Follow up to the last post about the beauty in the multiple routes storytelling: This is more about the house leaders and retainers than the recruitables, but another thing that I love about it is how the characters can get both canonical good and bad endings.
Whenever a famous show ends there’s a lot of complaining about both good and bad endings and arguing for the virtues of both, and I think that alone shows that both have their merits and that part of what makes a story or characters compelling is having the capacity for both: Happy stories are satisfying because you see all the things that weigh them down and wish to see them triumph anyway especially if you emphasize with their struggles, and tragedies are supposed to make you wonder what they could have done different, and to cry for the potential for good that was there. Both seeing the characters be happy, and seeing the drama play out to its full, dark explosive conclusion give you different kinds of catharsis.
There’s a sort of... completeness in seeing how they act like when they win or lose. Or something in between, as Edelgard and Claude can be said to score partial wins in some of the routes.
Claude wants peaceful foreign relations and to keep the Alliance from being destroyed - he gets that in Azure Moon and Crimson Flower. (he can die in the last one, but if he lives it’s arguably a complete victory) Edelgard wants Rhea and the Agarthans neutralized - that happens in Silver Snow and Verdant Wind, it even happens in part because of the intel she and Hubert have collected, though they perish in the process - but it’s precisely because they’re willing to do that and sacrifice their all that it’s so satisfying to “finally” let them survive it in CF and make it so they don’t have to give it all.
Of course in Dimitri’s case seeing that he is so doomed and always dies so miserably and tragically makes it all the more satisfying when you get to save him for once and make it so all the goodness in his heart doesnt go to waste.
Likewise, Claude handling himself so well in the other routes adds a lot to his appeal, in fact it was my CF playthrough that really made me like him, in part because his heroism comes out of nowhere if you havent played VW. I found it just as jarring as Dimitri turning up as this grizzled avenger rly, young Claude is a goofy gremlin if you only know him from afar, older Claude is this skilled politician and an absolute hero.
When they lose it’s distinctly a logical results of their consistent shortcommings:
Claude either has a risky gamble blow up in his face and cost him everything (SS if you assume he’s dead, CF if you kill him) or plays too defensively and ends up bailing (if he lives) because of his cynism and not really thinking he can win, and because the alliance was only ever a sidegig/ means to an end for him, and no one trusts him because they don’t know his deal (the gronder fiasco in AM and Edelgard’s preemptive strike in CF)
Dimitri is done in by his exaggerated sense of obligation (”The Dead must have their tribute!”) but also his myopic overfocus on the present and his immediate emotions (he’s doesn’t consider if he can win or that he’s dragging the whole Kingdom down with him into his kamikaze stunt, never gets rid of his black and white thinking, which keeps him from trying to compromise but also makes him see himself as irredeemable)
Edelgard squandered her credibility and antagonized even potential allies with her shady alliance and uncompromising methods, no one believes her, everyone assumes she’s evil and bands together to get her, she ends up fighting everyone at once which is impossible even if you're the strongest person with the biggest army.  Since she wants to avoid being helpless at all cost and has basically given up on a normal life outside of The Cause, she chooses to go down fighting to avoid capture, even when Dimitri and Claude both offer quarter.
But when they win, you really see their soft humanity come to light in beautiful ways, all the stuff that goes to waste and never gets a chance if they lose:
When Dimitri actually considers what he wants to do rather than what he feels obliged to do, all he actually wants to make peace with everyone and help the poor and downtrodden [Mural where he plays with little orphans]
Claude’s secret ambition is something as benign as world peace. Once he becomes less cynical he proves to be a dreamy, contemplative romantic underneath, all poetic and philosophical [Mural of a peace treaty being signed between multiple nations]
Edelgard is atually extremely altruistic, never wanted power for its own sake and actually always wished for an ordinary life. Once society is suitably unfucked she pulls a Cincinnatus. [Mural with rejoicing liberated peasants]

I was looking forward to my Blue Lions route but I just finished Dedue’s paralogue and read your rant abt the garbage lgbt+ representation and white saviour complex and I am honestly starting to wonder if it’s even worth completing this run if thisvis what I have to look forward to after Verdant Wind? Is there any redeeming qualities to Azure Moon?
i’ve actually played blue lions and in my honest opinion? god no kdsjah in fact i say just dont play 3h in general KGVHJDSK
also dont take my discussion on how theyre not canonically lgbt as how the route goes, most of what i discussed in that post was pre-time skip stuff. so here’s my opinion on blue lions in a not-so short opinion but i dont remember much of it other than like some main plot points.
