Headcanons! I'm limiting myself to one for each or else this post will become a dissertation ✨ Chai: He latched onto the rockstar dream at a young age and never let go despite his arm. He has an avid imagination and plays out conversations and entire scenes in his head (like the tutorial stage) because that's the only way he can see himself succeed. It's also why CNMN pointed out that Chai acts dumber than he is; Chai is too used to being called out for repeated failures. As chipper as he acts, it gets to him over time. 808: Peppermint gathered a majority of trinkets to design the hideout through trial and error of the temporal displacement program. (That includes occasionally making trips to the cafeteria to steal food. There's probably a rumor among employees that things will occasionally disappear via local ghost cat or something) Peppermint: She's always felt disconnected from her family with how hard Kale alienated her and how busy Roxanne was, so she built 808 shortly after running away to be her one loyal companion. Korsica: Endured plenty of hazing when she was first hired. The only reason she stayed was because Kale initially presented himself as a competent successor to Roxanne and convinced Korsica that she needed to be the change she wanted in the company. Turns out he was manipulating her simply to see if he could. Macaron: Macaron described Roxanne as someone who separated her work life from her home life. As close of a relationship he had with her, Macaron was still never aware of Peppermint, which means he likely wasn't aware of Kale either until he took over. In a twist of fate, he'd end up working with Roxanne's daughter ~ CNMN: As a psychological analyst, CNMN was a potential model Macaron was planning to roll out as the head of R&D. Most of Macaron's ideas stemmed from the motivation to help others. After he was fired, CNMN was there to help Macaron through low points while encouraging a plan to get back at Zanzo. CNMN might have also indirectly linked Peppermint to Macaron. Rekka: Spent some time in jail as a result of a betrayal. Kale used that to make it clear that her job options were limited with a prison record. Zanzo: Has dyed his hair a variety of different colors before deciding that green was superior Mimosa: Used to unwillingly participate in child beauty pageants, which shaped her view of the cruel fashion world and how exploitative it was. The only way she could succeed was by ruthlessly cutting down competitors. Kale tempted her by offering free reign to perform at Vandelay Roquefort: While his degenerative disease was fatal, Kale didn't need to go all out and give him a mecha wolf form. Roquefort likely saw the company's decline as a result of Kale's executive changes, yet couldn't say much because he owed his life. Kale: Every character in the game has cybernetics. However, for some, it's less clear whether the replacements were due to a disability or purely cosmetic. Kale's body is absolutely cosmetic. He shows it off like a new car in the fight with Chai. He did it because it was cool and because he could. Roxanne: SPECTRA really hurt her. Kale's initial version wasn't perfect, so he updated and restructured the program gradually in preparation for launching Project Armstrong. Roxanne watched as what little control she had left slipped away until she lost herself entirely. By the time she was freed, years had passed.

So something I’ve been thinking about with Hi-Fi Rush is that clearly there’s disabled characters and none of it is ever made into a Big Deal.

Yeah, Chai got a prosthetic arm. It’s wicked cool

Yeah, Peppermint lost a leg. There’s some potential lore there

Yeah, almost everyone else has Vandelay parts but we never even learn why or if they’re just meant as enhancements. For example, does Zanzo have the neural implants just to get his ideas out of his head faster or because he needs that accommodation? It’s never addressed because it doesn’t really matter

The game never makes disability or accommodation feel weird, out of place, or negative. It just…is

HOWEVER, Chai is blamed for being “defective.” Throughout the game he is reduced to being known as “the defect” that needs to be wiped out (or experimented on/with in Zanzo’s case).

None of this is Chai’s fault. It’s Kale who threw the music player into the Armstrong machine and yet Chai is blamed for it. At one point Rekka even says that HE ruined her perfect no defect record as if his existence was the mistake and it’s his fault.

Anyway, as a disabled person, I think this was a wonderful way to bring in ableism and what being disabled can look like in the world into the story while keeping the upbeat, fun vibe of the game.

I think every disabled person has felt blamed for simply existing (either people think you aren’t doing enough to “fix” yourself or you must have done something wrong to cause your disability or you’re even just making it up/being lazy/etc). It was so nice to see that reflected in the game while still seeing all of these disabled characters kick absolute ass in fights and also just exist in the world.

I sure most know this but I noticed no one mentioned anything about it

So as we know Peppermint is 23 and Kale is about 38(Probably the best number we got according to the creator) 38-23 is well 15 so Kale was 15 when his sister was born. And as we know Peppermint has been clearly the favorite child since literally she would have been the one to take over if she never had left. Now imagine being in Kale's situation, you most likely want to be like your mom and take over then you get a sister suddenly. Then that chance of ever taking over your mom's company becomes slim, despite you are the oldest and usually in history or that the oldest is the one to get the 'throne' The youngest kid only would ever become heir to the throne if A the oldest one is unable to do it do to death or sickness or B they turn the title down and leave. But the only one that could fit this would be A but Roxanne would have clearly used Vandelay to heal her son upright if he did get truly sick which I theorize he got into the same accident as Peppermint that made her lose her leg or he got badly sick like Roquefort maybe that's why he let him join Vandelay cause he knew how it felt to be so sick that your body is failing you. Yet the description for Kale Boss looks said the keyword 'upgrade'. So either Kale never had the robot body before and decided now was his chance to actually live then suffer or he had a robot body but it wasn't cut out to him either he did need a better one for his health or he just wanted to feel stronger. The key thing is that Peppermint does mention Kale is always used by people but he would be an adult by the time Peppermint could even remember the earliest thing in her childhood. So not sure how she would have known who Kale was if clearly, she wasn't there for his life. I may be sounding crazy but I'm sure I would be real upset if my younger sibling suddenly became the favorite and took a dream of running my family company in seconds. I know Kale was a teen when Peppermint was born and babies need a lot of attention but we all remember how hard and struggling being a teen was. But I can say Kale is a bad person, I mean he mind-controlled his own mom to get what he wanted and tried to kill Chai many times and gave zero care when his coworker turned into fireworks/a pancake. But as we know people aren't born bad, they grow bad without the right help.
