Do you have any tips on how to write a female character that's majoring in journalism?
oh boy!!!!!! generally, character-wise, people will of course approach things in different ways, so i’m gonna like mention you know said character and the decisions that she’d make better than anyone else, but i’m gonna write about 1. some “character archetypes,” as it were, that comprise a lot of female members of my journalism school, 2. some general advice on personality traits that would likely be useful/realistic for a female journalism character, and 3. what not to aspire to when it comes to writing women in journalism (ie, this section is just gonna be my biggest gripes about how female journalists tend to be portrayed in media.)
let’s get into it!
section one: “character archetypes,” aka the average personality a lot of female members of my journalism school.
a lot of my really great friends are in the journalism school, and their personality types vary greatly. there are so many awesome women in journalism and this isn’t exactly, like, “BE EXACTLY LIKE THIS OR SHE ISN’T A REALISTIC JOURNALIST,” these are just some character traits/personality things that i’ve noticed when it comes to a lot of aspiring female journalists.
curious. always write them as curious. that’s the backbone of being a journalist is being curious and going after the story. they want to know more about the world, they want to know more about their communities, and they want to provide the perspectives for you, or the reader, or the community, so that you can be better informed/make decisions/be aware. journalists, above all, have that curiosity down; journalism majors can rarely stand not knowing things.
(this also means that female journalists, and journalists in general, really, are very tuned into gossip. not even necessarily “he said she said” gossip, though that can be interesting sometimes too, but things like who got what good grades, which professor said this, what internship accepted who? journalists are basically trained to be investigative and dig deep for things; when it comes to, say, two editors being snappy at each other at a meeting, well, you want to know why, in case whatever is affecting them will affect you. again, not necessarily gossipy in a malicious way that can be portrayed sometimes! gossipy in the sense that they’re usually very in tune with their social circle and immediate community, as well as community at large.)
they are also researchers!!! many journalists are prone to the whole “wikipedia rabbit hole” research thing. they dive deep on a lot of subjects, both broad and narrow, and they like discussing these topics with each other, which again, can vary greatly! the biggest mbmbam/taz Stan i know is a female journalism major, and from there she has a very vested interest in dnd, all because it started with a few funny mbmbam clips (okay, guilty, i was one of the two people who mentioned that it would seem like her thing and now she’s way more into it than i am) and on the flip side of that, there are MANY female journalists who have made careers off their interests—film journalists, video gaming journalists, and social media/pop culture reporters all exist for a reason, and it’s likely because they marketed their interest and therefore “expertise” in these subjects and managed to spin a job out of it!
ambitious. so many kids in the j school strive for really great things, which is super crazy awesome, and they work really hard to achieve it. i know people who have netted amazing internship opportunities while they’re in the j school (we’re talking washington post, new york times, cnn, associated press, like, big organization names) and it’s because they have the ambition to achieve it. they dream big, a lot of the time, and tend to have detailed career goals to go with it.
inclined to ethical/moral discussions. there are a lot of ethical questions when it comes to covering news (there’s actually a wyliwf oneshot in the draft talking about one of my least favorite days of the semester that always comes up in class, which focuses on ethical decisions in times of death, major tragedy, or injury, look up “the breakfast test” if you want to learn more about that particular aspect of being a journalism major) but even when it doesn’t come to major disaster coverage, there are still a lot of little ethical questions to analyze in each area of journalism; journalistic ethics is a whole branch of conversation that i (and a lot of my fellow journalism majors!) fall into discussing. it can be things from the disclosing of anonymous sources to what is and isn’t right to photograph and the inclusion of certain sensitive information or ostracizing it and the importance of fact-checking. i think journalistic ethics is a really interesting topic and it’s usually one of my favorite things to discuss; this wikipedia page just scratches the surface, and here is the spj code of etihcs, widely regarded as a base code of principles for most american journalists to follow, but i encourage you to go out and seek other instances of journalistic ethics, because a lot of the time, what is legal for journalists to do isn’t necessarily right.
organized (even if it doesn’t look like it from the outside) or complete disaster
let’s take my friend, who i’ll call a.c. ac has a color-coded planner, frequently works ahead of schedule, plans out her entire day. she is very tidy, very organized, and seems generally put together. we were roommates in the fall semester and she had a tidy room, a set routine when it came to dinners and organizing her stuff, she’s very On Top Of It
and then there is me. ac once looked at me in horror when i was just starting to write a paper the morning it was due and informed me that the way i approach most deadlines is “her worst nightmare on drugs.” i forget assignments a lot and tend to scramble to do things at the last minute, i am a CHRONIC procrastinator, and yet i still make sure i get things done in time. in essence, i know my limits, and the pressure of a deadline tends to be what kickstarts me into starting those limits.
