Explanations
part 4 of MM ao3
Danny winced, overwhelmed for a moment at the emotions Hood was projecting. A flurry of fear, anger, not again, pain being shoved at him as forcefully as if someone were screaming in his ear.
Danny raised his hands in surrender. “Look, we don’t mean any harm. I honestly have no idea what pits you’re talking about, but I do know a lot about the being dead thing.”
Hood didn’t move, just kept glaring at him.
Danny took a chance and projected peace, want to help, it’s ok.
Hood’s angry aura faded and he stumbled back a step.
“What was that?” Hood growled and Danny gulped as Hood’s aura flared again with anger, confusion, fear.
“Sorry.” Danny said. “I forget that new liminals aren’t used to projecting, but it’s just another form of talking. And you don’t need to worry, I’m also dead adjacent. “Though,” Danny paused, “I don’t know what the lazarus pits are.”
Hood was still tense but his aura had pulled back a little. “The Lazarus Pits are lakes of glowing green goo.”
“Huh.” Danny gleaned at Jazz. “We call the green goo Ectoplasm. But if these pits are what brought you back, I think they might be rancid. You stink.”
“Excuse me?” Hood took a step back as his aura flared with indignation.
Jazz cleared her throat.
“What my brother means is that the ectoplasm that brought you back may have been polluted. He can tell because he also has ectoplasm in his system which allows him to sense other sources of ectoplasm.”
“Explain.”
“Look,” Jazz said, “Why don’t we all sit down and I’ll make some tea and then Danny can explain better.” she sent a pointed look in his direction.
“Fine.”
Jazz nodded and turned and walked toward the kitchen where there was a table and some chairs. Danny followed her and so did Hood.
Danny fiddled with his hands as Jazz was making tea. Honestly, Danny was trying not to comment on the fact that the fully dressed vigilante looked kind of ridiculous sitting at their kitchen table.
“Would you like some tea?” Jazz said, looking toward Hood.
Hood paused before responding. “No thanks.”
Jazz nodded then turned back toward the kettle.
“Soooo….” Danny started. “Before we go on, i do need to know if you actually died, or if you just encountered some green goo.”
Hood didn’t say anything.
Danny sighed. “If it helps, I actually died and was brought back to life via green glowy stuff.”
Danny waited and was about to give up and wait for Jazz to lead the conversation when Hood finally spoke.
“I died, I’m not sure what brought me back. But then I was dumped in a Lazarus Pit.”
“Huh.” There weren’t a lot of things that could bring people back from the dead as far as Danny knew, but with all the craziness he’d already experienced in his own life, he wasn’t surprised. Though it was interesting that Hood had been exposed to ectoplasm afterward. What would that make Hood? A liminal, or a halfa like him? But as much as Danny would like someone else like him, since it wasn't ectoplasm that brought Hood back the man was probably just a liminal.
“Here you go, Danny.” Jazz said, setting a mug in front of him and then taking a seat next to him.
Danny inhaled the warm scent of spices and then looked at Hood. “So, how do you want to do this? I can do a quick info dump and then you ask questions, or you can just ask questions and I’ll answer them?”
“Info first, then I’ll ask questions.”
Danny nodded.
“First of all, ghosts are real.” he paused, but when Hood didn't say anything he continued. “They live in an alternate dimension and are fueled by and made of ectoplasm, the green glowy stuff. There are various things that can make a ghost, but we don’t need to get into that now. This is just the basics. When a human has a near death experience, or is exposed to ectoplasm they have the chance of becoming what we call liminal. That just means that they lean a little toward the ghostly side.” he glanced at Jazz, his gaze questioning and she nodded. “That’s what me and Jazz are. And that’s what I think you are.”  Danny waited for a moment, clasping his hands together in front of him. “Any questions.”
“How did you heal me?”
“Oh, yeah.” Danny shrugged and sat back. “As liminals we actually need some ectoplasm to survive and it can help heal us. Usually, the ectoplasm in our bodies heps us heal ourselves, but I think yours can’t since,” Danny wrinkled his nose, “whatever source you got yours from is obviously rank.”
