you had quite a compelling thought going in your tags of that bridglar gifset about loving something that cannot love you back... it would be a pleasure to hear the rest of what you had to say about it

I don't know that my thoughts on this are fully formed quite yet, but I'll tell you what I'm thinking so far and I'll start on a personal note.

I've always been fascinated with mythology and folklore - that fascination informed my artistic practice back when I was properly practising and is a huge part of the reason that I then progressed into the field of history and heritage.

As fascinated as I was, though, I found that I didn't actually believe in any of it which got me thinking - what does inspire that kind of feeling in me? That belief? That sort of religious-level ecstasy?

The simple answer was the great outdoors, the landscape itself.

I ascribed my own personal mythology to the landscape around me and ended up pursuing a literal artistic pilgrimage through key locations in the Highlands near my home back in Scotland which culminated in climbing my own personal 'Holy Mountain'.

(That was literally a decade ago and, let me tell you, my toes still haven't fully recovered from all that hiking!)

Which is all to say that when it comes to the idea of loving an entity that cannot love you back, I wonder, now that I've thought more on it, if perhaps it's a matter of perspective and expectation?

Yes, it's sad to think of how much those men would've loved the sea itself and how the sea did not, could not love them back. How it was the sea itself that doomed them, at least in part.

I think a lot about how they possibly could have reconciled that but then I remember my own experiences in the landscape, the love I feel for it and the joy it continues to bring me. And I think perhaps that you just don't and shouldn't love something of that magnitude in the first place for anything else but what it is or with any expectation that it'll love you back.

As I touched on in the tags of that earlier post, most of those men would have been at sea since their childhood/youth and built their entire lives around it, would've known it intimately.

So yes, while the sea is a cruel mistress who could not love them back, I think that there's perhaps a more positive spin to be found here.

That there's perhaps something quite beautiful and profound and, dare I say, holy, in the notion that they would've known full well the unloving, cruel, and capricious nature of the sea and that they would've carried on loving her regardless.

I've waffled on long enough now so I'll end on a more historical/Terror-specific note and say that I think there's also a really interesting conversation to be had about colonialism/empire vs the sea/landscape.

Though the men don't love the empire itself per se, their lives have been defined by it and everything they've done within their careers has served it in some way. Yet at the end of the day, it is just another entity that, for lack of a better phrase, doesn't love them back, doesn't care for them at all.

The key distinction to be made here, I think, is one of 'can't' vs 'won't'.

It's sad that the sea doesn't love or care for you, yes, but that's only because the sea is a natural entity that cannot love or care for anything. Think of how, despite it all, the love still endures for Peglar and there is at least something approaching closure for him as result. Even as he's dying he still loves Bridgens and he still loves the sea, even after all it's put him through.

To live your life, however willingly, in service of an entity like colonialism/empire is another thing entirely though. That's a man-made entity that doesn't care for you not because it can't but because, quite frankly, it doesn't fucking want to. An entity that had the choice and the power to care for you and chose not to. Think of James Clark Ross, for example, and the way his face drops when he realises that, despite everything that's happened and everything they've given in service of it, the Admiralty and the Empire still care more about finding the Passage than finding the men lost to it.

Now that's a tragedy!

Tagging System:

I've finally worked out a system to tag posts so that they can be searched for. I think it's important to point out that tumblr's tagging and search functions aren't great, but the system should help if you're looking for specific content on the blog.

I try to put the tags in order of importance for the first five tags, but sometimes it's just whatever comes to mind after the first two or three.

The main tag will be "Source Material" followed by "Stuff". You can also search by book, couple's ship name, a character's full name, ect.

Examples:

#devil's night series stuff will get you most the posts for devil's night, spanning across characters, couples, and books.

#asked and answered, followed by #[character's full name] will get you the asks that are about that character.

#nikova banks will bring all the posts that feature banks while #kaibanks should only result in posts that feature them as a ship or couple

I've begun using the tag #the horsemen of devil's night and #the women of devil's night for posts that involve three or more of the guys, or three or more of the women (sorry, I'm still not referring to them as the cowgirls).

