100 Days of Sweat
Tumblr media
Welcome to the official admission post for the 100 days of sweat challenge! *plays the conquer theme song and does a booty pop* This is a pretty long post, but has everything you need to start, so read on!
READING TIME: 6 minutes.
OoOh? What's that?
Thanks for coming out of the cave! In short, it's a consistency challenge to turn working out into a habit.
You've basically got to move your body for a 100 days straight. No slacking, no backing out!
Most take on this challenge personally, but I felt accountability would be great for those beginning with exercising & those who can't seem to keep their streak (cough, me).
Sounds fun! How do I join? Do I need to do a booty pop too?
Booty pops are appreciated. But here's how!
1. First things first, decide whether you'll be joining via IG, Discord or staying on Tumblr.
2. If using IG, reply to this post with your handle or (alternative) if you'd like, join Discord instead! For that, click here to join the server!
(NOTE: Those who joined via the first post I created regarding this needn't reply again! I've already added you to the list.)
3. Lastly, boost this! Reblog, get your followers to join! Drag your friend or sibling in! (already dragged my bestie into this in case no one joined in lmao)
Important PSA: yO, ANYONE can join! All my beginners and winners, young teens and old pals, drarry fans and johnlock shippers, team cold water AND hot water (sparing y'all because I stan working out more), EVERYONE!
Here's what I'll do:
I'm creating an IG group for those interested in staying fully committed. (Pros include making friends! Or enemies, for a hundred whole days! Some of you might even get married together, I have high hopes because wedding cake is everything)
Sayani from @studign-stars will be the admin for Discord! You can hit her up for queries, if any.
In short, there'll be 3 separate groups. One for those joining via Discord, one for those on the IG group, and a third for those staying on Tumblr.
If you wish to use any other platforms like Snapchat and Twitter, feel free! Also plug your progress on Tumblr too so we can hype each other on! (tag stuff with #100dos)
+ That said, I highly suggest joining either one of the groups, for accountability does wonders. It's now up to you, fellow warrior.
How to prep for this challenge:
OhO! There's a whole lot prepping to be slayed. To finish this challenge as smoothly as possible, here's a few steps. Make this easier for yo’ lazy bum.
1+ Firstly, grab a marker and scrap paper (when you on a student budget, cuz same) and write down numbers from 1 to 100. I did 1 to 30 to prevent myself from being overwhelmed, but do right them numbers to gain momentum.
2+ Take couple before photos. From the front, and the side. If you don't want to, take them anyway and store it in a folder you never open. Also measure your weight, and if you have a measuring tape, take other basic measurements of the chest, waist, arm etc.
3+ Coming to the main part! Pick your 'base’ routine. This is the primary workout you wanna do 2-3 times a week. It's the main course!
For beginners, I suggest choosing a 15 min full body workout. Do try it out before you start 100 days— make sure it's challenging enough.
For those who already move their bodies, pick a workout that aligns with your long-term goals. If you want toned legs, pick a leg day routine. If you want abs, focus on abs.
My base routine is the Beginner's Bodyweight Workout (BBW) from the NerdFitness website. I do 3 sets of the entire routine (takes around 25-30 mins) thrice a week.
So, do some research and pick a workout! Doesn't have to be an hour long at all, just make sure it's time-effective and challenges you.
4+ Find your cheat day workout.
Yikes, the wording is kinda incorrect, but anything for the clickbait.
This is the workout you do 2 days a week, and is the second most important workout. (This means: 3 + 2 = 5, you’ve now got five days planned!)
I do Alexis Ren’s ab routine (I hate it) twice a week because abs are my target zone. For you, it could be arms, thighs, butt, anything!
5+ Leave your last two days for simple moving.
It's up to you to decide what's going to be cooking in the remaining two days. For suggestions, you can pick a fun activity, say yoga, handstands, cartwheels, splits, any form of dancing like hip-hop, Zumba etc.
I'm trying to do a handstand this year and get my middle splits already (I fell off track so I still have quite a way to go) so I'll be stretching and doing hand flexibility exercises in the last 2 days.
Or you can just go for a jog or a power walk. Just keep the momentum going!
A quick recap:
To summarize, you're doing a major workout 3 times a week, a toning workout (mine is abs) twice a week and a fun activity in the last two days.
Also, mix this up. Your muscles need time to heal, and I strongly emphasize leaving the next day free for lighter activities after doing a major workout. Here's my routine, as an eg:
Tumblr media
Do remember that this is just a STARTING POINT, because we don't want you to wake up everyday and be like “wut I do today.” It's now your mission to plan your workout routine. Consider taking more workload or reduce it as per your level (this is definitely a lot, try reducing if you're just beginning).
Also important: DETERMINE your workout routine NOW. I spent 2 years (only stopped like 3 months ago) doing YouTube videos haphazardly. This works, because you are working out after all, but it's a pretty lousy method if you want consistent results. Also makes you depend on motivation to workout (which has probability results equal to me marrying Tom Felton), whereas if you had a routine, you'll have to workout because it's in your schedule and you'd be a loser to lie to your schedule.
Is this a lot? It's a lot. I know.
If this is overwhelming you, don't back away darling. Face your fears. Here are some reasons to not back out—
The entire challenge is flexible: You don't have to follow that routine ^ if you don't want to. Starting out, you can do a major workout 2 times a week and fill the other 5 days with fun stuff. You can always change the routine later, 100 days is a long ass time.
The challenge fucks with your mindset and strengthens it: 100 days of continuous movement is CRAZY. Can you imagine how strong (mentally too!) we'll all be at the end? You'll have grown so much!
Working out will become a habit: I've been working out for 2 years now, and it has positively affected every single sphere of my life. Exercising is the #1 habit I suggest everyone build. Since science says it takes 66 days to build a habit, we're ON it.
You'll be really proud of yourself: I know I'll be. I'm literally going to hug y'all at the end of it, and sing jingles about how far you've come. 2019 will have been slayed.
I could go on and on, but this is it. Now's the moment. This is about doing something you're afraid of. Taking risks. Learning, falling, getting back up.
Thence, ladies, gents and non-binary pals, THIS is the 100 days of sweat challenge. You're cordially invited to it.
(We're dramatic, yes.)
🌻 !!! MAJOR PSA & DEADLINES:
The challenge itself begins on 10th April, 2019.
You'll be added to the IG group latest by 7th April.
Because I'm your mom, I'll add everyone in, tell you the details and everything. If you’ve got any questions, jump into my inbox now and get them answered.
That said, please remember that I won't take anyone in midway (no, not even if you buy me free tacos for a year). So join in now & spread the message! The more, the merrier! Bring beer too!
Thanks for joining in! This will be promising and hugely interesting (accountability can do wonders, but we'll see). I'll be waiting for you on the other side with my stuffed animals, cIaO fReNdOs!
— Nandini (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡ 💌

The Elemental Sides: Chapter 8
Urban fantasy AU: The Sides are four spirits trapped in an amulet. When Thomas finds it and puts it on, he gains the powers of the four elements…or that’s what should have happened, but mistakes were made. Now the Sides have to coach him in their respective elements while Thomas deals with both his new powers and his ability to see into the magical realm. Not only is magic real, but there’s some pretty intimidating stuff out there, and only Thomas and the Sides have the power to stop it.
A/N: It is here! Chapter 8, my favorite number! It’s been about a year since the creation of this blog + the very first chapter of TES. Thanks so much for sticking with me. May this story be finished by 2020!

