the crazy thing about the sages in totk and their connections to the champions in botw to me is this: if the events of totk had happened 100 years ago, the champions would have been the sages. they have the sages' powers passed down by blood, and their descendants use the same powers throughout the game. all of them are related to the sages--
except Revali.
he's just some guy!! all of the other champions have their powers because they're descendants of the sages. but Tulin is the sage of wind and to my knowledge he isn't related to Revali at all. revali is the only one that has no special powers, only his own skills. the fact that teba and tulin exist implies that the actual descendant of the sage of wind had to be present when the hylians came looking for a rito champion, and revali took that guy's job. Imagine having the power to literally control the wind but even w that you're just not fucking good enough to compete with Revali 'I have to be the best at everything or I'll go nuclear' of the Rito for the title of champion. if all of the champions had survived the calamity and were there to help Link in totk, they would all be the ones with the secret stones taking up the mantle of sage. except Revali, who would just be some guy still hanging around losing his mind bc for the second time in his life an actual child is being given a position that he thinks he's much better suited for. it's a good thing he didn't make it honestly I don't think he'd take it well.

So I watched that video on youtube "It's all about Ruby" where they explain why ruby is probably the cause of all the supernatural stuff and i dont know why i didnt think of that earlier.
I didn't see anyone talk about it here so i just wanted to point out the times when ruby imply that she is the one being guided every time she gains some kind of succes in her career.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and almost always whenever crows appear ruby is there almost like they're connected to her. And they actually guide her.
Tumblr media
so the theory that since this town worships amenouzume (the goddes of art, deity off fulfilled wishes.) its probably the fact that sarina prayed to become an idol and died before it could be fulfilled that she was listened and eventually reborn (mind you, she wasn’t reborn for 4 years and just waited till ai will give birth, in contrast to aqua who convieniently died the same night. Why would they give ai's child the soul of a girl already dead for 4 years if she wouldn't be connected.) as ai's child with aqua there with her as 'the only other person she loved'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's what the theory says and im inclined to agree. after all, the crow girl says herself that ruby is fulfilling her role amazingly meanwhile aqua still has to think about it.
(But what is ruby doing different than aqua? They both try to get to their father. Unless, ruby being popular is an important factor.)
Tumblr media
Let me just point out as well that shes basically saying ai's death or rather the hope of her reincarnation is the factor that would stop them from achievening their goal or purpose, so we can say ai's death was a very important factor in whatever happened and, maybe, just as goro's death to ruby, was supposed to drive them to change their behavior. It's already something we could assume but the question is what role did crow girl played in ai's death and why she choose not to reincarnate her. Bc It's like she's saying aqua can't hope for ai to live a happy life since it distracts him from his destiny, because then he would rest, and he still doesn't do what he's supposed to.
Personally, I think there is a big missing piece of puzzle we still dont know, either in ruby's past with the gods or ai's secret we haven't came to know, that is the cause of it all. But surely all those things contributed majorly as well, after all ruby is more important to the plot than some people might think bc of her absence.
Oh and someone also noticed the mention of amaterasu (connected to amenouzume)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'her children also carry great destinies'
Again, this isn't my theory and I recommend you to watch that video on youtube if you want to know more details!!

i might be way off because i don't know what the discourse is like in the chinese side of the fandom regarding JC but maybe the reason people insist that he's ~the most human, relatable character~ is because out of the main cast, he's the only one who falls into familiar character archetypes found in western media - the gruff, angry but secretly caring character. (altho in jc's case he doesn't quite get the soft underneath part)
Like i can't think of a single protagonist in western media that really has wwx's characteristics? with his cheery optimism, he is more similar to the best friend who counters the protagonist's pessimism trope that is common in western media. (this comes back to jc again, protags in western media are so often pessimistic, woe is me types, maybe thats why people are inclined to relate to jc, and end up projecting other western protag tropes like the 'underdog who eventually proves himself' onto him).
i think people maybe find wwx's outgoing, sometimes arrogant, personality alienating, like his relentless badgering of lwj when they're teenagers - this isn't a common trope for a protag, and people don't know how to relate to a character who doesn't behave how they expect. and western media loves the 'reluctant hero' whose forced into their role by destiny or circumstances, but wwx's heroism always comes from his own agency. he doesn't invent demonic cultivation bc of some dumb prophecy or anything, he chooses to do it. western protagonists rarely have this much... agency? they normally just get pushed around doing whatever the narrative requires
and while lwj has some characteristics of the stoic love interest, he's different enough to how that trope is played in western media that he can't be reduced to that trope either. then there's the people who find him ~problematic~ and refuse to look at his character beyond the surface level
maybe wwx and lwj are just too complex for people to pigeonhole into character tropes, so they give up with them and take JC instead, because he's easier to reduce to his most basic characteristics
a;lkfdjalskfj you didn’t have to come for the stans like that.
I’d disagree that Western protagonists generally don’t have agency; if it feels like the characters are just fulfilling the requirements of the plot without any actual personality or agency of their own beyond the bare minimum, then it’s Poor Writing no matter where the author is from. That said, JC is definitely the easiest character to shove into simple archetypes. Also I’m very much starting to suspect that it’s a result of people pitching it as YA, which does tend to have more simplistic, tropey characters who just act as the plot demands.
