Worldbuilding rule to live by: If you like something, put it into your world. I wanna ramble about how I've lived by that rule in the current world I use for my DND games. This is also the flagship post of my personal DND tag! It's a long one, enjoy my ramblings!
I've created many homebrew items based off of Guilty Gear. My favorite is my adaptation of Ky's Thunderseal. I also managed a decent adaptation of Sol Badguy as a PC (I think PSI Warrior is a good subclass for him… actually, that gives me an idea. What if Psionics isn't a natural thing, like becoming a gear? Like if you have psionics it counts as a different creature type. That'd be so much more dramatic/impactful than “magic but different”)
Speaking of Ky's Thunderseal, it was wielded by someone important in my world's history: my Jetstream Sam stand-in, because I love MGR:R. I also have his murasama, mechanical arm, and chin guard thing as items discoverable in his tomb. The arm? I was reading Beowulf at the time, so you can use it to rip someone's arm off. It's dope.
Dwarves. I love me a good Dwarven mountain home. Dwarves are a really well developed part of my world, though it's not very unique because I LOVE the classic dwarf archetype. Grudges, ale, and forging, baby!
On that note, Hobgoblins. I love a wandering hobgoblin legion, remnant of a Hobgoblin Empire. This stems from Jort of the Order Undivided by The Bard Ilthari. Unfortunately, for all my love of the bright nosed folk, in my current game I've devolved them to lowly slavers of Goblins, without much hope of increased complexity like Jort gave them, since, well, I feel like I leaned too hard into the cruel slavery thing too fast and it's hard to come back from that. If they lean into the
A lot of my favorite DND things stem from Order Undivided, I also have a Senket analogue npc, and my dwarves are mostly modeled after Kazador. I've been working on an arcane Oath for Julian. I also love Gnolls quite a bit, and learned up on Yeenoghu to possibly use as a villain. Hell, my love of tactical heroic play stems from the paladins being able to defeat much greater numbers by gathering allies and taking tactical positions. I long for the day I play a game where I command armies like the Warmaster himself.
I'm a big fan of Mathew Colville, and NOT a fan of dealing with worldbuilding other Planes, so I stole his concept of the cities of Hell and slapped it on my material plane! Also makes it easier to port the Illrigger class into my world's normal rotation. Ditto for my interest in the Underdark, though I think I'm closer to forgotten realms than he is. I also stole Count Nekodemus of Castle Rend, though only in name. Mine is Baron Orwell Nicodemus, and he's a Tortle (and a little bit of an asshole, in the bureaucratic sense). I think I just like the name :3
I've loved smash bros for a really long time, since I was twelve playing Smash 4. I recently got into it again, both through videos about the history of the competitive scene and by playing Ultimate again after so long. This, of course, led me to the Five Gods of Melee. Suddenly, I had an idea for the pantheon I've been putting off structuring. Five Gods, chosen by competition between all lesser deities called Representatives. (I thought it sounded cool). Each representative also gets two associated damage types, and I'm considering adding some bonus related to them (maybe the cleric can replace their spell's damage type with one of those types instead? Incompatible with channel divinity to avoid tempest cleric shenanigans?). If this turns into a slay the gods campaign, I'm definitely going to lose my mind because none of my players would understand Leffen jokes
One of the only Representatives I've come up with, an idea I've had since the beginning, is basically a god of bloodsport/gladiatorial competitions. I decided to model them off of Technoblade, as a memorial to the Blood God himself.
I love the old traditions of DND. All that dungeon crawly, noodly bullshit. Love it. I make sure to have a lot of dungeons in my world, and am always prepping more my players will probs never see. I've also way expanded my world so that it's much more of a points of light setting, though my players are in the most densely populated area (due to being the only place that existed before geographical expansion) I also need room to improvise new locations. I love my current “canon,” but that just hurts my ability to say “there's a mountain way over there that has a ___, ___ and ___, because… that mountain should've been on our map, no? When you map the whole world, it gets so very small, doesn't it?
Legend of Zelda. My old world had a bit more of it, but I try to incorporate Zelda dungeon design into my dungeons when I can.
When I develop my Underdark better, I want to include a lot of Hollow Knight inspo. The Drow wearing masks, stuff like that.
Really this has just become a ramble about my DND campaign world and I love it
I frequently give creatures multiple creature types. Oozes are also aberrations, many Gnolls are also Fiends, etc. As I just came up with a half hour ago, Psionics characters would get a second creature type, what to call it yet I don't know.
Elves. Hooo boy. I'm not a fan. They live so long, it's too hard to create ancient history with them around. Which is, honestly, the entire appeal of elves. The reincarnation/ embodiment of living history aspect is the only interesting angle I can find personally. Whenever someone wants to play an elf, they never want to lean into the Elrond of it all. They just want to play a taller human, usually with a bow and arrow. So I don't have Elves. Simple as. Of course, they do exist, they're just incredibly rare. They were driven off the mainland for ~reasons~ and hang out on this island made entirely out of trees. Mostly old ass elves and really young ones (born on the island) are still alive, with very few survivors of the between generations. Lead by a Baelnorn, ‘cause they're cool. Drow are the exception, because they're also cool, but they're rare on the surface for different, more obvious reasons. If someone ever tells me they want to play an elf, I'll publicly decline the offer, then catch them alone and give them the lowdown. Half Elves know nothing of their elven heritage, since it's been so watered down by now, though they still get mechanical benefits.

Location, Location, Location - The Undertower of Bailin’s Point
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Reader, and welcome to another “Five-Room Dungeon” style adventure. This time, we’re going to set the fun for a group of 5 3rd level adventurers and tie it directly to our main campaign plot in the Angel of Chaos storyline.
The people of Bailin’s Point have a problem. There’s an old ruined watchtower that used to guard their river port, but it fell long ago during the fall of the Keeps, and now it’s reputed to be haunted. No one’s had an issue with it until recently, when eerie sounds and lights were seen coming from it at midnight. They are afraid some foul evil is afoot. They beg the PCs to look, and try to bribe them by telling them that no one’s set foot in the place except a few local youngsters who dare each other. One of them, however, came out with a golden armband set with rubies, so it’s likely there are other treasures.
