Russian museum; with the original owner dead and with no descendants wouldn't it make#just as much sense to return the paintings to Italy?? idk#oh!! i almost forgot!! Simon uses the stick figure calling card for what im pretty certain is the first time in the series (it's generally#only been used to frame him so far or perhaps once to frame himself to go undercover or something) but yeah he does it for real!

The Saint: The Scorpion (3.4, ITC, 1964)
"This Scorpion character hasn't got his hooks in you, by any chance?"
"Now, Claude, what have I ever done that would lay me open to blackmail?"
"It's too late to give you my list of suggestions."
#the saint#the scorpion#leslie charteris#itc#1964#paul erickson#roy ward baker#roger moore#katherine woodville#nyree dawn porter#dudley sutton#philip latham#ivor dean#leon cortez#geoffrey bayldon#ronald leigh hunt#eve lister#thomas baptiste#hilda barry#this feels much more like the kind of thing The Avengers had begun doing‚ with the old friend coming to Simon's apartment at night in need#of help‚ the friend in government‚ larger than life thematic villain and flamboyant henchman. Sutton had made The Leather Boys earlier in#the year and so surely the production team were riffing on that by casting him as a leather clad motorcycle heavy here. NDP was still a few#years away from the stardom that The Forsyte Saga would bring her but was already a respected theatre actor; pity her‚ then‚ subject to a#(mercifully singular) Saintly spanking. ffs Simon what is your problem. Kat Woodville was shortly to become Mrs Patrick Macnee albeit#briefly; she'd relocated to the US by 68. this is the first s3 episode to feature Teal (peppermints in tow) and his relationship with Simon#does seem to be just a little less adversarial than it was (bordering even on good humoured) tho i doubt it will last..#the Scorpion's use of scorpions does feel a little on the nose (tho may well be faithful to the short story on which this is based for all#i know) but it does lead to a rather wonderful scene of Kat Woodville gamely attempting to convey pure terror at the plastic scorpion glued#to her forearm. she does very well considering (also love that hair on her‚ which is irrelevant but true)