“What does that even mean?” Hood said, but he sounded tired not angry.
Jazz smiled gently at him. “Ectoplasm that stays too long in the Living Realm, here, can absorb pollutants. Think of it like,” she hummed and tapped her finger against the table, “like air in an improperly ventilated area. If air isn’t allowed to move and flow it can become stale. The same with ectoplasm. It’s a form of energy that needs to flow and be filtered in the Infinite Realms, where the ghosts are, or it needs to be filtered by ghosts. But if it’s allowed to just sit in one area and build up, continually absorbing energy, but unable to filter or release it then it grows rank.”
“It’s complicated.” Danny said. “And neither of us is the greatest at explaining since we’re still learning. But yeah, ectoplasm is a form of energy that flows between dimensions.
Danny smiled at Hood, there were faint feelings of confusion, disbelief, denial, no true, not true, I’m alive. But Danny did his best not to push anything toward the other liminal. He didn’t want to scare the man.
“I need to go.” Hood said, standing abruptly.
Danny startled, but nodded. “Yeah, of course.”
Jazz stood. “You’re welcome back here anytime if you have questions.” Jazz smiled.
Danny felt the briefest glimmer of attraction come from Hood and while Jazz was good at not projecting, Danny could tell from her face that she was feeling similarly toward Hood.
Danny smirked. This would be fun.

Liminal Scarecrow
I see a lot of Scarecrow in DCxDP, usually as a plot device in tandem with his fear gas. And honestly, I’ll accept just about anything with a Scarecrow mention in it. However, there is one thing I doubt a lot of DCxDP fans know about from the DP side, which is the Scarebeast.
The Scarebeast is what was created when the Penguin decided to experiment on Scarecrow, essentially turning him into a living weapon.
It’s a giant monster that naturally produces fear gas in its body, and Scarecrow can only return to human form once the Scarebeast has been defeated.
I think that the Scarecrow could easily be a liminal of some sort, and the Scarebeast could be a manifestation of ghostly power.
Now, it should be noted that Scarecrow (to my knowledge) hasn’t died and been revived. He also hasn’t used the Lazarus pits. He gets beaten to hell and back on a regular basis, but he never actually dies.
However, we know that you don’t necessarily have to die to become a halfa. Vlad didn’t; instead, he was shot in the face with ectoplasmic energy by the malfunctioning proto-portal.
Also, we were never told exactly how the Scarebeast was created. Sure, we know that one of the Penguin’s scientists mutated him into existence, but we don’t know exactly what she used.
It’s not really so much of a stretch to think that he could have been exposed to some form of ectoplasm in order to stabilize or power his monstrous form, and as such became liminal (or a halfa).
Hell, all the other (canon) halfas in existence were created in a lab setting! Danny was mutated by ectoplasm and electricity when the portal opened, Vlad was blasted in the face by the previous portal, and Dani/Ellie was a clone.
Basically, give Scarecrow cool ghost privileges. He’s already got the creepy aesthetic. It’s what he deserves.

DP x DC: To Become Liminal
I’ve just been thinking about liminality a lot lately. It’s very much a thing that if I write something with Liminality, it’s probably going to be about liminality and how it affects a specific character, or at least that being a major theme
I don’t like being loosy goosy with liminality personally, it’s very much a less is more situation for me, it’s rare, it’s weird, and it’s hard to become is how I like to treat it. so bare with me everything after this is based on those sensibilities
Ectoplasm is dangerous. It’s the stuff Ghosts are made of but it’s also some kind of radioactive substance. That’s why even weak ghosts can be picked up by EMF readers and can make the lights flicker. It’s a type of radiation and it’s not safe for humans to be around in anything larger than what a couple of ghosts give off. Too much at once will kill you, and even too much over time could do that.
To become liminal is to incorporate ectoplasm into yourself, for your body to find a balance or die trying. Ectoplasm is already poisoning you, and if properly treated you might be fine with minimal complications after. The real issue is when it’s untreated and your body starts incorporating the thing that’s trying to kill you.
And the process is painful, incredibly painful.