heavy spoilers ahead
congrats for doing dedue’s paralogue, because if you dont he actually dies! and its the worst because he dies for dimitri :) off screen :)
its implied he’s dead because he got dimitri out of prison (being held captive by cornelia) and you don’t have him in your party for a good chunk of the time skip. if you did the paralogue, he lives, you dont, he’s dead.
i havent played 3h in so long and like nothing from it really stuck to me but what i remember from azure moon is that they very poorly handled Dimitri’s mental health, he doesnt get the help he needs like at all. theres a bit where for like 3-5 chapters, which is insanely long for this game with the calendar, dimitri cant do anything. he cant take lessons, he cant do supports, you cant talk to him at all. because all he wants is edelgard’s head. his murder craze forces him to point the army is the most inefficient path to the empire so he can fight edelgard to the death. and by the time he snaps out of it, have fun retracing your steps and having to start over!
and the only thing that snaps him out of this murder craze is when the three armies face off at gronder field, Fleche (randolf’s sister and caspar’s aunt) appears and attempts to kill dimitri as atonement for randolf’s death. Rodrigue steps between them and dies as a result! and the BEST part about rodrigue’s pretty pointless death is that felix doesnt even get to grieve. theres no focus on him having to deal with the death of his brother and now his father. maybe there was a one-off line about it in the monastery but he pretty much goes “my fathers dead, yes its sad, but we need to keep moving, just dont fucking think or talk about it”
and by the end of the route, NOTHING CHANGES!!! claude fucks off back to almyra (good for him! i wouldnt want to be in fodlan anymore either!), dimitri becomes king, the church is not dismantled, byleth becomes the archbishop, and nothing about society has changed. the crest system is still in place, nobles are still majority crest bearers, etc. i dont think you even really deal with TWSitD like you do in verdant wind
(and you have to deal with gilbert and no one wants that lol)
spoilers are over
tl;dr, azure moon has a very unsatisfying end. you dont feel like you helped anyone. theres no result of edelgard’s attempt at changing the system. the church still sucks.
blue lions is way too played up for such a lackluster and disappointing route

Thoughts on Cindered Shadows (Spoilers!)
Despite reading all I could about it before it was released like the datamines and fan theories I was still surprised about how things played out and the personalities of the Ashen Wolves. They are somehow even more likeable then I expected.
I was not expecting to learn about Byleths mom Sitri or deal with a character so distraught by her death that he formulated a plan that involved using the Ashen Wolves to resurrect her! [Meanwhile Jeralt is completely unaware of all of this...]
I was really happy to see the three house leaders working together. Especially Dimitri and Claude since Dimitri is my fav and Claude is my second fav FE character. I feel like if this was canon for all the routes it would have effected how the stories of each of the routes ended...I dont think its completely canon or at least it isnt directly part of any route and it's own thing with canon info. For starters Byleth has a C support with all the house leaders, that's not possible to have in any of the routes. I know the creators said in an interview there wouldn't be a golden route so I guess this is as close as it gets. I get it the whole point is to pick a side, there are many different paths just like in life. I'm just a sucker for happy endings and I see a lot of things getting resolved if the house leaders just spoke more to eachother... I mean again life is like that too we'd probably all get along better if we took the time to talk, listen and empathize. With that being said....
I got really excited when I saw Dimitri and Edelgard talking during the exploration. Agh I just wished they had said more...
The cutscenes were enjoyable Claude and the Ashen wolves were hilarious, also Ashe (3rd fav) and Dimtri were awesome as usual. I like how they're both so polite. Im surprised how well I know them when I thought oh they're probably going to say something they did. However I wasnt expecting Dimitri to comment on how even he couldn't get the gate to open in that one chapter. I actually said out loud not even you!? I kind of find that hard to believe considering he can break swords( idk maybe that's not comparable.)
Speaking of dialogue why the hell do some people think Dimitri admiring the abyss is a bad thing? Or cutting off Claude who was being rude? ( yeah sure claude makes a bit of valid point but they're doing their best.) It's nice for people to have somewhere to go when they have no where else it's not ideal but its something. Dimitri's all about helping the less fortunate plus I feel like it would've made sense if he ended up there during the timeskip considering he's a fugitive. It is canon at least in Azure moon that he lived in the slums ( as he says in one of his advice box questions) so I think this place would be a step up.
