I like your discussion of Anthony's relationship with his sisters.

For Hyacinth, I have this image of Anthony at her wedding, breathing a sigh of relief. He got Hyacinth married and it didn't involve any of the Theatrics of their other siblings.

Imagine what he would do if he knew about all the breaking and entering & Mattress dancing the bride and groom have done?

Oh I have thoughts about that all right. But on a more serious note.

Anthony's relationship with his sisters is very sweet but also funny because he's at odds with all of them half the time and the other half he loves them to death.

With Daphne, he knew she was going to be the first one he'd have to step up for as a man of the house and she was born in more or less equal footing with him. First girl vs first boy when it comes to society expectations. There is a certain respect there that Anthony has for Daphne, and her womanly intuition. But I think Anthony for most of her life has treated her as an adult, I highly doubt that Anthony did much sugar coating with Daphne, she got to live most of her life in the role of his sister not his daughter and it shows in her relationship with him. The problem in their book was that Anthony at one point started worrying that Daphne wasn't as ready for marriage as she pretends to be and began to be a little bit overprotective over her specifically because of her adventures in the marriage mart. Which seriously weirded her out. And once she got married they went back to their usual relationship where they both respect each other's interests and leave each other largely alone. I'd also like to add that when it came to Daphne Anthony was hurt because he expected a little bit more of her since he always trusted her to be an adult and at one point Daphne was going something along the lines of ' well I'm not an adult, I'm not that mature, I'm just a girl' which really brought things into perspective for him

With Eloise the scene where they're talking things out into tspwl speaks volumes about their relationship. Because Eloise was stuck in the middle between being Anthony's sister and being treated as his daughter, which she never wanted and really rebelled against, both of them wanted to have a sibling relationship and both of them knew they couldn't have it because she was entirely too young when Edmund died and needed a father figure. but she resented that it has to be Anthony, she resented at her playful brother had to grow up too soon and now couldn't play with her, because she simply wanted Anthony to be the guy he used to be before their dad died. So she antagonized Anthony just to be contrary and have her fun. Also she is the sibling who is the most like him, prideful arrogant, I lay the law kind of person. So Anthony was sort of worried for her because he knew she was a lot like him and eventually she would chaff at the weight of the Bridgerton name, he just didn't know if he could protect her from the consequences, so when she ran away to meet Philip he probably had a little bit of a heart attack because he expected something crazy to happen to Eloise at some point he just couldn't prepare for this particular eventuality. Also I think it was a welcome surprise for Anthony to see that his most stubborn sister had actually grown up and was ready to become the leader he always knew she could be, he just never thought that and all this happened while he wasn't looking.

I think that Anthony's relationship with Francesca is the sweetest one, because unlike Eloise and Daphne, Francesca never actually made Anthony feel like a failure which he often felt like with his other two sisters. But Francesca she played by the rules, she never gave Anthony any trouble she was smart, a little bit sneaky, always there to welcome him with warmth, at home or in Scotland, sometimes you just have that sibling who is a healing to the soul. And I think Francesca was that for Anthony, perhaps that's why she fell through the cracks because she never complained and that made Anthony think that she was happy. I think in his younger years Anthony would just spend time with Francesca because he wanted to be with someone who was just always happy to see him, since everyone else seemed to have all these expectations and demanded so much attention, but not Francesca, she was calm and good and she understood when he couldn't give her as much attention as he gave everyone else. And because he loves her so much I think he also feels very guilty that he missed out on a lot of important things in her life and wasn't there for her when she was passing through her worst moments and he feels grateful to Michael that he made her smile again because to Anthony Francesca is special, out of all his crazy siblings, she's the one he probably likes the most and the only one he's willing to look the other way for. I'm pretty sure that Anthony did find out what happened in Scotland, and he pretended that he didn't know because she's his favorite and he doesn't want to have this conversation with her Anthony has never had to seriously scold Francesca for anything in her life and he doesn't want to start now ( at most he told her off for not inviting him to her second wedding and that was it. )

And then we have Hyacinth, she's practically Anthony's daughter so she is more babied than anyone else, I think Anthony spoiled her too much, and at the end he realized that he had to let her grow up make her own mistakes even if that meant he would have to eventually deal with a scandal (because of course she's wild and stubborn like Eloise but with Daphne and Francesca's social charm). Letting his baby grow up also meant setting her loose to find her own path. And let her be the' joy' of other unsuspecting individuals like Lady Danbury and Gareth for a change.