what i’m saying here is that it’s a vast spectrum, but what tends to drive most journalists is deadlines. journalism people are VERY deadline oriented and their approaches definitely vary, but that tends to be what they stick to most. journalists also tend to have perfectionist tendencies, as a sidenote.
stubborn. holy god. like, just look at the way journalists consistently send foia quests alone, for example, this story about journalists using foia to track hospital bed and ventilator availability in illinous (a dive into sunshine laws, aka releasing public records, which is a whole other thing that people very rarely tend to notice as an aspect of journalism but also lead to really big stories, especially if leaked (pentagon papers, anyone?) and just, yeah. check up on the state’s sunshine laws that you’re writing your story in, i think it could provide a real interesting subplot for you.) journalists. are. STUBBORN. i know people who have sat in offices waiting for public officials to come out for the better part of a work day; i know journalists who have sent hundreds of emails to get one interview; i know journalists who have staged stakeout sessions to see how public officials were using their time when they said they were in the office (hey, including me! i stood in a parking garage for three hours in the middle of winter for this exact purpose once.) what i’m saying here is they are stubborn. if there’s a story, they’re gonna dig. it took woodward and bernstein two years from the time of the watergate breakin to nixon’s resignation. most of the time, that stubbornness pays off.
competitive. yeah, remember that whole ambitious thing i mentioned earlier, coupled with the stubbornness above? journalists are competitive. it’s a competitive job market, so that means that many journalism majors tend to strive for those same big name journalism internships. this is definitely part of my j school culture, so i’m not sure if it’s the same at others, but a lot of people tend to examine what internships or job opportunities or professor favoritism or whatever and see what everyone’s doing, because everyone compares everyone to everyone else. this also tends to feed into other things: getting a story, getting good grades, so on. there’s a definite competitive sense to things, i’m not quite sure how to best explain it, but... yeah. journalists are competitive, sometimes. when it comes to women journalists, it can also be interpreted in other ways (”bitchy” is one) but a lot of journalism majors strive for the best.
supportive.
section two: some general advice on personality traits that would likely be useful/realistic for a female journalism character
a lot of these were touched on above, but i’d also just like to add: they probably have an interest in some aspect of “social justice,” as it were. feminism, ecological issues, economical issues, racial issues—most of the time, a lot of journalists see these real world issues and it’s what leads them into the career.
there’s also the whole... ugh... fake news media thing, which i feel like i have to touch on just because: i will say fake news is a meme amongst journalism majors, in that we mutter fake news to each other when our professors are like “this class average is so low y’all need to study more” when it’s their fault for not teaching us i won’t go on that tangent, however, i will also say that this whole idea has contributed to spiking rates of mistreatment and violence against journalists. i’ve been fortunate in that the most tense i’ve ever felt in that situation is taking an uber to a journalism assignment in a white guy’s truck littered with american flags and blaring alex jones on the radio, which i was able to lie and say that i was doing something else and concealing the whole journalism aspect, for my own personal safety, but a lot of other journalism majors i know aren’t so fortunate. i know women who have been yelled at, insulted, and there was a girl who worked around the same time as me who got spit on.
female journalists are usually treated more roughly regardless (when i went out for my first story, my editor sat me down and looked me in the eyes and said “someone might laugh at you because you’re young, and you’re a woman in print journalism, and you know what? fuck ‘em.” which was the first time i’d ever heard her swear and also one of the only times i’d ever heard her swear) so they tend to have to double down and really make sure they know their stuff in case they’re ever quizzed on it in a way that male journalists never really are. this is of course not to say that we’re all mistreated, all the time; it’s just something that female journalists are aware of, the way most women are aware of sexism in general.
section three: realism, and also, hey, maybe don’t do this? just because it’s both unrealistic and like. kinda sexist undertones imo
hoo boy. i’m just gonna take it down the list of some popularized media portrayals of journalists that you might be familiar with and outline why each one is, well..... Not My Favorite?
