If you have mysterious chronic pain and have the means, here's a list of doctors you should see other than your primary and a rheumatologist:
Neurologist and/or sleep specialist
Pain management doctor (also sometimes called pain and spine doctor)
Therapist that specializes in helping physically disabled people (having chronic illness sucks and you need someone to talk to)
Psychiatrist (most people with chronic illness also need psychiatric meds)
Physical therapy or rehabilitation center that specifically has procedures for chronic illnesses. My chiropractor acts as this for me but I'd only recommend that as a last resort. If you have something like fibromyalgia or ehler dahlos syndrome you need to be very careful with how you stretch and how much exercise you do. My chiropractor has special exercise equipment that is very gentle and has a lot of padding to reduce pain.
ENT (Ears, nose, throat doctor)
Nutritionist
A primary care doctor will at most only perform blood tests. Many illnesses do not show up on these blood tests. You want to get checked for rheumatoid arthritis, lyme disease, and lupus. Even if your doctor tells you it's because your vitamin d level or iron is too low, I would still recommend further testing.
They'll most likely refer you to a rheumatologist regardless, but unless you actually have arthritis I wouldn't rely on them too much. Mine charged too much for a 10 minute appointment where all she did was give me meds and would not discuss any other treatment or management options. She also laughed at me when I asked about a mobility device. It might just be I had a bad experience but it seems like those doctors are just given chronic illness patients cause no one else wants them.
You need to get your spine looked at. An MRI is essential. At the very least get an xray of your neck and spine. A neurologist or pain + spine doctor will most likely order one.
Neurologists will check your nerves and brain function. They'll check if your nerves are overly sensitive or unresponsive. You'll get stabbed and shocked a lot.
Pain and spine doctors are the ones who will give you pain medicine. It will not be immediate. They will need to examine you (MRI) and try other medications and treatments first. This is because insurance is not going to pay for stronger drugs until you've exhausted other options. You'll most likely start with something like duloxotine, gabapentin, prescription NSAIDs, and/or muscle relaxers. Once my results came in from the MRI I was given steroid shots in my spine. They will give them in different spots first to see which spot is most effective, so don't worry if it only works one time and not the others. I cannot stress the importance of having this type of doctor on your care team. Being able to have the power to manage my pain has helped so much. This is also the doctor that signed my form for my handicapped parking permit.
Sleep studies are expensive, but sleep is extremely important for your quality of life. So many people have sleep apnea and don't know it. CPAP machines today are really quiet and comfortable. This will be essential for tackling chronic fatigue.
An ENT doctor is only if you end up having sleep apnea or have any issues with your sinuses. I had to go and get my nose fixed because even with my cpap I still wasn't getting enough air.
You need to have some way of moving your body. Only do this after you are already on a treatment plan. It's hard to do things like exercise when you are still dealing with pain and fatigue. Doctors will want you to do physical therapy first but that's not a good idea because you won't stick with it due to pain. You need to deal with the underlying problems before working on stuff like exercise and nutrition. Able bodied young people who don't exercise and don't eat well are not in constant pain, so you shouldn't be either. If they tell you to lose weight drop the doctor, that's a cop out response.
I haven't reached the step to get a nutritionist, but changing what foods you eat and when can really help with pain management. You also may find that something you eat is exacerbating your symptoms.
With my insurance plan I can pretty much call up a doctor and make an appointment without a referral. I know some plans need referrals, so either call your insurance for one or get your primary care doctor to give you one. Idk how this works for medicare but I think you can just make an appointment with anyone who takes medicare.
I have not been able to obtain a script for a mobility device from any of my doctors. If you have a type of doctor you'd recommend for that please chime in. I've heard occupational therapists are the way to go though but still need to look into that myself.
Also do not feel bad if you cannot afford these. It is not your fault. Healthcare especially in the USA fucking sucks. This is mostly only useful for people who are in the investigative stage who have insurance. I'm not saying "oh just do yoga". Your pain is not your fault, and it can take a long time to figure out a plan that's right for you. I didn't know what doctors I was supposed to see when I started out, and was just given to a rheumatologist since there isn't a fibromyalgia doctor. I only had blood tests at that point. Hopefully this helps people save time and make sure they can fully investigate the cause of their pain (or at least how to manage it better)

2020: Resolutions [Goals] and Consistency
Tumblr media
So - I guess as a pseudo-health blog, I should post something about my goals for 2020. I do think, however, that I need to start with what has been accomplished.
2019 was a pretty fantastic year for me; family, work, and health wise. I hit so many of the goals that I didn’t really set and still have the drive to want to continue bettering myself. I never really set a weight loss goal (aside from the ones required in my different fitness tracking apps) and focused less on the number on the screen, and more on the numbers being produced by my doctors. I dropped a significant amount off of my overall cholesterol, right along with the weight that I dropped.
I also lost a few inches, which was really neat to see. None of my pants or shirts fit anymore, and some of those just a bit too tight shirts, finally fit without a problem. It was really motivating; and as vain as I seemed sometimes, I enjoyed looking at the progress I was making in the mirror too. I get plenty of shit from my friends about my shirtless self pics too.
So - what does that mean for 2020? Where do I go from here when it comes to continuing my journey to health? I mean - I’ve only had this blog for a month, I can’t be done with it already, can I? Here are my realistic goals for next year.
Consistency:
This, in itself, could be my one and only goal for the new year. It has nothing about hitting specific milestones on my weight, strength, or appearance (while all of those milestones will be tracked in some way shape or form) but more about making sure I don’t stop aiming for those milestones.