*** Thomas and Roman, spirits, faced off in the middle of his living room.
“No hitting,” warned Patton. He paused. “Okay, that’s the only rule. Go wild, kids!”
They moved at the same time. Thomas’ hand burst into flame, but it was literally sucked out of his grasp by Roman and thrown back into his face. Since it was translucent, the fire passed through him harmlessly and splashed against the far wall.
“Point to Roman,” Logan said to the book in his hands. He marked a tally on Roman’s side of the chalkboard, but it ended up sideways because he wasn’t looking at what he was doing.
“Three weeks and I haven’t gotten a single point,” groaned Thomas. “Against any of you!”
“It’s about more than just who can fire the first shot, cowboy,” said Roman. “It’s about willpower! You have to really control your powers, not just summon them.”
“Okay.” Thomas swept his hair out of his face, vaguely wondering how Virgil could stand having bangs in his eyes all the time. “Can I try again?”
“More like you can try, again. Patton, count us off!”
“Three-two-one-fight!”
This time, Thomas was a little more prepared. He waited for Roman to pitch the first fireball before catching it from midair and chucking it back. The fire flew back and forth between them before Roman caught it and extinguished the flame.
“That’s cheating!” Thomas protested.
“I think not! I was just getting bored.”
“Boo, lame.”
“I agree, point to Thomas,” said Logan, marking the board.
Thomas fist-pumped while Roman protested. “I was just playing around. Look! More fire! I can keep going.”
“Actually, you should be done for the day,” Virgil interrupted. “I don’t want Thomas to run out of energy. He promised he’d practice water today, too.”
“Aw, but we’re on a roll!”
“No, he’s right,” Thomas agreed. “I’m kind of falling behind with water.”
“No such problems with earth, because I am the best teacher,” Logan muttered into his book.
Roman turned on him. “Are not!”
“Completely am.”
“I don’t mean to brag, but Thomas is pretty darn good with my air powers, considering he’s an Earthbender,” Patton remarked. (He’d finally caught up with Avatar and had completely bought into how they handled elemental powers in the series.) “So maybe he’s just natur-air-ly talented?”
“You’re impossible.”
In the weeks since he’d fought his first shadow monster, Thomas had had a lot of adjusting to do. While he was capable of destroying the smaller shadows when he came across them on busy streets, in buildings, and even in his own apartment, the Sides continued to coach him. They didn’t want another close call like they’d had with that big one in the grocery store.
It didn’t feel like he was making much of a difference, but the Sides applauded him every time he destroyed one of the little bad-vibe blobs. They were even thrilled every time he showed that he was improving with their powers. He couldn’t see any tangible difference in the world around him, but through their encouragement Thomas did start to feel a little like he was becoming a hero.
Meanwhile, besides the Sides, life continued as usual. Thomas was working just as hard on his videos. He was hard at work on his second episode of Cartoon Therapy–which was, of course, based off Avatar.
The first time he showed up to the space they’d rented, already in his Picani garb, Joan gave him a weird look when they met him at the door. “You’re still wearing that necklace?”
Thomas looked down at the crystal. Being huge and sparkly, it was difficult not to notice and impossible to hide under a shirt. “Oh, yeah, guess I am.”
“I mean, wear whatever, dude. But I don’t get what it has to do with Picani.”
“No, you’re right, I’ll take it off.” Thomas reached for the chain. Of course he had to take the crystal off sometimes, for showering and stuff, but the Sides always hated it when they were forced back in the crystal for a while. When he wasn’t in direct contact with it, they couldn’t keep up their mind palace and all the other cool amenities they’d built inside. They had to go back to the dreamless state that Logan explained they’d existed in for the last fifteen years.
He waited a beat just to make sure he had their permission. Roman, acting emissary, appeared. He simultaneously gave Thomas a thumbs down, shrugged, and stuck his tongue out: we don’t like it, but you do what you need. Thomas tugged the crystal off and felt a little lonely when their presences disappeared from the back of his head. After that, the filming session went fine.
Between managing his YouTube career, finding time for his friends, and practicing his steadily improving magic powers on unsuspecting shadow blobs, Thomas was busier than ever. So it surprised him when Patton started egging him to take a vacation.
“Now? Really?”
“Sure, kiddo! Don’t you deserve a mental health day?”
“I’m fine,” Thomas said with a frown. “I mean, I’m holding up okay…”
“He’s right, actually,” Logan said, popping into view in Thomas’ chair (Thomas and Patton were currently in the kitchen trying to cook up some Indian food, and it was going poorly). “We’ve been discussing this. While I agree it’s important to keep your mental state functioning properly, the purpose of this vacation would also be to allow your to exercise your powers in ways you might be less familiar wi–Patton, watch out!”
“Oops!” Patton had thrown a handful of curry leaves into a pan on the stove, which was filled with oil sizzling at max heat. It immediately burst into flames.
On instinct, Patton dodged in front of Thomas and shot a blast of air at the smoking pan. It did nothing but spatter oil droplets all over the table and Logan, who was unamused. Thomas put out the fire by scooping it up in his hands and extinguishing it.
“...Oops.”
“Patton, honestly. How did you ever feed yourself?”
“I get the feeling it involved a lot of ice cream for dinner!”
“Whew.” Thomas exhaled. Fire was actually a lot less scary when you could just kind of...erase it.
“As I was saying,” Logan said in a clipped voice, “by ‘vacation,’ we’re not telling you to hang around at home in your pajamas for three days. No, what we’re suggesting is that you go learn some history....about the origin of your powers.”
“Wow! I could do that?”
“Well, of course. Where do you think we got the crystal?”
“I have no idea! Where?”
Logan paused. “...We don’t know either. Our time in the crystal left our memories, ah, spotty. Some vital details such as this have been lost. However, Virgil, who tends to remember these things best, has an inkling of where exactly he obtained it.”
“That’s right,” Virgil said, appearing–and sitting on the table, but luckily his butt was a ghost at the moment anyway. He glared at Patton. “And jeez, Pat, were you trying to give me a heart attack?”
“Oi’l be more careful next time!”
“Pretending I didn’t hear that. Thomas, here’s what I remember. When we, uh. When we decided to test the whole crystal thing, we knew we needed a good one, obviously. We got our powers and then we started searching around for something, some kind of gem, that matched the parameters Logan laid out.”
“Robust. Undamaged. Prismatic. Sensitive to magic—by that, we mean whether it reacted when placed in certain stress simulations involving the shadows.”
“Uh, yeah. So I found a good one in this one super goth back-alley jewelry store–”
Thomas gasped. “Borgin and Burkes?!”
“No? I don’t know what that is? Look, anyway, I found a good one,  s–uhh, I stole it–”
“WHAT”
“–and brought it back to everyone else.”
“You STOLE it?” Patton cried. “But that’s totally against why we wanted it in the first place! Fighting evil! Remember?”
“I know. But the alternative worried me more.”
“Well, I’m not really happy about that, sport, but it’s too late to do anything about it now. Maybe they won the lottery in the last fifteen years and got their money back…?”
“Virgil, do you recall the name and location of this place?” Logan asked.
“Can’t say I do. Well–I think it was near Florida. I remember driving for a while during the night. There was a lot of fog….I could sort of tune into it with my powers, so I could sense the surrounding area. Something was near me, like a big, dark cold spot. It might’ve been a shadow, but bigger than one I’ve ever seen.” He shuddered. “I had to get away from it, so I turned off the highway, drove for a while, stopped at a gas station, and...there it was.”
“Well, that’s vague,” Thomas mused.
“Do you think that we’d be able to recreate your path if Thomas were to search for it?”
“Uh….maybe? It’s possible?”
“That’s sufficient enough for me,” Logan declared. “All right, Thomas, the parameters of your vacation are this. You are to find the location and source of this crystal and interrogate the owners of the establishment for information.”
“Information like….”
“Well, whether there’s a way to expedite your learning process. Whether we can get out of this crystal. Perhaps we can find a way for all four of us to assume solid form without damaging you.”
“And this involves a lot of driving…” Thomas said to himself. “So, if this is really important to you guys, it sounds like we’re going on a–”
“ROAD TRIP!” Patton hollered, throwing up his arms and upturning the pan on the stove, which had been steadily burning their dinner to a crisp the entire time. Oil, curry, chicken, and the whole mess slopped onto the stove and promptly exploded in a shower of hot oil.
“...road trip.”
“PATTON!”

