Recently read: Once again stuck in an airport, so clearly it's time to do a reading recap and waste some time before boarding.

My poor Libby app is probably like, "Can this woman check out audiobooks about something other than dead bodies, please?" And to that, I say NO! Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach was a bit dated, but still had some interesting stories and information. I don't know how much of the information I actually retained since I listened to it before going to bed, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. (★★★)

I was intending to do some liveblogging about Chalice of the Gods but I had to, like, renovate my kitchen and shit so reading got put on the back burner for a bit. Anyway, I liked Chalice better than The Sun and The Star, probably because the Percy narration feels so familiar and RR has got the tone on lock. But there was just something about this book that was... unsettling? Lacking? compared to the original series. There was charm, but it didn't feel right.

Beyond all of the issues I've complained about before (lack of continuity, keeping everyone stagnant, compressing the timeline), I think my main issue with how RR writes now is that he's so fucking self-aware and referential of everything. Instead of writing something timeless, he's focusing on references and language that date his books within a year of release. The original books had their references, yes, but it was significantly limited compared to his most recent output and leaning so heavily on them just... flattens everything out, I think. Also, go figure he's gonna milk this plot for another two books. God. (★★★.5)

The Courtesan Duchess by Joanna Shupe featured some messy bitches being dramatic and stupid everywhere, and I loved it. If you're not a fan of your historical romance heroes being an absolute slut and kinda shitty, this book is not for you. But I had fun with it! (★★★.75)

The second book in the series, The Harlot Countess, also prominently featured Mess as a main plot device (with a series called Wicked Depictions, how could it not?) but the hero was less of a jerk in this one. Shupe's books are hot and fun. I'm looking forward to exploring more of the back catalogue. (★★★)

Ughh I don’t like Harriet giving Hal a cut of her money... at least she talked him down and maybe he will find Jack? I doubt it though. We’ll see...

It’s so interesting to see Lucy Wells play against someone like Kate. Or when she had a scene with Amelia last season. She still strikes me as like the “sweet naive” girl. But then when she comes face to face with those other characters she seems as tough as Mags and Charlotte. It’s always so jarring- but in a really good way.

Ok the best delivery of the episode just went to Lydia and Blayne:

Lydia: We should keep our enemies close. Blayne: We should keep our enemies dead.

I love Lucy in menswear and this surprises absolutely no one... oh God she’s bringing up the Spartans. Damn woman.

Whoa! Did Lucy just steal that horse or was it hers? Because being a horse thief is not a good thing if you are already going to debtors prison. Didn’t they hang horse thieves? You gotta respect it though- she’s a real Wells woman.

Omg Lucy saying she needs to see Charlotte 😭. Give me more of Fanny and Lucy my HEART.

Oh wow- the sex worker that should have been Prince Rasselas has been in love with Fredo this whole time! Aww. I think I got that feeling in another scene with him as well. For a show that moves as break neck fast as this one, they certainly hire actors who can deliver the emotional weight of a story in like 3 seconds 👏 👏. You’ve done well, lad, even if I don’t know your character’s name and you’re not Rasselas.

Oh Lydia saying Kate reached the “pinnacle” of their profession. She’s so proud of her. Lol I’m sure something sinister is about to happen but I feel happy for them for a minute.

Omg Emily so wants to believe that Hal is “a good man” but I noticed that he did not respond when Emily said “oh, then you are trying to dupe the Lord?” He lies by omission a lot- like when he made Emily believe that Isaac killed Charlotte.

Lydia and Nancy! I’ve been waiting for this. And... it’s fucking heartbreaking. A little worried that Nance told Lydia she has killed but that threat felt good. Also so happy we know more about Nancy’s childhood in the workhouse 💔 

I knew Harriet did the right thing by making Knox feel guilty! I really hope they get Jack back next episode, but I like that they seem to be continuing this story into next season - because it definitely needs more time to do it justice- just like the Spartan thing spanned two seasons.

I don’t care what anyone else says, this scene between Nance and Isabella is GOLD. “Are you completely cracked?” “Not in the least.” The timing is hilarious.

My new sexuality is Lady Isabella Fitzwilliam saying “I hope it fucks him. Right up the ass.”😂

Mad respect for Kate “I’m the rescuer” Quigley. Bring that bastard down.