If there's a post that contains hate or negative speech that's not just analysis or general discussion, I'll put "anti" in front of the character's name, so that you can blacklist it if you'd like to, though it's not very often.

Posts, especially long ones, will be tagged with what the post is about. Such as, #moodboard, #gifset, #character analysis or discussion, and whatever else is covered in the post. After that will be general commentary, which I think is pretty funny.

I've tried to tag on-going discussions so that they can be filtered out to follow them more easily, and I'll try to keep a link on the masterlist.

Other Tags:

I have also been using #fandom stuff, #writing, #reading,

#gilmore girls stuff, with the same idea as above; couple/ship name, followed by character's full names,

#leverage stuff as well.

I wanted to ask you if you know where I can find a psd with a similar coloring like your profile picture? I’ve seen some pale gifsets in this soft pinkish tone and I love it, but it’s so hard to find! 🥺

Also, regarding those pale gifs with a slight touch of pink, I 100% agree. It took me ages to understand how to make them proprely for my gifs and edits.

♡ Winter 2021 Anime I Dropped ♡

as of now this is the anime i've already dropped for the season! i have a 3-episode rule where, if after 3 episodes, the anime hasn't caught my attention i'll drop it to save myself time. i'd rather not force myself to watch something i know i won't enjoy! sometimes i do drop them sooner if it's that bad

honestly.......i don't have much to say here. while i initially found the premis interesting, the speed at which the main characters are suddenly girlfriends was uh? quick that's for sure! and while i understand it's meant to be humorous, i didn't really find anything funny about the school nurse constantly stripping for no reason in the middle of school hours and constantly hitting the main character. blood fetish was the main point of humor in this story, and i can tolerate a bit of ecchi in anime, but this really hit all the wrong notes for me. instead of laughing i just sat there wondering why i still had the tab open

Project Scard: Scar on the Praeter

i wanted so desperately to like this one! i've enjoyed anime by GoHands before, but like i mentioned in a post before, this was overkill. its like they didn't know when to stop. usually we complain about under done animation and can nitpick where improvement could have happened. here its the opposite, there's too much going on. there's so many textures, reflections, and moving pieces with very little contrast between the foreground and background, making it almost impossible to focus on what's happening. in gifsets this anime will look wonderful, but when you watch a full scene you realize there's no anchor points for your eye to settle on. this is what overachieving and still failing looks like

Ex-Arm

i genuinely don't even know what this is about, i couldn't get past 5min because for some reason only the protag looks 3D when no one else does and it's not even good 3D. as of writing this the anime literally has a 2.24/10 on My Anime List and only 3 episodes have aired so far. did they even have a budget when they made this?

Hortensia Saga

i don't really have anything negative to say about this one, its a pretty standard medieval fantasy anime, but thats what put me off wanting to continue it. there's a lack of originality, there's nothing in the first few episodes that makes me want to root for or support a specific character. plus the action sequences were kinda lackluster. basically it's boring; unless this is your favorite type of story and you're interested in something that sticks to tropes pretty closely, or you're a fan of the game it's based on, you're going to be snoring really quickly

Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun / Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki

12min in and i was rolling my eyes so hard it started to hurt. what seems like a story about a gamer who makes friends and gains a girlfriend really just boils down to, well. pretentious gamer boy meets a pretentious gamer girl and she.....teaches him how to be a normie and blend in with the rest of society by dressing nicer? i guess? this could have been decent if it was played off in a comedic way, but instead it's handled really seriously and as a result i couldn't take it seriously at all. the more the characters monologued about how unfair and difficult life is because they look slightly different or had different interests than most people, the further they dug a sad and pathetic pitty hole to lie in. this feels like a horrible message to send to people who feel somewhat isolated from their peers and decide to blame it on these small incongruities instead of practicing some interspection, or seeking professional help if their problems are that severe
