Sasuke has been shown to prioritise other people's life over his own (vs haku, vs gaara, shielding ONLY naru with susanoo arm when vs juubito even tho his own life was at stake), showing his selfless side, but it is always interpreted as THE OPPOSITE?! "don't touch, he/she is mine!!! sasuke is so possessive over xxx" by -you know who- fans. Sasuke was ready to die for their favourites and that's all they could muster from those scene.

Those people are dumb, that’s why.

They don’t understand Sasuke because they don’t care about understanding him and they associate him to some dark and brooding trope like shojo protective boyfriend or whatever they like. They self-insert with the other side of the ship (be it N*ruto, Itachi, kishi’s canon pairing or everything else) so they like the cool dark guy to be possessive over them.

They’re confused by kishi’s pro-Konoha propaganda and N*ruto wanking, that pushes Sasuke into a villain-ish position on more than one occasion, although even from that they shouldn’t misunderstand him, and if hey do it’s because they’re too dumb. If they were able to think they would see how EACH AND EVERY OF SASUKE’S GOALS WERE NOT RELATED TO HIMSELF, from avenging his family and clan against Itachi to avenging Itachi against Konoha, from protecting the village that Itachi had defended, to creating a new shinobi world and the longlasting peace Itachi had dreamed of, so that no one else would go through what his clan, and most of it all Itachi (never himself, even tho he suffered more than anyone else) had gone through. 

This alone shows how selfless and self-effacing he is. Since the massacre he never considered himself his own person, he just saw himself as an avenger, a tool to carry on the revenge for his parents, and mind you, revenge means justice, like Kirin, the jutsu he invented to bring judgement from the sky, from heaven, to Itachi who destroyed their family. He never made vicious, evil, selfish thoughts about killing Itachi, or even others.

Before the massacre he was a sweet loving child who just wanted to get strong enough to work beside his dad and brother in the police, the only ones he wanted to be acknowledged from. He never made anything about himself, he just wanted to be part of the group of people he most admired. 

Even the way “fans” see him, as crazed and power hungry is OOC and wrong, because Sasuke values strenght and power, of course, but he does it for a purpose, because he wants, he needs to get stronger in order to carry on his goals, and of course he admires the strongest ones and he ignores the others, since he wants to learn from them, or challenge them, like in N*ruto’s case, towards which he would feel a complex a superiority at first, and of inferiority as the story progresses, since N*ruto gets stronger faster than him despite his hard work.  Sasuke isn’t power hungry, he’s actually humble enough to know his own limits and ask for help when he can’t do things alone, like asking N*ruto what S*kura told him about getting up the tree with chakra, or forming Team Taka for his revenge, or asking Tobi/Obito, Orochimaru, then the past Kage about the history of Konoha (ignoring Tobirama’s harsh words against him).

Sasuke’s story is tragic, the pain of loss permeated his whole being, to the point of never being happy for real because he lost too much. As painful as loneliness and being ignored can be N*ruto’s pain is different to the pain of someone who had a family he loved and a brother he loved and admired more than anyone, only to have it taken away from him in such a bloody, dark way, with lies and violence and manipulation marking his soul. The memories of those happy moments stayed in his mind, and every time they came up they were tainted by the blood of his parents, by death everywhere, by Itachi’s cruel words. So much that he devoted his life to them, forgetting himself completely. 

But fans see him as selfish, they like to make jokes on bratty arrogant/emo whiny Sasuke, while they define as selfless those who controlled or tried to control him, pushing their ideals, needs and desires on him. I won’t even mention his canon wife because that’s a marketing move to have a new generation and her manipulation/pushy attemps never made it otherwise. Oh wait I mentioned her. Anyway, I was mostly referring to N*ruto who canonly said the most possessive and “unhealthy” things about Sasuke and to Sasuke (and mind you I am interested in dark Nar*sasu), and who’s by far the most possessive character. 

I am also referring to Itachi (whose reasons I already commented and “defended” every time, but who undoubtedly who controlled Sasuke’s whole life) who controlled Sasuke’s life to an extreme point, manipulating him so that he’d take the path he chose for him, and “entrusting” him to N*ruto in the end. As selfless as Itachi was, as much as his actions were dictated by his love for Sasuke, Sasuke is just as selfless, if not more selfless than him, because he never tried and force Itachi to do as he said and wanted, like during their Edo Tensei encounter, when Sasuke desperately wanted Itachi’s attention and time, but he also respected Itachi’s decision, no matter how painful it was for him.