camille preaker, sharp objects
i do really like gillian flynn’s work, especially gone girl, but camille preaker just rubs me the wrong way? it primarily comes from the ethics involved in her whole situation, and i know they did it for ~drama, but it just... okay, here we go. for starters, you would probably not go out drinking with a source, unless it’s at an event, and you definitely don’t get drunk. you try not to interview people you have personal ties to, because the bias can infiltrate through your work. you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT sleep with your source, especially if he is a member of the police force and a primary source on the murder investigation you’re looking into. just...yeah, those two are the main things?
rita skeeter, harry potter
ugh, the way that rowling painted the daily prophet rubs me the wrong way. like, i understand, and i know that it’s probably more a mention of tabloid culture than like News, but it still just?? it’s the primary news source of the wizarding world?? really?? but yeah, sneaking into places (hospitals especially) to get a story is a massive no-no that would immediately get you arrested.
joan calmezzo, parks and rec
look, i know it’s a comedy, and i know that it’s not realistic, and i know that there is definite semblance for the “alcoholic journalist” thing (an editor i worked for once talked about how her old boss hid a flask in the water fountain in city hall so that he’d be able to get it and drink on the job) and statistically, it does show that journalists turn to sugar/alcohol/caffeine, but i just?? journalists wouldn’t show up to work absolutely blacked out, and if they did they’d definitely get fired.
rory gilmore, gilmore girls
the way rory approaches job hunting makes me cringe down to my very soul. in the original series, from what i’ve seen, she approaches it relatively well (applies everywhere she can, networks, ends up accepting a relatively small job that still provides a massive opportunity to report on a major political figure) but in the revival. who DID that. rory sleeps with a source (WHAT IS IT WITH FEMALE JOURNALISTS ALWAYS SLEEPING WITH SOURCES IN TV SHOWS AND MOVIES?!??!?!!? NO!!!!!!!!!) and falls asleep in the middle of an interview (N O !!!!!) and seems to not understand the concept of freelancing at all (really????? you aren’t working on multiple stories at once??? really????) and also just??? completely disrespects the basic semblance of a job interview??? no matter how impressive your resume is, you still come prepared with ideas and answer questions and no job is OWED to you, especially not with journalism being as competitive as it is, just????
the movie “absence of malice”
i know this one is probably less common, as it’s a movie from the ‘80s, but i still wanna talk about it anyway. sometimes, yes, you write about suspects of murder on the front page of the paper, but federal prosecutor’s don’t usually leak info like That (though rosen is obviously corrupt) and you just?? okay, anyway, carter not revealing her source is good, that’s what a journalist would do, however, teresa perrone disclosing personal information and pleading for her not to include it definitely falls under the realm of an anonymous source. the primary aspect of journalism is “do no harm,” and since disclosing what perrone told her would have harmed her livelihood, carter absolutely either shouldn’t have put it in or made perrone an anonymous source. then we get back to the whole dating sources thing (YOU DON’T DO IT!!!!!!) and then you don’t REVEAL THE SOURCE THAT HURT THIS MAN, OH MY GOD, you still have an obligation to protect your sources!!!! also just generally just!!! this movie does explore a lot of ethical journalistic issues but the sloppy reporting in it just puts me On Edge, ya know?

How do you feel about the article from yesterday? I've heard a lot of rumblings about how people are upset with the reporter...
Well, like I said in my tags, I’ve got mixed feelings.
On one hand, I don’t like the reporter at all. She’s written several stories about TS and she always promos them in the most clip bait way possible. She has in the past always pretended like she has some big scoop in her stuff and teases the fans directly about it only for nothing to really come from it in the end. All writers have an angle, that’s just human, but she is one of the ones that takes a very gossipy approach to how she frames things and this latest story is no different.
Stuff like bringing up the fanfiction or talking about the ‘pornographic’ lift - that stuff isn’t needed in a piece like this. She frames it as a portrait piece but in the end, most of her interviews were done months ago and there’s a lot of filling in the blanks and extrapolation (boarding on speculation at times) in between that she does that I don't agree with. These kinds of pieces are usually written by people who have close, personal connections and access to the people they are writing about and I don’t get the vibe that that’s the case here. It is supposed to be about Tessa’s thoughts and feelings but I don’t get that, I just get the author’s perspective. Tessa’s lukewarm response to it all also confirms to me that this piece isn’t some deep dive into her mind, it’s just a long winded version of some of the other pieces that reporter has done.
