Found this wonderful photo of Baby Infanta Beatriz, being held by her English nurse. The date is unknown but judging by Beatriz’s birth year I believe this to be sometime in 1909.

A segment on Queen Amelie’s Diamond Tiara from TVI’s interview with Infanta Maria Francisca.
Tumblr media
The tiara was a wedding gift from Queen Amelie’s father-in-law, King Luís, in 1886. They show a picture of it with the other wedding gifts from the Portuguese royal family all made by the crown jewelers, Leitão & Irmão. On the right is a matching necklace from her mother-in-law, Queen Maria Pia, and on the left is a sapphire and diamond necklace from her husband, the future King Carlos.
Tumblr media
I’ve never seen a picture of Queen Amelie wearing the matching necklace and it was most likely dismantled to create her Diamond Choker Necklace that is still with the former Portuguese royal family. She was photographed on at least one occasion wearing the sapphire necklace but I’m not sure what happened to it.
Tumblr media
Any Portuguese speakers, does the jewelry expert, Eduardo Alves Marques, give any more information or say anything interesting?

ok but how would you sit in glass dress???????
Well, it's glass and silk (only the warp or weft is glass; I forget which), so it does have some movement I imagine.
Here is another glass dress made for the Infanta Eulalia of Spain after she fell in love with the first one. Not sure if that's her modeling it or not:
Tumblr media
So it does fall more or less as non-glass fabric would in the same shape. Not being one of the few people privileged to handle it, I couldn't say how it moves, but it seems like it would only be stiffer than regular silk, not totally rigid.
Sitting might indeed be difficul, or at least something I'd undertake gingerly myself. But the other point is that...the wearer might not be meaning to sit in it at all. It's a formal gown (short sleeves, low neckline), implying that it would only be worn for a few hours at a time. And I've seen people do stranger things for novelty fashion, even nowadays, than spend a whole party standing. Bear in mind also that the Infanta was the only person in the world to privately own one of these gowns- only those two ever existed. It was a bauble intended to demonstrate the Libbey company's prowess with glassmaking at the 1893 World's Fair, not meant to be marketed or sold to the public.
So the answer to "how do you sit in it?" seems to be a combination of "carefully" and "probably a non-issue, since the only person to ever own one was in the social class most likely to stand for an entire party for the sake of a beautiful but impractical dress."

Juana of Portugal (1439-1475)
She was the posthumous daughter of King Duarte of Portugal and his wife Leonor of Aragon. Juana grew up in exile with her mother, due to the intrigues of the Portuguese court, and lived first at the Monastery of Santa María in Medina del Campo and later in Toledo, where Leonor of Aragon died. At the age of six, Juana returned to the Portuguese court of her brother Afonso V.
In 1455 the young Juana married her cousin Enrique IV of Castile, who had repudiated his first consort after thirteen years of marriage. The couple produced no children. The marriage was annulled on the grounds of an impotence that was specific rather than general, an impotence that applied only to Enrique’s relationship with Blanca of Navarre. Yet such an extraordinary  explanation amounted to a case of maleficium (spell), with the clear implication that Blanca was the guilty party, and in addition she was obliged to leave Castile and return to Navarre.
Tumblr media
Juana of Portugal was described as beautiful, cheerful and coquettish. The sources speak of the licentiousness introduced by the young Queen and her ladies in the austere Castilian court. They liked to use perfums, makeups, dresses that displayed too much décolletage, and flirting with men. One of her ladies, Guiomar de Castro, was King’s mistress, causing the anger of the Queen, and other, Mencía de Lemos, was Cardinal Mendoza’s mistress.
Six years after her wedding, Queen Juana was pregnant. Some say it was a miracle, others that it was the result of some sort of artificial insemination that the couple had tried, as was recorded by a german traveler. During this period, Juana insisted that Enrique's teenaged brother and sister, Alfonso and Isabel, forcefully be brought to the court and away from their sick mother. Many saw this as a way of making sure her daughter's path to the crown would encounter no obstacles. The Queen gave birth to a daughter named Juana, officially proclaimed heir to the Crown of Castile and created Princess of Asturias.
