A Theory about Ecco’s Past

Hey guys! It’s me again, coming at you with another theory that I deemed necessary for a certain character: Ecco. Something that is so interesting about her character is that we know absolutely nothing about her past. The only details we do know is that she has known Jeremiah for at least six years, and that she is very proficient in hand to hand combat. After doing research about her inspirations, I have come up with a theory that may explain her past. Remember: This is a theory. None of this is confirmed, but it is backed up by some supporting evidence by the character she was based off of. First, let’s get into the original inspiration for her character.

Ecco was inspired by a much lesser known character in the Batman mythos, named Isabelle Cheranova, who had the code name Echo. She was a Russian spy who was sent to Gotham during the events of No Man’s Land. A unique detail about her is that she actually had a device implanted in her head that allowed her to read minds because of an organized operation called the ‘Turing Project’ by an organization called GRU (not the guy from Despicable Me). Another interesting tidbit is that she was very proficient in the realms of hand to hand combat, as I believe she was an assassin of sorts. Apparently, her training happened around the age of ten, which could make sense for her character. As we can see, Ecco seems to have a lot in common with this character, and many articles have cited her as inspiration for her appearance on Gotham. It is also notable to mention that in a recent podcast interview, Francesca revealed that she asked to have a Russian accent for her role in 4x17, which was originally supposed to be the only episode that she was featured in. This leads to the main part of my theory.

I think that Ecco used to live in Russia as a child, but when she got to the age of ten, she was taken away from the family she had there in order for her to participate in the Turing Project. There, she was trained in combat and in fire-arms to be apart of an army they were planning to build in order to take over wherever they were planning to. She excelled in these training programs, and because so, she was taken to where they would implant the device in her head. Due to the fact that Ecco was reluctant to have this done to her, she fought her way out and escaped on an arms jet (or something like that) that would take her to Gotham. 

After arriving, she snuck out and lived on the streets for a little while, fighting her way through to survive. This happened until she was adopted by a rich family, as they found her and took her in as they saw she needed help. She would grow close to them for the time she lived there. They would also enroll her to a school called St. Ignatius, where she would meet...

This nerd. None other than Jeremiah Valeska. Since I’m pretty sure that he was at the top of his class, he was looked at as a nerd and made fun of for his looks at St. Ignatius. Perhaps one day he was making his way through the hallway, and he was ambushed by some jerks (who I would willingly fight because no one should ever hurt this precious nerd boy). Ecco might have seen this, and have beat them up in order to help Jeremiah. Before he could thank her, she might have run off. 

After that, the two of them may have kept running into each other. Since I think that Ecco was very shy, defensive, and private person, she might have ate lunch in the library to avoid other people. They would eventually end up getting to know each other, as one day, he might’ve decided to eat in there because of jerks. The two would’ve bonded over things, and she would open up to him more as time went on. They would eventually become best friends, and she would follow him into his career as his proxy, body guard, and assistant. As time went on, they also would develop romantic feelings for one another. I guess they would have been there all along, but only really surfaced as they started working in the maze together? Eventually, they would be in a relationship and agree to keep it private, as she worked for him, and it was better that way anyway. (I mean, after school was done, I guess Jeremiah wanted to keep himself under the radar anyway).

That’s pretty much the basis of my theory on how Ecco met Jeremiah, and how her past possibly links to her original inspiration of character. I’m aware that none of the theory is canon. However, like I always say, it’s fun to theorize and think about these things, as we truly don’t know until they tell us. I hope you guys enjoyed reading this!

I like your Isabelle Cheranova/Ecco theory. We need more Ecco theories. My theory is a bit darker but I'll share that later. Do you think Jeremiah lied about getting adopted by a rich family? I assumed Jeremiah lied to his mom & she told Jerome to torture him. Another and I thought it's weird that rich people would be interested in adopting a poor circus kid unless they were rich scientist or celebs. It's also weird that terrible people like the uncle and mom knew rich people.

Hello!! I’m so glad that you enjoyed my theory, and I agree that we need more Ecco theories! I can’t wait to hear yours. I would like to say that your posts about Gotham are always so thought provoking, and they make me think, just as this ask does! I never really thought about if the getting adopted by a rich family was legit or not, I always assumed it was true, but now that you say this, it really does make me wonder. Like you said, how would Lila or Uncle Zack even know any rich families in general? I’m not sure. If what Jeremiah said was true, maybe they saw his talent and wanted to adopt him for his prestige? What you said could be true in the realms of Jerome being asked to torture Jeremiah though, it could explain why he said “it didn’t happen exactly like that”. That still implies that something did happen, and since Lila seemed crazy anyway, it’s not too far off. I mean, I always thought that Jeremiah was adopted, but as you bring these points up, I have to say that I’m half and half. It’s so fun to theorize! Thank you again! I hope you have a great day! 😊