I think some of it was good, but mostly I just liked the actual quotes from Tessa herself. A piece like this, if done well, can be very powerful but given the history with this reporter, I just don’t see it as such.
As for the recording thing... I went to school for Journalism but I’m also American so the laws may be different in Canada but in America the recording without consent thing is a dicey subject and the laws vary from state to state. In my state, we have what is called ‘one party consent’ meaning that only the person recording needs to consent for it to be legal. You don’t have to ask to record someone and you can’t be sued for using that recording after the fact. However, the ethics of that are pretty grey. Most reporters I know would always make sure to ask all person’s involved in the interview or at least let them know they would be recording beforehand because it’s just the right thing to do.
While there wouldn’t be a legal issue, it just builds trust with the people you are working with and that leads to better interviews. Not to mention, it lets the person know that if they want to share something that they don’t want published (IE the famous ‘off the record’) then they need to actually say that phrase for the reporter to leave it out. If you don’t tell them you are recording, they might not ask for that and that again leads to a break down of trust. It’s not required, but any journalist worth their salt does it because it’s just good practice. The fact that she doesn’t do these basic things once again leads me to doubt the content of the piece because I don’t see how you could get something real and tangible if you aren’t following good interview practices.
Also, going back to what I said before, D also said that she had some issue with the questions being asked so that just reinforces the idea that this piece wasn’t the best conducted either from a journalistic or ethical perspective and so I deeply hesitate to give it the praise that I’ve seen some people give it on Twitter. At the end of the day, I don’t like or trust that reporter and the only parts of that piece I actually enjoyed were the direct quotes from Tessa herself. I wish dearly that an actual good journalist would write a piece like that in the proper way because I would actually be very interested in something like that if it was done well.

I originally wrote these reviews for this page, but I decided to go in a different direction with that site (no direction) - so here are two “album reviews”  (sorry)
Watch This Liquid Pour Itself
The first song is "Baby Little Tween" and the lyrics are like "these pills are gonna stop me from getting wet?" This is T.M.I., folks! Women's lib = out of control! Haha major JK, major JK. A few songs in, this is–PERHAPS–as the kids say, "2 twee 4me," maybe (the kids definitely say that! Stop judging me!!!).
Twee, though, not the right word? .... Post-Twee? Hmmm. Not here for some of this lullaby melody B.S. if we're being honest with one another. Ya can't say the word "piss" in a foreign language to win my heart back neither. (OKAY *KAYA*, maybe you can, OKAY?)
So... let's get right down to it: a song like "Psych Ward" has a cool bass line anchoring it and it starts off legit weird but then it is not weird at all, and on the whole that's my main issue. This record def WANTS to feel weirder than it actually is (ie, not that weird). The Gods of False Weird are not your friends, and are in fact a malevolent force. You have been forewarned traveler.
The end of that track is like a different track or something? I.D.K. I have it playing on a YouTube playlist now because my daughter commandeered Spotify to listen to Frozen II. So some of these are music videos is what I'm saying and I don't know if everything I'm hearing is "part of the song" or just like part of the video's intros/outros because I'm not watching the videos. However, if this whole thing was just the spoken words bit (like the beginning of "Asexual Wellbeing"), I would enjoy it more, I feel. It has its moments. Not tryin to totally shit on this project. (In fact, "Asexual" reminded me of the melodic side of Throbbing Gristle and was actually pretty damn good!) Anyway, I'm gonna give it a single * score because it's just too frustrating and maybe goes on a bit too long as well. Trust me, I damn well wanted to give it a higher score because I like the song titling a lot ("Zero Interaction Ramen Bar" is a great title! the song? meh). If grading song titles was a thing I did on this website then these would get an A, but unfortunately I only grade music and album art :( SORRY KAYA
Both
Did you know OKAY KAYA is from New Jersey? Hey that's where I'm from. (There is the potential for a 5-10% in-state bump in my scoring program, grading faculties, because of this, I feel like I need to mention. Although Wikipedia doesn't tell me where she's from. I'm not, like, a weird creep or nothing; just curious.) So, this is the first discography review here on this website RXGAU (legal acronym). It's a pretty random choice, but there are only a couple of releases and I feel like I can "bang it out" to "get the ball rolling" (sports terms).
This is Kaya Wilkins's first record released in 2018 and apparently she released a one-off song called "Damn, Gravity" in 2015 that's not on this record so I'll review that separately. The name of this game is Completion and I am The Completionist. And also what the heck were you doing in those three years, Kaya? Lazy bones.