The fact is, there is a treasure...quite a good one. Depending on your campaign, this could be a magic-item from table F or even G (rare, but not unheard of). You might make this a Sentinel Shield, Bracers of Archery, Gauntlets of Ogre Power, or even a +2 weapon (preferably one with a cool history attached to it). I recommend deciding on something that will be particularly awesome for one of the players who hasn’t gotten a decent magic item yet. If your party’s fighter is attached to fighting with an uncommon weapon like a trident or a flail, maybe make it that.
The point is, Adziel, our major villain, or one of their lieutenants, has gotten wind of it ans wants to claim it. To this end, they’ve dispatched several corrupted angelic agents to go and get it for their war effort. Such an item could be devastating in the hands of a powerful enemy.
“Room” 1: The Tower -  This is the central, ground floor of the ruined tower. Barakiel, a corrupted angel (use the stats of a bearded devil), and his loyal canine companion Niriven (use the stats of a Hell Hound, but change its immunity and bonus damage to Radiant rather than Fire), are investigating the way into the dungeon below the tower.  Niriven is laying down in the middle of the room but has a passive Perception of 15 and rolls Perception with Advantage. Barakiel has a parchment that says, in Celestial, “The storm will wither hope, but winter will bring joy. Shun corruption at all costs, but flame guides the way. Venom begets only venom, but force can sometimes open a barrier.”
Barakiel will first attempt to dissuade the characters from bothering him, but, if necessary, he will not hesitate to attack them with Niriven at his side. He is utterly convinced of the rightness of Adziel’s cause (although he will not mention Adziel or what he is doing here.) “I have my orders,” he will say sadly, as he attacks. As he dies, he says, “The Angel shall hear of this!”
“Room” 2: The Way Forward - Once they have defeated Barakiel and Niriven (both of whom will vanish in golden light when they are slain, as they return to their home plane), they can examine the room. There are six pillars that once held the roof up (although now they are exposed to the elements). Each one has a rune inscribed on it. An Arcana check (DC 10) will reveal that they are the runes for various elements. They are spaced evenly around the room, with each rune facing a different one. Starting at the north, they are Cold, Poison, Fire, Lightning, Force, and Acid. Each one is detailed below.
The Cold rune radiates Evocation magic. If anyone casts a spell at it that does cold damage or otherwise finds a clever way to bring cold energy to it, it will heal everyone within 30 feet for 2d8 hit points. This only works once per 24 hours.
The Poison rune radiates Conjuration magic. If anyone pours poison on it, casts a spell that does Poison damage on it, or otherwise introduces a poison element to it, it emits a 15′ cone of poison gas that does 2d12 damage (or half on a DC 12 Constitution save).
The Fire rune radiates Abjuration magic. If anyone touches a torch to it, casts a spell that does fire damage, or otherwise introduces fire to it, it will open the first lock to the undertower. The PCs hear a very audible click and can now see there is a round hatch set in the center of the tower floor. If the second lock is already open, then the hatch will unlock completely.
The Lightning rune radiates Necromantic magic. If someone somehow introduces lightning to the rune, or casts a spell that does Lightning damage on it, the Rune makes a +6 ranged attack on them. If it hits, this works identically to a Ray of Enfeeblement, but the effect will fade after 1 hour.
The Force rune radiates Abjuration magic. If anyone casts a spell that does Force damage or if anyone strikes the rune with a weapon for the equivalent of 10 or more damage, the second lock to the undertower is opened. The PCs hear a very audible click and can now see there is a round hatch set in the center of the tower floor. If the first lock is already open, then the hatch will unlock completely.
The Acid rune radiates no magic, and there is no effect for messing around with it. It is a total red herring.
The area immediately below the tower is actually empty. There’s evidence that it was a barracks of some kind. In one direction is the dungeon, and in the other is the vault.
“Room” 3: The Dungeon - The cells have long since rusted to ruin, but their inhabitants, who died starving after the tower fell, have an unlife, and they want to punish the living. Two zombies and an ogre zombie should give the players a decent but not difficult fight.
“Room” 4: The Vault - Here, there are five spirits - the sworn protectors of the treasure. They are bound by their oaths not to give up the treasure unless it is to those worthy of it. This is a skill challenge, where the PCs will need 8 successes before getting 3 failures. If they have a cleric or paladin of a good-aligned god, this counts as two automatic successes. If anyone is of the Noble background and speaks of their lineage or is of the Folk Hero or Soldier background and speaks of their heroic exploits, this counts as two automatic successes. Skills like Persuasion and Performance can be used well here (are are easy DCs of 12). Deception is an automatic failure, as the afterlife lets them see through such paltry tricks, and Intimidation is hard at best with a DC 20. Other skills could be used, depending on the DMs thoughts. If the challenge is failed, the spirits become angered. “You are unworthy, and you shall join us in death!” They attack, using the stats of specters. If the party retreats for more than one hour, any defeated specters return.
“Room” 5: The Treasure - The PCs find the reward, including the magic-item mentioned at the beginning. They also find the tower’s material wealth, including 2,200 cp, 1,300 sp, 100 gp, and 7 gems worth 50 gp each. Appropriate skills might tell them something about the magic-item they found, but common sense might tell them that taking it is going to make them a target for whoever this “Angel” is that was mentioned by their earlier foe. Perhaps this lead will bring them into the overall plot of the Angel of Chaos, at your discretion.
Note: It’s super easy to divorce this adventure from the Angel of Chaos plot. Just have the monsters in the first scene be a bearded devil and a hell hound, perhaps bound by the defenders of the fort. The devil will bargain to try and be freed (someone needs to wipe out the specters below), attacking savagely if the PCs refuse. The scrap of paper with the clue could then be something they find with Perception checks, or the devil might offer it to them if they agree to work with him.

The Tea Times - February 2020
Well, we’re well into the year now. Christmas is a distant memory and all we’ve got to look forward to now are the distant, chocolatey eggs of Easter. Presuming, of course, that we’re still alive by then. It’s gonna be a rough year. We’ve got political upheavals, countries glaring at each other and an extremely infectious virus making the rounds. We’re in for a fun year, folks.
In fact the coronavirus pops up a couple of times in the news section. Was only inevitable, really.
At a Glance
Zombie Army 4, Florence and Lair of the Clockwork God released.
Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time and Baldur’s Gate 3 announced.
Coronavirus delays!