Oh yeah and it was so weird how Claude said that his name is a common fake name because on that same day I watched Modern Family and Phil gave himself a fake name and it was claude.
On a somewhat related note the abyss reminds me of where Levi in attack on titan no regrets lived.
Anyways it was fun to play and hard. I started out on hard but I really just wanted to know more of the story so I switched to normal. I relied way too much on Dimitri he was just really good at one shotting things and ended up being way higher leveled than everyone else by the end of the game lol. Overall very fun it took me 10 hours to finish just like they said it would. I cant wait to unlock the shadow library. I've played through all the routes and I'm doing my second run of the blue lions route on hard but havent reached the timeskip yet which is when I can unlock that library of secrets. I'm just as excited Claude and Linhardt to read the books in there. I'm trying not to spoil myself on tumblr about what's in there I already did a little bit though.

i luckily havent seen anyone call edeleth problematic from my experiences but even without all the Angst/Drama, just the fact that byleth is the one who changes edelgard the Most is what gets to me
correct me if im wrong because of course i havent played the other routes, but from what ive seen/heard, regardless of which house you pick, dimitri is still a bit Off The Chain and Hurting and Claude is still the Chill Guy
However, (SPOILERS), depending on which house you pick, edelgard’s character is the only one who seems to change DRASTICALLY to do an almost 180. if you pick BL, she completely loses control and is used as a puppet (presumably against her own will) for someone else’s motives. If you pick GD, she is portrayed as more tragic, but still dies at the hands of byleth. If you pick BE but side with the church, she still seems to withhold a semblance of her usual Edelgard Self, but definitely not enough to keep herself Stable on her own. If you pick BE and go with her, though, she changes so much. Not only do we witness her empathetic side first hand, but we see that she is noticeably more relaxed and stable. we see her dorkier side and her more emotional sides. and lastly, we see that byleth clearly acts as her anchor or grounding force based on this routes comparison to other renditions of edelgard. Personally, i think this version of her in BE when you go with her is the closest to what edelgard is really like and i think her ending up with byleth is very Natural and has a lot of depth from the perspective of that rute

wait. you play 3houses? i have a memory of you criticizing it awhile back (around when it was first released) bc it allowed a relationship between a teacher and student (even though technically it’s finalized after the war) and more recently you complained about how claude and dimitri are strictly straight lmao. i guess there’s a possibility im remembering things wrong but i was under the impression that you hated the game and wouldn’t support it lol so do you actually like it?
lol yea its under my interests, i criticized it some time ago when it first was announced bc of the weird shit in it + recently criticized it for the whole gay supports thing because it was, quite frankly, both mildly upsetting and EXTREMELY hilarious, but yeah! picked it up for myself & ive been playing it the past few days, just didn’t post about it on my main blog because i know a lot of my mutuals/followers (fairly!) disliked fe & i didn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable or anything (part of why i remade, its just easier to post about things on a new fresh blog where everythings tagged and give the option to people to simply not follow rather than me randomly starting to post about it and catching ppl offguard if that makes sense?)
if im being completely honest i just really wanted to play it for myself instead of going off on what everyone else said about it. i kind of formed my opinion on it based on the general opinion of the site which is people who havent played it and i was like. shit. maybe i should try this out for myself? and i dont hate it tbh!
of course you know. the mentioned weird aspects are still like, bad, but they’re completely avoidable in-game and have no impact on the story at all, so it’s not AS bad as it seems (don’t get me wrong, still odd that they’re there. though the game does its hardest to get rid of anything that makes byleth/most of the characters as weird as it can be, ex. byleth being around the same age range as (most) of the characters, being treated extremely casually, only teaching like... battle stuff and not like. actual education, so the imbalance doesn’t seem there or at the very least it’s not as strong as people are thinking when they talk abt it w/o knowing, + the big fact that you can’t even get anywhere close to romantic with the characters until after the war, but again, still odd. there r other weird supports besides the house characters too but those r more blatantly weird. anyway i digress, i don’t really touch the bylethshipping side of 3h i played a year later so i could avoid any fanbase drama im just here to kiss dimitri)
so no, tldr youre not remembering wrong at all! i did hate it or at least dislike it but that was before i like, tried it out myself and formed my own opinion on it. im critical of it but overall i think (so far! ive only played one route to the finish lol) it’s a fine game on it’s own and falls under “the weird aspects of this can be completely avoided without affecting the main story in the slightest” category when it comes to media with a bad rep