I am listening to this after her more recent Jagjaguwar record. And right off the bat, there's a lot less going on. Another double-edged sword in my book. My book is very dangerous: lots of sharp blades and edged weaponry.
Also, two things: according to Wikipedia she has another thing coming out in 2020 on Jagjaguwar called Surviving is the New Living which is not a great title, and I'll have to look into that, but also not a lazy bones after all, are we? The second thing is that my damn daughter commandeered the Spotify YET AGAIN. (She really does not want me to listen to OKAY KAYA, OKAY?)
So I'm gonna hit pause on writing this review, which is a review for the debut album by OKAY KAYA and is called 'Both' but first let me say that I like the monicker OKAY KAYA a lot. It's cool looking on the page/screen and has a nice phonetic ring.
OKAY (KAYA) we're back. Before I start talking about the album that you are supposedly reading a "review" for (it shall begin in Paragraph 6, I really don't doubt it!), let me state that OKKLP3 (Surviving is the New Living) which apparently came out in April is gone now apparently? What the heck. Anyway, the only thing my lackadaisical (page 1 only!) googling could conjure is this Reddit thread (say la v):
BOTH. Not just one, but BOTH. It's a simple word. Four letters. Meaningful. Some sources have led me to believe that this was originally released under KAYA's full given name, but the album cover corresponding streams says otherwise. (That's neither here nor there.)
I'm not an alcoholic, but I'm always so tired I am always bored and always feel kinda bad Can't seem to get no sleep at night He used to call me every night this time
track 1 "Vampire" begins. These lyrics manage to feel BOTH confessional and off-the-cuff, in passing; fully inconsequential. The accompaniment is simpler, not necessarily more sparse than LP2 but definitely not as considered. The biggest difference is how she tackles most of the vox: it's much more of a crooning R&B here.
The songs here are short, just a couple eclipse the three-minute mark (14 in 37 minutes total), but they honestly feel even shorter somehow. "IUD" aims high but with a chorus like "Cause, baby, you're so baby, but I don't want your baby" misses the mark entirely. (I swear I'm not a "lyrics guy" unless you come at me with something amazing or something freshman year of college clever cringe until your face falls away; stay in the middle, baby.)
I dunno, I think I've heard enough. Is it ethical to only listen to half of an album and still review it? This one just isn't connecting at all. The other one had some interesting parts; not so much here 😑
I really wish that third record was still around because apparently that was made in quarantine? and I.D.K. I'd like to hear that I think. I think the idea of "quarantine records" even if they're almost guaranteed to let you down, like so many things....

Another Supervisor (ie Not My Usual Supervisor):  Would you like to be part of my team that will handle all the brand-new issues that are going to come up thanks to the bail reform statute that just went into effect?  I’m asking you because I was told to give these assignments to people I already supervise directly and I will, but it’s just going to be so many issues coming up, so I asked our boss who else I could pull in and you were the first she recommended.  She said you are extremely fast with special assignments and can be counted on to write a memo with good legal reasoning and good language that judges tend to steal for their opinions.  And I asked your supervisor if I could come to you and she also had nothing but good things to say about your writing and work ethic.  You have such a glowing reputation in this office already, and I’m not just saying that--you really do!  So, would you be interested?
One Small Part of Me:  It’s going to be more work and it might be stressful because there won’t be NJ case law in place about this stuff to rely on.  Multi-state research is harder and these questions will involve constitutional law which tends to be more difficult to sort through.
The Entire Rest of Me:  THEY PRAISED ME THEY PRAISED ME I HAVE A GLOWING REPUTATION I’VE ONLY BEEN HERE A YEAR AND I WAS THE FIRST RECOMMENDED FOR A SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF DEVELOPING THE LAW IN THIS STATE ON AN IMPORTANT SET OF ISSUES MY BOSS AND SUPERVISOR LOVE MY WRITING THEY PRAISED ME I AM A GOOD AND WORTHWHILE PERSON.
Me Out Loud:  Sure!  It sounds interesting and I’m happy to help!

