MONSTER HIGH G3 IS NOT AS INCLUSIVE AS MONSTER HIGH G1

EDIT: THIS IS JUST A RANT, DON'T TAKE IT SO SERIOUSLY LOL

Maybe that sounds crazy. Maybe it's been said a million times. Anyway, I'm just ranting about my 3 am thoughts.

I know in G3 we have non-binary Frankie (who also has a prosthetic leg), and the Draculaura doll is more curvy. But as far as I'm concerned, they took everything else that made Monster High inclusive.

For starters, and I know it was never actually confirmed, but still, Clawdeen is lesbian (bisexual at best). Once again, it was never confirmed, but in my opinion is a theory popular enough for the Monster High management to hear about it.

If they really wanted to make it more inclusive, why did they not confirm Clawdeen sexuality and give her a female romantic interest?

No, they had to break up one of their best couples. This leads me to my next point, what the fuck are Cleo and Deuce doing being separated?

The first G1 dolls literally came as a package. If you got one, you got the other. That's how much of an obvious couple they were. And not only that, in the Boo York movie, they broke up for like five minutes before realizing they didn't want to be without each other.

Which, in my opinion, it's so fucking cute because they come from completely different worlds. Cleo is royalty, Deuce is just a normal guy. Cleo is a little too superficial, and Deuce looks like he never showers. But they love each other and that's enough.

And you know who else loved each other and that was enough? Clawd and Draculaura. What do you even mean with "Clawd likes Cleo"? That man was in love with Draculaura, that man would've done anything for her, and you're telling me they also broke them apart?

Especially since they made Draculaura curvy, it would've been beautiful to see them together. Because it would've been a great plot point to have jock, almost-bully Clawd evolve into falling in love with curvy, smart, witchy Draculaura. But no, they just separated them.

On a completely different note. What the fuck is Gil doing without his tank? Do I even have to explain why this is taking inclusivity out of the Monster High concept? He couldn't live without his tank outside the water. Ergo, he was limited without his tank. If you ask me, this is Monster High equivalent to something like hearing aids (and this is just an example, there are many other things you could compare Gil's tank to)

Also, Ghoulia talking bothers me a lot. First of all, she was the smartest of the group, but we couldn't understand what she was saying, which added a lot of comedy since us, the spectators, were only pretending to know what the fuck Ghoulia's plan was. And I repeat, she was the smartest of the group.

The smartest of the group couldn't communicate like everyone else. I won't even explain why that is fascinating in itself, because it just is and it added so much depth to whole story. And to add more to my problem with G3 Ghoulia, why is she standing straight and walking at a regular speed?

Ghoulia standing like a zombie was, again, to me, a form of inclusivity to all the kids out there who had some walking impediment, or, in general, had any chronic illness that stopped them from moving around. And her walking slow as fuck was just straight-up funny (especially that one web episode where she got a motorcycle).

There's a lot of things I do like about G3, as I think it improves the brand in wonderful ways, but they definitely took some of the most essential things that made Monster High what it was.

OUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH new monster high stuffssssssss

God Catty is so pretty I love her and she's literally gonna be a day one snag for me. Number 1. Best girl.

I ALMOST love core refresh Frankie, I love her design but the leak before they added all that magenta was soooooooo much better. Like pink can look great on Frankie but they literally splashed SUCH an intense pink. I do really like the doll tho, maybe I could reroot her and figure something out for the pink tank top...

Refresh Cleo is so cute!! Her original outfit was good but this kinda feels more... Glam? There's also just something I love about the look of that sheer belt thing over the skirt.

LAGOONA REFRESH YES FINALLY. I kinda wish her hair wasn't just blonde, but I can see how that might put things out of balance. She's so punky and cool looking! Lagoona is a girlie that I've wanted to like so bad because she's so cool in theory, but I never vibed with the outfits they put her in (aside from spa day but tbh that's because it was so simple). With this they're cooking so hard omg.

Monster Fest Frankie isn't quite my cup of tea, there's a LOT I love but the way they used the neons is a bit much for me.