ok so I know you’re writing and probably already thought of this but I’m case you didn’t: the differences in elven courting rituals and oceanic courting rituals, specifically when it comes to wedding gifts. if you have thought about this feel free to ignore but the way I see it

elves live a while,and probably know about the arranged marriages a decent amount of time before they happen, so in between wedding planning and normal life each half of the marriage is planning some extravagant amazing wedding gift like gardens of gold or giant tapestries and stuff like that

meanwhile ocean/swamp folk who don’t live as long probably have more personal gifts, even in arraigned marriages bc they’re still getting to know each other! but either way the gifts are more personal and specifically tailored to the other half

so keeping track we have Scott, panicking bc he has like zero time to plan a wedding and learn a language and make a wedding gift and so the necessary things for life in however little time he has, Jimmy, panicking bc he doesn’t know anything about scott, no one he knows knows anything about scott, and even when they finally meet scott isn’t exactly an open book! so Jimmy is trying to do the same things as scott (tjough his doesn’t need to be as extravagant) in addition to finding out who the hell he’s getting married to and also ruling a kingdom

first I need you to know that I saw your url and had the immediate gut reaction of "oh same hat!" XD

So courting traditions in general:

I don't have too much set in stone currently, lots of ideas and concepts though, because I'm half shaping the story around it and half shaping it around the story, because writing be like that (rip) but I do have a few things.

Rivendell is basically just Tolkein's elves partly isekai-ed into minecraft, lets be real. So I've yoinked the tradition from there of the bride-to-be's family gifting a jewel (usually of magical or historical or familial importance) to the groom-to-be as a sort of pre-dowry. Only because heteronormativity does not exist here it is usually a mutual exchange of gifts. Tapestries and other labor and skill intensive textile arts also play a role because of the importance of textiles in Rivendell culture (see the ask that I'm answering after this one for more details on that) And there is also just a general idea of "a demonstration of what you are bringing to the table" for the actual wedding exchange. Like the most intense and stressful art show where both your entire extended family and also your significant other/others's extended family will be judging it. (Exact form of art varies depending on the skills and interests of the elf in question; culinary, poetry, musical, metal working...the list goes on)

The Swamp has fewer actual universal traditions. Due to their recent (past few centuries) history they are basically two nations that mixed and mingled and also include a few different diasporas interspersed within them. Jimmy himself tends towards more Oceanic traditions, which include things like feats of bravery and provision. This will go both exactly as well as you think it will and genuinely very well. (Oceanic traditions tend towards dramatic and grand gestures and statements. Ability to protect and provide is a huge thing both in the Ocean and the Swamp.)

Also Jimmy absolutely panics and ends up asking a good dozen random citizens for advice.

You also have the added layer of this specific instance being an arranged marriage (which isn't especially unusual) between two empires (which is wildly unusual at their social level) That custom is, in fact, purely an Oceanic one. (Which is why Joel and Lizzie were the previous example)

Most/all of the other Empires don't tend to intermarry their royals because enough Empires don't use familial succession models that it renders it fairly unstable as an alliance technique. There's more context for the Oceanic take on it but that is a whole nother post/will be in the fics explicitly.

The point of all this is that both parties are kind of stressed and trying to figure out how to compromise/accommodate while not really having a fully applicable framework for this situation (on Rivendell's part.)

Rivendell barely has interacted with the other empires for generations let alone married them.

Xornoth and Iona actually had it fairly easy, outside figuring out how to navigate the religious minefield that is Xornoth's entire existence. It was a very matter of fact, business like courtship that Scott and Iona ran with all the stringent focus of a military operation (which it basically was) and not even Xornoth's tendency towards chaos could really do much in the face of that.

In the context of like, personal gifts Joel and Lizzie actually got off really easy because by the time they got married-married they'd technically been married for several years already.

