Hola! I'm Allan and I need help defending myself in court! If you know me at all you may already be familiar with parts of this story;

At the start of the pandemic, my landlord glitched out and lied to the police to have me forcibly and illegally removed from my home (N.B. that I was the only tenant in the house and this was during the first covid-related lockdown/eviction moratorium)

Homeless in a pandemic and in a city embroiled in BLM protests, I was forced to spend thousands, obliterating my savings to find safe places to stay until I could sign a new lease. Sometimes I slept in my office. It was like camping, only with the threat of unemployment instead of bears.

Though it all my landlord was horrendously antagonistic, threatening me, my property, refusing to allow me to retrieve my stuff, and screaming at the police when I acquiesced to her demands for them to be present.

I was able to hire a lawyer and successfully obtained a protective order and an injunction to stop her from acting on her threats to destroy everything I owned, and forcing her to allow me access to move my things. (Some of which she maliciously damaged beyond repair)

I wish that were the end of it, but it turns out she is also attempting to defame me by levying false criminal charges against me.

Unfortunately, I have been unemployed for a while now and while I can't afford a lawyer, the court appointed attorney says there is essentially no case and no evidence against me, but I still have to appear in person or face arrest for failure to appear.

Tickets from FL to Boston are not cheap, as they have to be refundable due to the inconsistency and unpredictability of court dockets. I've already been rescheduled twice and I'm hoping the third time is the charm to finally end this mess.

This wasn't easy to write. I've asked for a lot of help and almost always got it, and I feel the worse for it every time.

I need to buy a refundable round trip plane ticket and secure lodging for 2-3 days in November and prices will only be going up.

“I don’t think I have enough money saved to buy Christmas presents and pay bills this year.” Was what you had said to Steve a month ago.

You’d both agreed to hold off the gift-giving for just this year. But you’d agreed to it so sadly, Steve hasn’t been able to get the upset look on your face out of his head ever since.

It’s easier to imagine the joyful look you had on your face when you’d pointed to the polaroid camera in the window at Percy’s Photography in the middle of town. You’d gushed to him about how you’ve always wanted one but never been able to afford it. And Steve’d be damned if he didn’t get it for you for Christmas. You deserve it.

Now he’s sat on your couch, a few days before Christmas with the box squished between him and the cushion at his back. He’s waiting for you to come back from the kitchen with your drinks and he’s nervous. More nervous than he thinks he should be.

He knows you’ve been down ever since the festive season has begun. The joyful person you usually are around this time of the year is hard to be found and he’s determined to change that.

You come back out and he misses your smile sorely.

“I burnt myself on the milk,” you pout, sitting down next to him, careful not to spill the hot chocolates in your hands.

Steve sits up and accepts his drink. He sets it down next to him instead and takes your free hand into his own. He feels over your red fingertips and you let him.

“Are you okay?” he asks, pushing his fingers into yours gently.

“Yeah,” you sigh, “just stings a bit.”

You sit your own drink down without even sipping it and take your joined hands to your mouth to kiss the back of his.

“Do you need an ice pack?” he worries, letting you press your lips into his skin. He wants to kiss yours instead, but let’s you love on him.

You part from his hand and shake your head, “M’okay. Thank you.” You kiss him once more for good measure.

He lets you shuffle around until you’re comfortable, crossing your legs over so your thigh is pressing into his. Once you’re settled, he thinks it’s the perfect time to pull the gift out. His nerves slowly form into excitement. It radiates from him and feels it’s an injustice next to you where you sit sadly.

“I have a surprise,” he says, interrupting you where you flick mindlessly through channels on the TV.

Your eyes light up just a little and Steve can feel his heart tick faster. You turn so you can face him.

“A good one?” you ask over the rim of your mug. After a sip, you sit it down to give him your full attention.

“I think so.”

You bite your lip, “Did you find some more of the fudgy cookies I like?” you giggle a light, airy sound.