Even more so, the times Sasuke didn’t do what Itachi had expected was when he didn’t kill N*ruto, which is a selfless act, since it would have granted him mangekyou. Other selfless actions were not killing those Orochimaru wanted him to, freeing all his prisoners without expecting anything, and freeing Team Taka without forcing them to help him back. 

And then there are the moments you mentioned, that are so important to understand him. He saved N*ruto’s life from Haku, and he protected him with Susanoo’s arm, and he shielded him from Gaara and while Haku would have killed him, he wouldn’t have died from being shoved against a tree by Gaara, and yet he did it anyway, even though he was badly hurt and he got more injuries by cushioning N*ruto’s fall. He’s so selfless and caring for those he values important, that he just doesn’t care about himself, he just wants to prevent them from suffering. Even though it means not carrying on his revenge, the purpose of his whole life. That moment he thought that if he didn’t survive that fight it meant that it wasn’t his destiny to avenge his family because he wasn’t strong enough, I don’t remember the exact words but I remember I was moved because that’s someone who doesn’t see himself as valuable or important at all. That’s someone who only sees himself as a tool.

People don’t understand him because he doesn’t blatantly go around saving people and making big-ass statements like your average manga protagonist, in fact he downplays his actions so much that they don’t notice them at all. 

Actually not only I find those ppl you mentioned dumb, I also find most pro-Sasuke fans kinda dumb as well because the way they defend him is superficial and shows a poor understanding of a character that is so complex and amazing that they just don’t seem to grasp.

Impression now

Gai is amazing.  Hilarious.  I have mad respect for him.  He may have started off as a joke character but he is actually amazing, as a person, as a teacher, as a character, and I love him.

Favorite moment

After the Chuunin Prelims, the scene where Gai is talking to Lee about the probability of Lee surviving the procedure, and promises that if Lee dies, then Gai will die too.  It’s the first moment you see Gai being serious, and you learn the true measure of his devotion.  Gai might be loud and obnoxious and sunset genjutsus, but he’s also love and warmth and he would do anything for someone he cared about.  This was the first time we saw Gai—and Lee—as people and not gags.  And it was touching and sad and it really made me care about both of them.

Idea for a story

Fuck if I know.  Let met think…I hate to do this, but since Ume is known as the Queen of Angst I’m going to say I was inspired.  When Kakashi is in the midst of his ANBU depression and Gai petitions to be able to join, instead of saying ‘no,’ Sandaime says ‘yes.’  Now we’ve got ANBU Gai, being forced into completing these brutal missions or being charged with insubordination of the highest degree (the punishment of which, is death).  Not wanting to see Gai punished, Kakashi does the dirty work while Gai basically panics.  Seeing how much further into his shell this is pushing Kakashi, Gai bites the bullet and starts pulling his own weight.  The two spiral deeper into ANBU and the darkness that follows them, desperately grasping onto each other.  Gai finally begs Kakashi to leave one day, but Kakashi cannot, even seeing how affected Gai is.  So Gai sticks by his side, slowly killing off all the brightest parts of himself.  Until one day, Gai see’s a young boy with thick eyebrows trying his damnedest to be a ninja without chakra, and begs Sandaime to let him be the boy’s sensei.  Hiruzen finally smartens up, and ejects both Gai and Kakashi from ANBU.  They get their students, and they learn how to heal with their new purpose (Gai is better off at first, but he drags Kakashi behind him).  And then everything eventually works out because I was making myself sad.  As a payoff to having Gai in ANBU, let’s pretend that Kakashi and Gai were such a great team, they ended up finding Obito, they caught him, brought him to the village for rehabilitation.  No Uchiha Massacre, Madara is dead already and now has no one to bring him back to life, Zetsu walked into a patch of experimental weed killer and died (yes, all the Zetsu, it was a huge patch and they just kept walking into it for no reason. maybe there were some parasitic ants that took over their brains or something convenient like that), and everyone lives, everyone’s happy, hugs and kisses for everyone.  Boom.  Horrible ending.