Fever, headaches, muscle aches as your muscles corrode and try to rebuild themselves, nausea and vomiting as your digestive track morphs, stomach pain and internal bleeding as the ectoplasm eats it’s way through your stomach lining. It hurts as your body is constantly trying to break itself down and rebuild for day, weeks, even months. Think of Vlad in the hospital and how long he was there, even after the proto portal did the majority of the work and launched him past liminal into the start of being a halfa
and then, when the pain stops, your body is different, YOU are different. You’re no longer the same, you don’t feel the same, think the same, or even dream the same. Your dreams are more vivid and disturbing, you have strange cravings and urges, urges your new body wants but you find distressing
Jazz grew up in a house of ecto scientists, The stuff had always been around, but her parents acted like it wasn’t something to worry about. Sure, sometimes the food in the house made her feel sick and she’d end up vomiting, but food poisoning is normal every so often, The fevers were just her getting a cold or the flue, totally normal. But then the portal opened and that tipped her over the precipice. In some ways she was lucky. If she hadn’t been exposed so ling, the amount that flooded the house after the portal would have been enough to kill most people in a week. Her parents were fine because of their protective gear, but Jazz would have died. Neither her parents or Danny noticed the three days she spent in bed, covered in sweat and in pain. she felt like she was dying. She was
Jason died and didn’t come back right. Even after he clawed his way out of his grave, he was more of a zombie than a person. Then Talia had found him and taken him in. The Lazarus pits could work wonders, heal the dying, replenish vitality and youth, truly a thing of wonder. Unless you were alive and healthy. The pits destroy the living and healthy Jason was living when he went in those pits, and the only thing wrong with him was his mind. The Pits brought him back, but it wasn’t right. He spent weeks barely awake, barely able to eat anything, and everything hurt. It hurt like the crowbar had hurt. He dimly remembers Ra’s wondering if Jason had been a failure and if it would be a mercy to end him there. Then Jason got better, but he was different. His body moved different, he had cravings he just couldn’t understand, some of which horrified him.  And the Rage. The rage was beyond what was normal. This wasn’t the pit madness others had spoken of. That would go away or leave him a gibbering mess. He had his mind, but the rage was still there. Something had permanently changed
Jazz had just moved into the apartment across from Jason. Something about her was different. It was familiar yet alien in a way that intrigued and frightened him. Jazz seemed to have similar feeling about him.
Just two people who are more alike than they know and are struggling with the way that similarity had changed them. Maybe they find a sense in community in each other, they finally aren’t alone, Maybe they find comfort in each other. Finally, someone who understands what it was like to go through that, that knows what the dreams are like, what the cravings and impulses are like
could it be romantic? Certainly.
I just think there’s some really interesting things to be done with liminality in regards to examining a character and how this could affect relationships, romantic or otherwise

How Liminal & Why
The following is based off of common hc within the dp x dc fandom.  Featuring Anger Management (Jason x Jazz)
We have liminality: people exposed to enough ectoplasm that something within them changes.
Jazz is liminal
Jason is liminal
Jazz has not died
Jason has died
Jazz has most likely consumed ectoplasm due to her parents trying to cook with the stuff
Jason has not likely consumed the stuff
According to the fandom, Amity Park has ambient ectoplasm due to the portal and/or AP being a natural thin spot. Wouldn't that make the rest of town liminal?
If Jazz is known to have sharper teeth, better vision, a little bit stronger but has not died is she the same level of liminal as Jason, who I repeat died and resurrected via the Pits (also fandom hc has corrupted ectoplasm)? For someone to be liminal, on a boundary, are they to be alive but still have heightened abilities?
If someone like Jazz is called liminal, as per fandom, she's NOT a halfa, nor borderline one just has Essense of ghost like abilities.
Let's say we take Jason's liminal status, and give him a little extra, a more borderline halfa, but still not quite. Some semblances of intangibility, invisibility, a more gliding effect instead of flight or hovering.
Jazz would be ghost powers liminal, while Jason would be halfa liminal? Maybe? Or since Jason remains in Gotham, as per fandom (mostly), is thin in ambient ectoplasm, it equals it out. Each are powers liminal.