Monster Fest Cleo is looking super good! I'm not sure I'll get her, this one doesn't stand out too much, but it's definitely a good Cleo.

Awwwe she's so cute!! I love the moons, the purple, the fluff! I haven't really found a g3 Clawdeen that speaks to me (Monster Ball came close) but I think she's gonna do it! Finally, I feel so bad having everyone but Clawdeen lol

Lagoona eating it up again! The prototype had some details I preferred (I swear the prototypes always have darker colors that get changed to pink or something) but those are so minor compared to the whole package here. I REALLY love this Lagoona!!!

Welcome Committee Frankie has had stock photos for longer than these others, but I felt bad for not liking either Frankie here and wanted to include her because I LOVE It. The more subtle use of the neons, AND the fact that there's pride colors mixed in? So great.

omg number one is definitely frankie! them being canonically nonbinary and sapphic is SO important to me as a nonbinary lesbian! they are also just silly and fun !!!<-- i also just relate to them a lot in general. i also really love cleo in this gen i think shes so funny, also twyla is super cute and canonically autistic which is fucking awesome!

5. Is there a line or idea for a line that you'd like to see in a G3 release?

ough this is a hard one!! i'd actually love to see more interactive stuff, like the ghoul's alive dolls or playsets like lagoona's hydration station or astranova's floating doll!!! OR THE CREATE A MONSTER DOLLS!!!!!! especially since this gen is doing more with the doll's body types, having a doll you could customize would be so so cool. even if it was a preexisting character doll that had like color changing hair or you could color on them or something!!

14. You have been given the chance to design the G3 version of one G1-introduced character. Who do you choose?

another hard one!! i would love to see cupid come back honestly!! sorry i just took like an hour to draw this:

i think g3 would be good to explore the fact that she was adopted by cupid and was born a bone elemental, and explore how her powers of love with the bow work!! she'd obviously still have her radio show, maybe it would be like a podcast/ she'd focus in music or something!! and it could be interesting if while shes invested in everyones love life, she could be aromantic or just not interested in something like that for herself!!

this design is kind of all over the place (mostly the clothes!!!) but i tried to mix eah and monster high. i do like the idea that her wings are both bone AND feathered and that u can see her bones through her skin:) and she would def come with a radio and bow and arrow. she'd probably have a box of valentines chocolate too ! i dont know!! but yeah heres a rushed take ^^''

me: i'm not going on another cleo rant reality: so anyways that was a lie-

lemme start off with cleo is not meant to be nice. she is not some sweet, misunderstood character. she's a mean, misunderstood character. if the live action is truly drawing from g3 then less so because apparently g3 cleo has like. no family problems because nefera's apparently an angel and all that? i haven't watched but that's what i've gathered. so then she's just a mean character but she's a mean character who's a love interest and can be nice on occasion. which is so counterintuitive to the absolute experience that is g1 cleo. the core of cleo ( in g1 and in my canon ) is a girl under pressure to be perfect and to be a princess due to the horrible manipulation and anxiety caused by her father and older sister. sometimes i think the writers of the movies or at least jy understood this because based off her portrayal in the movies, i actually don't think cleo's character is written that badly ( not perfect but compared to some- ). she is haughty, she's a bit snide, she says a few mean things here and there to sell her nature, she is pretentious... but she's far from being the character that the others make her out to be. deuce at one point basically says her heart is rotted and it's just? it's so obvious the writers are trying to shove down the viewers' throats that deuce doesn't like cleo anymore and has moved on to clawdeen lightning fast. he's genuinely pretty mean to her. he's the one who talks behind her back about her and everything, and clawdeen disguised at bloodgood even tries to be critical of her when all she was doing was literally dropping off notes as she was asked to do. cleo just gets upset deuce and clawdeen liked each other so fast which like?? valid? her heart was broken and it was recently? like a summer during highschool is not a long time?? and if they're following g1 at all then she's under a lot of pressure and tension from her family to remain cool, confident, and royal like. so yeah she does and says some slightly mean things but also like?? compared to what the others said and did to her, it's a little weird. she becomes the brunt of the "she's mean" jokes despite the fact she's barely mean in comparison to the other characters. they treat her very badly but then make her part of the crew and a good person in the end which makes all the cruelty feel a bit gross? especially from deuce.