Tekashi 6ix9ine Is BACK & Making Everyone BIG MAD, Including Billboard & Snoop Dogg! + Gets Help From Known Clout Chaser Celina Powell
Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine is ruffling feathers after being home from prison for a little over a month. Watch the "GOOBA" rapper come after Billboard and Snoop Dogg (with help from famed clout chaser Celina Powell) inside...
Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine is causing controversy on social media just like he used to do before he was released from prison on racketeering charges last month. He was released on April 2nd and kept a pretty low profile on social media…until now.
On Monday, Billboard released the Hot 100 chart and Tekashi’s new single “GOOBA” debuted at the No. 3 spot, falling behind Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber’s new “Stuck With U,” which nabbed the No. 1 spot. Doja Cat’s “Say So Remix” featuring Nicki Minaj fell to No. 2.
Now, the “FEFE” rapper is taking aim at Billboard, calling them a fraud.
”You can buy No. 1’s on Billboard,” Tekashi said in an IG Video posted to his official account.
The 23-year-old rapper claims he and his crew have an “ongoing investigation” and they found out that Ariana supposedly purchased thousands of units with “six credit cards.” Well, it certainly wouldn't be the first time an artist did that.
”Explain how you buy 30,000 [units] with six credit cards,” he said in the video.
"@billboard CAUGHT CHEATING. @billboard YOU’RE A LIE AND CORRUPT. YOU GOT CAUGHT CHEATING AND THE WORLD WILL KNOW," he wrote in the caption of the video.
He also named dropped Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj in the video. Peep the clip below:

And he hopped on IG Stories trashing Billboard:
Tumblr media
So, here's the thing.  If you've publicly trashed and discredited Billboard and labeled it as a fraud, why on earth would you still care about being on it, let alone spend your own money to be on it?
After accusing Ariana of purchasing units, she went on Instagram to respond to Tekashi's claims.
She wrote:
"thank u to everybody who supported this song, this cause and made this happen. we love uuuuu so much.  there’s so much to celebrate today. however, i would like to say a few things. anyone who knows me or has followed me for a while knows that numbers aren’t the driving force in anything i do. i’m grateful to sing. grateful to have people who want to listen. grateful to even be here at all. i didn’t have a number one for the first five years of my career and it didn’t upset me at all because from the bottom of my heart, music is everything to me. my fans are everything to me. i promise i couldn’t ask for another fucking thing. so with this celebration today, i would like to address a few things which i don’t usually do (i don’t give my energy to drama or strange accusations normally but this has gone a little too far)...my fans bought the song. JUSTIN’S fans bought the song. OUR fans bought this song (never more than four copies each, AS THE RULES STATE). they are ride or die motherfuckers and i thank god every day that i have them in my life. not just when they fight for us to win (even when i ask them not to as i did this week) but because they’re some of the greatest people i know. sales count for more than streams. u can not discredit this as hard as u try. to anybody that is displeased with their placement on the chart this week or who is spending their time racking their brain thinking of as many ways as they can to discredit hardworking women (and only the women for some reason.....), i ask u to take a moment to humble yourself. be grateful you’re even here. that people want to listen to u at all. it’s a blessed position to be in. i’ve had a lot of “almost number ones” in my career and i never said a goddamn thing because I FEEL GRATEFUL TO EVEN BE HERE. TO WANT TO BE HEARD AT ALL .... and you should feel that way too. congratulations to all my talented ass peers in the top ten this week. even number 3. and thank u to @billboard for this honor. and thank u to everybody who helped us raise a lot of money for a very important cause this week. love u all a lot."
Tekashi then responded to her, saying he wasn't coming for her. His beef is with Billboard.
"@arianagrande All I’m saying is I worked super hard to make it out of Brooklyn NY. I speak for the millions of kids who aren’t as fortunate as you. The millions who weren’t fortunate to be on T.V.. LIFE is REAL when you’re on welfare LIFE is REAL when you grow up with out a father. You don’t know what that is like. You say for me to be humble .... I don’t think you know what humble is.......... YOU ARE VERY TALENTED AND BEAUTIFUL GOD BLESS YOU. But you will NEVER UNDERSTAND MY PAIN"

Now, Billboard is addressing Tekashi's allegations. In a new article, they explained how this week's numbers were calculated, breaking down how they calculate streams and airplay. Billboard also responded to Tekashi's claims that Ariana's team purchased unites with "six credit cards."
"Billboard and Nielsen Music/MRC Data conducts audits on all sales reported with access to purchase-level detail, and works with data partners to recognize excessive bulk purchases and remove those units from the final sales total. All titles this week, as in every week, were put under the same scrutiny. (Billboard has reached out to Fame House/Bravado, retailer and reporter of director-to-consumer sales, for further comment about the sales data provided for 'Stuck With U.')"

Now, for the Tekashi & Celina Powell vs. Snoop Dogg drama.
It started when Snoop continued to call Tekashi a rat and encouraged others to NOT support a "snitch" like him. That's when Tekashi got petty and decided to post a video of Snoop cheating on his wife, Shante Broadus, with famed clout chaser, Celina Powell.

Tekashi also posted a video of himself watching a video of Suge Knight insinuating Snoop is an informant. Check it:

Before Snoop deleted the post, Tekashi hopped in his comments, pointing out that Snoop never denied there's paperwork that would confirm he cooperated with law enforcement. "Still hasn't even denied the paperwork. lEaVe Me AlOnE 'you're blowing my cover,'" he wrote.
Tekashi of all people calling somebody a snitch.  That's rich.
The rainbow haired rapper also posted a screenshot of Snoop allegedly threatening him in DMs.

“Can someone tell the police snoop dog is threatening me [laughing emojis he mad,” he wrote in the caption of the screenshot. He has since deleted it.
Celina Powell then enters the group chat with a video of Snoop calling her. It's said she might have called him first and he was returning her call and that's how she got him on video:
"@snoopdogg I’m not interested in teaming up with you against @6ix9ine, stop calling me askin why I’m egging him on ... And showing me your dog @juelzbroadus so I don’t screenshot you, was a rookie mistake.. you know I stay with two phones #TEAM6IX9INE," she wrote in the caption.