Jazz Liminality:
Heightened senses (spacial awareness? Night vision? Hearing?)
Strength increase
Sharp canines/fangs
Scary eyes?
Sensing other liminals/ghosts?
Jason Liminality:
Heightened senses (spacial awareness? Night vision? Hearing?)
Strength increase
Scary eyes
Sensing other liminals/ghosts (could be partial to awareness--> particularly towards Danny, but not Jazz?)
Sharp canines/fangs?
Jazz grew up around ectoplasm, clean ectoplasm, possibly consumed the stuff, and Amity Park is ambient ectoplasm. She has not died, yet she has traits of something other, something more. She probably had to learn how to defend and fight fairly quickly in a short amount of time. Gaining more exposure in a short couple of years. Not as much as her brother who is a halfa due to high voltage accident with ectoplasm, but definitely more than the rest of town. Would possession count as increased ectoplasm exposure? Would she be liminal but just within her spirit, unless consumption or danger of BBP (Blood Borne Pathogen)?
Jason grew up in the streets, learning hard and quick before being picked up and trained. If Gotham has barely any ambient ectoplasm with an already volatile kid, would the rest of the city be the same? One would assume it's so tiny that there isn't enough to measure, nor make a difference, maybe it's why Gotham is violent the way it is? He died, violently, but due to reality altering he resurrected, then brought back to health, though wrong, from something called the Lazarus Waters. Corrupted but unknown why? Were the violent final moments enough to bring forth liminality, though by all purposes it should be minor? The only symptom being the scary eyes when under intense emotions, even increased strength, lashing out when angry (per fandom’s hc of the corrupted waters causing the intense lash out).
While Jazz (per fandom) has been around ectoplasm in large and constant doses her liminality is there, stronger due to being exposed by fresh non corrupted ectoplasm, and she's been possessed, though unknown if just possession is enough to cause exposure. Common liminality in her is increased senses, strength, canines being borderline fangs, eyes flashing green (sometimes), though unable to sense other liminals and/or ghosts. Sometimes she gets night vision and better hearing.
Jason (per fandom), just dying with some sort of ectoplasm is enough to become liminal, no matter how corrupted. Common liminality in him is flashing of eyes when angry, increased strength, senses, and can sense other ghosts, normally Danny (due to his halfa status?), but not commonly towards Jazz or other liminals. Another commonality in the fandom is the corrupted ectoplasm from the pits is purified by/with the help of Danny. If the once corrupted ectoplasm is now pure, he can become a halfa, but based on other authors he's not quite there. At this point he is more liminal than Jazz, despite her having been exposed more often and in greater amounts.
At this point I can say this. Dying and being resurrected can increase one’s liminal status but it also depends on the duration and amount of ectoplasm. As if there's something else there, but also something more. Is the turning point an element mix with ectoplasm, whether corrupted or not can create a potential halfa, but it should be activated to get a true halfa? As for the liminal's abilities, it stems from the individual's already set physical attributes.
Jason can already fight, how to survive the street, how to be hyperaware of one's surroundings. This is why he may be able to sense other ghosts. Compared to his liminal status, Danny is dangerous but at the same time he's still very young. While he still has to learn and train, for new abilities and strengths, the initial knowledge of how is already there. It's just building off from that.
Jazz isn't much of a fighter, well she is, but she doesn't need to use it all the time, thus when she becomes severely contaminated, it grows with her, with her strength. While that knowledge is there, the knowledge of being hyper-aware was never taught, because she never had to be until the ghosts became a bit more of a problem. It was never already learned, so she may become sensitive, but she might never get a sense of sorts.
Are the other Batfam liminal? Would Dick have a higher tolerance of electricity since he uses them? Would Tim have a connection with computers and technology similar to Technus, though not to the same extent? Bruce and/or Cass being able to blend into shadows a little better? What of Damian or Steph? How would liminality effect Duke?
Are Sam and Tucker liminal due to their extended possession from Undergrowth and Duulaman respectively? Sam having a better understanding of what plants need? While Tucker has a better knowledge of how monuments of Egypt were constructed?