idk. i have problems with the fast he got turned into obsessed lover boy for claw in the movie. and he's generic love interest in the show i think? ( i haven't watched so while i'm not saying the show is bad, when i critique it, it's more just me feeling like the writers were lazy... i think they made some weird choices but g3 ultimately is different from g1 so not fair to compare... though doesn't feel like live action follows g3 entirely so it's this weird mix and i have to address everything ). and then cleo just gets turned into generic love interest for frankie? no family trauma or struggles she's just. the snootyish popular one who can be loyal and is apparently obsessed with humans? which is even weirder given she's one of the only monsters who was born human and turned monster eventually? and the show must give them better chemistry because movie cleo and frankie is nothing. and then in regards to their relationship in g1 honestly i think making them a couple would invalidate the super important friendship they have. so much of the g1 show is around frankie being able to connect people ( because she's/they're made up of different parts, she/they knows how to help others come together ). making cleo her/their love interest invalidates that ( i'm using both pronouns currently because i'm referencing both g1 and g3 frankie ). unpopular opinion maybe but they did it because deuce was easy main character love interest and so then just throw cleo into the gay ship for the brownie points. gestures wildly at all the other characters that weren't in a healthy and adorable relationship prior. gestures wildly at toralei and clawdeen?? twyla and howleen? all the other incredible characters who were perfect for a relationship with frankie? again. haven't watched the show so biased thoughts on that lol. ( disclaimer: g3 cleo and frankie could be totally adorable and make sense i just think it's a poor and weird decision by the writers in such a vast and creative universe of characters when cleo was in a loved and respected and healthy ship people enjoyed prior? ) but basically cleo in the movies isn't terrible and gives me room to pull g1 content in and make her a fun mixture of live action plot and drama and then g1 backstory and cutes. but man she gets sidelined hard in the movies. she was the one who was following frankie to begin with to get the message for help and she listened. she was the one who came up with the selfie idea and gave her phone to clawdeen for deuce because she still loves him but the writers made him move on from her like old cheese. she ran clawdeen's entire prefect campaign. cleo listened and was willing to change and was one of clawdeen's first supporters through it all. and yet the writers are supposed to have us believe she was atrocious to deuce as a girlfriend because of the things he says? like no her family has to be mean in the live action because it makes no sense otherwise for her to seem like two completely different characters. that or deuce is just a liar to the max in the live action. which, again, could be possible because the writers are trying to sell the idea that cleo and deuce aren't a thing. it's very weird to me because i love live acton cleo and i love g1 cleo. and i think it's more how the movie cleo was treated that irritates me more than anything because she did cleo things but was just. absolutely ignored or mistreated or etc.

Not that I'm someone who owns dolls so LMAO WHAT SHOULD IT MATTER TO ME?! but, I'm glad to see the refresh doll for Draculaura is cute! :') I look forward to seeing ACTUAL collectors unboxings of her when she drops, lmfao.

The puffy sleeves are, a Choice, but everything else? very cute! :'o Her little bat bento box, and the charm on her backpack are SUCH cute little details.

Man, all draculaura dolls are so dang cute... like she got an absolute banger of an aesthetic. Very spooky-cute/pastel goth.

like they absolutely NAILED it with her g3 doll designs. I don't think there's any I HATE, tho these three are probs my least favorites, and even then it's just minor nit-picky things I don't like.

like with the first one, it's the yellow-green earrings. Lmfao I just, don't like them, I don't think they're necessary to tie the color on the skirt into the whole look, bc she already has it on her under eye makeup (which I think looks fine! It's just a tiny little pop of the color). I think the earrings being purple to match her lipstick would have looked nicer, or even white, since she doesn't really have any white on her head (unless you count the whites of her eyes which, lmao I don't), and I think it'd tie the look together nicely if she did.

for doll #2, it's the bat-shaped holes that go all around the brim of her hat. They look dumb as shit:

lIKE WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?? It's so stupid and impractical for a vampire, and it ruins an otherwise cute accessory for the doll to have.

and lastly for doll #3…idk, it's just something about the hair style that I don't fully like about the doll… LOVE the giant bow, thought. I'm a big giant bow fan, lmao. I think restyled hair would, for me, bring the doll up to absolute banger tier with the other 13.

honorable mention to Abbey and Twyla who ALSO got a couple p cute dolls (and gr8 color schemes)… they're some of my other favorite MH dolls, after like every single Draculaura lmao.