Queen Juana planned the marriage between her sister-in-law, Isabel of Castile, and her brother Afonso V of Portugal, and her daughter with her nephew Prince Joao. She wanted with these weddings an annexation of the Crown of Castile with the kingdom of Portugal.
Tumblr media
In early 1460s, Castilian nobles became dissatisfied with the rule of Enrique IV, and believed that Princess Juana was not King’s daughter. They called her la Beltraneja, a mocking reference to her supposed illegitimacy. Propaganda and rumour encouraged by the league of rebellious nobles argued that her father was Beltrán de la Cueva, a royal favorite of low background who had been elevated to enormous power by Enrique and who, by some, has been suggested as Enrique's lover.
Many nobles refused to recognise Princess Juana and preferred that Enrique instead name his younger half-brother, Alfonso as his heir. This was agreed to on the condition that Alfonso marries little Juana. Not long after this, Enrique reneged on his promise and began to support his daughter's claim once more. The nobles in league against him conducted a ceremonial deposition-in-effigy of Enrique outside the city of Avila and crowned Alfonso as a rival king.
Tumblr media
Queen Juana and her daughter were removed from the court. They lived in various castles as hostages, separately or together, protected by a faction of the nobility. The love affair of Queen Juana with the Bishop Fonseca’s nephew, Pedro of Castile, and the birth of her two illegitimate sons, caused great scandal. As a result of the need to conceal the pregnancy of her illegitimate sons, Juana of Portugal is considered the inventor of the farthingale.
In 1468, Alfonso of Castile died and Princess Juana was stripped of her succession-rights. Her aunt, Infanta Isabel, was placed before her, on condition that Isabel marry a man chosen out by the monarch. Queen Juana and her daughter sent a formal appeal to the Supreme Pontiff. Enrique accepted to divorce his wife and send her to Portugal, but Juana remained in Castile as king's wife, though separated of her husband. Isabel married Fernando of Aragon with the opposition of Enrique IV.
Tumblr media
In 1470, Princess Juana was engaged and then married by proxy to the Duke of Guienne, brother of Louis XI of France. In the face of the French ambassador, King Enrique and Queen Juana swore before a crucifix that the Princess was their legitimate daughter. The French marriage never consummated, because the duke died two years later in France. Queen Juana always defended her daughter’s rights to the throne, and she had an active political participation. Queen Juana tried to get the support of nobles and cities, but with meager success and without palpable results. In 1474, Enrique IV died at the Alcázar of Madrid and rumors circulated that the late monarch had been poisoned, his wife and his daughter demanded an investigation. Queen Juana died a few months after her husband’s death at the age of 36. In the last months of her life, she lived at the convent of San Francisco in Madrid. The cause of her death is unknown.

Council of the Olive Grove: Or the Very Terrible, Miserable, Exhausting Two Weeks of Stephania al-Khatib.
Tumblr media
When the indomitable and respected Queen Cecilia dies mysteriously during an international council, her lady-in-waiting Stephania al-Khatib is tasked with the duty of rooting out her murderer and securing the succession of the throne. But with the queen's eldest son missing and her remaining children scrambling to topple one another, accomplishing either goal becomes nearly impossible.
Inspired by the conflicts of the early medieval Iberian Peninsula, Council of the Olive Grove is an adult fantasy novella full of family drama, court intrigue, strange gods, witches, lgbt+ characters,  and a colorful cast full of political schemers. AND I actually have a chunk of it written so it now counts as my late nano project.
Notable Characters
Countess Stephania al-Khatib Lady-in-waiting and granddaughter to Queen Cecilia. Estranged from both father and husband, well-traveled, well-read, and woefully nocturnal.
Prince Nicholas of Evoga The missing heir apparent, has been busy traveling the world since before his mother’s death and no one currently is sure where he is.
Infanta Zahra al-Khatib The unlikable but well-connected second oldest of Queen Cecilia. Her husband is advantageous and cutthroat.
Queen Patricia of Gavrisk The recently widowed daughter-in-law of Queen Cecilia. Due to the nature of the tragic death of the queen and her second son in the space of a few days, there are some who fear Queen Patricia will take the opportunity to put her own claims above the al-Khatib dynasty.