It’s so frustrating how team Black always accuses Alicent id being a bad mother without examining why exactly(if we agree with that statement that is 🙄). Like first of all Alicent is a very good example of how a woman in Westerosi patriarchy would behave(which they hate ofc)we see from a very early age the pressure she’s put under and how she’s much more aware of women’s limitations and the role they have to play in society than R is. We also see his despite the way Otto grooms her A tries again and again to play the role of the conciliator in the family from trying to advice V and R to talk to each other to her trying mend things with R after she marries V as well as showing interest in Westerosi affairs of the kingdom(something R doesn’t do)But the more she spends time with the Targs the more dysfunctional she becomes herself both due ti her relationship with O and due to V and R’s entitled arrogant behaviour. She tries her best with her kids but not only does she have ti struggle with the fact that they were result of her rape but she also fears for their lives.And frankly A comes off way more women friendly than R does. I mean someone should make a gif of A giving Criston reproachful look after he calls R c**t in contrast to R laughing at D calling his wife a b***h. Or her accusing A of being self righteous when she hooked up with her uncle at his wife’s funeral and then was complicit in the murder of an innocent men in order to fake Laenor’s death. At least with A you can see she struggles and hates what society tells her she has to do for the family,etc but R shows no regret at all for all the lies and gaslighting.

Agree. This is such a dumbass takeaway that veers into the positively vile. Alicent is not beyond reproach (no mother is, no person is!), but she doesn't have the psychological education and therapeutic tools at her disposal to help herself and her children. She cannot remove herself from her constant triggers, because there is no divorce in Westeros, no packing up your bags and leaving, no social services. She is a child bride, maritally raped and forced to bear children.

Not to mention how she is forced into this very traditional female role, when she displays a romantic attachment to Rhaenyra in the first episodes. Laenor is hailed as this tragic gay victim of heteronormative patriarchy, but Alicent is never awarded that kind of grace. Laenor is well within his rights not to have sex with his wife in order to reproduce, but Alicent should magically be okay with her body being at Viserys' beck and call. Of course motherhood is going to be a very difficult labyrinth for her to navigate in these conditions.

People see a distraught child-mother desperately trying to calm her crying baby and think "see? the baby hates her. she is crying because Alicent is a bad mother and abusing her!" Alicent is seen passing her baby to her handmaidens when she has a guest over, so that they could discuss a delicate matter in peace: she must hate her children because she disposes of them to her servants. Even though every high born lady has access to childcare. Rhaenyra has a literal army of child minders following her around, but she never receives the same kind of comments. Alicent asks Helaena questions about creepy-crawlies to engage her daughter in conversation and the internet interprets it as her being dismissive of her daughter's hobbies, when she has just proved anything but. "She looks so bored" - you bet your bottom dollar she is bored. Who the hell is interested in bugs and worms? Most people are disgusted by them and run away screaming. Yet Alicent becomes a terrible mother for not stanning insects - I can't with these people.

Agreed. Alicent displays high levels of emotional and political intelligence from the beginning. She knows what Otto is asking her to do, but she can't verbalize it because it's so awful, she doesn't know or want to put it into words. She very clearly suffers from anxiety as a result of this.

Alicent defends Rhaenyra to Viserys with every opportunity she gets, even though Rhaenyra has frozen her out as a result of her marriage. I'm not going to put too much blame on Rhaenyra here, because her feelings are completely normal: she thinks that her father is replacing the family unit that they formed with a brand new shiny one that Alicent can provide. She is a hurt teenage girl who just lost her mother in a brutal way. She's not going to be the most empathetic person. But that doesn't stop Alicent from reaching out to her.

But the more she spends time with the Targs the more dysfunctional she becomes herself both due ti her relationship with O and due to V and R’s entitled arrogant behaviour. It's a combination of neurosis, anxiety, repression, paranoia and isolation that escalates with Rhaenyra's obliviousness at how her own behaviour is socially perceived. Rhaenyra doesn't understand that her actions appear hostile to Alicent:

lying on her mother's grave (if she lied about that, she could lie about anything; why would Alicent believe her anymore?)

getting Otto fired for telling the truth and leaving Alicent without her only source of support, as flawed a father as Otto was

not having any kind of relationship or affection towards her half-siblings (what's to stop her from killing them when the time comes, if she cares so little about them?)

intentionally having bastards and causing a future succession crisis

not taking any responsibility for what Luke did to Aemond, suggesting that a freshly-mutilated Aemond be tortured, impressing upon her father that her bastard children's reputation must be upheld at any cost, even cost of life or body parts

having her husband "murdered" (aka encouraging rumours that she hand a hand in his death)

marrying Daemon, a known maniac, whom no one wants on the throne and the sole reason Rhaenyra was named heir in the first place

stealing Driftmark away from the Velaryons and being complicit in the murder of a man for telling the truth

How in the world are these acts meant to endear Rhaenyra to Alicent? How is Alicent supposed to blindly believe in Rhaenyra's good intentions after all this?

