roman: princy or princess?
ok i know the title sounds like crack, but hear me out:
Romanā€™s whole deal is being a prince. Hes got the costume, he plays up the gimmick, he even has a fricking sword. We know this, weā€™ve seen the ups and downs of this in the series, and we know the black and white, prince vs evil mentality is about to explode in everyoneā€™s face (more so than it already has, that is) because who everyone expects/wants him to be doesnt line up with his real self, and heā€™s still not at the point of truly accepting himself for who he isnt (a cookie cutter, perfect prince) and is (a mess) (via @beauty-and-passion bc i love their analyses so fricking much), but weā€™ll come back to that
Romanā€™s primary inspiration (via c! thomasā€™ perception) is disney princes, so lets take a look at their usual jobs in the films.
Vanquish evilĀ
Advocate true love
simple enough, right? just like roman, at first it seems that way. Im sure at the beginning of sanders sides we all thought he would be a showy, pretty boy prince who wanted thomas to be ā€˜goodā€™. Because princes always get rid of the evil in the end, right?
but we know how thats worked out for roman. Mean to virgil, backfired awfully. Condemned janus, everyoneā€™s against roman now. Separate from remus, it came back to bite thomas. And it was fine, roman would have put up with anything so long as it only hurt him, but because thomas got hurt everything is worse. (of course, this is the case with janus too, but iā€™ll come back to that)
everyone knows by now that thereā€™s going to be a reckoning next episode. Weā€™ve seen thomas costumed as remus, so heā€™s gonna be in there. Roman had a breakdown last ep, backed into a corner and a confrontation, so if he isnt there when his twin is i am going to riot. Janus is definitely going to be there bc the last ep saw jan fINALLY being accepted (also a part of that confrontation), and iā€™m just dying to know where virgil has been as well so he might also show up. The whole gangā€™s gonna see what chaos goes down if patton even sneezes in their general direction
where was i going with this, i had a point
RIGHT
So vanquish evil has failed every which way for roman. Whats left? True love. Now, in most films this refers to a princess, but i think romanā€™s focus always has been and always will be thomas. He was heartbroken when the whole ā€˜thomas was lying about roman being his heroā€™ (or at least roman interpreted janusā€™ nod that way), his whole theme is because thomas needed a prince to save him from the ā€˜bad thoughtsā€™ ie remus (which is irrelevant to my point so we dont have time to unpack all that rn- /ref)
But because he failed to vanquish evil the ā€˜rightā€™ way (even though literally everything patton ever said led him to believe he was doing the right thing-), heā€™s failed to show thomas the ā€˜true loveā€™, hence he is no longer thomasā€™ hero. No longer his prince.
whaBAM, entire basis of his identity no longer exists
So whatā€™s left?
disney is still there, its a core part of roman and no amount of anguish will lessen that it was a core part of c! thomasā€™ creative development
on that note, roman still has to be his core functions. creativity, passion, ego, hopes, dreams, etc
Thinking on it though, none of those ever fit neatly into theĀ prince persona in the first place. A prince is there to serve his ā€˜kingdomā€™ (ie the sides + thomas) and to complete the above values, not to be an artist or performer or any of the things thomas dreams of. And there is no room for passion or ego in the life of a prince because he is always looking out for his people (what shouldĀ be the othersā€™ job). Which begs the question: why was roman a prince in the first place?
The obvious answer goes back to disney being c!thomasā€™ first forays into storytelling. the princes were perfect examples of ā€˜goodnessā€™, which as we know is key to what thomas pre-the newer episodes wanted to be, and existing already in familiar stories with killer songs to match, it was an ideal match for a ā€˜goodā€™ creativity
But deeper than that, i think roman is a prince because thomas needed a placeholder to be his protector. He wasnt yet aware of janus (the metaphorical protector, saving thomas from what he wasnt yet ready for), lying to himself about the dark other sides altogether, and virgil was too busy playing the ā€˜bad guyā€™ at the beginning to show his true colors (looking out for thomas is virgilā€™s purpose, as we now know), but back then? Roman was the one barricading virgil the most,Ā ā€˜protectingā€™ thomas from his influence
Therefore! The reason roman was the prince was to ā€˜saveā€™ thomas from the others, and unconsciously, the ā€˜dark creativityā€™. Without the ā€˜prince,ā€™ thomas would have accepted the darkness all to easily (from romanā€™s perspective, which once again goes into the subconscious protecting from remusā€™ stuff)
But, returning to the point (i keep getting off track lol), now the prince is gone. Heā€™s failed in his pursuits, there is nothing else to protect from (ignoring orange), he isnt thomasā€™ hero
I think, bear with me, heā€™s going to become more of a princess now.
