When Kate recieved her invitation to the annual party that her university friend, Emily Beavan, was having, she had to think for days if she was going to go ir not. Less than a month a half ago, William and her had ended their relationship, burying everything they had lived and toning down any possible future they could have had together. She avoided looking at any tabloid or web in case one of them talked about the prince.
Pippa insisted on her not locking herself at home and start looking for a hobby or going out, instead. And that's what she did. The fact that William wasn't a usual topic during dinner at home helped, and she started feeling a lot better taking care of herself. Emily had told her that the prince wouldn't be at the party because he was in Scotland at the moment, that made Kate go to the event.
The brunette got out of the car thanking her sister the ride, her friend's party was going to take place on the outskirts of London, in a big mansion. Before ringing the door bell she took out a little mirror she had in her handbag, fixing her hair, then she walked to the door. The one to open her wasn't Emily but Emma, another friend from university.
-Kate, long time no see!-They hug and looked at each other after all those years.
-I know, to much, but you look great.
-You look gorgeous yourself, I love the dress, you know I always adored how that colour looks on you.-Said Emma about the dress Kate was wearing, a light-blue column type one that showed her bests curves. Just after closing the door to continue the conversation inside, Emily appeared out of nowhere, breathing hard like she had just ran.
-Kate... He-Hello... I...
-Hey, breathe, what's the matter? Did I had to bring ice?-She asked taking her hand and looking ar Emma, who was as clueless as she was and gave her own drink to Emily. After drinking and calming down, she looked at Kate again.-You are starting to scare me...
-Look I swear I had no idea when he was coming back and believe me that, if I had known, he wouldn't be here... But he showed up without saying anything and I couldn't kick him out.-Kate threw her head back, laughing, this was unbelievable, she had been so good without knowing anything about him that she was almost over the hole thing.-I will totally understand if you don't want to stay...
-And losing the chance to show him what he's been missing?
-That's my girl, I'll be right next to you, don't worry.-Said Emma grabbing her by the arm and stepping into the party.
Once inside they both grabbed a drink trying to distract themselves. They tried to say hi to everyone they knew, walking arround and chatting. They ended up next to the dance floor where Guy approach her to talk. Even if he was one of William's best friends, her relationship with him had always been rather cold, but after the breakup he called her to tell her the big mistake that, in his opinion, the prince had made and that she could count on him for anything.
They started a conversation and Kate lean on him when she felt his arm arround her wait, not as a romantic gesture but as a  friendship one. When the music changed other couples started to dance and the brunette smiled, not regretting coming to the party. But that little bubble popped when she saw a blond prince too familiar on the dance floor.
William was laughing with a girl whom Kate couldn't see very well, but when she did something inside her broke. Isabella Calthorp. That was unbelievable, from all the women in the world, it had to be her?
Guy and Emma noticed the sudden change in their friend and looked at William, trying to avert Kate's attention. A minute later, the prince took the blonde heir for a dance, laughing and getting very close to one another.
Kate had too many feelings running through her body in that moment, she had finished her drink a while ago and now her fists tighten, nearly scratching her own palms. But her heart broke when she saw how William kissed Isabella, grabbing her by the waist, like he used to kiss her. Her strength to keep the tears back vanished and they started running down her cheeks.
When the young prince broke the kiss, he noticed a look and turned his head, finding Catherine on the other side of the dance floor, with her hands tightly closed and shiny eyes. William realized she was holding herself back, they had been together for a long time so he knew those things. On the other hand Kate turned arround to walk away, broken and disconsolate to have seen his eyes again. She needed to breathe.
William didn't think it twice and went after her, leaving a very surprised Isabella on the dance floor. But then, Guy's body got in his way.
-Let me pass Guy, please.
-Oh, now you say please? And sorry?
-Realy, don't get in my way...-William only thought about getting to Kate, something moved inside of him when he saw her.
-Or what? Are you going to call to break up with me?-Guy did that on purpose with a clear reference of what he did to their friend. William reached his limit and pushed Guy to a side, walking straight to the garden where he saw Kate going.
-Coward...-Whispered Guy, but William ignore him.
Once outside he saw nobody and the music volume was quieter than inside. It was quite dark but thanks to the house lights, he could spot a light blue dress setting on a bench. When he walked closer he started to hear the brunette's sobs.
-Catherine...?
Kate stood up when she recognized the voice. She could barely see him but the moonlight and the house light helped, she  hadn't seen him this close for a long time. She wiped out her tears without a word, suddenly finding the ground quite interesting. To hear her name like only he could say it sent a shiver down her spine.
-Catherine I...-She laughed at his words.
-You what, William?
-I didn't know you were here... I'm really, really sorry... If I had known...
-If you had known, what? It's your life... You Can do whatever and whoever you want.-Her voice broke with every word, trying to hold back her tears.-Do you know the worst part?-Then she looked at him, starting to cry again.-That from all the women in the world, you had to run straight to her arms.
William felt like something broke inside of his chest when he saw his first true love crying like that, specially when he realized he was the one to blame. He tried to talk but any word could come out of his mouth and Kate spoke again.
-I knew that you'd break the promise you made me of not to see her or speak to her again but...-She made a pause to sob and take a deep breath.-I just didn't think it would be this quick...
-Catherine please.-The prince stepped closer stretching his arm but stopped when Kate stepped back.-I couldn't stop thinking about you, not a single day...Isabella, Isabella is not... She is nobody.
Kate smiled sadly when she noticed the beg in his voice. She looked at William in the eyes and her tears ran down her cheeks again.
-And even that you made your choice.-She said starting to walk back inside the house, passing by his side.
William lowered his head when she walked next to him, tightening his fists with rage and anger at himself. When he heard her behind him, he turned arround. Before realize what was happening, the brunette felt a hand in her arm and how she was being pulled back by the prince, not being able to stop him.
Their bodies were pressed together as well as their lips. William was pulling her closed by the waist, keeping her there and tasting the sour flavor of her tears. Kate put her arms on his shoulders, around his neck.
They were kissing like they hadn't done in a long time, discovering their lips and tongues again, as they had been dreaming ever since that phonecall. They felt like floating in a bubble until Kate's hands were placed in William's cheeks to break the kiss, placing both her thumbs on his lips. She lean her forehead on his nearly crying again and seeing how William was about to do it with her.
-This... It's not... It's not fair.-She whispered just before stepping back and starting to run towards the house.
William let a tear scape from his eyes when he saw his true love getting lost in the party, when the cold replaced the warmth of her body, when he realized the big mistake he had done.