Everyone knows the January Gym Rush where people decide they’re going to get their lives on track. But what happens after a couple weeks? 75% of those people stop. Too hard. Too little immediate impact. One of the books I referenced a while ago, The Slight Edge talks continuously about how important consistent behaviors are. I’ve taken that to heart in a way. The idea of compound interest in the actions that I’m doing. I probably won’t be able to see the immediate effects of what I’m working on; but in 6 months I might. And just image what I’d look like in 6 years!
So instead of saying: “I’m going to hit 145lbs” or “I’m going to triple my squat max” (both of which I’m actually working specifically toward this year) - I’d rather say: “I’m going to continue working on those goals, all the way through the year. Even if I don’t reach them.”
Read More:
I have plenty of friends that are upping their number-of-books-read goals for 2020. Since college ended in 2007 - I’ve read... all of 2 books. And one was this year. Reading isn’t a big thing for me, but getting back into an interesting topic (The Slight Edge) really got me back into the swing of things.
I’ve already earmarked Brown, White, Black and The Blue Zones - both of which I’m reading with other people, for my first two books of the year. Good possibility that they’re my only two books of the year; but hey - I’ve double my 2019 numbers!
Happiness:
I mean... I’m pretty happy. I’m generally a pretty positive guy no matter what. So what does happiness mean on a 2020 goals list? I means enhancing it. No one is happy all the time. I’m fine with that. But what makes those happy moments really happy? How can I really focus on those times when I’m feeling good, and get the most out of them. How do I manage those times when I’m not feeling quite as happy?
I’m off of it already (great consistency right?) - but I’m going to dive back into Five Minute Journal again, and start writing. Even if it just means what I’m grateful for from the day. That’s a start.
Quarters of Health, or SMART!
[This section was edited prior to post, with credit to Amanda Frayeh with the perfect acronym to add to this! Have I mentioned her Yoga for Athlete’s courses yet?] While consistency and non-goal goals, are great - it is nice to have some of those milestones to aim for, and measure agains. I’ve shared a couple already.
Number of books.
Triple my max squat.
Hit 145lbs weight.
But - while those are nice numbers, I’ve also found that it’s really helpful to break those goals down into manageable chunks. Not only does it make some of those huge goals seem attainable, there are some check in points along the way to make adjustments when needed. I’m aiming for quarterly check-ins with myself. So what does that mean?
Number of books
My goal is to finish The Blue Zones by Feb 1.
Triple my max squat.
Find my current max squat.
Add at least 50% more weight by the end of my 10 week strength class.
Hit 145lbs weight.
Do I actually need this? Probably not, but it’s a nice number within my digital scale app.
An even BETTER way to think about this, is something that my friend Amanda suggested. Here’s her explanation for the best way to hit your 2020 goals:
SMART:
Instead of setting resolutions, set SMART goals! There's a reason why I asked my sport psychology students to memorize this acronym for exams. It's because SMART (Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic, & Time-Based) goals actually work! Whether you want to set goals related to exercise, sport performance, nutrition, or self-care, the process of writing down your SMART goals for 2020 will help you identify actionable steps for success. Other goal-setting tips include:
Set short-term goals for "small wins" en route to longer-term goals.
Write your goals down in a visible place.
Make it a habit to do a goal-related task everyday, even just for 5 minutes.
Track your progress with an app, activity monitor, or ol' fashioned journal.
Slip-ups and plateaus happen- be kind to yourself and be flexible. Take stock of what's not working and modify as needed.
Reward yourself for progress. Post-race brunch, anyone?
Share your goals with at least one accountabilibuddy. Social support from friends, workout buddies, teammates, etc. will help you achieve your goals and have more fun along the way!
There you have it. 4 goals. Specific, yet open ended. What are your goals or resolutions for 2020. Heck - for the next decade?

Eliana DuPres After arriving at the hospital, it would take two rounds of contractions and pausing there in the parking lot before they would make it into the elevator to the fourth floor where labor and delivery was located.  From the elevator to the desk, it was another round of contractions where the two would be forced to pause in the hallway as her arms were drawn around his neck and her entire body weight was there at his shoulders as he held her up until the completion of the contraction while her teeth laid into his shoulder.  The pain was intensifying and had been since she had gotten off the sofa in their apartment, each one bringing on another wave of pain the other had not quite reached, leaving the simple tensing of her hand in his not to be enough anymore as it had to be deflected somewhere and in the given position, it had been his shoulder, never denying her bite from him, though this time for different reasons entirely.
Once they were checked in, a wheelchair was brought to her, finally giving the man a bit of relief, taking her to a room that would serve as her delivery room where she was transferred into a bed and an i.v. line was started right away.  Everything was happening quickly and within just minutes, her doctor would arrive on the floor.  A brief exam would find her at only four inches, enough that she would need to remain on the floor and not be sent home as she was truly in labor, but not enough to deem the administration of an epidural.  'So we'll aim for the epidural around 7, as then it won't be likely to slow your progress...' the doctor began, much to the dismay of the woman who had already been in more pain than she thought she could handle.  "No, I need something now.  I can't keep doing this.  It feels like he's ripping me apart from the inside."  Attempting to explain, it was nothing the doctor hadn't heard before, though he had her best interest at heart here.
'Miss duPres, if we do this now, what might be a four hour process could easily turn into an eight hour as the moment we go this route, yes, you won't be in as much pain, but it will take far longer.  These contractions you are feeling now are preparing the way for your son.  With each one, you will dilate a little further and so the strength of these contractions are actually needed.  How about I'll make a deal with you.  You get to five and we'll see how you feel then and if you still want that epidural then, we'll have an anesthesiologist on hand at that time, ready to go.'
