Cw: slight racism,homophobia and use of a slur, some antisemitism and memtions of past death in the family.
Grace’s first gala as the future Mrs. MacMillan in New York is met with curious stares and stifled gasps.
“She tried to have Mr. Riley's poor niece deported, so she could steal her husband. What a tramp!” She overhears a society woman tell Clive’s mother and dough faced sisters.
“Mrs. de Souza says she isn’t to be trusted with proper ladies like Miss. MacMillan nor with your good and honest Clive.”
“Miss Burgess is a witch from hell, Mr. Riley told my husband that we are not to invite her to any events he will be attending. He cannot stand her.”
It was then that Grace had had enough and sought refuge in the empty library.
Or at least it had seemed empty when she closed the doors behind her.
“You must've thought you’d seen the last of us.” Israel de Souza smirked as he and the Jew appeared drinking wine on the large emerald green couch.
“I did.” The blonde admits wondering what sort of thing he has up his sleeve.
“Uncle wants you killed, as does Churchill and the Crown, but Eva wants you to live.” The queer man says as he pretends this is was just innocent small talk.
He was harmless, not a soldier, not a criminal.
That faggot wouldn’t hurt her.
The Jew, however, was a legend amongst the agents of the Crown.
She had been one of their best before she handed her resignation and started working independently.
Florence, that was the name she had used at the wedding, was skilled enough to make her death look like an accident.
“Why to feed off my misery?” she asks with a scoff.
“No, believe it or not, Eva is not as pro-murder as the rest of us.” Israel explained as he poured her some whiskey. “Had you touched anyone else, they would’ve killed you with their bare hands after hunting you for sport, but Eva says her killing days are in the past and thinks you’re not a real threat like your former superior.”
“There is a gangster in Boston, Irish mobster named Jack Nelson. He works for the Americans from time to time, and he needs a high society wife of Irish blood now that his good friend, Mr. Roosevelt, has his eye on the White House. If you were to marry him, the Crown wouldn’t be able to touch you.” Florence speaks, still as friendly and charming as she had when they met, but this time Grace knows better.
She placed her trust on the wrong people and now she was here thanking a Jew for her mercy.
Her father would be turning in his grave, he had raised her to dislike those who weren't like them and now she owed her life to two mexicans and jewish woman.
“Funny, isn’t it? You are now to marry the Thomas Shelby of America if you don’t want the government you served to kill you.” Israel smirked.
"You wanted Eva’s husband and now you have Eva’s life." Florence chuckled. "Exiled. Hated by her own people. Marrying a gangster you've never met.

Three weeks later, Grace Helen Burgess Curran marries John Patrick ‘Jack’ Nelson in a lavish affair worthy of a queen.

“I haven’t had a vision in almost two months.” She whispers when she just can’t fall asleep at night. Tommy can’t sleep either, he’s tried when Eva’s insomnia acts up and Eva can’t sleep when he’s up at night.
“Has that happened before?” he asks pulling her close, letting her snuggle up against him like cat.
“After Gabriel---” she tries to say the words, but the knot in her throat won’t let them pass.
“We’ll go to the midwife tomorrow if you’re worried about Charlie.” He’s afraid too, its there she can feel it in the air.
They’d named their baby boy, they’d bought all the things for him, she feels him alive inside her, it can’t be that. She’d die if their baby died inside of her.
Eva shook her head. She knows it’s not that.
“No, I need to consult a witch.”

Spoiled. That's how Eleanor felt walking through the Garrison lane. So many years living in luxury taught her to despise the humble and the street that was once normal to her, now looked ugly and dirty, unworthy of her.
Inside the pub, Tommy waited for her, cigarette burning on his lips and eyes often wandering to the bottles of whiskey on the shelf. He didn't have a plan or a script to follow, their reunion was scheduled based solely on instinct.
He believed taking Eleanor from Jack's guard would be good for business.
“I left the children alone,” she greeted, “so this has to be quick, what do you have for me?”
“Jack isn't home?” Tommy questioned, observing as he was, he noticed the sorrow underneath her confident tone every time he mentioned her marriage.
“No, honestly, sometimes I wish he'd be more like you as a father,” she spat out, softening her answer with condolences, “I heard your daughter is sick, I'm sorry for that,”
Tommy's jaw clenched, no one outside the family had dared to mention Ruby yet. Family was his anchor and many wouldn't dare cut the rope to it. He sighed, not accepting to be taken off control.
“What do you drink?”
“What are you having?”
“Water,”
“Then water it is,” she weakly smiled, her brummie accent wasn't as strong as his.
He poured her a glass and they sat down together. At first silent, like generals inspecting the enemy's territory before going to battle.
“So?” she asked.
“Before we start, tell me this, why did you accept my invitation?”
“Honesty? I thought I'd be your messenger pigeon,” she admitted.
“Matter of fact?” he arched his eyebrows, “You accepted to come back to Small Heath, to a pub you don't know, to be alone with a man, because you thought I had a message for Mr. Nelson?”
“Thomas,” she scoffed, “I don't know what you're implying but if you're trying to play one of Jane it won't work,”
“Oh, no wish for payback, then?” he nodded, “Good, forgiving women are good,”
“Hm, I wouldn't use that word,”
“You love Mr. Nelson, don't you?”
“We've been married for twenty four years, love doesn't matter anymore,” she mumbled, then counterattacked, “do you love Elizabeth?”
He looked down. Did he? Tommy guessed so. She's been there since forever, he couldn't imagine life without her, but did he love her like a husband should a wife? He didn't know.
“I do,”
“Good,” she licked her lips with malice, “do you love Elizabeth like you loved Grace Burgess?”
Tommy froze, he was never approached about Grace's death, to the point he wasn't ready to be, it was still an open wound, just covered by a bunch of bandages, but nonetheless open.
Luckily, Eleanor carried on, “Y’know, people like the Burgess used to hire Jack's services when he still worked for the italians, they don't like getting their hands dirty, they're agents, inspectors, cavalry, politicians like the Mosleys and like you must've noticed, people like the Mosleys, the Burgess and the Mitfords, don't like people like Jack, like Elizabeth or like me and you,”
“...what's your point, Mrs. Nelson?”
“Call me Eleanor,”
“Hm?”
“There's no point,” she sighed, sipping on her water, “Elizabeth used to go to my sewing shop, she was younger than me and some customers always ripped her clothes, I never charged her to sew it back,”
“Do you want her to write you a thank you letter?” he mocked, hating when people brought up his wife's past.
“No, I just want you to realize people like you are the only ones able to antagonize with Mosley,” she explained, “Jack doesn't see it,”
Tommy gulped, if this business was a chess board, he had no idea of where to place Eleanor. Lately, he wasn't even sure if he was the king, the horse or a simple pawn.
“Now, do you really have nothing for me?” she stared and scoffed at his lack of answer, “Well, take care of yourself, you're thinner since the last time we met,”
With confident slow steps, she left the pub. Tommy was alone again.