Playing Games (Part 4)
This is based on a prompt I got: ‘I’m egging your house for a dare but your parent is a cop (…)so i told them that (…) you wronged me and now you’re coming outside and please go along with this ’
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
This is the last part.
"Are you up for something sporty?"
When Sana read that message she wasn't really sure what Yousef meant. This was the whole message and they had not talked after he left her house two days ago.
Only after a few moments Sana realizes he means the date.
He had asked her out. On a date. And she had said yes.
It would be a lie if she said that she didn't keep thinking about it in the past two days.
"Yes, always."
That was Sana's answer. She didn't mind doing sports and she's sure he doesn't mean anything too exhausting. But the thought that he's planning something and thinking of something that would make the whole first date thing less awkward makes Sana smile.  "Okay :D See you on Friday 😁" - Yousef
-
Yousef picked Sana up from her house, which almost made Sana faint because she was really nervous. She's not one to get nervous too often. But her family wasn't home to see her in that nervous mess and she somehow managed to recollect herself before opening the door for Yousef.
"So you're not telling me where we're going?", Sana asks, looking at Yousef.
He just smirks and shakes his hand. He has his hands in the pockets of his jacket and turns his head to Sana.
"It's a surprise."
Sana rolls her eyes at that but can't stop smiling.
"But I can guess?", she asks and raises her eyebrows in a questioning manner.
She looks so cute that Yousef has trouble concentrating on where he is going. She's wearing a light blue hijab and it might be his new favorite color.  "Sure. If you want to."
That makes Sana start theorizing immediately. Yousef just hopes he didn't hype it up too much. He wouldn't want her to be disappointed.   "Okay, I know we're not just going to sit around which is great. So..", Sana says and makes Yousef grin, not even noticing that she does. He's glad she likes the idea of doing something active.
But then she confuses him when her eyes widen and she stops walking. Turning to Yousef with her wide eyes she asks: “Oh my God, don't tell me you'll make me dance?"
At that Yousef doubles over with laughter. She looks petrified.
"What makes you think that?", he manages to ask when he calms down a little.
Sana narrows her eyes at him, wondering why he is so amused by that.
Shrugging, she answers: "I know that you love dancing and I don't know..  just made the connection."
They keep walking but Yousef's eyes are trained on the way they're going. Sana waits a few seconds. Then a few more. Finally she can't wait any more.
"You're not going to answer me?"
"It wouldn't be a surprise if I did.", Yousef smiles to himself.  He doesn't know how he is being so ... smooth. Before he arrived at her house he was a mess. Actually, it took him about seven minutes to ring the doorbell. Maybe the adrenaline of being so excited helps.  "But it's something I enjoy and hope you do too."
-
"We're playing basketball?", Sana beams at Yousef as soon as they arrive at the basketball court and Yousef stops walking.
Her smile makes him smile and he nods.
"Yeah. But not just basketball.", he says.
Sana cocks her head slightly and waits for him to continue.
Yousef takes a few steps, leading Sana's eyes to a picnic basket that's at the edge of the court. Behind the basket are a football and a basketball. Sana hadn't seen those before.
Yousef brought all the stuff here before he went to pick Sana up. A family friend that lives nearby had an eye on his stuff while Yousef was gone.
With one ball in each hand Yousef smiles at Sana while explaining.  "Since you say you're so good at basketball, and I said I'm pretty good at football, I thought we could play both. Just so it's fair to both of us."
Sana loves this idea and has to try really hard not to grin too much. She didn't think he would put this much thought into a first date. But here he is, exceeding all of her expectations.
"And...", Yousef continues, "If we're honest, we barely know each other. So I thought we could use these games to change that. Whenever you score, you get to ask me anything you want, and the other way round."
He realizes that he's speaking very, very fast. So does Sana. She wonders if he is nervous. As nervous as she is. But the whole way here and up until now he seemed so relaxed.
"Of course only if you want to and if you hate that idea, we can totally do something else. It's up to you, really." Sana didn't think he could get any cuter. Out of nowhere he started to blush and he talked even faster than before.
Holding out her hands and gesturing for Yousef to throw her a ball, she nods smilingly and answers: "That's a great idea."
Yousef is relieved that she didn't hate this. He throws her the football which she catches effortlessly.
"But..", Sana continues, taking a step closer and making Yousef frown in concern, "Is your ego strong enough to be beaten in both sports?"
Sana's confident smirk, the way she steps closer to him with the football under her arm makes Yousef wonder. Wonder how the hell he got the courage to ask her out. It's not like him to ask someone out on the spot. Like he did a couple of days ago. Just... the thought of not seeing Sana anymore and not having an excuse to see her was enough to do that.
"Oh, confident, are we? Let's go.", Yousef answers, dribbling the basketball and taking a step closer to Sana.
-
"Hey! That was cheating.", Yousef exclaims and narrows his eyes at Sana, still smiling. That smile hasn't left his face the whole time.
"No, we didn't set any rules and technically, I'm the goalkeeper and every other player at the same time.", Sana answers, trying to sound as serious as she can.
She had caught the football in her arms ... many meters in front of the makeshift goals. Yousef chuckles but raises his eyebrows at her and walks over to her.
"I thought the rules of football are clear.", he's standing just two steps away from her now. He doesn't look anywhere but at Sana.
Her eyes wander over his face for a second and then she pushes the ball against his chest, asking him in a challenging way: "Can I ask my question now?" With a last grin she takes two steps backwards and settles in the middle of her 'goal',
"Only because you are so cute.", Yousef whispers, Sana already out of hear-range. He looks at her and nods.
"Hmm..", Sana ponders what to ask him, then she knows and looks at him. "As a child, what did you want to be when you grow up?"
Somehow Yousef finds himself chuckling at this. She could have asked anything, but she chose this. It's very cute but there is real interest in her facial expression.
Kicking the ball up and down a bit, he answers: "For a while I wanted to be a lawyer like my dad. Then a police officer. And then a teacher. Which is still my goal."
"Aww, you wanted to do what your parents are doing before you decided for yourself."
Yousef drops the ball and covers his face with his hands for a moment. He gets awkward when she's being so cute.
-
"Wow.", Yousef says, shocked at how he got the ball in the basket from such a distance. Needless to say Sana is a hell lot better at basketball than he is.
Her eyes following the ball bounce back towards Yousef after he did a 3-pointer, Sana smirks. Why is she so happy that he scored? He's not horrible at basketball but he's not great either. Well, it balances the whole thing out. She wasn't horrible at football either but he was better.
"So, what's your next question?", Sana asks.
Sana almost sits down on the basketball court but Yousef points to the picnic blanket he had brought, with things to eat, as well. Without having to say it, both of them take one of the balls and go to sit down.
"Hm..", Yousef mumbles and more clearly says, "What should I ask Sana Bakkoush now?", while taking out all the things he had brought out of the basket.
They've been playing for some time now and many questions have been asked and answered. Neither of them have noticed how fast the time passed.
"You really didn't have to do so much.", Sana points at the things he sprawled out on the blanket. All of it between him and Sana.
His head snaps up to her and he shakes his head with a look, as if to say 'Of course'. But he just finally settles and asks his question.
"What's one thing you want to do in the next year?"
This question makes Sana thinks more than she thought she would. Things like graduating High School, getting into the university she wants to attend and going on more trips are the first things she thinks of. But the answer she feels comfortable enough to share with Yousef, who she only knows for a few days, is something she would usually not tell a stranger.
"Be a good person."
Yousef sees how Sana has this look on her face, she's really thinking about it and she really seems to mean the answers. When she looks at him and smiles shyly he knows not to ask further and he's completely fine with it.
-
After eating a lot, so much that Sana can barely sit because her stomach is so full, they lay down on the picnic blanket.
Both on far ends of the blanket.
The containers for the food and the cups in the middle, separating them.
For a while they just lay there, looking at the sky, and pointing out different clouds.
"This one looks like a rabbit."
"This one kind of looks like Shrek."
"Shrek?"
"Yes, Shrek. You know, the green ogre?"
"Yousef, I know what Shrek is. But how do you see him in that cloud."
Sana starts laughing and Yousef is quick to join her.
Sana feels at peace. She didn't think she could feel so comfortable around someone she barely knows. Well, she got to know him better today, that's clear.
They fall into silence, both of them looking up at the sky, seeing it changing colour, slowly.
Yousef is happy. It all worked out better than he thought it would. He is prone to embarrass himself. Especially around pretty girls like Sana. But even if that happened, it was fine. He felt comfortable around her.
Sana is the one to break the silence.
Sana turns to Yousef: "We need to quit playing games if ..", and then she quickly shuts up, not having thought it out much.
Yousef waits, wanting to ask if what? but he doesn't push. Even though he has no idea what she's talking about. Playing Games as in basketball and football? The part about the questions?  He turns back to the sky and lets it go.
Sana turns her head to Yousef again, both still laying on either side of the blanket. Yousef sees the movement from the corner of his eye and turns to look at her, too. Sana shows him a tiny smile which he answers with one of his own. Yousef expects her to say something, maybe finish her sentence but when she doesn't they both look up at the sky again.
Like that, neither of them looking at the other, hands resting on her stomach, Sana finishes her sentence.
"... if we're going to repeat this some time?"
Yousef quickly glances at Sana, sees her looking up at the sky and does the same. Sana knows he looked; she glances over to him and takes a deep breath. She didn’t want to be this straight forward but she means it. She enjoyed the day they spent together and hopes this happens again.
"I mean, about telling your mom that we didn't know each other before.", Sana clarifies. If this should happen again, them hanging out, no matter as friends or more, she can't lie to his mother.
Yousef is happy that Sana said what she said. He can barely contain his smile.
At first, when she said that they need to quit playing games he thought she would break off the smallest chance of them hanging out more, as ... something more than friends. Then she continued and he almost burst into a loud happy exclamation.
Sana sighs and rather mumbles: "She might not like me after that but... yeah.."
Yousef shakes his head, eyebrows deeply furrowed. He doesn't want Sana to think that, it's not the truth anyway.
"Don't worry, that won't change her opinion of you."
His soft voice makes Sana smile but she quickly sits up and looks down on Yousef.
"Yeah? What's her opinion? She has one on me?"
Yousef nods, as best as possible laying there, "She does. She'll tell you yourself the next time you see her. But it's nothing bad, not at all."
Sana opens her mouth to ask more but she doesn't get to. Her phone starts vibrating and the call for prayer starts sounding from it. Just seconds later she hears the same thing from Yousef's phone.
They both shuffle for their phones, listen to it for a while and then stop it. Sana takes a deep breath to collect her thoughts and wants to say something but Yousef beats her to it.
"There is a mosque just around the corner if you want to pray."
Together they pack up the things into the basket, each take one ball and make their way to the mosque. They leave their stuff and part ways to go perform wudu.
-
Sana and Yousef take a different way back home. It's a little longer but it was as if they silently agreed on taking a longer way, to spend a bit more time together.
They walk past Yousef's house.
Sana only realizes that when they are almost at the end of the street. She stops and looks at Yousef, who didn't say anything about it.
"Hey, you shouldn't walk all the way to my house to walk back here.", Sana says.
Yousef shakes his head and looks at her as if this is the weirdest thing she ever said.
"No, I want to. It's fine really."
Sana rolls her eyes but chuckles. "Yousef, it's okay. I can walk home just fine."
Yousef nods. "I know you can."
But that doesn't mean he won't walk her home. Sana also knows that. She sighs and nods.
"Okay then. But at least put all this stuff in the driveway or so, so you don't have to carry it all."
Yousef agrees with this. He loves how Sana rolls her eyes but can't keep that smile off her face.  They walk up the drive-way and set the basket and the balls down at the door. Yousef said it should be fine and when they turn around to leave the door gets opened.
That makes Sana and Yousef turn around again.
In front of them is Yousef's mother. Instinctively Sana and Yousef look at each other. They both remember the conversation they had earlier, about not lying to his mother anymore.
Yousef doesn't know why he is so nervous about his mother seeing him with Sana. His mother knew that he would be going out with Sana. She helped prepare some of the food. Maybe it's because he has the feeling that Sana and him are on the same page. About hanging out again, soon. And this means talking to his mother.
The look on Sana's face when she looks from Yousef's mother back to him tells him one thing, she'll do it now.
"Hello, Mrs. Acar."
She smiles back at Sana and lets her gaze wander over to her son and back to the girl standing next to him.
"Hello, Sana. Did you have fun today?"
Sana nods instantly, which makes both Acars at the door smile.
"Mrs. Acar, do you maybe have a minute. I think, I need to tell you something."
Sana holds her breath. So does Yousef. They glance at each other for a second but then avert their eyes, looking at the ground shyly. Every second of Mrs. Acar not answering makes Sana loose a little bit of courage.
"Do you want to tell me that you two didn't know each other before you threw an egg at my house?", Mrs. Acar sounds amused, nothing else.
When Sana and Yousef's head snaps up so quickly and both of them look at the woman in front of them with wide eyes, at each other and back at Yousef's mother, she has to put a lot of effort into not bursting out laughing. Kids.
She crosses her arms over her chest and watches as the teenagers in front of her fumbles to find words. Sana is the first one that does.
"Yes... But Mrs. Acar I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have lied. It was a very stupid dare and I didn't want to back down from it and when you came I panicked and didn't know what to do. And I know those are just excuses, not a justification. I'm really sorry."
Sana rambles, she speaks fast.
Yousef doesn't really know what to say. He never lies, usually. Being caught in one like this is very foreign to him.
Mrs. Acar smiles softly and shakes her head.  "Sana, it's okay. I don't appreciate the egg thrown at my house but what I appreciate is you telling me the truth.", the tone of her voice is so soft that Sana finally looks up at her. She smiles slightly, which Yousef's mother imitates.  "Plus, you two are horrible liars. It was pretty obvious."
"I'm honestly very sorry.", Sana says once more, looking down on the ground.
"Sana, dear. It's okay. You came forward and told me the truth when you thought you got away with it. That's something not many people would do.", Mrs. Acar smiles at Sana.
Then she turns to her son and tells him: "If you want to keep Sana company on her way home, you should get going."
Seconds later Sana and Yousef stand alone in front of the door. They look at each other with wide eyes but quickly burst into laughter.
His mother knew all along. Sana knows from the look Yousef had on his face earlier that he had no idea. Neither did Sana, obviously.
Slowly, they make their way out of the drive-way and start walking.
"Let's play a game.", Sana suggests with a grin. She walks a step faster and continues walking backwards in front of Yousef.
Yousef tilts his head slightly and chuckles. "I though we're done playing games."
Sana shakes her head quickly. "No, no. There are still plenty of games I can beat you at."
"Wow, Sana. Are you still bitter that I won at football?" Yousef feels too much joy because of this.
Playfully glaring at him, Sana shrugs. "I'm not bitter. I'm just competitive."
Smiling at each other when they stop in front of Sana's house, they just look at each other for a few moments. The conversation they were having almost forgotten.
"I think there will be plenty of time for us to compete in different games.", Yousef says, knowing that Sana knows what he means.
"Yeah, there will be a lot of time for us to be playing games."

