I’m satisfied with knowing that Grace McCallum just kicked MyKayla Skinner off a guaranteed Olympic gold medal

There is a very good reason for McCallum over Skinner on the team. It is: She’s usable on three events in TF, even if it’s not the first choice. And while her scores at Championships were lower than expected, she was coming back from injury and is showing the exact level of improvement we expect to see from someone peaking. Someone with a usable vault score for TF who is ranked 5-5-4 across events is a better choice for a competition where we don’t want to have to strip an athlete of credentials in case something goes wrong than the athlete who brings in another tenth in terms of total score, but is ranked 9-7-7 across the other events.
It is not: Taking the top four shows more integrity

434. 10 Things from the 1996 Women’s Gymnastics Trials (June 30, 1996)
(Entire program -- the introduction with John Tesh is INSANE. Amy Chow came alone! Maybe at the end of the night she’ll have six sisters! Kerri Strug: always the bridesmaid, never the bride! )
Tumblr media
10. “There may be room for one from Colorado.” Spoiler alert, there was no room for either.  Theresa Kulikowski (short hair) and Kristy Powell (ponytail) did poorly on night one at the trials, and their coach, Tom Forester acted like a total baby while the cameras were on him:
Tumblr media
At 34:20 there is a fluff piece on him, because for some reason from 1996-2000 NBC practically focused more on the coaches than the gymnasts.  It was gross.
Isn’t he in charge of USA Gymnastics now?
Theresa fell on a simple (well, for a gymnast of her caliber) move on the balance beam. She became an alternate, but clearly the fall on beam haunted her from the looks of this article:
"The whole meet, through the team compulsories and optionals, I was pulling for everybody," said Kulikowski, reached Tuesday while vacationing in Wisconsin. "But when they got on the medal stand, I started to break down crying. I could have been there if I wouldn't have fallen."
Almost a month ago to the day, Kulikowski rolled off the balance beam during her compulsory at the U.S. Olympic trials in Boston and with it, her Olympic chances.
Kulikowski received a devastating 8.962, the lowest compulsory beam score among the 14 competitors. During the optionals she would earn a 9.787, a score bettered only by Dominique Dawes, Kerri Strug and Amanda Borden. But by then it was too late. When the totals were added, Kulikowski was eighth overall, only 0.671 points from a roster spot. She was named the team's non-traveling alternate, but didn't accompany the team to training camp.
"I would have been on the team," Kulikowski said. "But I fell off something that I hadn't fallen off more than once or twice in training. I don't know what happened."

9. Shannon Miller & Dominique Moceanu petitioned on the team due to injuries and watched from the nosebleed section. Reminiscent of Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Nationals. of Shannon still wore her trademark white scrunchie.
Due to this, there were only five spots open that night. It was a lock at the end of only one rotation:
Tumblr media
John Tesh said that Jaycie “screamed” through this competition.
Tumblr media
8. Future Olympians Kristen Maloney (2000) and Mohini Bhardwaj (2004) were in attendance.
Tumblr media
7. Amy Chow: after a beautiful uneven bars routine, Amy had a horrific accident on the beam where she hit her face near her eye on the beam. She got back up and finished like nothing happened! The audience loved it. Her floor routine music is very pickin’ and grinnin’ though. Her little hoedown dance!
Tumblr media
When she found out she made the team, she had ice near her eye.
Tumblr media
6. Kerri Strug’s parents, Burt & Melanie. They are adorable. I love them.
Tumblr media
Here they are in Atlanta.
Tumblr media
5. Mary Beth Arnold’s beam mount. -- with a potential stress fracture.
Tumblr media
4. This really upsetting fluff piece about women who just missed the team in the past. (@ 44:14)
Dianne Dunham is mentioned, she wasn’t chosen for the 1984 team after becoming injured before trials, and failing to be petitioned on because she didn’t participate at the 1983 Worlds due to an injury. She passed away recently, and it was so upsetting.
Kim Kelly to me, still seems so bitter about not being on the 1992 team. I mean in 2012, 20 years later she was still discussing it with the media. She tore into the 2008 olympians who were at the 2012 trials:
When she was told that Nastia Liukin, Alicia Sacramone and Bridget Sloan — members of the 2008 Olympic team who have not trained regularly since then — were coming back and hoping to make the team for the London Games, she said, "That's such a shame.
"Get over it. Let those younger ones who have worked so hard have their time. It's never-ending, and so annoying. After all I went through, you'd think it would change. It's so different now because you can do just one event. To me that's ridiculous. You used to have to do all four. That makes a gymnast to me. It's been like that since they got rid of compulsories, which is another thing because anybody can do their own optional routine or a specialty, but to be able to do eight routines is much harder."
nop, don’t like her.
Tumblr media
3. I learned that Amanda Borden nearly made the 1992 team. Same haircut back then, too.
Tumblr media
2. Katie Teft doing illusion turns while Tim Daggett has nothing to say, so John Tesh talks about how she has to take calcium supplements.
Tumblr media
1. The camera focusing on Jennie Thompson crying.  not cool

also this is yet another idiocy of forster, WHY TF WOULD FIG SAY SMTH ABOUT HOW YOU DO YOUR INTERNAL SELECTION?
Tom: Saying that FIG was unresponsive in trying to figure out what Jade needed to do... e.g., did she even need to be here at Trials? Let Brian Carey decide what was best for Jade and her health.#GymTrials21

Selection committee reports for the Olympic teams are out!
Document Link (https://usagym.org/PDFs/Pressbox/Selection%20Procedures/w_21olympic_selectionreport.pdf)
The women’s report team selection makes absolute sense and a lot more than what was told to the media immediately after the event. If that logic had been given from beginning, I won’t say there wouldn’t have been controversy (what's an Olympic team selection without controversy), but people would have had a lot fewer problems with it. McCallum was chosen over Skinner because of her ability to contribute in multiple places in team finals and because of her Worlds experience in 2018/2019. Wong isn't mentioned, even though she's on the third highest scoring team and also could contribute in two places. My speculation is that it is probably a difference of experience and consistency. Carey was on the second highest scoring team, and so that team was not considered.
The explanation of Skinner for the +1 is also given in terms of medal potential, not 5th highest all arounder as is more logical and most people suspected. McCusker is not mentioned at all, and the reasoning for Skinner over McCusker, the only two remaining athletes with medal potential, isn't given. There is also no explanation of why they only selected four alternates.

If Yul can stay in second, he'll get an automatic berth. He has .85 over Wiskus, with Yul going to HB and Shane to pommel.

This coming weekend (Thursday-Sunday) are Olympic Trials for US gymnastics; GymTrials21 is the tag to block if you're not interested. Podium training will probably start Tuesday? Per usual, I won't know where I'll do my screaming until I'm doing it