Richardis Falkenstein A foreign lesser noble and Prince Nicholas’ wife. Principal lady-in-waiting to Queen Cecilia. Chilly demeanor and keeps busy with sewing.
Infante Hakam Queen Cecilia’s youngest son. Very close to his mother, recently gifted a duchy but leaves much of the duties to his wife, and decently charming.
As said in the header, the story takes over a two week period and I’m hoping to keep the word count around 30k.

Hey do you remember how a million years ago I came across a portrait in Wikimedia labeled as being Princess Luisa Carlota of Bourbon that I believe is actually Ludovika of Bavaria? Well back when I was looking into that I needed to know the eye color of Luisa, so I searched for other portraits of her and in all she had brown eyes, except for this one in Wikimedia:
Tumblr media
This miniature was made by Pietro Nocchi in 1823. The source of the picture was the auction website Cambi, where the painting was auctioned in 2015. This is the description of the item (automatic translation from Italian, emphasis by me):
Famous painter from Lucca, Pietro Nocchi worked as a portraitist for Elisa Baciocchi and her court; from 1812 he directed the Institute of Fine Arts of Lucca. With the Restoration he continued his activity for the Bourbons, both in large and small formats. Maria Luisa Carlota of Bourbon (Barcelona, 1802 – Rome, 1857), daughter of Prince Ludovico I of Bourbon and the infanta Maria Luisa of Bourbon-Spain, is portrayed here at the time of her marriage to Duke Maximilian of Saxony, which took place on 15 October 1825 by proxy and on 7 November in person. An engraving published by Comandini (L’Italia nei Cento anni del secolo XIX, Milan 1900-1901, p. 109) dated September 1825 and derived from this important portrait bears the inscription: “P. Nocchi made from life; R. Marsili lit.”. Another precious miniature signed and dated “Pietro Nocchi, 1818”, which portrays his mother, Maria Luisa di Borbone (1782-1824), Duchess of Lucca, is preserved in the Sinigaglia collection at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan, while a small portrait of Carlo Ludovico, Duke of Lucca (1799-1883), initialed “P.N.” it is included in the Ceci collection exhibited in the Royal Palace of Pisa.
I tried my look and searched for L’Italia nei Cento anni del secolo XIXI on the Archive, which thankfully came forward. Here is the engraving:
Tumblr media
That's not... that's just not the same picture. The engraving doesn't look even remotely similar to the miniature. Just in case I went through the whole year of 1825 page by page, and I could not find any other image of Luisa. So this is must be the picture the auction site is referencing. Which again, bares no actual resemblance to the miniature they sold as being Luisa: not the hairstyle, not the dress, not the jewelry, not the sitter's pose, not anything. Also the engraving is clearly not even from the time of her marriage, since those giant sleeves only became fashionable in the 1830s.
Does this means the girl in the miniature isn't Luisa? I don't know for sure, but I really hope the auction site didn't base their identification on the engraving alone, because in that case...

For the coronation usually monarchs don't attend, but what about countries like Spain? They don't really have a heir of age that can attend and sending a former king and queen isn't a really good look...Or like Japan, Naruhito is an emperor and he outranks a king, but there are rumours that he at least will attend, so do you think that everyone will throw the "rule" out of the window and attend such a big party? hahaha
Yeah, I think the rule isn't as strict as people make it out to be and I'm not as sure as I was about who will be attending the coronation.
First there's the countries that are part of the Commonwealth and monarchies in their own right (Brunei, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malaysia, and Tonga) most of which sent the monarch not the heir in 1953. I would not be surprised if they did the same this time around. There are also more countries following the Dutch example of the monarch abdicating as a form of retirement so former reigning monarchs are in the mix in a way they weren't before.
Then you've got the young heirs. For Spain I think it will either be Queen Sofia or Queen Letizia. My dream would be for Queen Letizia to accompany Infanta Leonor since she's underage but both of them go. I wouldn't expect her to wear a tiara or anything and I know it's not going to happen but I can dream. There's also the heirs that are technically of age but still pretty young like Princess Catharina Amalia of the Netherlands, Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, and Prince Moulay Hassan of Morocco. I can't imagine being 19 and attending an event like this on my own. Are they going to send someone else with them or send someone else entirely?