Steve laughs too, reminding himself to find your favourite dessert next time he goes shopping. “No, I think it might be better.”

“Okay.”

He pulls the box from where its corner is pressing into his back, sitting it in your lap. He watches your giddy excitement turn to something like confusion. Still, you’re happy.

You pick the box up and run your fingers over the folds in the wrapping paper. Over the little pictures of reindeer and snowmen.

“Steve…” you murmur, voice too quiet.

“Open it,” he urges gently, nudging your knee with his own.

“What is this?” you ask, flipping the box over in your tender hands.

“An early Christmas present.”

“Steve, I thought we-“

“Yeah, I know. We weren’t gonna get each other presents this year, but I could t help myself.” he rambles, his own giddiness is dizzying.

“Well, what am I gonna get you?” you ask, present completely forgotten. He almost feels a little guilty.

“No, nothing,” he shakes his head until the hair behind his ears falls into his eyes. “Don’t worry about that. Just, please baby, open the box.”

You hesitate for a moment and then move to flip it to unstick the tape from the pretty wrapping. Being too gentle for Steve’s liking. Personally, he would’nt care about keeping the paper intact.

When you can clearly see what’s under the wrapping, your eyes go wide, a pretty smile washing your features.

“Steve,” you gasp, scrunching the paper in your hands. Steve grins almost just as wide as you.

“You like it? I hope it’s the right one, the lady at the store said-“

You throw yourself into Steve’s chest, wrapping your arms around his neck. Falling into him until he lands backwards into the couch. Steve laughs wildly, landing with a happy oomph.

“It’s perfect. I love it,” you murmur into his neck. He squeezes you close as if he’ll be able to hear your happy voice even clearer.

“You sure?” he asks. He genuinely hopes he hasn’t stuffed up.

You squeeze into him, pressing your nose into his hair. You really try not to cry. You love Steve’s heart more than the present in this moment. The gift half-forgotten next to your legs.

“I love you,” you say instead.

Steve stammers, “I love you too, sweetheart.”

You press your lips to his neck, kissing him lovingly. “You’re amazing. Truly.”

Steve laughs madly. “Not as much as you, honey.”

You settle in his lap, more content with loving over your amazing boyfriend then opening the present even more. It can wait.

“You gonna open it up?” Steve asks while you push your head closer to his shoulder.

“In a minute. Wanna sit here for a moment. I’m just really happy.”

Steve’s heart swells, “Oh, sweetheart. I’m happy that you’re happy.”

You giggle against his neck after a beat, “I’m going to take so many photos of you.”

Steve groans lightheartedly, like he’s not already excited. “Not as much as I’ll take of you.”

I actually spoke to a mother and her daughter last week while ringing them up, and her daughter told me Brooklyn is quite affordable - surprisingly enough. Although I'm taking that with a grain of salt, it was wonderful to know, especially coming from someone who lived there for a year. I think it was for an internship. I totally would've swapped LinkedIn with her if her mom wasn't there because I then would've had someone I personally "knew" but wasn't, like, friends with that I could talk to about apartments and stuff. Anyways, so...uh... I'll be looking at that now (as well as other states)! I do want to leave retail but honestly, at this point, if I can even find a good, salary paying job for assistant manager at a clothing store (I swear I've seen it before, and I totally qualify for mid-senior level!) then I'll take that in the meantime while I continue to seek fashion PR jobs. I'll look at internships too, but not for school credit since I already signed up for the alternative course that replaces an internship. Yessss, take that risk! Things will get better eventually, right? I'm all for things not being easy at first. Besides, moving to a new state won't be the most terrifying thing that's happened to me. . . 🙂

