Oh. Wrong Arakawa. It seems Akane didn't pander to general audiences the way Hikaru did, and that's what ultimately did her in.

The rivalry isn't over yet... but that doesn't change the fact that Akane lost her spot in the 4-way battle, despite using her father's signature story.

This is the first serious defeat that Akane's taken in a while, and she's taken it pretty hard, especially given how much she's invested into this particular performance.

Black Night Parade Volume 2 Review

I think a lot of people have looked at this manga, seen the Christmas setting and maybe even the art, and decided it wasn't going to be that good. I'm even certain that a good few readers of volume 1 don't have high hopes for the series.

Volume 2 has arrived, and with it resolutely proves that not only is Black Night Parade a great read, it's poised to be a great series.

This is the result that I expected going in. Hikaru does manage to beat Akane by one point, but Akane swept everything aside from the streaming audience. Her technical skill wasn't able to make up for Hikaru's popularity, and you can really get that this isn't going to sit quite right with either of them. Akane wanted to win and Hikaru wanted to beat Akane, but she once more had to come up against the fact that Akane's technical skill is on a higher level than hers for now. So they each continue to have a rival driving them forward. Ikken gives a pretty strong appraisal to Akane's performance as well and recognizes her talent.

And at the end Akane can't hold it in anymore as she tears up while reciting the words to Jugemu. She wanted to prove that her dad's rakugo was worthwhile, and she feels like she came up short. Just like before, everything looks blurry.

Akane Banashi Chapter 56

 The Renseikai is kicking off, and Akane absolutely kills it!

And that’s all we get to see from her performance.

We also get Akane’s new rivals (I hope they stick around), Kaichi and Hikaru, both Zenza under Arakawa branch families.

Just imagine the Zoolander staredown meme happening here.

I’m bummed we didn’t get to see a performance from Akane or Kaichi, but hopefully next chapter we’ll see Hikaru establish herself as a long-term rival!
