DWC February -  Day 1: Love is in the Air

@daily-writing-challenge
An ear would perk as the jack of all trades would ease herself down into the hold of the Wayfarer, Xaya's eyes narrowing as she crept about the quiet bowels of the spelljammer as she listened.  Her face grim as she eased silently along, her long legs carrying her like a stalking panther as the sounds began to grow clearer.  She could hear giggling and the soft cooing words of an older man and younger person as well.  The line of her lips growing tighter as she found herself in front of the of the door of her sister, Rey as she reached for the door handle.  Pushing hard to shove the old door aside as she now stood in the entry way of the room.
"What the hell is this?"
Two pairs of eyes looked up in both surprise and soft fear as they looked at the looming woman before them.  One was mismatched with a green and blue while the other was the dark pools of a long lost mother.  Both though bore the pale blue reflection of the creature in between them.
"Xaya!"  Rey piped in surprise as she jumped up from the floor.  Her eyes clearly in panic and caught mode as she danced about looking for an exit.  On the floor still sat their father, his hands raised up in mock defense as he grinned with the trademark of the family.  The blue light though was now on the floor and rolling about, in the mischievous cuteness that only kittens really seemed to be able to draw upon in their dark circle of hell they were born in.  This one just happened to also be shedding the tendril mists of the astral plane as it looked up with wide shining blue lit eyes.
Xaya grimaced as she saw the cat and slowly lowered her hands onto her hips, the grim line of her mouth never faltering as she spoke slowly.  "What did we discuss about pets?"
"But Xaya, it's not-" Rey began as Zexx slowly began to rise from the floor, his hands waving as he grunted up to his feet.
"Yeah kid, relax I mean it's no big de-"
The eldest Candell child raised up one finger to her father, who for a moment looked like he was about too shoot back with his own temper before seeing the true amount of anger in the artificers eyes.
"Ok maybe it is a big deal."
"It is," Xaya retorted as she crossed the room to stand in front of the younger middle daughter.  "You know the rules, Rey."
"We are LITERALLY light years from home and it was years ago, things are different than when I was a kid!"
"No," Xaya shook her heard.  "Nope.  No.  No.  You know the rules after what happened."
Zexx looked between them both, feeling a deep mixture of pain at not being there for what was obviously a traumatic experience in their childhood and curious to find out what exactly had occurred.  "What happened?"
"Stay out of this," Xaya snapped at her father, hearing the anger in her tone and also spotting the flash of pain in the man.  Her heart sunk a bit seeing pain before sighing and covering her face with her palm in frustration. "I'm sorry, it's just Rey hasn't had luck with pets."
"Hershel is just fine!" Rey pointed her finger at her older sister with a snarl.
"Hershel is!  But what about Kitty?  Or Albert?  Or Fruity?  Or Punchy?"  Each name drop looked like a blow struck to the younger sister as she flinched but did her best to recover in the face of her hoisting.
"Punchy?"  Zexx asked with a raised brow to match the question in his tone.
"He was adorable!"
"He broke your nose!"  Xaya exclaimed in answer as the two sister glared back at one another again.
"It was an accident!"  Rey screamed back.
Zexx came to stand between them both, thinking this was probably the best he could do as their father using his body as a shield for both of their flareups.  "Ok, ok, ok girls that's enough."
"Enough or not, she knows the rules.  No more pets."  Xaya reached to stab a finger toward Rey over the older Candell's shoulder.
Rey would fire back trying to squeeze past her father with fist and kick.  "I.  Am. Not a child!"
"Then stop acting like one, you spoiled brat!"
"Fuck you!"
"Fuck you!"
"Girls!"  Zexx shouted now above them both, his voice finding the slumbering paternal note as he let himself rise above the obscenities that he should not be so proud of his kids using.  "Stop it!"
The pair simmered now hearing his bellow while they glared daggers at one another past their father as Zexx spoke again.  "I don't know what the hell happened back then, though Light knows I wish I had been there.  But Xaya you have got to cool the fuck off ok?  And Rey you need to watch yer god damn mouth."
The daughters Candell both looked confused as they heard him speak, their anger turning quickly from each other to a new target.
Mistakes had been made.
"I beg your pardon?"  Xaya squared back with a growl.  "Did you tell me to calm down?"
Big mistakes.
Rey on the other hand was already backing up the 'watch yer mouth' with even more colorful language as the daggers were now all on the hero for hire.
Dread drained out of the man as slid out from between the women, leaning down to sweep up the blue lit creature still on the floor with a haze of spectral energy trailing it as it climbed up into the crook of his arm.  Backing up slowly as their words became even more pointed and angry at him as Zexx did his best to mumble an apology here and there between the diabolical thrusts of his daughters' vocabulary.
Eventually the doorway was exited and the door shut between them with a click as he let out a sigh, feeling the cold prickling of the catgeist crawling up to his shoulder before leaning his head forward against the wood.  "Cripes.  They are definitely my kids."
An ethereal meow slipped into his ear as Zexx had a hard time smiling as he let the slings and arrows of his daughters hit the weak barrier of the door.  "Yeah I know, and you are still my sweet girl Rosie."
Cat and captain left the door in a hasty retreat for the bridge of the spelljammer, the angry squabbling having turned from each other to a larger target.
All in a dad's work.

One of my two Professor Layton self-inserts! This one is Hershel Layton’s adopted child. His name is Castin, and is a bigender (both a boy and a girl) hild who uses he/she/they pronouns! She is older than Luke, but younger than Flora, putting them in the middle. He is very emotional and anxious, but can read others’ emotions and body language very well. They are very quiet around strangers, but gets loud and excited around people she trusts.
He lived in Misthallery, much like Luke, but lived with a pair of emotionally/mentally abusive parents. They met Hershel because Hershel found out there was a child who could read other’s emotions easily, and he thought Castin would be of help. She ended up tagging along with Hershel and Luke for their adventure in Misthallery, and, like Luke, ended up coming with Hershel. He said his parents had given their permission, but it was a lie. Hershel didn’t know this, but was aware that Castin’s parents were abusive.
Later on in life, Castin’s abusive parents find and come back for them, but Hershel protected Castin, put a restraining order on her parents, and officially adopted him (although they had been acting like a child and father far before this).
Castin is Luke and Flora’s sibling, along with Hershel’s child, as they are also adopted by Hershel.