The Situation

I've taken care of my disables veteran mother since I was 14. I'm 27 now and I'm really chronically ill from PCOS. I have PTSD and Major Depression because of this I never learned to drive because I was continuously traumatized while trying to learn or when trying to ask to learn. I needed my family's help to get to medical appointments and instead I was treated like an inconvenience until I could no longer work from being in pain all the time. My family kicked me out of the house after I snapped when I told them I was in a lot of pain and to nauseous to eat and they replied with a scoff. My mom called the cops and lied to them telling them I hit her and had me arrested for domestic violence... I've been a pacifist since I was 5 I've never hit anyone except for when I was having severe psychosis because I was unmedicated and undiagnosed. I greatly regret those times even though I have no memory of them. My mom was also pocketing and lying about my SSI. She had me work 3 jobs when I started getting sicker and my body started giving out about a year ago. I had to pause my college classes because of my health and I smoke weed to manage the pain since I can't get to doctors. My pausing class led my mom to tell everyone that I quit school to stay home and smoke weed all day. I work at the college and my campus is my real home. I would rather spend all day in pain on campus at work then stay at home because my real home is my campus. I gave her everything I could. I took care of her half of my life and when I genuinely needed her she abandoned me. I got kicked out in November and I've been staying with a friend. I'm trying to find a place to rent when I can afford to reunite with my cats. I need help with a deposit and some groceries for now. I live in FL and you need a medical card and I couldn't renew mine in time so I can't get medical weed for a while. The semester hasn't started yet so I can't start work yet. I don't want to be short because of the deposit and I want to help my friend with groceries while I'm staying with her because she isn't charging me to stay here even though if someone finds out that I'm here they'll be in breach of their lease and can get kicked out. So one of my first cousins from Brazil is coming to visit soon. But recently she told my mom that she was going to fly in through Miami FL and wanted us to pick her up from there. We live 20 minutes south of the Atlanta airport, which makes Miami a 10-12 hr drive. And if she was European I could forgive this, but she's from Brazil, the largest country in South America, she knows how far apart things can be. Now in the past whenever we flew into Brazil, we would have to land in either Sao Paulo, or Rio, which is like 6 hours from their home state, regardless of which one we chose. So she knows how far apart things can be. I get that she's not American. She's never been here, she speaks a good amount of English but has never actually been in the states. And she also wants us to drop her off at the Miami airport which is a no. Like not gonna drive 24 hours round trip just to take someone to an airport. (We are currently trying to see if she can book a different flight).

What's really funny to me though other than the fact she didn't understand distance, is that she told my mom she wanted to spend a week at Disney and stay in a Disney hotel. My mom didn't even respond. She just sent her a link to the Disney website with the prices. And my cousin was shocked. Brazil is not doing great right now. Everything is expensive and jobs are really hard to find. One of my cousins moved here even though he has a masters degree for being an electrician and still couldn't find a job down there. But despite the fact that everything is wicked expensive down there, They don't have to pay for health care, they don't have to drive cars. And groceries are a hell of a lot cheaper. I honestly think it's going to be a huge shock to find out that things aren't really that much better over here. Like sure the jobs generally pay a little bit more, but our health care is insane and the price of driving a car is even more so. They thought Disney was a thing that every American did all the time. Not a luxury that one might be able to afford once a decade. I'm really excited for her to come over, especially because she was probably the main cousin I talked to when I visited down there. And I'm also very excited to ruin her perception of America. I am going to do everything possible to make sure she realizes what a shit hole this place is. It just has nicer wallpaper.

I would not have even heard of the micro drama 黑莲花上位手册 Go Queen Go if not for the few articles I came across of how it was taken off Chinese platforms for it's 'extreme revenge tactics'. Thankfully (?) you can still view the already aired parts on Youtube and of course I had to go check it out lol. It's very very low budget but I was pleasantly surprise by how pretty the FL was and I'll say her acting was better than some traffic stars hahaha. That said, I also started reading the novel 昭华乱 it was based on and it was obvious the drama cut a lot of characters and side plot lines cos they could not afford hiring more supporting characters. I eventually couldn't get past the cheap looking sets and cosplay-style acting from the Emperor and drop the drama halfway through ... but really that was only 1.5hours of my life, I've wasted more time on worse dramas.