Now we seem to have other sovereigns saying that they are planning on going. I was surprised when Prince Albert told People that him and Princess Charlene would attend because at the last British coronation Prince Rainier III sent his father, Prince Pierre, as Monaco's representative. I was expecting Princess Caroline to go but I'm hoping this means Princess Charlene will finally wear a tiara at a royal event.
A couple of weeks ago there was an article in Aftonbladet where Margareta Thorgren, the head of the Swedish Royal Court's press department, seemed to say that King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia are planning to attend the coronation. I assumed that something got lost in translation but now I'm not so sure. They use kungaparet which means the king couple not kronprinsessparet which means the crown princess couple.
In Sweden, kings are no longer crowned, it started when Gustav V refrained from the ceremony. In Great Britain, on the other hand, Prince Charles is crowned on May 6 in Westminster Abbey. That the coronation will be as spectacular as when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, was crowned in 1953 is not likely. But the Swedish royal couple will be there. That is the plan, says Margareta Thorgren.
I didn't see the rumors of Emperor Naruhito attending but now that I read back how Prisma translated this article it does kind of sound like that's a possibility.
Tumblr media
So I'm just really not sure about who we're going to see at the coronation.

Got a little inspired by the coin situation and took a break from the long next chapter to bring you this (I hope you like this hilarious and comical prompt) takes place later on in the story. Had so much fun with this!
The art of a (coin)cidence (WOTC Timeline)
Sofía couldn’t help but gawk as she peered over her sisters shoulder, taking in the piece of silvery coin that was meant to celebrate her sisters recent engagement and upcoming wedding.
All in all the coin wasn’t badly shaped, it rim was tidy and clean, its edge’s perfectly beveled. The two family crests side by side looked divine, an urging by both kings as they wanted to show the world how United these countries were by this royal match. The first ever in royal history.
Sofia moved her hazel eyes to her sister, who as slays remained stoic, yet Sofía knew her sister was deep in thought, her brows were slightly pinched. Her blue eyes stuck to the bottom side of the coin, a puzzling look on her features.
Leonor immediately took Sofia’s hand, moving her to the edge of the room, something akin to a smile and frown on her features. Sofia couldn’t help but crack a smile, given that there was nobody else in the room, yet her sister had pulled her to the side as if the room were full of prying people.
It took Leonor a second before she found her words. But when she did she couldn’t help but crack a smile.
“Is it just me or does the left side of the coin look…misleading”.
Sofia chucked at that, holding a hand to her mouth.
Leonor’s smile quickly faded into a chastising look, “sofi it’s not funny!! Now Ali will be troubled all week!! She’ll simply freak if she finds out”.
“It’s just one coin Leo. I’m sure many will follow. It isn’t the end of the world because the mint got her nose wrong”.
Hazel eyes meet the silver coin again and this time the infanta spoke. “Correction it’s the whole face. Did they even do a measurement! Or use a photo? They have a corridor full of portraits from her childhood! This looks like it was done on a napkin after lunch break!”.
The sudden movement of the grand doors opening made both sisters look up, taking in the royal mint team and an already hesitant vologarian princess trailing behind.
“Your royal highness! Lovely to see you here! I see you already have seen the coin? I hope it is to your satisfaction. Our team worked effortlessly on it”.
Exchanging pleasantries the team went right to work, moving the coin under a magnifying glass and cleaning it before the final presentation.
“Well Alix already looks on edge. Let’s hope this won’t trigger any German aggression” Sofia joked. Leonor only eyed her sister, a blank face on her features.
She could practically hear her fiancée’s rebuttal already, “I may speak German but I am not! We border the country!”.
Cotton blue eyes moved to take in her soon to be wife, who was still positioned outside the room, St. John beside her and volograds Prime minister on hand. From the looks of the conversation Alix was less than pleased. Her green eyes were downcast and her face tired.