Bioware are overhauling Anthem
Metro Exodus arrives on Steam
ConcernedApe urges everyone to chill out!
Quantic Dreams goes independent
The Releases
Everyone’s favourite slow-mo zombie shooter got its fourth installment this month. Adolf Hitler has now been banished to hell, which is nice, but Zombie Army 4: Dead War proves that the zombies are still dead and kicking. I’ve played a bit of the preceding game, the Zombie Army Trilogy and it seems like it would be good fun with friends. It was released on the 4th February.
Tumblr media
Florence seems like a bit of a funny one. It’s a narrative focused interactive story centered around the life of a girl named Florence Yoeh and the cellist, Krish, who she begins to date. Its dialogue involves puzzles that become progressively easier as Florence gets used to talking to Krish. I love that idea, and how it eschews standard difficulty progression. Looks like a charming game too. Florence released on PC, Mac and Switch on the 12th February (though has been on mobile devices since 2018).
Lair of the Clockwork God may not leap out at most people but it’s by the makers of hilarious ‘Time Gentlemen, Please!’, Size Five Games. Time Gentlemen, Please had a ridiculous sense of humour, which was helped along by the very rough graphics, that just made it a joy to play through. It had Nazi Dinosaurs, after all. Lair of the Clockwork God looks to be fairly similar, albeit with much better graphics. It splits itself in between the classic point’n’click adventure and ‘indie darling’ platformer which are headed up by Ben and Dan respectively. Dan’s Head is larger than his body so it fits at least one of the Indie Darling qualifications. Lair of the Clockwork God was released on the 21st February.
The Announcements
Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time is an unusual continuation of the series, given that it’s a VR escape room. Still, this is a series that has had quite a few odd continuations in its time. This is not an escape room that you take into your home, though. There won’t be any knocking over of coffee tables. It’s a proper dedicated space that you, and a few friends, can visit. There’s time manipulation mechanics too, which seems pretty damn interesting. It’s coming to places across Europe and the US, so might be worth checking out if Escape Rooms are your cup of tea.
Tumblr media
While technically announced in January, I’d be remiss not to bring up Baldur’s Gate 3 at some point. It’s an old classic and laid the groundwork for a lot of modern RPGs. It’s being developed by Larian Games, who made Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel. So there’s some decent chops behind it at least. There aren’t too many concrete details at the moment, but sections of the city of Baldur’s Gate will be available. It’s also based on the 5th Edition of DnD, which I’m sure will annoy people. No release date yet but as we haven’t actually seen any game footage, it’ll be quite some time I imagine.
Viral Delays
There have been quite a few delays thanks to spread of the Coronavirus. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are both being manufactured in China, so they could both see delays to their release date, effectively delaying the next console generation. It’s not for certain at the moment, but given the spread of the disease it would not surprise me. Rather a delayed console than people working when sick, though.
The Outer Worlds is also facing a delay for its switch release, thanks to the virus affecting Virtuos, the team behind the Switch port. The physical will now be a cartridge as well. Still, a decent game delayed is still a decent game.
Tumblr media
The virus has also caused Sony to pull out of PAX East, over very reasonable concerns. My thoughts go out to everyone battling this virus.
Anthem’s Getting Some New Notes
It’s not often that a company admits their issues so much that they retool the entire game. In a blog post, Bioware acknowledge that the players - and they themselves - wanted a lot more from the game than is currently being provided. They’ll be retreating back to the workshop to work on loot droops, long-term progression and the end-game. Apparently, it’s going to be one hell of a rework, as it’s going to be more than an update can realistically provide.
They’ll still be running the current Anthem though, so it shouldn’t disturb any current players. It’ll be interesting to see how people react to the rework, given that there seems to be a lot of effort planned.
No Longer Exiled
One of the first games to become exclusive on the Epic Games’ Store and spark a lot of fury (me included), Metro Exodus, has now slunk its way onto the Steam store after a year of being exclusive. It’ll be interesting to see what this does for Metro Exodus now. Will it see a decent spike in sales or will it go down quietly? Time will tell I guess.
It got respectable reviews either way, so if you were bothered by the choice of game store then you can be bothered no more.
Tumblr media
Keep Calm and Play Stardew
ConcernedApe, the one-man-band behind Stardew Valley, put up a tweet reply saying that he was working on two new games. The first definitely takes place in the Stardew universe, though is not a farming game. The second is a little different. He’s unsure where it sits, world-wise, but will likely have some links back to Stardew. As is expected, the tweet blew up massively, with gaming sites picking it up and running with it. A lot of pressure on a man just trying to make games he likes.
As a response, he’s put out a second tweet telling people to calm down. He doesn’t want to generate loads of hype about it as nothing ruins good games quite like hype. In his own words, he is ‘not setting out to make the next indie smash hit’. He just wants to make games he’s happy with. I think we can all respect that.
Tumblr media
Quantic Dream is Dreaming Alone
The developers of Detroit: Become Human have decided to go alone. They’ve worked with an all star cast, as well as a handful of big publishers, but it seems they want some control themselves. Not that David Cage didn’t have control, mind you. There’s no doubting where his control was. Either way, they are now free to make the games they want. What that will result in will be anyone’s guess.
It does also mean they are in a position to help other developers, though. A good gesture by them, so I hope we can get some interesting indies out of this. Either way, we’ve had twenty-three years of Quantic Dream being shackled to publishers. Good or bad, it’ll be interesting to see what they’ll do with twenty three years unshackled.
That’s all for February, see you in March!

Steam/PC: The Charming Empire Review
Tumblr media
He’s a cutie <3
Final Grade: D+/C- TL;DR: Not great. OST was very mediocre. A little above average visuals. Storytelling was terrible. Voice Acting (VA) was the only saving grace for this game. UI is terrible/no improvement from the mobile version. Characters were great but development was non-existent in many of the routes. Couldn’t stomach the game to play through everyone’s Good ending…I just did Happy Endings which were still just mediocre ends.
Route Order I followed: Yoshimine, Togawa, Tanba, Sera, Soshi.
Route Order I recommend: Yoshimine, Tanba, Sera, Togawa, Soshi Though it honestly doesn’t matter since none of the storylines are that closely related anyways….I’d say Soshi for the beginning or end since his has the most “answers” in it. His route is pretty painful to save for last though….