Day 2 - Los Angeles, CA, USA
First full day!
1. I’m usually pretty good at combatting jet lag but after sleeping at 10pm I was wide awake at 2-3am and struggled with getting back to sleep so snoozed till about 8.30am. Given I’m getting no sleep tonight with a 4 hour flight leaving at midnight, arriving at 6am (2 hours lost in time difference) it seemed worth it. I had fairly chill plans for today anyway. Breakfast was included where I’m staying and they had tea!! I had meant to grab some before I left and didn’t so was yum having one for the morning (with milk even which can be less common in the US). Mild panic as I got ready this morning / I couldn’t find my underwear! I’m using packing cells and the small’s one was missing. Sent a message to Amanda because she’d helped my final pack (thinking it was either in the lounge or awkwardly left at Auckland airport) but luckily neither was true and it was hidden in a pack within my pack!
2. I was meant to head on a tour to Getty Centre but my sleep in and general slowness meant I wasn’t ready in time. Instead once I checked out of accomodation I made my way to the bus stop and ordered a ticket online. LA is massive so I had made the call I wasn’t going to try do Hollywood and all that as we did it last time. Instead the Getty Centre was my plan and then just enjoy the Santa Monica/Venice Beach area. It’s quite overcast today so heading to museum to start was a good idea. The bus ride was good as got to see the non-touristy parts of LA as it winded it’s way through the streets past UCLA and the sorority / frat houses. Once you arrive at the Getty Centre you aren’t allowed to walk up the hill and have to ride the tram. While I was looking forward to a good leg stretch the tram ride was nice just to see the city from above (no photos as wasn’t overly visually pleasing. Being an overcast day). Looking very much like standard suburbia.
3. After spending a fair amount of time in them, I should know by now that museums of paintings just aren’t my cup of tea. I struggle to stay interested in seeing the 59th vase that all looks semi similar. After about 40 mins at Getty Centre I googled the must dos. Realised I had already ticked off a few (eg was standing in front of the Centre garden at that moment) then went and saw Irises by Vincent Van Gough before making my way back to the tram. There’s no reception at the Getty but luckily they had wifi so I checked I knew my bus route as well.
4. It was two busses to get to Santa Monica and I realised the stopover was in a shopping district in Westwood so thought it would be rude not to have a gander. Spotted both Chick-fil-a and In-n-Out burger making the decision of what to have for lunch tough (In-n-Out won). It was glorious! I also hit up Target and picked up some odds and ends (this was optimistic of me as my pack is most definitely full). My optimism continued and when I went past Adidas I could resist a second pair of runners to see me through the adventure. Luckily when I got to my pack I managed to get everything in apart from my snacks and eyedrops. I think I’m still getting used to the unemployed backpacker life because I’m shopping at a faster rate than I should...I also definitely do not have any room to buy more now.
5. By the time I got to Santa Monica I had time for one last stroll to the beach and Pier before packing my bags and hopping on the bus to the airport. While yesterday getting from the airport appeared complicated (it wanted me to go all the way downtown and then to travel to Santa Monica; but turns out bus 3 goes straight from Santa Monica to the bus terminal outside LAX. From there I caught a shuttle and had 3.5 hours to chill before the flight. I found myself a wee seat and read my book till it was time to hop on the plane. I’ve just started reading Still Me by Jojo Moyes which Amanda had seen and thought looked good but ultimately I have the goal of reading 40+ books this year (tracking this in Goodreads) so send through any recommendations you have 🤗Also! Did you know if you take a bike on the bus in LA it doesn’t go inside - they have a bike rack on the front. This was new to me!
Tally:
Burgers: 1
New weight of bag: 15.8kg
Daily temperature: 16 degrees Celsius - I hope this picks up ASAP!
Getty Centre Gardens / In-n-Out burger / last look at Santa Monica Pier / my bags! / treated myself to Panda Kitchen’s Orange Chicken at LAX (last US cheat meal 😬)