Alix had taken up many engagements this year, from her first tour of the West Indies, to her first charity foundation. She had worked ruthlessly and successfully. Her polls shad been up 30% this week, now taking the title of the most popular member of the family.
With a bow and a smile prime minister Havel was gone, leaving Alix and St. John alone in the hall. St. John uttered a word and Alix smiled, that bright and earth shattering smile that made Leonor weak in the knees.
“Can you stop eying your fiancé and focus on the fact that this coin needs to go back…now” Sofia piped up.
The words seemed to go out one ear and into the other.
Alix entered the room, confident as always, a pep in her step as she eyed Leonor, her charming smile seeming to take over her tired features.
Leonor without thought flew into the girls arms, holding tightly and giggling when Alix picked her up off the floor for a split second.
“I’m sorry for my delay meine Liebe. St. John took a less crowed route” Alix spoke. Her hands cupping Leonor’s cheeks like a precious jewel.
Leonor only shook her head, her cheeks flushed and eyes filled to the brim with adoration.
It wasn’t till Sofía cleared her throat that both girls focused on the matter at hand.
To say that both Borbón girls were anxious when Alix eyed the coin was an understatement. Sofia held tightly to Leonor’s hand, Leonor watched every movement.
From Alix’s pale face to her secretive look to St. John across the room. It was obvious to anyone that the vologarian princess was not happy with the result.
“Well what do you think you’re royal highness?”
All eyes were on Alix. The girl quickly schooled her features. “I-I-“
Immediately Leonor moved to take Alix’s hand, wrapping a calm arm around the girl.
“I think it is just splendid. I do wonder if it is truly as lifelike. Perhaps a second opinion before you send it off?”.
If the men were offended they didn’t show it. “Of course your royal highness! We will send it off to king Cyril. He will do a once over and send the feedback. These coins will be made available to the vologarian public next week and hit the Spanish shelves the week after. Thank you for your time”.
As soon as the men were within a reasonable distance Alix spoke, calmly at first.
Running a hand through her raven strands, a nervous habit.
The green eyed girl turned to both sisters, a pensive almost shocked look on her features.
“Was it in my head or does my side profile truly look as ghastly as what is represented on that coin?”.
Leonor immediately moved to settle her hands firmly on her girlfriends waist. “It’s not nearly as bad as you think my love. You heard them there sending the coin to your father. He will make sure you’re represented as perfect on that coin as you are in real life. They’ll make your little nose straighter, and your perfect lips fuller”.
Soft fingers trailed down the girls lips, her nose.
Alix without thought moved to wrap her hand around the girls fingers, bringing it to her lips for a soft reverent kiss. Stealing the breath out of the blondes lips.
Then without thought the girl was gone, walking down the hall, determination on her features.
Leonor sighed, “where are you going now!?”
“To make a call to my father! This is a collectors coin Leonor! If I am going to be minted on silver my people should at least know it’s me and not whoever imposter is on that coin!”
“That’s just the start of this coin debacle” Sofia whispered.
Leonor only rolled her eyes playfully.
“Oh sofi! Alix is level headed. Surly she was a bit…bothered by the coin but she won’t left it affect her day to day. She’s not like that”.
********************************************
Leonor halted as she eyed her soon to be wife, watching as the green eye girl sat at her study, desk light on, protruding the most vicious beams of LED light that the vologarian royal house could find. The magnifier stand in front of the vologarian princess. Two pieces of silver coins in hand as she peered at them through wide green lashes. Comparing both the coins.
“I would ask how you’re taking the coin debacle in stride, but now I am not so sure” were Leonor’s words as she moved to sit comfortably across her girls lap. Leaving a few kisses on her cheek as she did.
Alix didn’t shy away, a smile pulling at her features as she eyed the coins in her hands.
“If you must know I called my father and he said..get this my love…he said…he didn’t see anything wrong with my perception”.
Leonor didn’t know wether to laugh or cry.
“That’s preposterous! Why even I could tell it was completely and utterly wrong!”. Leonor spoke, blonde brows knitted as she laid her arms loosely around Alix’s neck.
Alix nodded. “Right! Honestly.”