Hearing the compromise, she'd agree to it, but only because she didn't want to be at this for eight hours.  She wanted it to stop.  She wanted their son to be there in their arms and for the pain to just be gone entirely.  As the doctor left the room, she and Zach were there together to find their way through that next centimeter that would result in tears falling from the woman's eyes, her nails embedded in her own palm, in Zach's, in anything she could reach as the power of those contractions was almost more than she could handle.  Finally at four and a half centimeters, she was on the call button, demanding that she could wait no longer as her pain was visible and undeniable.
The doctor agreed reluctantly, warning again that it may slow progress if administered too soon, but it was hard to deny the woman with the strength of contractions she was registering well over 125.  'She's in a lot of pain.  More than she should be,' the doctor confessed quietly to the anesthesiologist as he entered the room.  'Let's go ahead and give her a full dose with the ability to self inject beyond this point.  He's a big guy and she's going to have a hard time here,' he stated, to which the specialist understood as soon as he saw the tiny frame of the woman and the man that stood towering over the bed to her side.
Within twenty minutes, she was laid back in the bed once again with a line into her spine where the medication was directly injected with a button there to her side.  The specialist explained that she could hit that button just as many times as she needed to and the machine would monitor just how much medication she could have, but each hit would give her some additional relief.  The initial dose had been strong, rendering her asleep for four hours without waking a single time.  She slept through two vaginal exams.  She slept through every nurse coming in to check on her and Zach.  She slept through the screaming in the room next door where a natural child birth was in its final hours.
Evening turned to night and night into the morning of her birthday where she knew she would be meeting their son on her own birthday, sharing something with him she never could have planned, yet as the day drew to its end, she was still only at eight and a half centimeters, finding the warning of the doctor to be true as the woman faded in and out of sleep, not complaining of any further pain as she attempted drugged conversation with her fiance that would never seem to actually have a point.
Just after 11 p.m. on November 10, she felt an intense tightening in her lower abdomen with a monumental pressure she couldn't sleep through.  A groan passed her lips as she sat up further in the bed, one hand on her stomach while the other was finding that button.  The strength of the contraction was monitored by the nursing staff at the nurse's desk where the nurse was prompted quickly into the room as it hit heights that would speak volumes to the medical professional who was quickly grabbing for the phone at the wall while making adjustments to the bed to convert it into a delivery table.  'Doctor Hayes, Miss duPres is ready.  Reading at nine and these contractions aren't dying down.'
A moment later, a button was pressed and ceiling lights were shifting down as the nurse explained.  'Miss duPres, you are now at nine centimeters which means this little guy is just about ready.  So while we wait for Dr. Hayes to make it back to the hospital, we are going to go ahead and prep the room for your son's arrival.  There are going to be a lot of people in and out for a few minutes, getting things ready, but just try to remain calm.  You've still got a little longer and you go ahead and press that button if you need a little relief, but it's going to be a lot of pressure.  What I need from you is to breathe through the pressure and not to push against it.  If it gets to a point where you feel you absolutely must push, you tell daddy here.  Dad, you'll just need to press this button on the side of her bed and an alarm will sound for us.  Or you can simply open the door and call out at that point if you feel the need to.  But we are all going to be ready and this little guy is almost ready, but staying calm is going to be key here for just a little bit longer.'
As the nurse spoke, carts were brought into the room with tools, one that looked like a scale, one that had lights overhead that would be the baby's in the first moments after birth.  The lights were lowered and the bed's end was lowered to expose the stirrups that would be used in delivery.  Eliana's eyes were watching, taking it all in, feeling the anxiety of everything happening at once as she watched the chaos in the room suddenly go silent as the last nurse left the room looking entirely different than it had five minutes ago.  Looking over to Zach, she shook her head softly, tired though she had slept so much, now having been in labor for well over twenty-six hours.  There was fear there in her eyes as she looked up at him, her hand finding his where she wasn't trying to squeeze the life out of him for once.  "I'm scared," she finally confessed in a whisper, not keeping from him her feelings as everything started taking place, though her fear was just as much based in her own exhaustion as it was anything else as she held to the man who had been her strength throughout thus far.
Zachariah Wolf "The worse is over." He'd remind her as she mentioned being scared as both of them were. Yet, only one of them had to pass a baby. None of this has gone as to he expected. All of this had backfired most base human expectations but he somehow felt closer to her for it. Though he wished he could have eased the burden with something greater than backrubs and ice chips. As he watched her, he'd attempt to keep her attention from what was going on to her feet. Seated at the stool beside her as his free hand slid over the back of her wrist of the hand in hers. Rubbing over her forearm gently. Realizing he was seeing what was to be the reason this one was going to be an only child. How his mother had done this with two babies was still an absolute miracle. "And...I think you've earned your naming privileges. Whatever you want for this, I'll agree with." He stated, handing in his chips.
Eliana DuPres As he sat there beside her, being her constant through every hour of the already long labor, reminding her that they were in the home stretch, she drew a slow breath as she felt the pressure the nurse had spoke of as it intensified within enough so that it felt as though it could be hurting their son in some way. She had heard so many times that this part was only a minute in the grand scheme of things and that she'd forget this pain once she held their son, but in this moment, in the middle of it all, she couldn't imagine it to be true. As he spoke, she looked to him, hearing those words and feeling the weight of them as he gave into her entirely in a matter she'd never hoped to win. "I still want to name him after his father," she offered quietly, biting her lower tier a moment later as the tension within seemed to reach levels it had not before, her discomfort at an eleven on a scale of ten. "Although I feel like I should say something insane like Elariah or some shit," she offered, a tinge of humor still left in the woman, yet how she was not sure.