Here are the route reviews: Ratings for the routes in this game will be actually higher than expected. I'm not saying these are "good" routes but the overall game is pretty kusoge (shit-game) so I'm rating them based on the low standards the overall game has set already. That being said, if you're use to fully fleshed out otome games, which I'm spoiled with...since I tend to play console based ones and not mobile based games, this game is pretty garbage. However, if you just want some light fluffy writing with tolerable visuals and a simple UI, this game is perfect. I originally played this game cause Tsuda Kenjiro VAs onii-chan... but holy shit after the first route I wasn't sure if I could make it through all the routes.
Luckily all the routes are pretty short....thank god. I didn't bother with the Normal ends cause the lackluster CGs with the shitty auto mode really made me want to kill myself while playing. Without further ado.. Here are the individual route reviews. Each written after completing the Good end.
Yoshimine 6/10
Angry Tsundere Shota >_> Uhhh def not my type. So I chose this to be my first route cause I saw the character pictures and this looked like no.1 not my type I tend to play the routes I don't think I'll like first then end with the best. He's an okay tsun-shota type. He def has some cute moments but it was really hard to get into his character since the kusoge didnt really give him good character development His idle sprite also looks really awkward too so that didn't help. Overall his VA really made up for the shitty character writing he had and semi brought his character to life. Oh yeah... the plot "twist" at the end...was so obvious.... holy shit.
Tumblr media
Wtf is this idle..... something looks off....
Togawa 7/10
Okay... from what I see so far... this game is mainly a setup for the Soshi route at the end... I'm kinda okay with this. This route was sweet due to the bachelor being such a sweet cinnamon roll. Luckily his sprite wasn't as awkward to look at. His CGs were pretty weak as well. I think there was like 1 good CG. Augghh this kusoge with the shitty character development. I'm glad this character had some "history" with the MC though that made the lack of character development better. There were some interesting translation differences IDK were meant to be in there like switching black tea to just Earl Grey tea.
Tanba 8/10
So I really like Tanba Toki's design and the fact that his VA is also Prompto from FFXV's VA is even better. The VA suits him really well and his character development is on point. There was some questionable OST choices for certain scenes... there was "happy" music when you were helping the rebels... like whhaatt? THEN THE MAIN THING THAT MADE ME UPSET. NO CG FOR THE CONFESSION PART HOLY SHIT IM SO PISSED. THIS GAME IS KUSOGE WTH D: Then after the confession scene theres an awkward Kiss CG which look sssoooo weirrdd >_>
Overall though, this is my favorite route so far. He had the best writing so far. I think the fact that the MC doesn't get to be with him all the time really helps. There was def. slight character development written in for both the MC and Tanba. The trend of setting up for Soshi is still very prominent in this route...anddd still no connection to any other characters expect for Soshi. I really hope Soshi's route is good to make up for all the rest of these mediocre to shitty routes. (Spoiler…it didn’t) Sera's route next.
Sera 7/10
Alright, I'd be lying if I was going to say that I didn't enjoy this route. ITS STILL A TERRIBLE FUCKING ROUTE. Writing is very mediocre and storyline/development is downright garbage. BUT I fucking love Sera's character trope. Stoic quiet big guy who's actually a fucking cinnamon roll inside. He also holds the knight card as in he must protecc. Seriously, if he had glasses he would be perfect for me. HOWEVER, the VAing in the beginning was a little forced. I think Takuya (the VA) was trying to force himself to have a deeper voice at times and it didn't sound good. Then there was the sprite of Sera... wtf is this hand shit going on his idle sprite?!??
Tumblr media
Besides that shitty idle hand...I love his character design. A LOT of the scenes (including the ending) were not satisfying at all....they could've done so much more with his scenes. The sewing scene pissed me off the most....WTF IS THAT "he said thanks" end scene. The best part of this route is that Kagamitsu Togawa actually exists in this and Yoshimine Kei is hinted at...finaaaalllly other characters being shown. I'm also glad of Soshi's end in this route compared to others. Lots of good but lots of bad in this route.... Soshi for last bois.
Soshi 6/10
I'm. so. sad. I was super hyped for this last route cause there Soshi was the only route that was hinted at in ALL the other routes. This route was a whole lot of disappointment though :( In fact... Togawa was kinda the only saving grace of this route. Arrgggh I tried so hard to like this route I really did but the story telling was soooo bad. I mean after playing the other routes you kinda are just waiting for the "twist" that was shown before...so the precursor to it is literally like WHY?! WHY YOU GOTTA BE LIKE THAT SOSHI KUN?!Also there was some fucking weird ass development or something messed up in the translation.... WHERE THE FUCK DID THE TEA PART COME FROM!? DID I MISS SOMETHING!?!?!AS IN (Spoiler alert)
WHY THE FUCK DID SHE TRY TO KILL HIM?! I'm sorry this is the only major spoiler I had to mention cause I was so confused when it happened. Then the writing got even weirder when the "Happy end" scene played where she literally started to call him "Onii-chan" and she's been calling him Soshi the whole time.... even Soji at some point IDK why....top of that...why the fuck was Soshi allowed to do what he was allowed to do at the end like no you were still the ruler howwww?....This route was just full of weird plot holes and shit that just didn't make sense. Since the route was very shitty to begin with the CGs were equally lackluster. Boring scenes got boring CGs except for the last CG but by then I was just so sad and done with the game. Tsuda Kenjiro's VAing talents were wasted on this kusoge and kuso-chara.
The Pros:
Artstyle/Character Designs- I really enjoyed a lot of the Character Designs. In fact it was the VAing and Character designs that made me eventually pick up this game. The art is vibrant is really nice to look at. Sadly some of the CGs weren’t the best of quality and some sprites could be improved. However, overall the art is very pleasant and well suited for the time period it is set in.
OST- OST was decent too. For a mobile game that ported to PC. I was decently surprised that even after trudging through so many routes the OST didn’t get annoying or repetitive. Granted there were some questionable timing on when to play certain tracks but the songs themselves were still pretty good.
VAing- So many good voice actors involved in this game. Tsuda Kenjiro is literally my favorite VA and they had the voice of Prompto too? Man good shit. The VAing did not disappoint. They def. made the game 100x better. If this game didn’t have VAing I would’ve been so sad and I don’t think I could’ve played through it all.