1984 in 2017: In the spring of 2014, when Los Angeles City College performed a play of George Orwell’s “1984,“ I captured the following stills and wrote the two articles below. LACC also had several notable people come to our school to discuss drone surveillance, and the book club had special events too. I am publishing this now because it seems to apply even more today than it did a few short years ago. -Jessica Chortkoff : Heeding Orwell’s Warning Before it is Too Late Technology, privacy, torture, war, psychological manipulation, and control of history and information, were talking points at the Book Program’s series of discussions on George Orwell’s 1984, on April 22, 23, and 24. The discussions explored 1984’s protagonist, Winston Smith; his experiences, his family, and his motivations. Ignorance is Strength “You become so detached you don’t know the history anymore,” said Student Service Assistant Bessie Love, who led the Wednesday discussion with Evaluator Glenda Foster. Love read aloud Orwell’s 1944 letter to his contemporary, Noel Willmett. The letter predates the novel by several years. “Already history has in a sense ceased to exist, ie. there is no such thing as a history of our own times which could be universally accepted, and the exact sciences are endangered as soon as military necessity ceases to keep people up to mark,” Orwell wrote in the letter. In Orwell’s novel the protagonist, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, falsifying documents and rewriting history on a continuous basis. As the book says, “whoever controls the past controls the future.” “History is very important because it is a tool to teach us what happened in the past so it’s not repeated in the future,” said Eric Sherman, a student and theater major, who has spent three years portraying Martin Luther King Jr. in a one man show designed to bring the teachings of important historic figures to elementary school students. Sherman was surprised at how little the children knew about King’s life, and even how much he learned himself just preparing for the role. “When you revamp or you destroy that which has already been formally done, what happens is it brings people into a state of mind of ignorance, and once ignorance sets in you are 90% if not 100% of the time going to repeat something devastating, or a catastrophe from the past,” Sherman said. Freedom is Slavery The recent weakening of the Voting Rights Act reminded some of the participants of the novel as well, since this served to weaken the rights that the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution promises. Foster remembers accompanying her mother to the poles as a child and the problems she faced before the laws were put in place. “When voting rights started she got stopped at the poles, ‘oh, your grandfather didn’t vote’,” Foster said of those times. Foster went on to explain that in many small towns some people may have never possessed a voter ID. In the past their voice would have been heard, but now that has been complicated for them. “It just amazed me that this is an Amendment in the Bill of Rights and they are trying to take that away, just like in the novel,” said Sherman. Sherman feels this kind of tampering with rights puts the 13th Amendment in jeopardy as well. “Just like in the novel when they were slowly but surely taking things away, to put people in bondage, and into slavery, so they cannot think anymore, to not have a mind anymore, to [not] be able to function,” Sherman said. “If you don’t know your rights, if you don’t know what belongs to you, it’s easy for someone to come along and tell you oh, well this is not the way it’s supposed to be, it’s supposed to be like this…” Sherman said. Sherman is also very concerned about the breakdown of intimacy perpetuated by the use of devices such as cell phones and computers. “Big Brother was working to destroy intimacy in relationships, he didn’t want people to love anyone else but Big Brother, or to really have any sort of emotional connection to them,” Sherman said. “Really our society is being formulated that way because of technology, and we don’t really have that intimacy with each other anymore. Just by having normal conversation, or going to each other’s house and sit down and talk to each other. We don’t have conversations anymore.” He believes it takes communication to think outside the box, and to collaborate with fellow artists. Other topics included the news, which has seen an influx of celebrity gossip and a frightening lack of real reporting about issues of great importance around the world in recent years. Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7, the Book Program ended its tribute to 1984 with “The Drone Age.” Pepperdine Law Professor Gregory McNeal spoke May 6 at 12:30 p.m. Guest Speaker Heidi Boghosian, Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild, spoke on Wednesday, May 7, at 12:30 p.m., about drones and the importance of privacy. Drones Big Brother may not be watching you, but Uncle Sam is. The Los Angeles City College Book Program, as part of its ongoing series of events dedicated to George Orwell’s classic novel, 1984, presented two guest speakers to discuss the political, legal and ethical implications of government surveillance in “The Drone Age.” Gregory S. McNeal, Pepperdine University Law professor, counter-intelligence writer, commentator, and consultant, spoke to an audience of mostly students at the Faculty/Staff Center Tuesday May 6, and Heidi Boghosian, Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild, First Amendment writer, and radio host, spoke Wednesday May 7, at the 3rd floor multipurpose room of the Student Union Building. There was an excellent turnout for both, as both rooms were filled to capacity. The speakers were chosen to express opposing viewpoints. McNeal believes “Federal Legislation of privacy is a horrible idea.” Boghosian says that “On a typical day your image is caught on surveillance cameras at least 200 times.” McNeal spent the majority of his