Black stans usually counteract this argument by claiming that they don't support Daemon, but Rhaenyra. Daemon is there for them as a convenient shield to deflect any criticism of Rhaenyra.

The self-righteous accusation was the cherry-on-top of Rhaenyra's gaslighting. She had just come back from fucking Daemon on the beach the night of his wife's funeral. She had just finished manipulating her father into threatening violence to cover up her own legal infractions. She was in no way entitled to make any kind of character judgments.

Kuchen (Yumekuro) - Happiness-Filled Marriage - Moon and Sun

warning: this post is really long. Sorry for that lol.

warning 2: if you don't wanna read all this and you're not sure which story you wanna unlock (moon or sun), don't be misled by moon's CG. It's Kuchen we are talking about after all ^^ And I'm not gonna recommend the best skill for this card cuz I sincerely don't know which one is best.

MAIN STORY

I think I posted something about all of kuchen's cards, so obviously I'd give a summary + impressions for this one as well :D

I didn't read the main event (and Idk if I'll have time to do so), but we see Kuchen and MC talking about this promotion event they will organize. The siblings will be responsible for the event's menu.

Kuchen looks fucking amazing in his tuxedo (but when doesn't he look hella fine? xD) while he is reading a pamphlet about marriage and wedding ceremony. He and MC will pretend to be a groom and a bride to try to understand the customers' needs.

Later that day, MC helped Kuchen to decide what he would do for dessert for this event. He wanted to do something special for the couples. Kuchen clearly doesn't know/understand what is the big deal about wedding ceremonies, but as he accepted this challenge, he will give his all.

While MC was helping him, she was self-conscious that she liked Kuchen. But she didn't say anything to Kuchen and proceeded to help him get the job done.

On the next day, MC said she talked to her married seniors about their opinion of what marriage was like. Kuchen said that this will help him to get a better idea of what to do for this promotion event.

I just love how Kuchen seems unimpressed about marriage hahahah. What a stoic non-romantic boy. But well, it makes sense as he never felt in love before. I don't think he dated either.

Once MC's dress was finished, MC and Kuchen, dressed as bride and groom to spend part of their day doing activities that would be available to the couples. Kuchen was super nice to MC and although he is not interested in those types of events, it looked like he had fun with MC there.

Days passed by, and Kuchen finally finished his dessert + gift to the couples. I think it looked like a box with a flower on it and chocolates that had different tastes.

PS: we also had a chance to see the 3 brothers interacting in this event and it was super cute <3

MOON END

It's the promotion event day and everything is ready. But, kuchen and MC find out through one of the staff that the model who was going to work in the church event as the bride couldn't attend the ceremony. She was supposed to walk down the aisle with the groom model that was also hired to try to recreate a tradtional wedding.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't understand why they wanted to perform a wedding ceremony for people to see. What was the point? I wonder if they are just trying to attract more couples to marry in that church or something.

Anyway, as you can expect, they asked MC to be the bride, as she already has the dress and she is involved in this promotion event for couples.

She accepts it, even though she doesn't know exactly what she has to do. As the menu is all ready, her job with the guild is done.

But she asks the staff member if it's ok to invite Kuchen to be the groom because she is a bit anxious and she doesn't know the model who is going to perform with her. Kuchen accepts it.

Later that day, we see Kuchen and MC waiting in one of the church's rooms. They are both dressed again in their groom and bride outfits.

Kuchen was super sweet and he brought a hot chocolate for MC noticing she was nervous with this whole acting thing.

After drinking her hot chocolate, they both head to the church to play their roles. Everything proceeded smoothly. They 'got married' and then walked to the main door. Once they crossed the church's hall, Kuchen stopped next to the entrance door.