YES NANCY! Ah!!! She hit him right in the face! Lady Isabella kissed Nancy everyone!!! Kate’s acting here is beautiful. I love that the kiss happened and Nance’s reaction was completely in character. Ughh. I need to write an entire post breaking that moment down now.

That’s right, stand up for yourself Fredo. Now go find Not-Prince Rasselas and be happy! Also loved Elizabeth’s line delivery about having the utmost respect for people like her son and Croft.

Ughhh... things were just going so great and now Lydia had to see Croft and Fredo. What the hell. No.

Oh man.... Emily and Hal just got WAY too Nancy and Bill Sykes for my liking...

Oh Lydia... fuck this. Wouldn’t it be amazing Lydia, Kate, Lucy, Nance and Isabella all banded together to bring him down? Not that they would all magically become friends, but just that they would realize the necessity of taking out that evil. Lydia doesn’t need Blayne now that Kate’s got the Prince’s ear. Bring the mother fucker down together.

Hopes for the last episode:

Jack Lively will be rescued but Harriet and North will continue their mission to save others.

Emily will get away from Hal. 

Nancy will have an emotional scene with Lady Isabella where we will find out even more about her past. Lady Isabella will talk about how Charlotte helped her to be emotionally brave and will help Nancy to do the same. Nancy will end the season COMPLETELY SAFE, ALIVE, AND NOT ACCUSED OF MURDER.

Blayne will be brought down or severely weakened by Kate and the dream team (Lydia, Nance, Isabella, Lucy.)

We see a glimpse of Prince Rasselas at the Molly House in the last montage (since it is finally safe for him to return.)

We all find out that there indeed will be a Season 4 and Violet and Amelia will be back for it.

Hey, it probably won’t happen, but a girl can dream.

Harlots 3x3 hypocrisy

One of Lady Isabella’s best lines in season 2 is about how she could never understand men for paying for intimacy from a harlot and then treating it as if it is real, and yet, Lady Isabella is now paying Charlotte, despite the fact that she wants to hold her hand, and be tender with her outside of the bedroom.

I hate this. I always knew Isabella was a hypocrite, but I never thought she’d become Charlotte’s cull.

I always get really sad when Charlotte is still in the beginning eating that strawberry before the show comes on... 

Get it Fanny. She’s trying to hurry him along and who can blame her?

Cherry thinks the cricket bat is supposed to be used for something else ha! I would like Cherry to get into the discipline trade too.

Kate talking about ambition, I think we’ve found our zillionth Slytherin on this show- represent! You tell him Kate. 

Get OUT of there Emily. See I don’t know if we are supposed to believe Hal’s remorse or not. I think he was expressing guilt so that Emily would think he was still a good guy who made a horrible mistake- but then once she blamed it on Isaac, he actually felt remorse about his brother’s death because he loves him. 

Oh wow... I didn’t expect Lydia to lay into Kate like that. I guess even though she loves her, she’s still toxic. Obviously she thinks that she is doing it for her own good but... that was hard to watch. Poor Kate.

Blaine being a despicable human being as per usual.

Nancy is right Emily!!! oh no! Emily let it slip. Oh no... Nance is going to feel even worse. Oh that “Oh God,” that Nancy lets out. Poor Nancy. Of course she would go there and suddenly be like “He loved her and I killed him.” I know Harlots fans are not going to like that but it’s exactly where Nance would go because of her guilt... (side note Nancy is the only character who has ever felt remorse about killing an Alfie Allen character which makes me stan her even more. Me at myself: Separation of actors and characters? What's that?)

Harriet and Will trying to get Lord Leadson (is that his name?) arrested. Good. I’m glad that Jack Lively is still in England at this point. Hit him where it hurts Harriet- making Knox feel guilty is a good idea. I’m glad that at least this horrible turn of events is going to spur Will and Harriet to pursue justice and speak out about people being captured and sold into slavery. This will probably go into Season 4 (yeah I believe there will be a Season 4)

Cherry loved old Sugar Pig she really did... Her and Emily need to leave these worthless men and be with each other. (Nothing against Charlie- he is a product of his environment.)

Harriet Lennox for president. No seriously, can Harriet be our president?

Kate Fleetwood is such an amazing actor.

Omg Lady Isabella Fitwilliam just casually kidnapped her nephew. She just walked right out of the house with him. She is so delightfully unpredictable. Charlotte would have loved that. Lady Quimfingers, Lady Baby Snatcher, I am IN LOVE. 😍 😍