Unpopular opinion

I honestly think Gai would be the greatest boyfriend.  As in: The. Greatest. Ever.  He would win awards for being an amazing boyfriend, and an amazing husband, and an amazing father.  Why?  Because he would give you his everything.  And not in a ‘Oh, I want to take advantage of the man,’ kind of way, but in the sense that, once Gai has decided you’re the one for him (even if you’re just the one for him right now) he is going to put soooo much effort into making sure you’d be happy.  He’d be bringing you little gifts every day, just because they reminded him of you.  They would probably all be different, things that he saw while doing his crazy training throughout the village, but they would all have some sort of deep personal meaning and you would probably love them.  Ok, there might be some trial and error in the beginning, but the man learns fast and never gives up.  If you didn’t like receiving physical gifts, he would gift you every day with something non-physical.  Maybe you like horrible poetry?  Gai will write you daily poems.  Maybe you like massages?  Gai will give you daily back massages, foot massages, wrist massages, full body massages (and i do mean full body massages) etc.  Maybe you just want someone to sit quietly with and cuddle for like an hour—Gai will stfu and cuddle with you.  Sure, he’ll be bursting with thoughts after, and he might get a little fidgety, but he will 100% do it, if it makes you happy.  So you better fucking treat him good or I’ll cut you.  Okay, Kakashi will cut you but still.  Don’t do that to Gai.  If you’re an introvert and you feel sometimes that his personality gets to be a little much, he will try to tone it down or give you space, but he’ll be back to 11 in a heartbeat if you change your mind.  He would remember every single important date.  If you wanted to go somewhere or do something, Gai would make it happen.  Whether that’s going skydiving off the mountains in Lightening, or looking for a mythical fish off the coast of Water, or going to the Land of Hotsprings for some R&R, or just going to the corner store to pick up your favourite take-out and that movie you were talking about.  Did you run out of sugar while baking?  Gai will bring you sooo much sugar in like two seconds flat.  Is he out of the village?  Doesn’t matter.  His summons are at your service (even if they’re a bit slower).  He would back you up no matter what (and even if you broke up, Gai would still have your back.  Gai is Ride or Die ok, he will be there for you as long as you’re not horrible and cheat on him or something.  Don’t be mean to Gai; he’s precious). If you’re having problems in your relationship, Gai will do his best to work them out with you.  Gai will go to therapy and work his ass off to make both of you happy. Gai obviously has his quirks and his own issues, and wheelchair bound Gai will probably take some time to bounce back into his normal vigour.  But honestly, out of his generation, he’d probably be the best boyfriend.  People don’t want to date Gai because LOUD and EYEBROWS and THAT HORRIBLE OUTFIT but a) he can be quiet if you need him to be, b) the eyebrows aren’t that bad get over it, and c) you bet your ass Gai looks amazing naked in civvies.  Don’t ask Gai to change for you (honestly, if you caught his attention, then I probably don’t have to tell you that) because that’s just mean.  But Gai will treat you right.  Date Gai.  You won’t find a better boyfriend.  And if you’re lucky and he proposes, marry Gai.  You might want to elope, though.  He will go a little overboard with the ceremony otherwise.  But hey, you’re dating Gai, you probably like overboard.  So go for the ceremony.  It will be the greatest wedding anyone has every attended.

Favorite relationship

If you’ve been on my blog for more than five minutes you know I love Kakashi.  But that is not my favourite relationship of Gai’s.  I love Gai’s relationship with his students, but specifically with Tenten.  Now I know what you’re thinking; sibi, why choose Tenten when there is Lee, Gai’s protege.  Well, it’s simple.  It’s easy to get along with someone who is like you.  Lee has always been a mini-Gai, and so it was not hard for them to bond.  Both have a relationship based on common interests and common goals, and it is a beautiful relationship.  Gai and Neji’s relationship falls in a similar vein; hard working student, eager to improve himself through hard work.  The problem here is that Gai isn’t much of a mentor—not by any fault of his own, but by virtue of Neji focusing on the Gentle Fist Style.  There were certainly exercises to build endurance and stamina and team bonds that Gai taught Neji, but Neji had a path already, and it was easy to guide him on it.  I love Gai’s relationship with Tenten because he had none of that.  All Gai had in common with Tenten was that they both work hard.  She had no real direction, she had no clan to teach her a specific style or put her on a path she could follow.  He could not identify with her as a girl, he didn’t really know how to treat her (because while Gai is a ball of sunshine he is awkward in his own way) but despite this, he didn’t give up.  He wanted to help her fulfil her goals.  Tenten’s dream was to be like Tsunade?  Gai was going to make that happen.  He tried to set her up with a medical ninja, since that’s what Tsunade was most famous for.  uh oh, Tenten didn’t have the chakra control.  Gai was not deterred.  Tsunade was known for her super strength…but that also required chakra control that Tenten didn’t have.  Gai was not deterred.  He tried to give her his summoning contract, but Tenten ended up insulting the tortoise and ruining that chance, as well as a chance for any animal summon (as the tortoises would surely gossip about the disrespect).  Gai was not deterred.  He taught her how to summon weapons.  He just kept trying.  Gai tried his best to equip Tenten with the skills she would need to fulfil her dream.  She did not end up proficient in the same way that Tsunade was.  But she found her own star.  She found something she loved, developed a fighting style all on her own, and became the greatest at what she did.  And Gai, who didn’t have the talents to teach her to be like Tsunade, didn’t go ‘oh well, I can’t help her,’ he said, ‘if this doesn’t work, then we’ll try that, and if that doesn’t work, we’ll try…’ until Tenten found herself.  He was an amazing mentor to all of his students, but this is most evident, in my opinion, with Tenten.