Zachariah Wolf "I realize." He concluded, as he had given her his green light. After hours of labor, it was the least he could do. Not even doing much it giving his consent on the matter though his misgivings were known as she well knew. Hardly deserving as that deserved a legacy to live up to for which he had none. A bloody history for a useless cause that he had to try to forgive himself for everyday. Being brainwashed into mass murder and praised as a hero for it. A shake of his head at the mention of her name attempt. "Please no. That sounds like a wizard..."
Eliana DuPres Hearing his reaction to her attempt at combining their names, she'd know of no other way to manage it without doing it with her own first as anything ending in ana would surely not fit their son. Feeling as though the task of giving a person a name was the hardest thing she'd ever done in her lifetime, the only way it felt right was to give him a name with a meaning behind it, of the man that saw her for so much more than she ever was and continued to show her just how much she meant to him. Her hand tensed there in his as the power of the contraction took over, feeling more than just pressure as she fell silent, suffering there before him as she had been off and on for well over a day now as the hour drew closer to midnight. She'd never tell him that she'd hoped to share a birthdate with their son and give him his name, feeling it might have made for a beautiful combination of the two, yet as the time of her own birthday drew to a close, she was still only at nine centimeters. Remembering the nurse's advice to breathe, she would do just that as best as she could as her eyes closed and she focused entirely, allowing her hand to squeeze his tightly as she passed on a bit of that pain to him, knowing all the while that the man could withstand far more than she'd ever be able to deliver.
Zachariah Wolf Hearing her go silent as he knew what that meant by now. The pain had come far more then what she could stomach and she had to close down. Sighing softly as his hand passed up her forearm. "I'm sorry, hun." The man would offer gently, invoking deep empathy genuinely. Watching the approach of one of the nurses once more as she was prepped. At this point, he was as well as he'd sigh low. "I was going to save this for later but..." slipping his fingers into his plaid jacket pocket where he drew out his aviators. "I figured that if you didn't feel real comfortable with them being down there that we'll smack some aviators on them and you'll feel right at home with someone's hands down there..."
Eliana DuPres As his hand rubbed gently against her arm, the gesture was deeply appreciated even if she couldn’t reciprocate it in that moment. As he reached into his pocket, she wouldn’t notice right away until he was pulling out his aviators. A smirk stole her lips, directly followed by a gentle laugh in the midst of pain. The nurse watched on in near amazement at the height of the contraction on the monitor, yet he had her laughing. “I’m still not entirely sure I want to do this,” she confessed, though there wasn’t much by the way of options. “I wish you could deliver him,” she went on to confess, though knowing he was better for her at her side. “I just want to...” she began, ready to say she wanted to just see the baby and have it over before a sudden second wave took her through the contraction, met with a full cry at her lips that would not allow for any question as to how close they were to just that. The nurse was there to her other side, her hand drawing under the gown as she met the eyes of Zach with a smile. ‘It’s time, daddy,’ the nurse offered before reaching over to depress the button that would send everything into quick motion.
Zachariah Wolf "I told you, we'll just connect belly buttons." He reminded her, having shown her enough videos of birthing sea horses to know she knew what he meant. Hearing the nurse, he felt his stomach drop as she called him "daddy." Needing to get used to it though he knew today would be deep in tears for a multitude of reasons. Remembering the last time he was here and all that had gone wrong. Keeping his hands over her arm as he leaned in. Humming softly as he pressed his lips to her hand. "He's going to be so cute though." He reminded her to her hand as his chin lowered to her bed. "As long as he looks like you, that is."
Eliana DuPres As he spoke, she would focus in on his voice and the words he offered her, finding comfort in what he said and in the very sound of his voice as she felt the kiss of his lips to her hand that tightened in his. In the background, the nurse encouraged her to breathe through as the doctor and three other nurses entered in a hurry, but she couldn’t hear the woman in that moment as her source of relaxation was in him. “If he looks like you,” she offered as it was her hope. His name. His looks. She would be entirely satisfied to be simply be the oven as he would need the reassurance of him there in the child’s appearance.
Zachariah Wolf " Just you." He requested, the same request the had made a million times over. Though now the seed was sowed and he was ready. Looking like her, him or anyone else for that matter. Yet, it would serve ironic if the kid came out looking so much like him that such things could never be suspected again. Watching as the nurses entered where he was offering the aviators to one of them. Explaining that she would feel more comfortable if they were at least on her person. She'd agree, placing them atop her head and genuinely speaking a good sport on it. Hand remaining over hers after he had lifted his chin and realizing that it was all finally happening and quick.
Eliana DuPres Hearing those last words from him before people were shifting and her feet were being lured into the stirrups that were drawn from the end of the table, she gripped his hand in hers, not wanting him to leave her side even for a moment as she found a bit of relief from the contraction that had held her moments before. 'We're going to do nice, deep breaths in between here and then as soon as another contraction starts, we are going to go ahead and we're going to push. I will count to three when it's time to push and I'm going to need you to push hard for a solid count of ten, okay?' she heard the doctor ask from between her knees, leaving her to feel like everyone in that room was counting on her to do something here she wasn't even sure she could do. She gave up a nod of her head as a bravery found her from deep within, but the young woman was scared to death as she took that first breath, knowing what was to come and still not entirely sure how it was that she was supposed to push a baby through. Looking up at Zach, she was torn between asking him not to look down there and wanting him to be able to see the birth of his son all at the same time as she didn't want to deprive him of anything here, yet she wasn't sure he'd ever look at her the same way after this. "Is it too late for a c- section?" she asked, though it wasn't medically necessary and therefore wouldn't be an option.