Cleo has some really pretty dolls... can't go wrong w/ ancient Egyptian aesthetic,

and Lagoona has some dolls that I WANT to like— I think she's colorful and fun, but that I don't bc of the weird dots(I think they're supposed to be scales) on her forehead, I think those are ugly and IDK why her doll has them… she doesn't in the series (tho she seems to in her official art…)

Frankie's another one that's got a fun colorful design.

lmao I think the only g3 characters that don't have aNY doll designs I particularly like are Deuce, Ghoulia, and Toralei…

MAYBE Clawdeen too, but she's another of those 'I wANT to like, but' similar to Lagoona, only my thing w/ Clawdeen is a lot of her outfits are ugly, and I HATE her hair color:

these four Clawdeens are the closest to 'okay, I don't completely HATE these—', but none of them are, imo, good. 1-3 have outfits I kind of like(but I hate all their hair colors), and #4 has the hair color I like most of all the Clawdeen dolls, but I hate her outfit lmfao it's so ugly… I've yet to see a Clawdeen doll with both hair color AND outfit that I like on the same doll.

ALSO, I actually recently was able to finally find somewhere to watch MH, and did so, and I'm happy to report Draculaura is my favorite not JUST aesthetically! Also—pleasantly surprisingly—Cleo is a close second fave… I went in expecting like, 'bitchy popular girl' or s/t from her, but she's a sweetheart, and I love her...(I also think Cleo/Frankie is a bit out of nowhere and she'd be cuter with clawdeen, bUT, that is irrelevant). I actually like all of the mains, tho don't/didn't care much for Toralei, bc SHE was giving the bitchy thing I was expecting from Cleo—but she seems like she gonna get better/have character growth? so that's good and maybe I'll like her more…

I’m getting more tired of people complaining about the people who complain about G3 lol like I love G3 MH but ffs, you’re cluttering the MH tag with complaints every G3 fan and their mom has already voiced over and over.

So no, you’re not the only one constantly complaining about people who dislike G3. If you want to provide counterpoints against G3 hate, maybe post about things you like about G3 and what it does right.

Or make a masterpost of debunked G3 complaints or smth so that you don’t have to constantly post over and over about it, just link to your post.

you want positive stuff g3 did? i’ll give you positive stuff g3 did

cleo’s darker skin tone. she was so stupidly pale in g1, it’s a nice change

clawdeen’s fur. she’s a werewolf, it just make sense that she gets to have fur. it’s also surprising honestly that it wasn’t a thing in g1

the witchcraft plot. a lot of people think it’s too much, but i absolutely love it. it brings another aspect to explore, gives more dept to the monster high universe and brings something new for the reboot

frankie’s prosthetic. they’re made of separate bits and pieces, and the fact that not all of them are human is just cool. it also implies that they can switch their limbs for different uses, which has been shown to be true in the series

frankie’s pronouns. the representation is sooo important, and it’s nice to see that monster high did it. frankie was also the perfect character to do so, which is even better considering that they didn’t force androgyny on them. they still get to dress fem and have long hair, without it making them any less valid

draculaura as a witch. don’t get me wrong she was great as just a vegan vampire, but i won’t be the one to complain about one adding more to their character. the whole conflict that creates with dracula also allows him to be more in the picture: he was hardly spoken of in g1

the different body types. you don’t notice it when you’re an eight year old playing with your cool monster dolls, but it’s super important. g3 fixed the “everyone has the same body type” issue perfectly. just take a look to draculaura and abbey! or even frankie, who is much taller than the other dolls

those are just the first ones that come to mind too. so no, i’m not just here to bash those who hate without reason, i also have genuine reasons to like the reboot

first look at the monster high g3 animated series

alright rather than bombard u all with a series of posts im just gonna go in for a second watch and put a play by play of my impressions under the cut. reader beware: its going to be long and stupid as hell.