speech expounding on the logistics of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution. According to McNeal, America’s political climate is a far cry from Orwell’s imagined future. “To put a telescreen in your home would be illegal,” McNeal said. “It would not happen.” But according to McNeal, even if such a thing were to occur, the evidence it recorded would never stand up in court. “Even if you killed people, your children, that evidence would not be able to be used,” McNeal said. However, he also pointed out that there is not reasonable expectation of privacy behind a fence of any height, in one’s own back yard. If it can be viewed from the air over head, it is subject to surveillance. And although it is illegal for the police to use technology to see through walls, if the blinds are open that is a different story. McNeal’s point in the many instances he discussed it that what the average person think’s is a reasonable expectation of privacy does not always match up to what the court thinks is a reasonable expectation of privacy. For instance, there is no legitimate expectation of privacy for records turned over to the police by a third party, rather it be your cellphone provider, internet provider, a gas station camera, ect. Anyone can take this information, and it is not possible to use the internet or a cell phone without involving such a party. “It’s like being in your home and opening up your blinds,” McNeal said. What McNeal is more concerned with is the banning of cameras and drones in public parks. He told the story of a young boy using a drone to create an aerial map of a park, who according to McNeal, was threatened by the park with six months in prison. “To me that is actually the Big Brother I’m scared of,” said McNeal, “one that prevents drones.” Boghosian has what she calls a “very special job.” Part of her job involved going to protests and monitoring police treatment of activists. She brought up the events of the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. A spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union, had described the event as “nothing less than an orchestrated police riot.” That riot included the firing of rubber bullets into the crowd and beating people with batons. The National Lawyers Guild was able to file law suits and effectively change police policy. Boghosian’s book “Spying on Democracy: Government Surveillance, Corporate Power, and Public Resistance” was written with the treatment of protestors in mind. Boghosian sees a distinct relationship between the First Amendment and the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution, since she has seen many cases where FBI agents infiltrated certain groups, especially animal rights and environmental groups. “I have seen first-hand, a lot of stories of infiltration agents provocateur, going into grassroots organizations and really trying to disrupt the work of activists, especially those involved in animal rights and environmental causes,” Boghosian said. “Those two activists have been labeled the top terrorist threat in this country by the FBI, they are specially prone to infiltration.” She then told a story about how her organization, The National Lawyers Guild, was infiltrated. Agents went through their garbage, an agent posed as a staff member in their Washington DC office, their phones were tapped, their mail read, and an attempt was made to label them a subversive organization. The FBI did not succeed, however, because the NLG, after being monitored for 30 years, sued them and won. She feared for journalists in particular, though. “That has a chilling effect on free speech. When you know that you being watched closely, it necessarily impacts how you act with others.” Boghosian said. She made it clear that she was afraid of a country where a reporter could be arrested and trialed for espionage. This brought to mind Edward Snowdon. I think he’s a hero,” said Boghosian, “he should be allowed back. I think he’s a hero.” Boghosian explained to the audience that many laws are hundreds of years old, and that “if you become unpopular, probably everyone in this room could be brought up on a charge.”

Why won't my insurance company let me transfer our No Claims Discount to a different car/policy?
We have been insuring our Audi with the Co-op, who I've generally found to be reasonable. However, now we have a problem. A couple of months ago we bought a van with the intention of replacing the Audi with the van. But the van needed some work doing on it, so we took out a second insurance on the van with the Co-op, so we could still drive the Audi. At the time, I was disappointed to be told that we could not have a No Claims Bonus on the van, as they said it could only be applied to one policy at a time. But they gave the clear impression that when we cancel the Audi insurance, we could then transfer the NCB to the van. The Audi has now broken down, so we want to cancel its insurance. However, yesterday when I called them, they now said they cannot transfer the NCB to the van as it would be being transferred 'mid-season' to a different car policy. They said they could only have applied it to the van if we had changed the original Audi's policy to cover the van, instead of taking out a different insurance policy for the van. This seems ridiculous. Surely, we are entitled to our NCB?! Why should it matter that it is mid-season or not? I explained that if I cancelled our insurances with them and went to another company, I would be given a NCB on the van so why won't they give it to me. They agreed! I really don't want to change, as I don't trust other companies and the Co-op seem more ethical than others. But this seems so stupid. To get round this silly rule without changing company, I'm thinking of cancelling the van insurance and changing the Audi insurance to the van, ie. do what they said I should have done in the beginning. What do you think?! (Also, is it ok to keep the Audi uninsured, given that it cannot be driven, but is parked on a public road?)""