Zachariah Wolf "Yeah, baby." He stated simply as he stood up, guiding the stool back with one of his feet to get him closer to the bed as he got closer towards the top of the bed and by her head as his hand remained to hers. His arm over the top of the bed not far from her head as his arm would curl. Seeing his fingers gently to her scalp as he looked down at her. His attention to her as he'd make his presence known when he did and this was to be his job. The instruction given as he looked down towards her to assure she'd understand.
Eliana DuPres As he confirmed for her that a c-section was now out of the question, she bit against her lower tier as the fear of it all overwhelmed her. Feeling the doctor's hand to her outer thigh, giving a gentle and encouraging pass of the hand that was meant to be relaxing to her, she drew her knees in together at the feeling as she met Zach's eyes as he came in there over her, surrounding her, giving her the best focal point he ever could. 'We're going to need you to part your knees here so we can see what's going on and help you,' the doctor offered, though Eliana would not comply for a long moment. Speaking directly to Zach as the emotion and exhaustion and pain all took root in her eyes, the moisture pooled in the corners. "I don't think I can do this," she confessed with a gentle shake of her head. "I just need to sleep first. Maybe if I had some sleep and then..."
Zachariah Wolf Quickly the nurse would jump up and offer the aviators to the doctors crown in attempt to make her a little more easy to work with. Hearing her speak as he looked down towards her. Lips tightening as he reached down to guide away the moisture at the corner of her eyes. "Hun, this is it." He emphasized on her. "9 months of preparation for a few minutes of action. He's right there." He'd remind her as his eyes glanced down towards the doctor. "And look, it shouldn't be that different than usual." He'd remark, as the man wore his aviators over his cap and attempted to make the most of it.
Eliana DuPres Complete strength radiated from the man in that moment as he reminded her of what this was and how long they had waited and planned for this and that all she'd have to do is help the doctor for just a few minutes and then it would all be in the past. After more than thirty-two hours in labor now, she wasn't sure if she had a few more minutes in her as she just wanted to go to sleep and try again later. As the glasses were placed to the doctor's head, she drew a breath as she gave up the tension there to her knees, allowing her thighs to part for the doctor as her own eyes were back to Zach's once more, giving up a nod of her head where she would agree. 'Alright, Eliana. We're going to go ahead in three, two...' the nurse began, her hand to Eliana's thigh where she'd press her foot against her own chest, giving her something to press against as she'd do her best to help her as she read the oncoming contraction there on the monitor beside the bed. 'one. Push for ten. One. Two. Three...' she began counting. Eliana gripped Zach's hand firmly in her own as she felt him still there over her. Pulling against his hand, she pressed down as a full groan turned into a cry as she focused all of her energy into pushing throughout the entire ten count, feeling the pressure only intensifying. 'Nine. Ten. Alright, good. Good, now we'll breathe again and try in a minute on the next,' the nurse explained as the doctor's hand came in contact with her, his finger tracing the crown of a child's head there in the canal, more than ready for that next wave of contractions. 'We've got the top of his head here,' the doctor offered as the first glimpse of the child was there for the taking as all professional eyes were back to that monitor waiting for the next wave to come on so they could try again.
Zachariah Wolf As she pushed into his hand for that contraction, holding to her as he spoke her through it. The man had led several other men into battle. He knew how to talk in high stress situations as his military training came into play on the most ironic of days. Not even having realized the day, in truth. Too wrapped up in all this as she fell from that contraction. Leaning in as he pressed his lips to the top of her head. "Alright, you got this." Hoping her adrenaline would kick in here as he remained to the top of her head until they'd go again. Squeezing her hand gently.
Eliana DuPres Feeling him there to her head with the press of his lips and the reassurance at every turn, she was starting to almost believe that it was possible as she found herself nearly ready for that next contraction to take her, needing to relieve that intense pressure that had tears streaming down both sides of her face. 'Eliana, you're doing a great job. One more really solid push and we should be able to see this little guy's face . Then it's just shoulders and you are on your way to solid food and a good nap,' the nurse promised as it had been days since the woman had eaten and it had been a constant complaint throughout. She gave up a nod of her head as the nurse found on the monitor what she was looking for, giving up a nod of her own as she started counting backwards from three again.
Zachariah Wolf Pulling his head back to glance down towards her. Lips to her forehead. "You're doing so good." He reminded her as he was wiping away at the fresh stream of tears. Going through something he'd never be able to imagine. "I love you. Just a little bit more." He'd remind her, hand to hers as he brushed his fingers over the top of her head. Inhaling evenly to dissolve his own nerves as required.