The Cons:
UI/UI Functionality- My BIGGEST GRIPE about this game. I get it shitty story/development, budget art, etc. BUT WHEN YOU CANT EVEN GET YOUR UI TO FUNCTION/LOOK GOOD?! COME ON! The UI is directly a port from the mobile game so it looks clunky and jenky. Not only that Auto doesn’t work as auto normally does in otoges. It acts more of a skip button which was SO FRUSTRATING. I sometimes multitask when I play otome games like check my phone/send messages to people, so I love having it on auto especially with VAing. Additionally I don’t know if it was only a bug on my game but my settings would NEVER save when I would start a new route… holy that pissed me off.
Development of Characters- Do I even have to touch on this? There was little to no development of the bachelors at all… Most of their characters were just thrown together and you were to just nod your head at some of their “developments” as in they would say “I’m partially a cat” and your character would go “Oh cool”. End of story sequence. I wanted to just punch the screen sometimes…
Tasteless CGS- Artstyle==cool. CGs==terrible. The CGs were at really weird timing and sometimes I wished there was a certain CG at a certain time but there wasn’t. I don’t know if its because there wasn’t enough memory to put in CGs for the mobile release or what not, but regardless the game did not have CGs at good times. Leading the CGs to be at awkward moments, except for the “core” CGS aka the “meeting” CGs and the “ending” CGs.
Main Character- She’s weak willed and not a fun character to follow. She just takes things as is, except maybe in Tanba’s route. I hated “being” her… I wanted to make choices at times when the games doesn’t give you a choice.
Bottom Line:
This game is just pretty garbage. I just want to move on my life and pretend that Tsuda Kenjiro wasn’t VAing in this game. If you’re thinking of buying this game..buy it on sale…like 50% or more sale or some shit. The routes are short and not fun to play through. There are def. better choices of otome games out there for PC. Of course not a lot of them are voiced by cool Japanese voice actors but this one is pretty shitty you might as well pass. I would highly recommend Nightshade on Steam or if you’re looking for something more comedy-esque and risqué… Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome. For good artstyle I’ve heard good things about OZ-Mafia too. Or just save your money up for a PSTV for those sweet sweet PSVITA games. ;)

What the hey, AJ? | First Assault [Volume: January 2019]
YES, THE TITLE IS COMPLICATED.
Hi - if you’re reading this, you know the drill. My name’s MetaVanAJ, insert quirky catchphrase and/or ‘your mum’ joke here. Welcome to the first volume of ‘What the hey is AJ play...ing?’ Yeah, the title isn't the greatest but hey it rhymes...mostly. I just thought I’d use this as quick way of communicating what I’m playing (or going to play) at the moment, & hopefully give some quick recommendations, to pique your interests in some really good stuff. As much as I would love to do a video version of this, I feel I would lose the spontaneity behind the idea; once I get my shit together I’ll do one of these in video form, someday. The only reason I’m writing this now is because January 2019 is so jammed packed with excellent NEW titles (despite most of this article being about ports & remakes), that I literally won’t be able to keep up. And I can’t even keep up in an off-season so this is just exponentially worse. So, ‘what the hey is AJ playing’ in January 2019?
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
Tumblr media
(Platform(s): Switch | Release Date: Jan 18th)
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes is taking another core title hostage so please buy this game. Joke aside, I am still looking forward to this title. Like everyone else, I’m a bit iffy and uncertain about how the gameplay is shaping up but I’ll be picking this up day one. Why? For one reason only, of course: Suda51. You see Goicha Suda is a brand - he is a different, ‘special snowflake’ and he makes different ‘special snowflake’ games. His name has been slapped on various works the past decade, and then some, but he actually hasn’t directed a game since 2007’s No More Heroes, on the Nintendo Wii. Travis Strikes Again marks his return to the directorial seat, albeit an odd-way to do so. But hey, this means pure unadulterated Suda-vision, the same vision that gave us Killer7 and No More Heroes; meaning narrative-wise we’re up for, what the kids call, some wacky shit. That and being able to blast through this with a bud, in co-op, will ease any of the pain, if the gameplay isn’t to mechanically engaging. Pain divided...is worse - why would you subject your friend to that?
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition
Tumblr media
(Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC | Release Date: Jan 11th)
I saw someone call the ‘Tale of’ series the McDonalds of JRPGS - I don’t think that’s an accurate metaphor but hey it’s an interesting way to open up a paragraph, no? Tales games tend to be a bit ‘same-y’ but it’s a bloody excellent formula and the fact they’ve released so many of these over the years just goes to show the formula works. Don’t like the characters, story & setting of one Tales game? Play the next one - gameplay remains the same, fundamentally. I won’t dive into the gameplay deep here but let's just say the ‘action’ is pretty decent in this ‘action-RPG’. Personally, you can’t go wrong with any Tales after Tales of the Abyss (Symphonia didn’t click with me, my bad). Apparently, Vesperia is one of the best in the series, so if it’s half as good as Abyss, and what I’ve seen of Xillia, then this is definitely worth a buy - especially on Switch, so you can take this bad boy on the go. Don’t worry, high-frame lovers: it was 60fps on the 360 in 2008, it’ll a good time, trust me. And this is one also has a dog with an eye patch in it...and a pirate midget. The definitive edition also adds all the extra goodies from the japan exclusive PS3 port, which is all the more reason to pick up a copy now. LIKE RIGHT NOW.
New Super Mario Brothers U Deluxe
Tumblr media
(Platform: Switch | Out now!)
Eh, I’m not super excited about this game in particular but moreso the idea of the game itself. Shocking fact: New Super Mario Bros. games have been decent this entire time. The games have no spunk, in terms of story and presentation, but boy is the level design tight & fun. If you’re looking for a good 2D platformer on Switch, get Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, or hey even Shantae ½ Genie Hero. The other big 4-player party-style offerings however, have been kinda meagre offerings. Super Mario Party looks boring and soulless, Kirby: Star Allies is patronisingly easy to a point of being ‘unfun’ (and that’s for a Kirby game), and I forgot how to casually play Smash without crushing people’s dreams. Super Mario Bros. U is a great platformer and even greater with a few buddies but I’m not clamouring to get it at full price. I still strongly recommend it though if you’re just looking for some 4-player platform ‘em up fun. Comes with Luigi U too, that’s nice - surprised they didn’t charge us for it, all over again. That’d be almost as bad as charging a full 80 Australian dollars for it...oh wait.