On the other hand, the novel kept me engaged throughout tho' I'm generally not a fan of palace dramas. Maybe cos the FL doesn't have a love line? She's just on a mission to rise through the ranks for herself and does not get swayed by any feelings for the Emperor or trying to help her birth family (in fact she actively plots for their death). Initially it did read like a palace mission game where the main character beats down one obstacle after another and rest of the characters are pretty tropey like the scheming Empress who acts benevolent, or the arrogant concubine with a powerful family that the Emperor placates etc. But eventually it becomes clear that the real 'enemy' was never the women of the harem. No matter how high they rise, they were always playthings and chess pieces of the Emperor seeking to consolidate his power. FL doesn't have a love line, but I enjoyed her friend-line with Ning Wan Shuang (said arrogant concubine) in the later half of the novel... in fact, I would say she had the most moving arc in the story and I might like her a little more than our FL ;)

The only thing I have to pick about the novel is the ending which was such a fairytale that I was laughing and going really???

Song Zhao finally got rid of the Emperor and eventually ruled the country herself when her son expressed his dislike for the role, which fair enough, there were a few female rulers in ancient China. Then the novel went 10 years later ... and Song Zhao managed to overhaul the system/society to grant women equal rights from education, to participating in the imperial exams, to banning polygamy. Besides a few old and corrupt officials, the general public was totally accepting of this because the country was peaceful and rich!

Okayyyyyyyyyy. Looks around the world in 2023 re women's rights.

Oh, and on the 'extreme revenge tactics' point, yea, the novel does not shy away from many, many painful deaths.

Anyway, I finished the novel exactly on the last day of 2023 and it was a fun ride. :)

I just have got to say the HUGE positive from today.

So, the guy I've been talking to since the end of last year. The old friend from high school that's sort of just turned into a whole long distance relationship. Love him to death, he's amazing.

He Sent Me MONEY. I was just sitting there on the phone just venting about the weird situation with my mom and how i couldn't afford my car insurance even with my dad's help without putting us in the negatives. This boy thought about it last night and was basically just assuring me that i wouldn't need to pay him back. Just "I care about you and i really don't want to see you struggling, but we'll figure it out in the morning." And i wake up the morning to my phone ringing with a call at like 10. He just wakes me up to basically say "How in the HELL can i send you money?" And me. Tired. "...I have a routing number." If i was more aware, i probably would've beaten around the bush again and try to convince him otherwise. But no. He wasn't taking no for an answer. And i just woke up, heard i was getting money, and got out bed. We go through a whole damn thing and before i can even say how much he sends me a damn thousand. I ONLY NEEDED $460. This Fucking Guy. Wouldn't take no for an answer and basically wanted me covered until getting that damn online job went through (we're slowly chugging through training shit that'll only get $50 and hoping that we can actually make a wage with it...) But oh my god, i know you've been in love with me since we were 15, but damn. It's greatly appreciated that's for sure.

So, we're talking quiet area with LOTS OF WALKING AREA AND TREES. :D More bonus points: It'd be cheap. It's his mom's property. I'd be able to get a dog and have animals in the house. It's got a nice screened in porch above the carport. It just Sounds Cozy. Let's just hope the neighbors are nice to this strange effeminate man and his butch girlfriend lol (It's FL. I'm not coming out yet. Fuck that. Not there. That's the NO-GO State.)