0:18 the new design for the school is kind of amazing. like part of me misses the more traditional spooky-gothic-castle but like i cant deny that the big lightning bolts look cool af and i do think it has more character than the g2 which imo just kind of looked like. a school.

0:33 new spectra is soo cute lol she wasnt anywhere near my fav in the old series but smth about the big flowy purple curls is rly charming me this time around

1:10 i rly like a lot of these background monster designs. this zombie girl in particular is very cute and also i think i spied a werewolf boy in the back who i liked.

1:19 still obsessed with this cleo design. hope future dolls get better at capturing her charm and in general they stop being so weird abt her race and skin color. also for all that ive seen folks worry that this gens cutesier design will mean taking out the more horror-adjacent elements for the sake of better fitting the typical Girl Toy brand, im so happy to see mh3 doesnt shy away from a bit of tasteful gore <3

5:11 ok i know i said this when the sneak peak came out but the idea that heath is an actual demon and son of the literal DEVIL this time around, confirming that hell is real in monster high lore, is making me insane. i genuinely love it. wish theyd given heath some cute lil horns or a tail.

5:37 dracula being this like celebrity in the monster world i think is an interesting take but i feel like im gonna get so annoyed if his character starts showing up a lot. idk i dont hate it its just a weird vibe.

6:05 it took a while to click since clawdeen doesnt talk a lot in this ep but it is kind of weird hearing her (and draculaura) without an accent. i kinda found g1 draculauras voice a little grating at times so i dont mind that and i do rly like how clawdeen sounds more like an actual kid but idk i miss the accent

6:28 theres not a whole lot to say on deuce since hes only here for side gags in this ep but just wanted to go on the record with: i think hes cute

6:42 weirdly super enamored with the food-creatures, especially the burger lol. reminds me of bugsnax. also this whole fight sequence rly displays how far mh animation has come from rigid flash animations of a handful of stock characters. its neat.

9:08 lol ok i know its probably just another reference to dracula being bad with technology (cute trait for him tbh) but when i first saw this i couldnt help over-analyzing with my Lore Brain and wondering if it was also a reference to vampires not showing up on camera. but then i realized the kid he takes a pic with also has fangs and bat wings and shows up fine so thats probably not it, especially since drac canonically shows up fine in video.

9:50 the "bat out" reoccurring line is so incredibly cheesy it makes sense hes quoting it from some 70s b-movie he was in. but that doesnt make it any less cringey to me. also i know i said he kinda annoys me and he does but i do desperately wanna know how this bitch got into show business. drac backstory please. dracstory, if you will.

10:45 im reeeeally excited to see how this plot develops. i honestly assumed this series would be more like the web shorts except longer and more developed. as in, episodic and largely unrelated to one another, but im soo hype to see them doing something more serialized with overarching conflict and stakes. also we <3 classic troublemaking cant mind her own damn business toralei. like girl you have no reason for acting like this. she is simply a messy bitch.

final thoughts: really really liked it. love the visuals and the ways the new characterization plays with old beloved traits. love that this series has more of a familiar cartoon hijinks vibe rather than leaning too hard into it being like a Teen Girl Show just because the toys are first and foremost a fashion doll line. i dont know if im articulating that well i just mean i like that the girls are allowed to have like a full range of motion and action and emotion, and that they can be like gross and funny in addition to pretty. i think g1 had a good start in this regard but was definitely limited both by the animation and the expectation to follow that niche established by like barbie/bratz animated works (no hate to any of those either tho)

there are changes that ill need to get used to obviously, but i feel like the franchise is heading in a strong new direction. i saw some folks complaining that the bits about draculauras witchcraft and clawdeens half monster/half human felt like they were introduced as a means to employ annoying Fantasy Racism tropes, and thats a really valid criticism, but its also kind of something monster high has always done (with regards to monster/human conflict, certain monsters being discriminated against for certain traits, jackson jekylls entire character, etc).

i get the concern, but i feel like in a series so centered on embracing differences its kind of impossible to not include issues of discrimination, and it being a kids fantasy series, that does sometimes translate in a way that feels wonky or oversimplified at best. tho tbh monster highs execution regarding the subject always kind of felt to me like one of the better ones. idk. im just feeling good about this first look and excited to see how the show and the monster high franchise as a whole develops further as we move forward.

anyway stan g3 lagoona she deserves better than the g1 purists have been giving her.