Resident Evil 2 [2019 remake]
Tumblr media
(Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC | Release Date: 25th Jan)
Legitimately thought, I don’t need to sell you this one. You saw the trailer, you’re probably already hyped that Resi is ‘returning to its roots’; whatever that means. Personally, I haven’t touched Resident Evil up until recently, as I am a big baby when it comes to jump-scares. I know their coming but I still go through the physical shock of getting scared by set jumps. The titles I have been delving into (and loving) of late, have been Resi 4, 5 & 6...all at once - and I wonder why I can’t tame the backlog? Anywho, that’s why I am excited for the Resi 2 remake. Why should YOU be excited? The Resi 2 remake takes from all the best components of the series, and smooshs them together to create something extraordinarily beautiful -  the actual horror elements and sense of claustrophobia through environmental design from the first three classic games, the tight gameplay formula from the modern Resi formula (4, 5, 6) and the beautiful new engine from Resi 7. Resident Evil 2 (2019_ is like a best hits album of everything the series has achieved so far. Play it, yeah - you owe it to yourself.
Kingdom Hearts freaking III
Tumblr media
(Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One | Release Date: 29th Jan)
At this point, you are either on the Kingdom Hearts hype train, or you live in beautiful bliss of the Kingdom Hearts hype train. I got in an abusive relationship where whenever I thought about Kingdom Hearts 3, I would angrily playthrough the entirety of Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix again. I’m better now - I spend my days now complaining about Dream Drop Distance like a good boy now. That being said: I’m a fan like everyone, I’m getting this Day 1, and I payed an extra 20 Australian dollars, on top of full price, for the deluxe edition. If you’re wondering why you should buy Kingdom Hearts 3, all I’m going to say is it’s going to be epic. It’ll have a rippling behemoth impact on anyone who’s touched a game from the Eastern shores, like Final Fantasy XV did, at its release. If you’re a newcomer, obviously start with Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, as they are the finest action-RPGs I’ve ever played, in my short time on this earth. But if you’re even remotely invested in the series, you’re already drooling - that fabled release of KH3 is so close I can practically taste it. It tastes so good. I SWEAR TO GOD THOUGH IF I SEE ‘FLOATY COMBAT’, I DON’T KNOW WHAT I’ll DO. I’ll see you at the end of it all...
Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal
Tumblr media
(Platform(s): PS4, PC | Release Date: 18th Jan)
Woah, that last one got a little emotional there. Anyways, this one’s an easy sell: BOOBS, BUTTS, ANIME BABES, & BODACIOUS BLADES. Senran Kagura Estival Versus was a interesting musou that showcased some promising gameplay elements; I actually had to activate more than two brain cells at once, during my playthrough. Shocking, I know. Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is a remake of a 3DS game (Senran Kagura Burst), which consists of gameplay more akin to a 3D-Beat-’em-up. It simply looks like a bit of a meatier Estival Versus so I’m keen to check it out & see how deep the game mechanics well is. If you’re looking for a fun light action romp too, you should as well. The presentation, which I won’t delve into here, is often what is a bit of a turn off for newcomers - I personally have never been swayed by it either way it. Sure, it’s a bit saucy but it doesn’t detract from the fact that whatever the Senran Kagura series tries its hand at, is often a pretty fun & polished experience, albeit a slightly shallow one. This one isn’t necessarily a ‘must get’ but they’re not charging full price so it is definitely worth an investigative playthrough, if you can get past the ‘fan-service-y’ presentation.
Well, that’s it for the first volume of ‘What the hey, AJ?’ Next time, I hope to adapt this into video form & hopefully spin in a few funnies, as well as just tighten up the structure. Next time, probably won’t be all new releases either - I’ll probably end up doing another just if I find that everything I’m playing, at any given time, is amazing. I have, and always will be, MetaVanAJ - stay cool, fools. Actually, that was mean calling my audience fools. Stay cool, individuals.

Your thoughts on the Nintendo Switch?
Great Stuff:Super Mario Odyssey: Looks absolutely phenomenal! The 3D Mario game I was hoping the Wii U would one day get, but alas, it was shifted to the Switch. Looks wonderful, will probably play wonderfully. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Might be the best Zelda ever made. It look absolutely phenomenal in every way imaginable. The biggest surprise was the voice acting, which was actually well done, and the game gave me Ni No Kuni vibes in its art and sound design. Will definitely one of the best things Nintendo has done in years and one of the best games of 2017, no doubt.Redout: A nice F-Zero-like futuristic racer. If Nintendo is going to pretend F-Zero doesn’t exist, then someone else might as well give us a similar game. It’s also a really good game, considering it’s already out on PC and has great reviews.Xenoblade Chronicles 2: I don’t really care for the Xenoblade series, but this will definitely hit all the buttons for JRPG fans, and Xenoblade has a pretty expansive open-ish world, AFAIK, so it’s bound to be great. It also has good art design, and thank God for that, because the Xenoblade Chronicles X was butt-ugly. The Technology: It’s really cool technology; a home console that turns into a handheld was the natural evolution of the Wii U, and I rather like the direction Nintendo went here. As a console, it’s underpowered, but as a handheld, it’s pretty phenomenal. The Joy Con controllers won’t be the revolution Nintendo promises, but they’ll do some neat things. The Price Point: $299 is a fair price for it. I was expecting at least $349, so this will reduce the entry barrier for the machine.Middle Ground:Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Cool that it’s being ported to a system that is basically handheld. But, it’s ultimately just a just a Mario Kart 8 port with some Splatoon stuff thrown in. Nothing too impressive.Splatoon 2: Looks fun and will be fun, because the first Splatoon was, but honestly? The game didn’t show anything that qualified as sequel material. All I saw was basically stuff that Splatoon could have had as an expansion. The biggest difference is the ability to tumble/dash, so…