But ah. Like, my mom's whole thing is more terrifying than I'd like to admit. It's hard to not be scared of it. Like, i feel like she'd finally treat me like an adult and respect my choices of leaving the house and whatever else, but i have the weird feeling it might eventually just feel like I'm trapped again. Sure, it would just be us two. But it'd be me alone with her in a totally new area. I wouldn't know anyone. I wouldn't know the area. It's just scary. So I'm hoping she doesn't outright buy a house. I'm hoping i can have a few months down there. I make sure that i can have a physically close relationship with this guy. I make sure that he's set up in that apartment and i like his family (he says I'd get along with his mom and sister. They seem interesting.) I could easily move in with him. Have a place to ourselves for the first time. Have something that feels more home ourselves. My mom can go off wherever she wants, but i hope she thinks twice about leaving my sister in her college apartment without a landing pad to go home to after college or if she breaks up with her bf. I'm used to moving around. She JUST got there at the start of this semester. I'm scared FOR my sister. At least if I'm there we'd have a couch for her to crash on before likely heading up here to our dad. Like quite literally after hearing our mom was going to go buy a house in TN and sell hers, both of us went crying to him because she's just jumping the gun here without even thinking of us. We may both be adults now, but we're still very much baby adults who are still trying to learn how to live. I don't want her stuck with my whole thing of basically relying on a boyfriend to do anything. But she already is. It's basically been our only choice. We do things ourselves, but we just need somebody with us. Somebody there to help and if it's not her, then it's my dad who's barely scraping by, or our current partner. Hell, if anything happened there, I'd be willing to pull her into a situation when it comes to the plan after having a cooldown period back in the hometown and finding a place out of state that's actually affordable and i won't get harassed for using a public bathroom.

But ah. I feel like something is going right. But I'm Still Very Terrified of all of it. Like i want to give my mom a chance, i really do, but that's a very scary situation. She still talks to her nazi ex-husband. There's still a chance that he'd be around. And there's still a chance that she might just take control over me again. I don't like those chances. I really don't. But at least i have the most damn supportive person with me now.

This is a gentle, effective moisturizer. Within a month of use, my skin’s appearance had improved greatly. I wasn’t dry or flaky anymore, and my skin redness had decreased. One of the nice things about this moisturizer is its flexibility though. It can be paired with other products to boost its effectiveness or provide added benefits. For example, I added a few drops of The Ordinary EUK 134 0.1% Antioxidant Serum each time I used it. You could also pair this with a Vitamin C serum or powder - The Ordinary sells options for both - or a Niacinamide powder. Or you could add a few drops of your favorite face oil. It’s a customizable product.

At the time though, when I was considering whether or not to purchase more, I heard some pretty disturbing things about Deciem’s CEO at the time, Brandon Trauxe. That he had made racist and fatphobic remarks. That his behavior was erratic. I decided to try and find other brands.

Years later, we now know that Brandon Trauxe had some sort of drug problem that was causing his incredibly erratic behavior. After his death, former co-CEO Nicola Kilner returned to the company and has done some wonderful work saving both the parent company, Deciem, and their most popular line, The Ordinary. While Trauxe’s death at such a young age is tragic, it’s heartening to know that Kilner has the company in good hands. I, personally, am no longer opposed to buying from them, but I’ve included some resources so you can make your own decision.

Comps: If you want a gentle moisturizer that’s dermatologist certified, Honest Beauty The Daily Calm Lightweight Moisturizer is a great option. It’s more expensive, but you get the certainty of knowing it’s been tested by a dermatologist to help reduce skin sensitivity and redness.

However, if you don’t want to spend that much, Pacifica Vegan Ceramide Barrier line has both a face lotion and face cream that are also dermatologist certified for gentleness. They also make Coconut Probiotic Water Rehab Cream, which has many of the same ingredients as NMF + HA Moisturizer, but it should be noted that it’s not derm-tested and has fragrance.

Another good, flexible moisturizer is Good Molecules Silicone-Free Priming Moisturizer. This can double as a makeup primer and is gentle enough for daily use. It is also a formula that can be ‘upgraded’ with other actives. For example, Good Molecules Vitamin C Booster Powder can be added for additional antioxidant and brightening effects.

The INKEY List Omega Water Cream Moisturizer is also going to be fairly gentle, although not derm-tested. It focuses on barrier repair through ceramides and niacinamide. As a gel moisturizer, it doesn’t really lend itself to combining with other products.