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: January 12, 2018
New Post Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: January 12, 2018
OUTLOOK
Welcome to another episode of the famous Friday Fishing Report! This week is a good one. We have a bunch of cool content for you and some good updates from the local fisheries.
If you guys are getting out fly fishing for steelhead or are preparing to get out, we have just released a great video with Fishing with Rod called Dissecting a Steelheader’s Fly Box. It goes over the concepts that Matt uses to choose flies for steelhead fishing and you get a peek inside his fly box. Check it out here.
On a product front it is that time of year again when many of us are escaping the cold and heading down south. We just got a big shipment of warm water lures for jacks, roosters, GTs and barracuda. We thought it would be a cool addition to revisit Matt’s How to hijack your family vacation with a travel spinning rod article. We have updated it and if you are heading on a vacation and would like to sneak in some fishing or you are specifically traveling for a fishing trip be it a fly or gear trip this article is worth looking at.
Ok, on to the report information. We have an update on the Vedder. The water is at a good height but we are seeing issues with coloured water due to slides in the upper river. We have heard of fish being caught but the water clarity is making things more challenging than normal. Check out the info we have in the Vedder report in the river section below.
The Squamish continues to be good and the road to the upper river is accessible as of Thursday. There may be some snow in the forecast but we are betting that it will be ok. Jordan hit the water this week and has some good updates for you if you are planning a trip. We have our Egg Fishing Course next week so we should have even more info then.
The Stave and Capilano reports have updates. We have still not heard much from the limited reports coming in but they are worth looking at and should see some steelhead and egging opportunities.
Lastly Jason has a saltwater update and again the news is positive. Good numbers of winter chinook are being hooked. See his update at the end of the report.

SPECIAL FEATURE
The Warm Water Dark Side Two years ago I did a little article on warm water travel spinning rods. It was fun and had a ton of response from our readers. We looked at how to hijack your standard family vacation with a travel spinning rod so you can spend mornings walking the beaches.
In this 2018 update we are going to look at all the gear you might need to highjack the family beach vacation but not only that, I am going to also recommend that you look at a similar spinning rod setup if you are doing a warm water fly fishing trip. This may raise a few eyebrows and I have had a number of purists fly fisherman feel that a spinning rod is cheating. I will leave this debate up to you but I will say I love fly fishing and for the most part I will choose fly fishing over gear fishing. I have been on a number of trips where the conditions, location or simply the timing made fly fishing a futile exercise. These were the times that I was very happy to have packed a spinning rod.
This year we have expanded our warm water gear section with the addition of the Savage Gear line up of top water baits. These poppers and pencil poppers are perfect if you are traveling to Mexico, the Caribbean or South Pacific.
We have a great selection of poppers skip baits and diving lures in stock.
Rods If you are a conventional gear angler on the family vacation or a fly fisherman who wants to join me on the dark side what do you need? Depending on your location there are a couple things you want to look for in a 3-4 piece rod. If you love hanging out on beaches a longer surf rod is the way to go.
Matt with a barracuda that he caught while fly fishing for permit – nice break from the long hours of looking for permit
We carry the Rapala 9’6 Baja. It is great, comes with a tube and is relatively cost effective. Now the only down side to this rod is that it is a little long for boat fishing and a little clunky for shallow water flats fishing.
If you want an all round rod that can fish the beach, boat or flats, the shorter Rapala 7’6 Baja Rod is one of our most popular choices.
Now if you are going specifically for flats fishing, a nicer high-end rod that has a number of weight options to match fish species is ideal. My favourite is the TFO Signature Series Travel rods and they come in bonefish to tarpon size line ratings. They are 3-piece, have an awesome warranty and cast as nice as a 2-piece rod.
Last but not least, as an honourable mention for travel rods, we have the Ugly stick 3-piece. It’s ugly, very cost effective and though it is not a great casting tool, when it comes to trips where the spinning rod is an afterthought, it is nice not to care too much about the gear. The Ugly Stick is bomb proof and at a price where you can give it to a young angler on the beach after you are done. It is $69.99.
If you will be targeting the really big warm water species, think sailfish, tuna, giant trevally and mature tarpon you can absolutely do it with the rods I have listed above. That said we can’t make any promises you won’t come home with a great fishing story and a 4-piece rod that has magically turned into an 8-piece rod. I am doing a trip to Christmas Island again in a few months and off shore GTs are going to be in the mix. If you are looking for a rod to specifically target big species I have experience with a number of higher end rods and we can order them in for you. Both Diawa and Okuma make some excellent options. Come down to the shop and talk to me. I will need a little lead time but I can get the perfect rod for your trip.
The Rapala Baja Travel rod paired with a Penn Spin Fisher.
Reels Now you will need a reel to go along with you rod. If you are doing a casual trip using any medium to large size spinning reel that you have from salmon fishing will work. I recommend coming down and having us spool it with braid to get more capacity and stronger line but you will be in the game.
If you want to be a little more dedicated or are doing a fly fishing trip where the reel will be out in the saltwater elements all day long, investing in a saltwater safe reel is important. The best cost effective spinning reel in this class is the Penn Fierce.
Its bigger brother is the Penn Battle. I own two of these reels and love them. They have been around the world with me and are tough. For anyone planning on doing this a fair amount the battle offers improved saltwater durability and is fully recommended.
Last year we stepped up in the saltwater reel department. We started offering 3 very heavy duty reels. The Daiwa BG, the Diawa Saltist and the Penn Spin Fisher. We have been fishing and selling them for over a year now and though they are more expensive than the above reels they have stood up exceptionally well and if you are going to be doing a fair amount of this style of fishing we recommend you look at them.
Tackle With reels and rods covered you need to think about tackle. There is a huge selection but for me I like to keep things streamlined. I pick up a medium size flambeau box that I can tuck into my sling pack and I load it with 4 different styles of lures.
Our standard warm water lure kit.
I always have a bait setup that I can cast out, lean back with a beer in a lawn chair and see what come down the beach. I take 2-4, 3-6 oz dollar weights, a pack of swivels, a bead and 2 sizes of saltwater hooks. One small # 4 hook and one large 3/0 hook. I usually then hit up a local restaurant for squid or shrimp and the set up is ready.
The second lure I bring and easily my favourite is top water popper fishing. These work almost anywhere for barracuda, jacks and a ton of other species. Cast out and make as much commotion on the water as fast as you can is usually the best method. We have a great selection in the shop.
Now I like to fish popper style lures but pencil style lures are also always in my box. These lures don’t catch water like the popper but skip over the water like a bait fish jumping away from danger. These style of skip baits are actually way less of a work out to fish because they don’t catch as much water. In areas of heavy surf or if I know that I am going to be casting for an extended period of time I prefer this style of lure. You will be shocked at how tired your arms get when working a big popper for even a half hour.
The last thing you will want is sub surface style lures and some jig style lures for fishing deeper areas off the beach, deep holes on the flats of just off shore. We also have a great selection of diving lures, jigs and soft plastic jigs. Finally I always include wire leaders in my kit. You might have to use them on all of the set ups if there are toothy critters around.
A 50lb barracuda caught on one of our fly fishing trips to Cuba on a popper – You’re a hero Gord!

