Protip: Waiting in the ER is much more fun when you’re listening to Käärijä and Joker Out and reading Bojere fanfiction.
But fr though. Everyone else around me looks miserable, I feel miserable, but less so when CCC just started playing and I’m just smiling and bopping my head to the music. The power of the green gremlin and his Slovenian boyfriends 💚❤️

one of those sneaky evil things about America is that almost all the jobs that don’t suck out your soul and are creative and/or let you determine your own hours and workload do not come with any sort of health care or medical benefits. like working in theatre while doing freelance editing/writing sounds like such a dream to me up until the exact moment I remember that one ER trip would ruin my entire life

@baronessblixen not to shine a spotlight on you but yeah! Not required and it is also often not done. This is not my first fulltime 40+hr/wk job, but it IS my first to offer any paid time off.
I think all of my jobs with some sort of benefits included retirement but none besides this one offered any PTO, not vacation, not sick days. You take a day off, it was unpaid.
More white color jobs get an average of a whopping 10 days after 5 years, and after that we get spoiled with a whole 15! Woo!
Additionally, unless you are also working some corp job, working part time is almost a dead certainty your PTO is 0.
But really, it’s up to whoever your employer is. None of this is mandatory and the crumbs get treated like a gift.

randomly remembered this one person who was briefly hired as a doctor in my hometown’s clinic
apparently, during her job interview, she talked about how she was planning to commute to the clinic (okay) via plane (...??), like, just roundtrip flights to/from Boston MA multiple times a week
(said clinic was in the southeastern US. which is, uh, not particularly close to Boston, right)
at first she was like “oh i’m going to do this because my husband’s in law school in Boston” which, okay fair, people do what they gotta to solve the two-body problem
but apparently she also talked about how “sad” all the houses in the town looked, and kept saying a bunch of passive-aggressive shit about the place, like “wow it’s impressive what your town has been able to do with what little you have” and stuff like that
she said this during the job interview! what!!!
i mean maybe she just knew how desperate my hometown was for doctors. because the clinic still hired her anyway. turns out rural healthcare is a tirefire and you take what you can get even when it’s actively insulting/belittling you
(though the interesting other question is, how desperate was she, like, surely commuting to this place she clearly thought was Beneath Her was not her plan A or plan B or whatever)
anyway she spent six months on the job, complained relentlessly about how many patients were on medicaid, and then quit with like two days’ notice
wonder what happened to her.  what a weird interlude

I’m actually really tired of talking/hearing about the “selfishness” of not voting in a system that is not actually a democracy. So instead I’m gonna talk about all the actual *policies* in no particular order that everyone should be advocating for to make a system that actually results in something resembling a democracy.
abolish the senate. In the first US census the ratio of people who could vote in the least populous state to the people who could vote in the most populous state was about 1:10, now it’s about 1:80. It is crazy that we have had situations where democrats represented 180 million people and republicans represented 145 million, but they still had the same number of seats. THATS NOT A DEMOCRACY.
abolish the electoral college. Winner takes all system is stupid, non standardized ratio for people to college votes is stupid, having two presidential terms in my lifetime where the president didn’t win the popular vote is NOT A FUCKING DEMOCRACY.
standardize the number of house votes per capita. It’s crazy that Idaho gets one seat per almost a million people while Montana right next door gets one seat per 500k. STILL NOT A DEMOCRACY
ranked choice voting. Stop voting defensively and start having a forum where we can actually see peoples preferences. And while we’re at it let’s have proportional representation so we’re not stuck with a two party system
codify a reversal of the citizens United decision and get the money out of politics. Nobody should be able to give a politician tens of thousands of dollars. Period. We basically legalized bribery and I know this sounds crazy but I think we should not do that anymore.
anywho. I’m tired of fighting over candidates no one actually likes when we could be talking about advocating for systems that will result in getting candidates who actually reflect the policy positions of the country. If we don’t fix these things. This shitty choice will happen again and again even when the policies we actually want are MAJORITY OPINIONS.

You know what's extra awesome? Your doctor refusing to raise your pain medication as planned because she wants you to go to A&E (despite the immense lasting pain it will cause you) and then when you call again the next day being told you have to wait AN ENTIRE WEEK for an appointment (despite getting the first appointment on the same day you called)