Unorganized doll thoughts as a collector and what I'll seek out outside of a good condition lot.

Abbey Bominable. Not interested in seeking out her g1 doll. I hate tinsel, I hate the gritty feeling of her glitter skin. I love her character so much but no. Not paying g1 prices for sensory ick

Amanita Nightshade, Batsy Claro, Casta Fierce a serve but since I don't have any nostalgic feelings towards her I won't be seeking her out.

CA Cupid. I had her as a kid but between the jacked up resell prices and her atrocious to maintain or restyle hair I'll pass.

Clawdeen Wolf little dead riding hood. She's the only g1 clawdeen I want but Don't have. I had her as a kid and oh god I would love to have her again. Seems like a lot of kids agreed that the cape was stiff and got in the way of play because sooo many of them are missing that signature cape

Cleo de Nile. Hated her as a kid. These days, I was upset at work and I imagined cleo sticking up for me and it gave me the strength to get through my shift. But.. there's that tinsel (and the fact that she looks WAY too human). So there's limited releases I actually enjoy of Cleo because of this. As fun as her gimmick is it can be very hit or miss for me. Sooo here are my top hits for her. Dead tired! Love this line and I love the cozy looking mummy pajamas. Picture day! Not really nostalgic to me since I didn't discover the picture day line til earlier this year like 11 years after it ran. But yeah definitely a serve. Skull shores cleo! No tinsel and I LOVED her awesome swimsuit coverup. Yeah those are my favorites that I'd actually go out of my way to add to my collection.

Tbh the way g3 Draculaura is SERVING i don't feel the need to seek out her g1 counterparts. But there are a few that come to mind. Dead tired because duh pajamas are always cute. Ghouls rule because DOPE ass wings. But she is kinda expensive and would probably need a reroot because monster high dolls with curly hair Don't stand the test of time and play. Skull shores, not gonna pay big bucks for this, again. But I do love her.

Not gonna feed into mega scalpers to get their g1 releases, but I might pay the slight outrageous prices. I don't even care about all the work that their hair is gonna need like rerooting and unglueing. That yellow glue in their white hair... oh frankie blond is not your style

Ghoulia... I get a bit more feral for g1 ghoulia. Others that are already in g3 I don't mind putting aside for their modern releases. But... ghoulia in g3 is... lacking to say the least. Tbh, I love almost every ghoulia. I just can't buy the world sooo these are the ones I prioritize in browsing. Dead tired. I was looking for her yesterday and a memory was unlocked when I saw her popcorn bag full of brains accessory. I LOVED that accessory as a kid. This ghoulia slept in a swiffer box that I made into a dollhouse bed in the room that I had frankie and ghoulia share in the dollhouse. Sooo... Skultimate roller maze ghoulia is also on this list. And damn I hope ghoulia gets a creeproduction. Hate the whole kenkolin thing tho. But hey maybe I could just try to get her nib hoping the glue seepage isn't too bad. Or I could just reroot her. I liked the all red reroot I saw on reddit. Mattel failed forgetting how much red is totally ghoulias color

I already have a honey Swamp but the previous owner removed her face so it'd be nice to have her signature or freak du chic doll just to own her original faceup. Because as fun as trying to paint her face will be I know I won't be able to do it justice

Operetta I have 3 of her but it'd be nuce to have her original but her hair would probably be a lot of work. Tbh I might just buy her little suitcase thingy because that's what I miss the most about having her original

Twyla. As much as it'd be cool to have a g1 twyla I probably won't seek her out to buy outside of some lot.