Favorite headcanon

I don’t remember where it started, but I like the idea that Gai is actually a genjutsu type, and whenever you see the sunset behind him, it’s actually him casting a low level genjutsu for theatrics.

At every point in their relationship, brand new all the way to old and married, kakashi and gai have had someone suddenly declare "omg you two are together! You have to be!"

They first is rin, two days into the acadamy. It was weird then, they didnt really understand what she was trying to say and kakashi thought she was just being weird. Now, he wishes he could hug her for seeing what he didnt.

The next is when they're older. They're still not officially dating, but they're much closer than they used to be, espeshally since Rin's death. Its one of their other classmates, a guy who died just a week after making his declaration in the middle of a meal with all the chunin (plus kakashi). He realizes it because of the way kakashi lingers near gai. Kakashi doesnt linger near anyone, ever. Espeshally since obito and Rin's deaths. Kakashi thinks its then when he realized what rin had been saying early, and he cant help but like the idea a little.

The third time, Minato goes quiet because gai has just interrupted a private moment with kakashi, and proclaimed that kakashi had to accept his latest challenge cuz he turned down the last three. It's when kakashi sighe in defeat and starts to get up that he says it. Kakashi goes still. They've been dating for two weeks, and he doesnt understand why it's a surprise? Gai just blinks and asks him why he wouldnt tell his sensei. That should have been the first person he told. Kakashi just waves his boyfriends protests away and tells his sensei that he figures the people who matter, will figure it out themselves. (Which is true. He knows they'll figure it out, he just doesnt know when.)

The fourth time, they hear it separately.

Then it's Sarutobi, the third hokage. Kakashi is stunned at the almost silent observation, thankful that for once gai isnt actually there to hear it. He goes best red and sputters a little, but after giving himself a moment he relaxes and slowly nods his head. What else is he supposed to do? He was never close to the third hokage, so of course the man hadn't noticed before, since he didnt really see kakashi and gai together. But at the same time, it has been three years. He's a little worried people don't realize if one of konaha's best just realized.

Gai is with his brand new team. He has just met the youthful warriors of tommorow and he can't wait to teach them and see the ways in which they all grow. He also can't help but relate to a lot of what they say, and he tells a few stories. Tenten and neji are board for the most part, until neji notices that gai is talking about his 'rival' a lot. 'Whoever this guy is, you're obviously dating'. Tenten and Lee look horrified by neji's declaration, but gai chuckles fondly and says "if you must know, next week will be the 5th anniversary of our youthful joining!". He doesnt understand why the kids look horrified all of a sudden.

The fifth time, the kids are older. They've grown so much, and changed even more. They're all in the village hidden in sand, making plans and chatting. Sakura is angry when she finally realizes, and demands to know when kakashi was going to tell them that he is with gai.

Lee and tenten are just as horrified as naruto at the declaration, but neji just rolls his eyes. He cant belive lee and tenten didnt fogure out who the boyfriend was long ago. They're too embarrassed to admit they forgot he had a boyfriend.

The last time, its painful to hear. Kakashi suddenly feels the weight of his guilt hitting him. He can feel the anger in obito's voice. The hatred. How dare he get what Obito was denied. How dare he allow rin to die, for either of them to be hurt, while he gets to live and be with his love. His soul mate. He can't move until he feels gai's hand on his shoulder, and he slowly looks up to see that stern look gai gets when he's being protective. The anger that burns behind that kind, sweet eyes that always seem to make kakashi feel just a little bit better about himself.

It's the last time because when gai gets out of the hospital, kakashi makes it very clear to all of their friends, their family, that they are together.

The kids are a little grossed out, but kakashi couldn't care less. He'll never let another day go by where no one knows who his heart belongs to.