Eliana DuPres With the ongoing reassurance and connection there between the two, she would draw in a deep breath as the nurse spoke the word 'three' giving the go ahead for her to push once again, this time with a strong goal in mind of getting halfway there. At first there was silence from the woman as her full focus shifted and there was no room for an ounce of her energy to be wasted here before ultimately the scream passed her lips as she bore down, hearing the nurse say 'nine and ten and... oh, keep on going. Let's go three more. One....' she began again by the instruction of the doctor who was working the head down and through when one shoulder pressed through, leaving a position that would have had both mother and child highly uncomfortable to stay within for even a moment of break. 'Two...' the nurse continued, counting far slower this time as Eliana's hands pulled against Zach's as well as the nurse's, unable to know what was being done below, but pushing with absolutely everything she had within her when the loud cries of the baby filled the space, filling her with the ability to go on for so long as the nurse needed her two. The little one's mouth was suctioned out right away by his nurse as the doctor cradled him in one hand while working his other shoulder with his other hand. 'Push, push, push,' he demanded from there beneath those aviators before all at once all of the pressure had subsided and she was falling back against the bed and Zach's hold, her eyes closed, feeling completely depleted as the sounds of their son filled the space.
Zachariah Wolf As she leaned back against the bed absolutely wasted from the effort, his arm was gently curling underneath of her chin. Lips again to the top of her head as he kept himself right there despite the cries. A little too frozen to process despite they both knew what her effort would bring. Not even daring to look as if he had any reason to fear again as he'd press his lips to her forehead. Inhaling a shaking breath.
Eliana DuPres Feeling him there to her forehead, tears streamed down her face as it had all come to an end and their son was now filling the room with sounds of his presence. ‘Daddy?’ The nurse asked as the doctor held the boy up to show both mom and dad as he screamed. The nurse reached out, offering a pair of scissors to Zach’s hand, allowing him the privilege of severing mother from son between two clips that had been placed.
Zachariah Wolf Hearing the nurse call him and give him the pair of scissors. He'd inhale evenly as he glanced over. Eyeing the screaming little boy placed there whose features were difficult to make out. Yet, a dark head of hair would show that much. Hearing the instruction as he was momentarily dumb struck. Nodding at her instruction as he reached out with the scissors and cut the chord. Handing the scissors back to the nurse as he was cleaned off before them or at least as much was possible.
Eliana DuPres Feeling him draw back from her, she opened her eyes and lifted her head to get a better view of their son as well as the participation from Zach as he cut the cord. Drawing a deep breath as the little one cried at the top of his lungs, only able to think he got it from his dad. Once the scissors were handed back, she laid back as the little boy was wrapped in a blanket and mostly cleaned off before he was being taken to the nearby cart to be weighed and measured as his lungs were clearly functioning well.
Zachariah Wolf Watching as they took him as he'd take a moment to watch still. Drawing back to her a second later as he'd lean into her. Lips to her forehead before finding her lips gently. No words needed to be spoken thankfully because he had none but to thank her.
Eliana DuPres As she leaned back, now unable to see the little one, she watched as his father lingered, promoting a soft smile to her lips as he drew back towards her once again. Feeling the press of his lips to her forehead before the same was offered to her lips, she kissed his lips softly before her eyes were there to his once more. “He’s okay?” She asked softly, her fears there in her voice, needing reassurance that although he was early, that everything was okay.
Zachariah Wolf "Yeah, he's uh...a lot of hair." He'd remark honestly, eyes glancing over where they saw the nurses back working over him. Small, but not unreasonably so. Especially considering him being early as he was sure they were just at the precaution stage. "You did good..." he stated simply, under statement of the year as he'd gently reach for her hand.
Eliana DuPres Feeling his hand there to her own, she was slow to respond as the long labor had taken its toll on the woman as she was entirely depleted. Hearing the baby was alright would be enough to allow a full breath of relief from her as a nurse worked between her legs to get her cleaned up as well.
Zachariah Wolf Knowing what she had gone through, he wouldn't fault her for her response. Bringing her hand gently to his lips as he took a seat for the meantime. Knowing she'd be out long before they gave the go ahead leaving him to his own devices and maybe that was what was needed. Not to mention time with the baby when allowed to really take that all in as emotion had always been a very private matter to the Marine but he was feeling it all the same.
Eliana DuPres Another deep breath later, she was lifting her eyes to him as he pressed a kiss to her lips. “Thank you, Baby,” she offered a moment late, but appreciating his constant support as there was no way she could have done it without him. Giving up a gentle squeeze of his hand before the baby was brought to him, cleaned and wrapped up in a baby burrito. Drawing her hand back, she would give Zach that time first and foremost.
Zachariah Wolf Feeling her draw her hand back as it was taken to the bottom to the head of the blanket. Aiding the transition into his forearms and hands. Looking down into the tired little winded face equally as exasperated from a day and a half of movement. Probably hungry to boot as he looked down into the little face. Tired eyes peering back up at him as he drew the blue blanket deeper into his arms. "Jesus Christ..." he'd breathe softly, a smile breaking from him as his eyes grew a thick layer of mist. "I think you gave birth to a clone." He'd stress with a shake of his head as his resemblance to the man's own baby pictures was terrifying.
Eliana DuPres As Zach was settled in with their son, she kept her head turned where she could watch each moment of this, finding that moisture clouding his eyes through the tears that had settled against her own face. Feeling a nurse there to her side, encouraging her to sit up where the line would be drawn from her back to allow her a bit more comfort, yet Eliana was entirely too focused on that taking place beside her to truly know what was being done to her anymore. “Yeah?” She asked, a soft yet tired smile taking her features as she had yet to get a good look at him. “Let me see?” She requested, lifting her chin slightly but only finding blanket from that angle.
Zachariah Wolf Hearing her request, he'd take that step forward where he lowered his arms under her head to let her get a good look at what she had created here yet not much more could be said on her part considering.