This pairing won't leave me alone, so here have this.

“You know my grandparents were from Ireland.” Jack Nelson is charming, dangerous and so much like the man who let a coin chose for him that it brings a sweet pain to her heart.
“I heard, Mr. Nelson, must be why we have so much in common.” Grace Burgess smiled and flirted back.
She needed a wealthy husband who could keep her living like she was used to. Am ultimatum set by her uncle after he discovered she had fallen for someone like Thomas Shelby.
Jack Nelson was a star on the rise, much wealthier and better connected than Clive MacMillan and there was just something about the man before her that drew her in.
Like a moth to a flame.
A stupid moth who’d been burned once before and wanted to burn herself again, the Irish woman mused.
“I would like to invite you to dinner sometime, my niece, Gina, will come to make sure we behave ourselves if that is alright with you, Miss. Burgess.” Jack is forward, and while Grace still nursed a broken heart, she found herself saying yes to him.
One dinner turns to a night at the opera a week later and three months after, Grace is married in a wedding big enough to be covered by magazines from both America and the United Kingdom.
She loves him and he loves her the way she is. No need to pretend to be someone else, no need to butt heads with his family and best of all, no filthy slums to live in.
Grace Helen Burgess marries a man who loves the real her and doesn’t mind her capricious nature.
Tommy becomes a fond memory and the reason she is the fabulous Mrs. Nelson who is a particular friend to the President of the United States of America and far more popular than the President’s wife.
Yes, she had thrived and become the woman she could never be with Tommy Shelby.
Its 1934 when she sees him again.
He is married. He is happy and in love with his wife.
It doesn’t hurt her like it did when she saw his wedding announced in the Birmingham Daily so many years ago.
It’s there as they sit with no resentment or lingering feelings that Grace Helen Nelson has an epiphany.
That stupid coin toss changed their lives for the better.

“Joseph, sweetheart, don’t stare.” Eva told her eldest son, sixteen years old.
Sixteen years ago she had married Jack Nelson.
And for sixteen years she’d been nothing but loyal.
Poor Mrs. Nelson, a woman kept in a house that looked like a palace.
Having child after child and surviving each birth by a hair.
She hated him.
Her love for him had died long ago.
He had sworn he changed, and like a fucking fool she had believed him.
Teddy was six months old when she discovered the truth.
The telephone number had swirled in her mind while she was under the anesthesia.
The telephone number and visions of her husband and a woman who wore his ring on his finger. Two children, the eldest about the same age her Annie would’ve been and the youngest three months younger than Teddy.
Hello, is this Mrs. Nelson?
The Irish woman hadn’t known about anything. To her Jack had saved her from her gangster husband in England. A man who believed her to be his Angel watching him from heaven.
She had been Grace Shelby, before that she had been Grace MacMillan and before that Grace Burgess.
Now she was Helen Nelson.
Lived in New York City, in a four bedroom house with a maid and did the bookkeeping for Jack’s gang.
To her he was John Nelson who had no children and no wife. She had discovered the truth when Eva and Jack had been photographed with President Roosevelt.
To Eva he’d be her last kill.
As much as it pained her, she’d have to share it with Grace.
It wasn’t like she hadn’t been sharing things with the blonde.
I won't beat around the bush, Helen, you know why I am calling you.
Eva sees cameras flashing when Grace comes in with her children.
Eva smirks when Grace’s husband sees his late wife pretending not to know him.
“Mr. Shelby,” Eva’s voice was sweet, like poison in jars of honey. “Allow me to introduce to you the other wife my husband kept.”
He is speechless, all fury.
"You look like you've seen a ghost, sir." She stokes that fire.
“Ten fucking years, Grace.” Venom dripped from his tongue. “You left me; you left your son. And for what, to be another man’s whore?”
Oh, but what a sweet venom it was.
Perhaps now that Shelby was divorced and she still young and beautiful they could ruin Grace’s life.
Perhaps for the first time in her life, Eva wouldn’t be forced to share.