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORTS
Chilliwack River Fishing Report With the warm weather and the rain, the water level rose on the Vedder River this week. Usually, when the river is at this height and coming down fishing is very good. However, with the unstable clay banks the clarity isn’t at its best. With the continuous rain and snowmelt combined with the warmer temperature, we expect the coloured water to continue this week. Murky condition are not the end of the world. We have heard of a fish being caught but it does make things more challenging. Try to use bait such as shrimp or roe, or just simply add scent to your lure or fly. Also, use bigger presentations and brighter colours. This method just makes it easier for the fish to see and smell your presentation. If the water clears up downsize your presentation using smaller lures, flies, plastics, hooks and leaders. So if you are heading out make sure you bring your larger pink worms, large gooey bobs and cut your roe into larger than normal chunks.
If you are fly fishing for steelhead on the Vedder or anywhere else for that matter, don’t miss out on our latest video in our Learn How with Pacific Angler series where you can take a look into What’s in Matt’s steelhead box.
Good luck out there and stop by the shop and send us any pictures if you get lucky!

Capilano River Fishing Update The water level at the Cap fluctuated over the last week with the rain and water being released from the dam. With the bumps of water we did hear about a confirmed winter run being caught, a couple guys hooked stale coho and we also heard a report of a kelted summer run being hooked. The weather is starting to warm up a bit which will also cause the fish to be more active. There are still some salmon left in the river however you probably do not want to target these late fish. If you do hook a steelhead, if it is very skinny and or red, it is probably a summer run. In an ideal world you will leave these fish alone and though you should be as careful as possible with all steelhead be sure to be extra gentle if you hook a summer run. For the overview of the Cap fishery in 2018 check below:
Overview of the Capilano Season The first steelhead start trickling in around the end of December. We do not see many steelhead on the Capilano but it is a fishery worth looking at it you do not have time to travel farther. They can be targeted with spoons, spinners, flies, or drifting colorado blades, jigs, shrimp, roe and plastic worms but the most popular method for the high banked deep pools on the Capilano is with a gear rod and a float. Come talk to us and we will show you the right setups. Steelhead are expected to be in the system until mid-March.
After the steelhead fishery, around may we will see early Capilano coho come in. It’s a smaller run and the fish aren’t that big. However, they are known as one of the best-tasting coho. These fish usually shoot straight up as the water from the dam is released quite often. The best way to catch them is swinging cap buggers at the cable pool. You can also target the moving fish with spoons, spinners, or drifting with roe.
After the early coho season, the fall salmon season is upon us. Only a small amount of fish trickle in when the water is low. Most of the fish will stack at the mouth of the river and wait for the river to rise up. Once the water goes up, the river is filled with salmon. You can catch these salmon by casting lures, swinging flies, twitching jigs or drifting. Remember the bait ban comes into effect from August 1st until October 31st.
There is the overview of the 2018 season. Hopefully, everyone had an amazing year. Even if you didn’t let’s start thinking about what can be done better next year for a successful season.
Come in the shop and our knowledgeable staff will help you gear up for all the upcoming fishery.
Squamish River Fishing Report Since last week’s report, the Squamish bumped up a bit, providing some much needed colour to the water and helped cycle fish and freshen them up. Some of the productive spots that were fishing well last week changed. Instead of being in the “spot” we found fish just above or below areas that had been good last week. This commonly happens when we get a little bump in the water. With water levels and river colour increasing, the swung fly was quite productive for us this week. At this time of year, I usually carry two rods- one for swinging, and one for egging. This allows me to fish every piece of water effectively depending on how it is set up.
As for flies, I carry a variety of sculpin and standard streamer style patterns in browns, greys, olives, and whites. One of my favourite flies currently is the C3, an articulated, balanced streamer I came up with last season that has become my go-to. Though I will fish a variety of flies, the C3 has consistently been one of my top producers for bulltrout, rainbows, and even coho when tied in appropriate colours. Come down to the shop and I’ll show it to you, and which materials are needed to tie it.
Jordan’s C3 balanced streamer pattern.
When swinging, I like to use a 4wt switch or 5wt Spey. Though not necessary (I caught a fair amount of fish before I had these rods) I do find I can cast farther easier, allowing me to cover more water effectively. Regardless of the rod used for swinging, carrying a selection of sink-tips or versi-leaders can pay dividends. I have fished runs effectively finding fish using T-11, working my way down stream, only to re-visit the spot near the end of the day and having to switch to T-8 because of the dropping water. In the single-hand world, the same can be said with Type-VI and having to go to a Type-III, or vice-versa and you have to increase your sink rate. Keep in mind, sink rate does not indicate how far it sinks, but rather how fast it sinks. This is important when trying to time your swing or drift through a bucket, riffle, run, or pocket- or when trying to effectively fish a piece of structure from where you are positioned.
Jordan With a nice fish caught on a C3 streamer.
With cooler temperatures mixed with clear skies, we can expect the water to start dropping again and clearing up. Keep in mind that clear water can be deceiving, and to wade safely: what might appear to be shallow, can actually be deep.
Though I focused this report on swinging flies we did use beads quite a bit when I was out last and it put a number of nice fish to the bank. Sean was out and focused a bunch on the bead rig. He hooked a number of really nice fish.
Sean With a nice egg caught bull from this week
And remember, if you come across some loose change, don’t be surprised- fish keep their money in the river bank.
Jordan Simpson
Stave River Fishing Report My fishing time has been limited in the last two weeks but I did manage to sneak a peek at the Stave earlier this week. Water levels have been fluctuating between moderate to low flow and have been gin clear from what I’ve seen, making finesse fishing somewhat crucial. The trout and whitefish fishing can be hit or miss; maybe not a day’s worth of fishing but definitely worth a look for a few hours if you are in the area. If they are there you will get them. Targeting trout and whitefish with egg patterns is the typical go-to right now although small streamers and spinners/spoons can also get them when they aren’t clued in on the eggs. Historically this is also when the Steelhead start showing up in this system; there aren’t a lot compared to the Vedder or Chehalis but factoring in that it is a short river it is very possible that you can put your hook over at least a couple of them. Presentation wise there aren’t any secrets; your roe, shrimp, pink worms, spoons, and streamers will all produce. We didn’t catch any steelhead when we were out but it usually takes a few trips to get luck this time of year. This is a fun fishery with a multiple species and to reiterate, it’s a short river so I wouldn’t purposely make a trip there if you are not local. However if you are in the area or are coming back from the Vedder/Chehalis and have a couple hours to spare then definitely take a look.
For an overview of the Seasons on the Stave click here to see what it coming in 2018.
Alex Au-Yeung
Overview of the Stave River Fishing Season During the winter months on the Stave beading/egging for trout and whitefish is a great fishery. There are good numbers of trout and whitefish in the system as they are gorging on eggs. If you drift with Jensen eggs, beads or egg-shaped wool in riffles behind spawning salmon, you can get these fish.
Steelhead are also trickling into the system in late December. From Late December on you will be able to catch them by drifting with steelhead rigs such as plastic worm, gooey bob, corkies, colorado blades or spin-n-glos. You can also use roe or shrimp. Fly fishing is also a viable option; try steelhead patterns in different colours.
The egg fishing trout fishery will last until mid February and steelhead will be in the system from now until May.
At the end of the steelhead season, we will see another trout fishery in the stave river. Fly fishing with fry pattern or tossing little spoons or spinners will attract the trout that are in the system to feed on the salmon fry. This fishery goes from March to May. The river usually gets high in May and though there are still resident fish in the system all summer it is not a go to destination until fall.
Early September marks the start of the salmon fishery. Once the chum salmon start coming in you can expect to hook them left and right because there are so many. Drift with jigs and if they don’t bite, play with your depth a little bit. Coho salmon will show up as well and they can be targeted with flies, spoons, or spinners. Look for frog water or structures when looking for coho as they like slow moving water.
That sums up the 2018 overview of the Stave River. If you wish to try any of the fisheries mentioned above, come to the shop and we will be glad to help.
SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS
Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Fishing continues to be solid and if you can find a day where the winds and rain aren’t too bad, even better! Looking ahead to this weekend it looks like some rain on Saturday but on Sunday the sun is going to make an appearance. As for the winds, the SE in the Strait of Georgia looks like it will be moderate but the outflow out of Howe Sound is being persistent, but not at the levels we saw earlier this month.
There are fish well spread out through Howe Sound and good numbers in the Gulf Island as well, so there really is no one hot spot. All spots are producing fish and the name of the game is being in the right place at the right time and perhaps taking into consideration the fishability of a spot when it comes to the wind. Too much wind makes for difficult boat handling which in turn makes it that much harder to control speed and stay in the zone.
The usual tactics of glow flashers with glow spoons or hootchies, fished close to the bottom, is producing fish. In last weeks report I featured some of the productive spoons we have been fishing and there hasn’t been much change there. Check out this past report for some detailed information on more productive spoons we use this time of year and some detailed information on flashers as well. Make sure you follow us on Instagram and Facebook too. In 2018 we will be posting more photos and interim reports. This weekend I am going to share some photos and videos on the work we have been doing on Salty Dawg the past few days. Next best thing to fishing for me is working on the boats. I love getting them dialled in for the winter and the upcoming summer season!
Crabbing and prawning have been decent this past week, not red hot, but worth dropping the traps if you want some of these tasty critters. Keep in mind it is a trade off though. The days are short so when you drop traps it takes up a fair chunk of time and that makes it more difficult to chase down the chinook. Looking forward to when the days are just a little bit longer.
See you in the shop or on the water,
Jason Tonelli