āœØmetaphoricallyāœØ
Princes, in the typical disney movie, are black and white. Theyre either good (eric, phillip, etc) or bad (see hans). Fight evil, get the girl love interest, live happily ever after, orā€¦ dont.
Living happily ever after by fighting evil has gotten roman absolutely nowhere; in fact, it got him ostracized and rethinking his entire self concept, so thats not an option now.
princesses, on the other hand, have gone through a fricking renaissance. Where they used to be as black and white as princes minus the possibly-evil bit and delicate as flowers, now they can be hard-working, law-breaking, dream-chasing, yet still people-saving girlbosses, which is essentially roman on a can label.
im mixing my metaphors, but what roman really, truly needs right now is that metamorphosis. Heā€™s crumbling under the pressure his prince persona puts on him (ha, alliteration). Thomasā€™ moral dilemma is making his two creativities split at the seams even more than they already have, because if morality is such a spectrum, then why is his creativity so seemingly (forgive the overuse of this phrase) black and white?
If roman could shed the princeliness and take in more princess qualities (ie a certain disregard for the rules, doing whats right [for thomas, that is, which is being himself {a theme in many princess-centric films} despite expectations] by ignoring pre-set rules and expectations), heā€™d be so much healthier in the long run
Thats not to say he should be a princess aesthetically. Dude said himself- he is a manly man who is manly, but the free spirit so many disney princesses seem to envelop could better not only roman, but thomas
this way, roman doesnt *have* to be perfect to be ā€˜goodā€™ (something thomas still values, but in a different way now as we see in SvS redux). He can be his truest self (ego, passion, dreams and all) without contradicting who thomas sees roman as. He can go back to being his hero, if he wishes -- just in a new way
Because all the things that dont fit into being a prince fit perfectly into princesses (and he still gets to keep the innate disney-ness for the aesthetic)

Kodie Shane Has Gone From Braces To Golds In Her Quest To Make You Remember Her Name
Red Bull Media House
In the old days of rap ā€” think pre-streaming-era or anything before 2010 ā€” every new female rapper that came along had to be associated with a crew to gain any traction. They always had to be the ā€œFirst Lady Of [X]ā€; Lil Kim was the official female representative of Bad Boy, Foxy Brown was The Firmā€™s sole woman, Rah Digga was connected to Flipmode Squad, Remy Ma was Terror Squadā€™s little sister. The list goes on; Eve, Lauryn Hill, Shawnna, and more were known more by the rapper whoā€™d co-signed them than their own creative output in many cases. Even Nicki Minaj was presented as a member of the burgeoning Young Money crew when she made her debut in late 2000s.
19-year-old Kodie Shane ā€” born Kodie Williams ā€” entered the game in much the same way; discovered by then-teen Atlanta trap sensation Lil Yachty, Kodie was adopted as an official member of Yachtyā€™s Sailing Team collective. However, unlike many of her forebears, whose success was directly and inextricably linked to that of their respective crew/label, Kodie has kept largely to herself, eschewing the attention that would come from the association in favor of a hermetically-sealed, self-sufficient approach that is beginning to pay huge dividends, thanks to the continuing support and guidance of mentors like Yachty and Coach K of Quality Control Records, the Atlanta-based label thatā€™s home to talent like Yachty, Migos, and City Girls.
youtube
With that, sheā€™s begun to the grow the small-but-loyal cadre of supporters she cultivated while on tour with the Sailing Team into a rapidly-snowballing fan base hooked on the melodic trap formula she began developing even before working with Yachty. Now, sheā€™s proven to be even more adept at the style than Yachty himself; while Lil Boatā€™s Teenage Emotions debut received critical confusion, Kodie has only gained momentum from project to project, starting with the 2016 EP Zero Gravity, through to 2017ā€™s Back From The Future and Big Trouble Little Jupiter and culminating on her as-yet-untitled, upcoming Epic Records debut led by the singles ā€œLove & Drugz IIā€ featuring Trippie Redd and ā€œSing To Her,ā€ the video for which released in the first week of September.
Itā€™s that momentum that attracted Red Bull Music, who chose her to support Bay Area R&B star Kehlani at the brandā€™s Red Bull Sound Select showcase in Chicago, but it was Kodieā€™s magnetic energy and exuberant onstage persona that prompted Red Bull to approach her about shooting a mini-documentary covering her return to her hometown of Chicago to play the biggest show yet in her career. She jumped at the chance and Remember The Name was born.
youtube
The documentary, which released this past Monday, September 10, details Kodieā€™s intriguing rise from precocious, slightly insecure teen rapper who wanted to sing inspired by older sister Brandi (Williams, of 2000s R&B trio Blaque) but was too scared to, to fully-fledged, bold, and progressive artist with the help of loyal producer Matty P and her mom, who also manages her. Now, Kodie not only pushes boundaries musically, but sets an example ā€” along with a burgeoning group of artists that includes The Internetā€™s Syd, Troye Sivan, Hayley Kiyoko, and Kehlani herself ā€” for queer representation in music and especially in hip-hop.