Eliana DuPres As he came closer, she drew a sharp breath at the sight of the little one there in his arms as she brought a single fingertip to the boy’s cheek. “He’s perfect,” she commented as the nurse drew the lower section of the bed up once more, lowering her legs from the stirrups. “Zach...” she whispered, eyes shifting up to his once more. “He looks just like you...”
Zachariah Wolf Drawing down the blanket from his jaw so she could get a good look as the little ones eyes closed. Determined to get some sleep though knowing the calls for hunger would come in no time at all. "Whenever you're ready." He'd remind her, knowing how important it would be for him to bond to her in these moments.
Eliana DuPres Drawing a breath at those words, she wasn’t sure she could fully believe what she saw there before her. As the nurse joined there to her other side, she encouraged that now would be a good time to see if he would nurse if that was of interest to her. She had never been sure, but now, she would know completely. “I think I would like to try,” she offered, eyes up to Zach’s as she gave a nod of her head, ready to hold and attempt to nurse him for the first time.
Zachariah Wolf Nodding gently as this decision was so far out of his realm that he'd never muster more than a neutral response but he'd help her with whatever she needed all the same. Leaning down as his hand found the back of his head. Carefully navigating him into the crook of her arm though it shouldn't be so difficult with the sheer size of him.
Eliana DuPres As Zach brought him to her arm, assuring that support as he managed the transfer, Eliana’s eyes were to the boy right away. Feeling her breath stolen again, her free hand found his stomach where she was completely entranced with the boy for a long moment before the nurse was there to help her. Listening to her instruction, the nurse helped her position the boy as well as her own fingers against her breast, explaining how running her finger against the lower tier of his mouth would encourage that latching motion that would be needed. Within minutes, the nurse would look on, carefully encouraging the little one as his mother learned from her and the boy took his first draw against her.
Zachariah Wolf "I'm gonna' step out for a minute." He announced, as they seemed to be under control there and he simply needed a moment in it all. Guiding himself back and out of the room. Just needing some air from it all as it was all beginning to catch up with him.
Eliana DuPres Looking up towards him as he spoke, she gave up a nod of her head and a soft smile as he suggested the need to step away. “We will be here,” she promised, finding the ‘we’ instead of ‘I’ to be a bit overwhelming but liking the sound of it all the same.
Zachariah Wolf Walking out into the hallway, he knew now to get too far off but he just needed a moment to his own devices. Finding the nearby chapel. While he was hardly a religious man, he knew these places to be mostly devoid of humans and private. Entering where he found one of the pews. Glancing around as the place that did its best to be non denominational but wound up being a conglomerate. An uneven breath as his mind unclouded and came to terms with all that he had seen in those few hours. Still in the same clothes from a few days ago but feeling ten years older. The weight of it all not lost on him. The fact that he did, finally, have a true born son. One that he would not share all his firsts with only to be forced into a bitter realization. That was heavy to the forefront but heavier yet, the fact that his mother wasn't there. Able to feel her in spirit as she wouldn't miss the occasion. But god, did he wish she was there.
Eliana DuPres As he left the room, she took a slow breath, knowing he would surely need to decompress from it all, though it didn’t mean she didn’t want him there with them, yet her understanding went far beyond anything else. Once he was gone, her eyes were back down to the little one there nursing at her breast. Examining and memorizing his features, she finally could take him in entirely, her fingertips gently stroking his cheek as the rest of the staff exited the room, leaving just one nurse waiting to take the baby to the nursery, though not rushing her in the slightest as she found that first bonding moment with the little one.
Zachariah Wolf Knowing the two needed their time regardless, he didn't feel necessarily bad about the prospect of leaving them at it. The two would have their own thing far behind him and it was that bond that would be most important in his life. Proof by the situation the man sat in. Overwhelmed with happiness yet grief all at once because of the same bond that eventually always must come undone. Taking a few more minutes to himself to let himself properly process and release it all. The man would wipe his face on his shirt and stand up. Returning to the scene of the crime where he caught the tail end of her nursing him.
Eliana DuPres Just as the nurse was explaining the signs that the little one was done nursing, she'd see the door opening and Zach entering a moment later. A smile swept her features upon his return as the nurse assisted her in replacing the gown over herself once more while keeping the little one stable. 'Good timing, dad,' the nurse offered as three bracelets were brought from her pocket. A band was wrapped to the infant's ankle before being placed on her wrist and finally Zach's as well as she explained that the bands would sound together in a chime if the child matched the parents and if they did not, there would be a negative sound. Eliana nodded her understanding as the nurse went on to reach for the baby. "Zach?" she asked, not willing to let the little one leave for the necessary testing and sleep until he had a chance to hold him again first if he wanted it. "You want to hold your son again before he goes?" she asked, a soft smile there to her features as the sound of it was completely foreign as all of this was, yet it felt incredible all at the same time.
Zachariah Wolf Hearing 'Dad' for the 38th time in the past hour, he was a moment away from losing it all together before she called for him. The wrist band added as his brows rose. Nodding gently, not sure where he went after this as he approached for the handoff.
Eliana DuPres As he drew in to take the little one from her arms, wanting those few more moments with him before he was to be taken to the nursery for a full check up and evaluation now that his tummy was full and there were no more screams pouring from his lips, Eliana smiled softly as she passed the tiny boy to his father, knowing there was no where he'd be any safer than he was in that moment.
Zachariah Wolf Looking down to the little boy, still finding it crazy that he was there though his mother might disagree. Certainly having done her time in this. Looking down into familiar pictures where it was all still sinking in. Taking several more minutes before the nurse indicated to him that it was time to look after his mom for a bit. Nodding, handing him gently over towards the nurse as he was off to neverland by then.