School and org life has been keeping me so busy I’ve barely had time to attend to Tumblr at all. But lately I’ve gained a new set of friends, started to do errands on my own, and now handle my anxiety particularly better in some situations, so I guess being busy is a good thing...right? Anyway that’s enough talking, on to the survey.
Have you ever ate at restaurant and you realized you forgot your money? Hahaha no.   When someone breaks something of yours do you expect them to buy it back? If it’s something expensive then yes. Otherwise I just suck it up and deal with it, but forever remembering that person who broke a thing of mine. What was the last video game you played? I have no clue. GTA V? Do your parents deliberately do things to embarrass you? Sometimes I think they do that.
True or false-you can pat your head and rub your tummy at the same time. Confirmed. Been doing it since I was 7.
Do you prefer to drink out of cans or bottles? Glasses. Do your socks match today? I haven’t worn socks today. What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it? I read snippets from AJ’s autobio Crazy is My Superpower, since there was a copy at the local bookstore but was too broke for it. Recommending it, of course. She’s always been my inspiration and that book was the rawest she’s ever allowed herself to be for us.   Are you currently borrowing something from someone? Nope. Write an extremely random statement. I have four midterms coming up this week. What do you wish you had more time to do? Rest, duh. Are there any major holidays you don't celebrate? Yep. Easter, Thanksgiving, any of your American holidays. My family celebrates Christmas but I’m not into it. What is one thing you will never understand? Calculus. Have you ever stepped on a bee? No, I saw a big dead bee on the floor when I was at the College of Architecture last Tuesday though :/// What helps you wake up in the morning? Knowing I get to hang out with org people. Are your parents still married? Yes, they have been for the past 20 years. What did you have for breakfast this morning? My mom made me fried rice with egg and a hotdog, but I was too sad to eat so I gave it to my dog. I had a few spoonsful, but technically I didn’t have any breakfast. What is your favorite thing in your room? My fuzzy blanket. Who is your newest friend? All of the org people are my newest friends. :) How do you act when you are nervous? Depends on who I’m with and how much I’m nervous. I can handle it sometimes, especially if I’m with people I’m not close to. But I will be visibly frazzled when I’m with, say, Angela or Gab. Name a talent you wish you had. Playing the piano. Who was your first kiss with? Gabie. If you have a tumblr, post your link: Errrr here hahaha. Do you know anyone who looks different in person than in their pictures? Yeah SO MANY PEOPLE. Best example would be this girl in my art studies class who looks exactly like Gabie. Now I’ve wanted to show her the girl’s Facebook photos for a long time just to prove that she has a doppelgänger in the campus, but whenever I try to look at her profile, she looks nothing like Gab. It was so annoying cause then Gab wasn’t convinced at all cause I absolutely refused to show the photos, since the girl looked so different in all of them hahaha.   Do you get worried about small things? Getting worried about small things is my middle name. Do you laugh at things that aren't supposed to be funny? No. Sometimes I find myself ridiculing Christianity though just because I came from a Catholic school who shoved it down my throat. Ever accidentally walked out of a store without paying for something? Yes. The security thing at the doors that beep when you shoplift didn’t recognize that I was carrying a box of crayons, but eventually I realized I had still been holding it so I went back and paid. What food would you rather starve than eat? Fruit salad. When you go to restaurants, how much do you give as a tip? We don’t tip in the Philippines. Service charge is usually regarded as sufficient. Do you still watch The Simpsons? No. Do you eat breakfast every morning? Hah, nope. Name your favourite band that begins with the letter "A". Against Me!!!!! Tell me something about yourself that you don't normally tell people. I love risotto? If you could mix any two animals, which would they be? Just a dog and a dog to make another dog plz. Have you ever egged someones house? No. Why is that even a thing? Do you find it annoying when people text during movies? I suppose it’s fine, but it turns into a problem if they have their brightness on very high. Are you more artistic or athletic? I’m neither, but since I did track and do table tennis, I can be considered the latter. How many pieces of pizza do you usually eat? Depends how big the slice is. 4-5 in one sitting, on average. You procrastinating anything right now? No. I was studying, but taking a short break right now. Will study again after finishing this survey. Do you like it or hate it when people sing happy birthday to you? HATE IT. Greeting me is fine, but singing to me is just the worst. What colour was the last beverage you drank? Clear. Does your bedroom have a theme? Nope. Do you have any dirty dishes in your room? Nice try. Cleaned them already. What messages do you think your dreams are trying to tell you? I dunno. I don’t give meanings to my dreams. What's the strangest compliment you've ever received? I don’t think there have been any that fall under weird. What colour do you wear the most? Blaaaaack, definitely. Would you sacrifice your dreams, to help someone else reach theirs? No. But knowing how I am for loved ones, I would honestly probably do it for Gab. If you could meet anyone who lived before your time, who would it be? All my great-grandparents. And all my ancestors before them. Yeah I cheated on this question so what. What age did you stop believe in Santa? 5. Do you believe that a smile really can brighten up someone's day? Absolutely. One thing you promised yourself you'd never do and then did? Join a university org. HAHAHAHAHAHA freshman Robyn is seething.