With her debut album just over the horizon and her stardom all but assured, now would indeed be the perfect time to make sure that music fans remember her name. I recently had the chance to speak to Kodie about the new Red Bull doc, anticipating her debut album, and how she swapped out her braces for diamonds.
Have you watched Remember The Name? What were your thoughts?
Yes, and itā€™s my favorite thing ever, they didnā€™t miss a mark on it. Iā€™m so grateful that they captured the vision that we, they really captured the picture that we painted for them.
One of my favorite things from the documentary was seeing the old video of you rapping at fifteen and you had the braces and now youā€™re wearing the golds, so itā€™s like the glow-up is real.
Iā€™m wearing the diamond now!
Was there any apprehension going from the smaller sort of sets that you did before to doing the Riviera Theater supporting Kehlani?
Honestly, Iā€™m a performer, Iā€™m an entertainer, I love to perform, so it could be one person out there, it could be five hundred million people out there, Iā€™m going to always perform the same way. Iā€™m going to always perform like the room is full of people. Once I get the mic and I get on the stage Iā€™m not going to do it differently because itā€™s less people or because thereā€™s more people, Iā€™m going to rock out every night. Iā€™m a rockstar.
So, itā€™s obvious what you want people to take away from the documentary from its title, but whatā€™s something that you hope people learn about you more than anything else from the documentary?
I canā€™t say, ā€˜Iā€™ll teach you all of this, blah, blah, blah,ā€™ but I really just want people to see that Iā€™m a real person, Iā€™m vulnerable. I get in my way and Iā€™m really just like the person watching it.
youtube
With this new attention, what are some of the different concerns that you have to think about now that you didnā€™t think about before?
Itā€™s a lot of pressures: I pay bills, Iā€™m about to be twenty years old, so itā€™s a lot of different things in my life that stress me out or pressure me but I try push the pressure and the stress as far away from me. I try to just do what makes me happy every day I wake up, do whatever I got to do to be better. I donā€™t really let stress or pressure take me over, and sometimes itā€™s hard, I canā€™t lie, sometimes I can break down, but overall I donā€™t let it get to me.
Tell me about the ā€œSing To Herā€ video. Whatā€™d you do to those poor girls, why were they so mad at you?
Them ainā€™t my girls, man, I donā€™t know why they was mad. [Laughs] The vibe for that was honestly Missy Elliott, old-school. [I wanted to] create an in-studio video, keep it creative, [with] different scenes. The cereal, the fur jacket, that was Missy-Elliott inspired. We kind of just wanted to do something different.
What do those Fruit Colored Oā€™s cereal taste like?
They taste like ass. No cap.
youtube
I was really amused at the comment that Matty P made about how you were too shy about singing, that you wanted to rap because you felt like you couldnā€™t sing.
I just felt more comfortable rapping. When I was fifteen, sixteen, I felt like I wanted to be a rap artist. Right now in my life, I feel like I am just an artist, like one day I might end up painting, I might end up just doing poetry. Iā€™m an artist, so I donā€™t ever want to say, ā€˜I rap,ā€™ or ā€˜I sing.ā€™ I do it all. I donā€™t want to be in no box.
Something your mom said in the film that was very interesting was how she was talking about your placement in the hip-hop canon when it comes to women in rap and how femininity in rap is in this kind of weird place where it can be a benefit but it can be a disadvantage. How do you interact with the complexity of femininity in rap?
I donā€™t like to put labels on anything, honestly. Music is about music. One day people are going to grow up and theyā€™re going to get tired of the gimmicks of the yelling and screaming about running off on the plug and the gimmicks to get likes and people are going to be looking for real music and when that time comes, my music will be around for those people.
What can you tell me about this debut album you have coming up?
The album is going to be amazing. I really canā€™t wait for everyone to hear it, this music right here has taught me so much and Iā€™ve grown so much from just creating this music. This is me turning 20, this is me entering a new chapter in my life, this is me falling in and out of love with love itself. This is me just perfecting my craft. I feel like this is the music that I really, really, really, put my heart into. I worked so hard on it. This is the music that I grew up with. I just really hope that everybody can feel it. I canā€™t necessarily tell you what people should take from it, but what I can say is that I want the people to tell me what they took from it.