ARMS: Looks fun, but I don’t know how they plan to turn this into a full game. Not much to it. It’s more of the type of arcady title I’d expect as a pack in with the console, like Nintendo Land, not a full retail release.Fire Emblem Warriors: No offence, but even with the growing popularity of Fire Emblem after Awakening and Fates, good luck with this one taking off. Hyrule Warriors was a great game and idea, but Nintendo has lost its mind if it thinks Fire Emble has the same selling power. No Region Locking: There is no reason to have region locking at this point. Glad Nintendo is catching up.The Bad:Super Mario Odyssey: Doesn’t release until Holiday 2017. That’s bad. This game should have made the launch window. That leaves only three “major” release in 2017 for the console (so far): Zelda at launch, Splatoon 2 in the summer, and Mario in the winter. That’s not very impressive, but I guess they still have E3 to show off other stuff. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Also on the Wii U, so not an exclusive. If you are one of the four people in the world who own a Wii U, this makes the $299 price tag steep when you can just get BotW on a console you already own. The Switch doesn’t seem to be offering anything for BotW over the Wii U except portability, because the Switch seems to be rather underpowered when undocked.Redout: Technically on STEAM already. The Battery Life: 2.5 to 6.5 hours is a really big gap, and I’m guessing this means that less intricate games like probably ARMS will get decent battery life, but the real meat of their library, like BotW and Mario Odyssey will probably be closer to the 2.5 hour battery lifespand. That’s pretty awful, especially since Nintendo cut the GPU’s power in half when the system is out of the docking station for the expressed purpose of getting a decent battery life, and honestly that’s a huge hit for games to take for 2.5 hours of battery. The REALLY Bad:Third Party Support: Abysmal. Most of it was either stuff that Nintendo has had on lockdown for a while now, like a Xenoblade game, or the leftovers big name developers didn’t want. It was severely lacking, and, literally, like…half the developers/publishers showed up like a kid who forgot their homework. SEGA was literally like: “Hi, this console looks cool! We might put stuff on it at some point! ANYWAY, SEE YOU LATER!” The most “impressive” 3rd party game was Skyrim, which is a bad HD remake of a buggy game that was made ten thousand times better by the modding community (no mention of mods on the Switch that I can see). You could basically play Skyrim on a toaster a this point. Nintendo is basically getting the scraps from Microsoft’s and Sony’s 3rd table at this point, and either they don’t care (they should) or still have no idea how to build proper 3rd party relationships (they should). Overall: 7/10. The Nintendo stuff looks good, but the only really impressive exclusive is Mario Odyssey, which won’t see release until the end of the year, and the third party support is yet again abysmal for a Nintendo console. Let’s see what they show in the upcoming weeks before launch.

God Eater 3 [30+ Hours Grind Review]
9 years ago, the first existence of God Eater (GE) was released and it’s the most beta PSP game ever, it was second to best in its the era in 480p resolutions. Some might say “this is a monster hunter copy” and they’re not wrong. The gameplay, mechanics, and effects are quite similar but a year after, GE Burst was released and everything about the game is fully enhanced.
The game become popular as more weapons become more accessible and the updates for bullet creation allowing players to create a magical effective bullet. (We create rasengan bullet back then).
Then, GE2 come into existent with the most flashy gameplay but with the most shitty story ever made. So here we are with the first release of GE3.
PRESENTATION
It’s a game that created for PS4 however, Bandai Namco with GE project team manage to port the game on PC exquisitely well. The world is very beautiful with more details and flashy moves from anything that is able to move. Adding up, they actually put a lot of efforts into the map as each map have a rotation of Day, Night, and Rain mode.
However, one thing that I really miss for GE2 is the hit marker effects indicator (showing the effective area to get critical hit for the monsters) that is removed from GE3. the monsters are definitely looking badass and cool compared to a certain game where it’s basically killing off unexistent dinosaurs as it has no supernatural powers to overwhelm its prey, it throws off the new vibe and excitement when your brain telling “Hit that boi hard until it’s broken”.
A very captivating view of the post-apocalypse world.
CHARACTER CREATION
Definitely, the game contains fewer choices compared to the previous titles, but 10/10 on the character’s voice. One of the thing that always overlook, the characters’ voice have several stages and effects to be triggered and definitely make up for the cons for the character creation menu.
But, my convictions are too strong and the available outfits are the most disappointing part of the game. Not much variety, decent designs and I do hope they gonna have more outfits in the upcoming DLC.
GAMEPLAY
At first, it felt very sloppy when I play the first 5 missions as I believed that they had adjusted the attack speed on every weapon and the shield deployment speed (it felt very slow, to be honest).
Once you get used to it, it’s fine. Movements, you can create a huge variety of combos for your weapon depending on the type of equipment you’re using and it has various abilities that can be chained with the extremely flashy move. Remember the OG move which is swapping to gun form? Yeah, still the same over the course of 9 years.
The types of equipment, they are very hard to craft and upgrade each one of them to rank 7 and +30. If I were to say, almost 80% of the time you had to go out for the mission and get the item that had a 10% chance of getting it. (Lord praise the RNG rate).
There are a lot of other interesting abilities that will make the player appreciate these little things to make the game feel more enjoyable and worth playing over the long run.
Do keep in mind that EVERY SINGLE MISSION HAVE WEAPONS TO BE UNLOCKED.
This is, in fact, one thing that I notice, AI joins your team after the queue time is over. It’s a great thought to the multiplayer mode due to the fact that not everyone willing to farm this boss. Basically saying that you won’t play this alone if the Ai be with you as camouflaged real player. Hats off.
It’s possible to one-shot those raid boss Aragami too.
CONTENT [ NO MAJOR SPOILER ]
The main story revolved around a certain loli that exist from god knows what science technology they used to create an Aragami in humanoid form. (I personally want engineered catgirls but we had that in GE2).
The main story genres are “family-hood” and “deeply cared for each other with strictly no homo” as each character has their own unique identity that theoretically that each character should have their own story arc that gonna deeply impact the main story content such in previous titles. But it’s too good to be true as the character’s story builds up to the 3rd floor and the story quite disappointing.
If I were to put in comparison on the quality of the story throughout the series, definitely GE > GE3 > GE2. GE2 story is absolute garbage and should be put as a benchmark to any author that wants to write a satisfying storyline.
Things like this happen a lot.
My Personal Enjoyment
I have waited for this game ever since my disappointment in GE2 which leaves a huge void in my heart. After waiting for so long since 2014 and getting a sequel that can be finished with less than 25 hours is quite disappointing. Looking on the bright side, the gameplay, the optimization of the game on PC and aesthetic of the polished 3D model manage to cover some of it.