“Well if your father won’t even give the king the feedback I suppose we’ll have to wait for the coins to come out before vetoing them-“
“I’ve already sent word to Mr Havel. He will be making the complaint for me”.
Without warning giggles erupted out of the girls mouth, king heaving chuckled that made the green eyed girl smile wildly.
“I don’t see the humor in this at all Nor!”
“I’m sorry..I’m sorry… it’s just you’re such a people pleaser! Too shy to say what you really think! I saw you when the mint advisors asked if the coin was to your satisfaction. I believe your words were “very much so”. So much so that you’re getting your prime minster, who has no interest in coins to put in a formal complaint”.
“Why yes! I didn’t want to discredit all the work they had done!!”. The green eyed girl defended.
Leonor only chuckled, moving to trace the girls jaw with lithe fingers. “Ever the kind soul you are your royal highness”
***********************************************
“St John please tell me they didn’t give me pointy chin” was the words that left Alix’s mouth.
Sofia and Leonor eyed each other from the table, the smell of nail varnish in the air as both girls watched the scene in front of them. The nail varnish brush laid suspended in the air as both girls watched.
St. John, ever the dutiful servant merely tried to calm the girl down.
“If anything your royal highness I believe this a true likeness”.
“I need soembody who will tell me the honest truth, however bleak it is” Alix uttered.
She was met with both girls and in an instant she brought the coin to Sofia, placing it in front of the hazel eyed girl.
“Go on sofi. Out with it. Remember to be as ruthless as possible. This is my image after all”.
Sofia eyed Leonor across the table, who with her eyes communicated ‘be polite’.
Sofia eyed the coin, taking it in her fingers and then eying the girl. She even went so far as to place the coin side by side.
“It would help if you moved to the side so I could see your profile..perfect just like that”.
It took a moment before Sofía spoke.
“Honestly…I’m not seeing very much of the volograd chin”.
“Oh GOTT IM HIMMEL!” Came the words and out Alix went, St. John behind her. “I’ll be meeting Mr Havel for a long meeting”.
Leonor watched as she went before moving to Sofía, “you had to say it!”.
Sofia rebutted, holding her hands up. “You have to admit that coin was a true travesty! I was only doing my sister in law duties!”.
*********************************************
After months of careful planning the coin was finally to Alix’s satisfaction. All was well in the world. Till the fateful day Lacy called. The conversation was well, till the words were uttered and Leonor watched her girlfriend’s eyes crease.
“I have to say. I finally got your collection of coins for your wedding. Honestly you would think it would take a day or two to post but I barely received the parcel just last week.”.
Alix chuckled, “it’s your fault for letting your post pile up as you do lace!”.
The blonde girl shook her head, “well I was about to spare your feelings!! Who on earth did your minting?”.
At that Leonor’s eyes widened. Oh god please no she uttered.
As if on cue the green eyed spoke.
“What’s the matter with it? Why? What’s happened?”.
On cue Leonor moved to wave a hand to Lacy from the camera, signaling for her to stop.
“Well it’s just…it doesn’t look very much like you at all”.
The words were out.
Both collective gasps filled the room, Leonor from the side, and St. John who had just overheard the conversation.
Alix sighed into her hand, pinching her nostrils. “I-it’s just a coin. It doesn’t really matter” she managed to get out.
Both Leonor and St. John eyed each other, surprise in their eyes.
“That’s a very mature way to look at it Alix. I thought by now you an your perfectionist ways would be halfway- wait what are you doing?”.
Alix shushed her friend, scribbling nonse sense on the napkin across the table.
“My measurements!! My coin cannot be finished without them!”
Legend says Alix is still sending in notes with her critiques on the coin. Hope you enjoyed that but before the new chapter! Love as always!-🇪🇸
This is so predictable and literally so funny! Alix just freaking out and being such a perfectionist over a freaking coin, I JUST CANT AHAHA!!! 🥲🤣😩
🇪🇸 you are are really feeding us all today and I’m fucking here for it. Thank you!!!
(ps. did u see the new Leonor coin for her 18th? I found it so funny how the WOTC fandom is talking about coins and the SRF just released some! Classic!!!)
