I think the most puzzling criticism(?) I've had thrown my way when analyzing and critiquing RWBY is that I "focus too much of moments that don't matter."
I remember someone tried to say I was focused too much on that infamous scene where Yang grabs Blake and runs from the Apathy, all the while leaving Ruby, Weiss, and her very drunk Uncle behind.
Are we not supposed to focus on that scene? Analyzing how your characters react in a dangerous situation when all the chips are down can give you a lot of insight into the character's mindset and what they value most. I've seen similar analysis done on other series and its fine and even expected, but somehow it's too nitpicky when it's done to RWBY.
The fact of the matter is, RWBY, like most Anime, is a visual medium. It doesn't tell its story solely through dialogue, character actions and body language tell you just as much, and sometimes even more, about a story and characters than just talking would, and the fact that Yang chose to put Blake above Weiss and two family members (who she is near constantly stated to value most above anything else) is a characterization flaw.
I once had someone tell me I focus too much on that aspect of Yang's character, that I water her down to just the big sister, but it's basic writing 101 that if you establish a trait for a character, you either need to keep that trait consistent or have a reason for said trait to be developed or otherwise removed
We can ignore the fact that Yang's characterization as the "overprotective" big sister was shoddy from the start, what with her immediately abandoning Ruby at Beacon, but even if you wanted to argue that "Yang sees all of Team RWBY as a family" or that she was "more concerned for Blake because she almost died" it doesn't negate poor characterization in the scene itself.
She could've pushed Blake ahead and told her to get out before helping the others, thus showcasing her concern for Blake without ignoring the wellbeing of the others, but instead we're left confused as to why the previously established overprotective sister just abandoned her baby sister.
I wouldn't have a problem with the scene if it was addressed in universe, maybe with Yang apologizing to Ruby profusely afterwards like, "I don't know, I panicked! I just was so worried about Blake, I wasn't thinking!" Or something like that, but it's never mentioned again.
I dunno. It just bothers me because I want to like Bumbleby, and I do to some degree, but it just feels like they're ignoring all of Blake and Yang's previous character traits and previously established relationships for the sake of a ship, and it's hurting the characters and the show. Just— it would be so easy to write a convincing romance if they just let the girls have flaws and fuck up or explain any changes they have.
If fans can analyse the most asinine scenes for crumbs to say why the writers are actually geniuses or how their ship is the best thing, we can use those same scenes and say why it doesn't work, and that scene where Yang abandons Ruby, Qrow and Weiss to drag Blake out is one of the worst.
Because as you said, anon, it makes no sense for who Yang is as a character. The show and the fans keep trying to tell us that Yang is this overprotective big sister who would do anything for Ruby, but the question remains: is she really?
Because an overprotective big sister would not abandon her sibling on the first day of school just to hang out with friends. An overprotective big sister would not leave searching for her missing sister, in the middle of their school being attacked, to a friend so she can go and look for the girl she knew for a semester. An overprotective big sister would not abandon her own sibling and uncle in a house to angry liquorice that almost killed them just to drag out the girl who hurt her and who Yang should still be angry at.
It doesn't matter that Blake almost died, because they all almost died. The Apathy wouldn't have stopped after killing Blake, she was not the only one in danger while the rest of the team watched from safety, they would've killed all of Team RWBY and Maria if Ruby hadn't have used her Silver eyes at that moment to save them.
Yang doesn't even try to get Qrow out. She just looks at Blake and takes her outside, leaving Ruby and Weiss to drag this blindingly drunk man out while still in immediate danger of the Apathy. What would've happened if the Apathy did their scream again, rendering Ruby and Weiss incapable of moving? What if Ruby couldn't use her eyes again?
If fans can use that scene to say how much Yang cares for Blake, we can use that exact same scene to criticise Yang for abandoning her family for a stupid cat girl.