Personally, I love this game and every single aspect of this and the character voices are one of the things I fall in love with. Thus, I do hope the DLC will be even far better but my expectation wouldn’t exceed that high.
Disclaimer: Your personal enjoyment may vary depending on your game preference.

Charity
During the course of one of my many facebook battles (I don’t necessarily see a futility in them if the person hasn’t unfriended me yet), I was berated for defending the rights of transgender citizens to use the bathroom of their chosen gender, not the one they were assigned at birth. Keep in mind I have not yet come out to my friends. One such friend angrily asked me, “The fuck do you care about them? It doesn’t personally affect you, does it?”
And although in fact it did affect me personally, because this is very much a fight on my character and my profession, that question struck me as very odd. Do people really think that we cannot or should not give a damn about something or someone if we ourselves aren’t expecting to get something out of it? Doesn’t that fly in the face of the charity work nonpartisan, religious and nonreligious volunteers do for other people?
Instead of choosing to come out right then and there and make the argument more personal (and therefore a little more subjective), I chose to grill them right back on what charity really is. You’re giving your time, your money, or something of your own to help improve the life of another human being, with ZERO expectation in return. Even if there’s no thanks. Some might say that they are charitable because it makes them feel like a better person, that they might not be as bad as the world tells them they are. Some might say that they are expected to be charitable because of a religious belief or some holiday or some leader told them to be charitable.
I’m quite aware that even writing a blog post about what being charitable is could very well be subjected to a possibility that it was just to get attention, to have praise and thanks lavished upon oneself. My father probably saw it that way, as part of his being a sociopath drove him to seek the shield of others’ adoration and admiration to hide behind. Ironically, he hated it when I donated money at the grocery checkout lines, or outside Walmart with the red kettles, and he certainly didn’t approve of gofundme’s.
Thankfully, he’s out of my life and not breathing down my neck on every decision I make. But back to the topic, which is where I really don’t giving money away to charity. I’m single, probably will be for a very long time as I transition, and have only one family member left, my poor mother. I have a decent job I enjoy that doesn’t pay a lot, but I live with her and we make things work, and we’re amazingly well off considering the political climate. I am ever conscious of how unlucky many of my gaming friends are, or how less well off they are, and I can finally start doing something about it.
I once donated a bit of money to a gofundme effort before there were gofundme’s, sort of a volunteer freelance project. See nearly three decades ago, when pc gaming was in its infancy, LucasArts released several games that revolutionized adventure stories, one of them being Escape from Monkey Island. The other, which my father chose for me instead, was LOOM. It was a musical-focused game that had the player-character cast spells through musical notes recited in a particular pattern. Some patterns were reversable by singing backwards. The game had a lot of depth and alternate means to solve the puzzles. And it was slated to be a trilogy. Only at the culmination of the first game, we got a hell of a cliffhanger... and LucasArts never delivered, only hinting briefly at what the titles of the 2nd and 3rd games would be. In the following years, and decades, the best we got were ports and special editions of the first LOOM game, some even going as far as providing voiced dialogue for ALL of the game’s speech. If that wasn’t commitment, I’m not sure what was; and yet the series just never continued.
Then a driven and story-loving nerd who, like many of us middle-aged gamers who grew up with LOOM, decided to continue the series himself by not only writing the story for the next two games, but also to hire programmers, testers, artists, musicians and coders to create a purely fan-based, fan-funded pair of sequels. Only, as you could imagine, following in the footsteps of a very iconically and archaic game art style required people with very niche skills, and all of those people needed to make a living. Paying for all of it became very difficult and very scarce. I think the project was a few years in development, barely halfway to even the first playable alpha demo, back when I stumbled upon it after searching for a sequel. I was young and idealistic, but no less idealistic than I am now, and shrugged. These guys might never get off the ground, even with a significant donation. But, Hell, I grew up with this too and want to see the story resolved. So I gave them their biggest donation in years (which appears to have inspired others to top it, as months later bigger cash flowed in) and thought nothing of the offers to put my name in the game as an easter egg, or to have a character named after me or whatever. Maybe in the credits, okay, but that’s not why I donated money.
I donated money because I want them to succeed. I want hardworking talented artists and caring people to stay employed so they can continue being hardworking talented artists and caring people. My friends used to tell me I sounded like an asshole when I told them I had money I was willing to throw around for the good of my friends. I was so confused then, and maybe I can understand the danger or the appearance of wanting to be a savior or somesuch. But I have very little in my life to throw money at, and I figure it’s far better than a WoW Token or a new car or a 4K TV or something I don’t need. Better to make the world better one choice at a time, because God knows there’s a shitload of stuff fighting to make the world worse many choices at a time.
I paid $2,000 for the custom-fitted, glow-in-the-dark Mass Effect N7 fury cosplay latex costume back in 2013. The tailor, Andrey (better known as Andromeda Latex now), was not very well known back then for his revolutionary catsuit patterns, latex designs and layering, as well as the reactive coating that made it glow under black light. After helping to fund what I saw as a very worthy artist being underappreciated, he got a few more ideas from progressively happy customers, and hit the jackpot making Evangelion plugsuits and Overwatch costumes. He has more work than he knows what to do with, and his waitlist is more than a year long. When he moved locations, he had a rare opportunity to make only specific costumes for a short time. I paid 2K for another one, just as much to own another rare and high-quality cosplay as to support an awesome human being who I thought deserved to stay in business.
So, um, yeah. I’m not rich. I make barely $35K a year being a newspaper editor and designer, but I rather like it. And living at home with an open-minded but damaged mother means I’m well capable of living within my means. Looking after me isn’t a big deal, isn’t a big upkeep. So when I offer an artist payment with no concern about the price tag, or help pay for someone’s bus ticket out of their shitty hometown, or help fill a few shelves at the pantry... I’m not doing it for God, I’m not doing it for the golden plaque, I’m not even doing it to escape from the shadow of my father’s upbringing. I can very much get by. I’m no high-roller, but... this world, with all the shit that happens to good people... I’m sorry Facebook ‘friends’, but I very much have a stake in this fight. I don’t know why you don’t feel the same way, with all the religious drivel you preach to me every day.
I hope the money goes to good use, and that it helps bring about happiness and goodness in this entropic world we inhabit. Would that money could solve all of our problems =\
It’s like Bill and Ted often said, “Be excellent to each other.”