I received a call like this the day before yesterday and at first I though it was unfinished business from a minor accident i had in June last year in which there were no injuries. This is a scam. Car Insurance Coverage and a DUI Question?
My daughter received a DUI a while back, as she put the car in 'Drive' (instead of 'Reverse') and drove through the side of a restaurant. (closed, thank God!...No people there) She refused the Breathalyzer, and was taken to the ER for about 7 hours. She was given a DUI. This car was titled, registered and insured by me- I am her mother. She is over 30 years old. The insurance has covered to fix the car, but the restaurant has retained an attorney. (I live in SC and have $100,000 property damage on the car) Yesterday, my insurance adjustor called to ask for a release of my daughter's medical records, so they could meet with the restaurant's attorneys and show that she was not drunk. Well, she was drunk, and my daughter's attorney has told me not to release that information, as it is a violation of her rights- she already refused the breathalyzer, etc. Also, she WAS drunk, and this would only release that information possibly to others. Please no rude comments about all of this- I get it! Question: Can my insurance company refuse to pay for my daughter's ER bill ($13,000) AND the property damage, AND whatever else- due to the fact that they are going to decide she was 'drunk.' ??? Is there any way to protect my assets? Specifics would be great, if you know them. Thanks.""

Auto Insurance question...?
If my teen neighbor (with a licence)borrowed my car and he/she wrecked it, would my insurance cover it? If so, why do teens that are driving, have a licence, have to be covered on parents insurance if they are driving their parents car? Isn't the car already covered by insurance? Why do I have to pay insurance on my teen and not my neighbor?""
""Would it be worth going through insurance, pictures?""
Its a 2002 Honda Accord SE 4-door. Lets just they there was an incident, anyways. The rear passenger door is banged in. My issue is, if I buy a replacement, would it be hard to mount the door, are the bolts, just screw on, and the door is already aligned or is there some type of process? The deductible would be $500 with the possibility of higher insurance rates. I could get the door in the same color for less. What should I do through insurance or do it myself, would it be difficult? I have someone who will paint it, if it doesn't match. Supposedly, as far as the Window components are (Regulator etc, they are included in the replacement also) http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a81/oyoki1/Pictures1026.jpg""

Whats a good cheap car insurance for someone with a dui in NJ?
i got a dui 3 years ago and need car insurance for both my girlfriend and i. i would like the insurance to be under my girlfriends name and me be covered under his... anyone have any advice on cheap car insurance with someone that has had a dui?
Why do we need car insurance or why is it required?
I've been driving for about 3 years now, and I honestly cannot help but ask why are we paying $100 per month or more on car insurance, and some of us don't even get into accident at all? I mean that is like money out the door. My current premium is $625 per 6 month and it is a pain to pay it off. So, what I suggest if you get into an accident you are required take out a loan if you cannot pay and pay it yourself, wouldn't that make more sense? Instead of having to pay all that money off and in return you get nothing?""
Is the premium the only determinant of how much your health insurance costs?
Does the deductible matter? Does a possible subsidy change things? And most importantly, are you taking into account what you would have to pay out of pocket for things your junk plan does not cover? In the long run, even if your premium goes up but you get better coverage, you will save money.""
Looking for cheap full coverage?

Will my car insurance go down when i turn 18?
I got my license when i turned 16. I was driving a 2001 mustang. Within 6 months i got into a car accident. Long story, but wasn't my fault so don't judge me because i'm not some stupid teen who was handed a mustang and went around speeding and wrecked. I'm not like that. I was raised way better than that. Anyway... Now i'm about to turn 18 and i'm still under my parents insurance. I was wondering if my insurance will go down when i turn 18.""

My car insurance in RI?
I have car insurance in Rhode Island and my son lives with me. When I went to lower my coverage I found that my son had been included in the policy as a driver. I do not let him drive my car at all and they said that since he is licensed and living with me he is automatically included in the policy. This sounded to me as so much hogwash and I hope that someone can fill me in on this weird rule.