Eliana DuPres She wouldn't soon tire of watching him there with their son, holding him, looking down at him, seeing the wonder that filled his eyes as he looked upon his own son where there was no room to doubt that he was his. As the nurse took the little one and placed him into a plastic built bassinet, wheeling him out of the room with the promise to return with him in just a few hours, perhaps sooner, Eliana offered a smile and a word of thanks before the door was closed and she was left within with Zach, entirely alone for the first time in a very long time. "Daddy," she whispered, her smile sweeping her features though exhaustion painted her eyes. "I think I like the sounds of it," she confessed, her hand lifting for his.
Zachariah Wolf "El...." he nearly whined at her, needing a break from the daddy thing. Exhaling low as he stepped to the side of her bed. His own fatigue getting the best of him. Taking back his seat as his hand found hers.
Eliana DuPres Hearing the tone in his voice, her smile turned to a smirk as she felt his hand there in hers as a bit of normalcy seemed to find the two. Watching as he took a seat in that chair that was designed so that he could recline in it and share a room with her throughout the next day or so if he'd like, yet she'd feel the bed was far too empty for her liking. "Yes?" she asked with the tone of innocence she seemed to most always hold as she looked over towards him through tired eyes.
Zachariah Wolf "Yeah." Hearing her tone palpable as she was already back to old habits. Watching her eyes to his as he'd shake his head. "I see you, Miss DuPres...speaking of which, I think that doctor is definitely keeping my aviators." He spoke honestly, a shrug of his shoulders as he was clearly taking a souvenir.
Eliana DuPres Hearing him use her last name, she cut her eyes to his as she wasn't entirely sure she'd ever heard him use it before. "Future Mrs. Wolf," she reminded him as she far preferred his over hers, anxious to separate herself from that entire life and name. Hearing him mention the aviators, her eyes widened slightly at the realization. "Yeah... you're going to need those back," she offered honestly before shaking her head. "What in the world made you think of that though?" she asked, finding it to be rather genius now that she wasn't in excruciating pain any longer.
Zachariah Wolf "I have spares." He'd remind her as one pair never lasted too long and it was gone to a good cause. Hearing her follow up her statement with a question, a shrug. "I used my brain? You think I'm hiring writers now?" He'd tease as it wasn't all that clever.
Eliana DuPres Knowing there were spares, she'd shake her head at the reminder. That same response was given to his follow up question a moment later. "No," she admitted, her hand still there in his as she let off a soft yawn before she could continue. "I thought it was pretty genius," she confessed easily.
Zachariah Wolf "Before you pass out." He began, no longer a question of if but when. "What are we doin' about this name?" The question of the hour that would soon be aired their way.
Eliana DuPres Hearing his question, she drew a slow breath as a soft smile graced the corners of her lips. “Zachariah Wolf II?” she asked, forever stuck on naming this child after him. “And if you really don’t want to, I like the ones we talked about before. And add Cassius to that list too,” she added, showing that she had been thinking of other alternatives just in case he really didn’t want to name the little one after himself.
Zachariah Wolf "I'll do it...but...I want him to have a middle name if we do it." He offered, as the only way he could like the name was by adding to it and he'd still get the numeral.
Eliana DuPres Meeting his eyes and the stipulation he would put on the naming of their son, she'd nod her head with a clear smile to her features, though it was tired at best. "Then you choose the middle name, but it can't be Furry," she teased.
Zachariah Wolf "Jasper." He stated simply, quite liking that one and it's meaning indefinitely. "Like the place in Georgia...where my Mama and her mama are buried. She loved it there. It's where she spent the happiest days of her life."
Eliana DuPres Hearing the name and the meaning behind it, she nodded her head as a soft smile took her features. In truth, she loved the name before he even gave a reason, but as soon as he added that to it, her hand was tightening in his. “Zachariah Jasper Wolf II,” she offered for his final approval, still wishing more than anything that she would have gotten to meet his mother and that she could have met this little boy. “She would be proud of you,” she assured him, even without knowing the woman.
Zachariah Wolf "Please don't." He'd ask as she stated her assurance, feeling entirely too fresh in this moment and unable to keep it together. Just ready to break and he didn't need the help. Looking down towards his knees idly as he exhaled a breath. "Have you considered reachin' out to your own family?"
Eliana DuPres Hearing him ask her not to, she’d meant no harm as she only wished to comfort him in something she knew he must be struggling with, wanting to be there for him in both the highs and the lows, but accepting when he asked her to stop. Hearing his question, she shook her head. “You are my family now,” she offered to him as it was her way of rationalizing things ever since she left New York. Her father had lost his rights with her. She didn’t know her mother. As for the parents she grew up with, she was a disappointment to their investment. Deep down, beneath layers upon layers of protection, there were actual feelings on the matter, yet she wouldn’t let herself go so deep. Instead, she knew despite the fact there was still no ring on her left hand, that she was marrying this man and that their son was just down the hall being tested for perfection, and those two were all the family she would ever need.
Zachariah Wolf "Okay." He stated, left there without his own family by no choice of his own while she chose against hers. He'd not raise his protest though she had to know it was there.
Eliana DuPres Hearing him answer so simply, she knew he would have a different take on it all than she did and she’d understand it as such as the two had much different situations and it didn’t make one worse or better than the other, but showed they both had their own sources of pain when it came to family. She’d never ask that he look solely to her and their son as his family, but he now would know that for her, this was her family, this was what mattered. Fuck the rest.