Out of the blue, he got closer to MC and kissed her softly. I was not expecting to see that in this game to be honest hahahah. But they didn't show the kiss, just Kuchen leaning to kiss her while she had already closed her eyes.

At first, I was not sure if they did kiss, but yeah, that actually happened. After they left the church, Kuchen asked MC if she was mad at him. She didn't say she hated it or liked it. But she was confused, to say the least. She likes Kuchen so it was a a bittersweet moment.

Even after he noticed MC was shocked by what he did, he just played it cool. His excuse to kiss MC is that he wanted to see her reaction and that he read in a wedding pamphlet that kissing the bride model after leaving the church was kinda trendy or a tradition recently, so he wanted to recreate that or at least give MC this experience. Oh, he also said that she talked a lot that marriage can represent a future with your significant other, so he said maybe he thought it would be nice if one day she is part of this future.

SUN END

MC was helping Kuchen to decorate the plates and the sweets. He gave her good pieces of advices while she was working with him.

Then, she had to get dressed because they had to role-play as groom and bride for the couples in the event.

At the 'ceremony' they had to cut a cake just like in a real wedding. It was really cute that part.

Kuchen spoon-fed MC first and obviously, she blushed (I lost count of how many times she did that in this story). When it was her turn, she gave Kuchen a big piece of cake and I guess he had a hard time eating it, but it was hilarious. Silly, but hilarious.

The event was a success, the couples were excited to taste Kuchen's chocolates and they loved the gift boxes they prepared for them.

When MC was just getting ready to change into her normal clothes, she saw some staff women hitting on Kuchen in the corridor. They wanted his number/personal info to know each other better, if you know what I mean ahahah. Kuchen seemed uninterested and annoyed. We didn't see his reply cuz MC left before she could hear what he would say.

Alone in the garden where they organized the event, she was just thinking about what Kuchen may have said to these women. She was curious, but she didn't want to pry. Also, she is sad because she likes him, so it hurts to see 'your' man in that situation.

Kuchen appears out of nowhere. He offers her some chocolate. It was those 5 boxes gifts they gave to the couples. MC was gloomy, but she did her best to try to hide her feelings. Obviously, it didn't work.

Trying to tease MC again, Kuchen put a choco in her mouth. The thing was that he also put the other half of the choco in his mouth as well. You know, that game to try to eat the food to see if they will kiss or not XD.

It was not very clear, but from what I understood, they didn't kiss. I think MC stopped when she was really close to Kuchen's lips.

After teasing her, he noticed she was not worried anymore. Also, he confirmed to her that he saw her in the corridor earlier. It was impossible not to notice her with such a dress.

MC didn't confess her feelings, but she felt way better having exchanged those moments with him. Also, he said to her that he had a great time and that he actually felt during this whole event that they were a groom and a bride.

MY OPINION

Listen, I love Kuchen, he is my fav character, but I think that whole (I like Kuchen) was a bit forced/unexpected. I got all Kuchen's cards and I always had the feeling that MC was not interested in Kuchen yet. I don't understand this sudden change of behavior. I mean, she usually gets flustered every time Kuchen praises/teases her, but it was the first time (at least that I remember) she confessed she liked him. Am I being too salty here? lol

And I didn't like how things turned out in the moon end.

I just don't actually see Kuchen kissing her in this situation. I read moon first, and I thought there was a high probability Kuchen had noticed already that MC is into him.

After reading sun I was 100% sure of that. So to me, it doesn't make sense he would kiss her right now because her feelings are a mess, and he can see that.

So maybe... this is just a stupid theory of mine, he couldn't stop himself from kissing her? If that was the case, then it's fine. But if he kissed her just to see her reaction or give her a good experience, it was a wrong call. There, I said it XDD

That being said, I loved the sun story. I really like to see him teasing her but without crossing the line. He is very creative, isn't he? lmaoo

I still don't like MC's child/pure/dense personality when she is around a womanizer like Kuchen, but well, it's unlikely that they would change her personality at this point. But she is an adorable cute girl for sure.

Sarumi wedding and Yata's relatives are there and Munakata is taking the dad position for Fushimi. Yata's younger relatives comment that it meant Munakata is a DILF and Munakata wonders what that meant. Awashima looks it up and answers and Anna ask if that meant Kusanagi is one, too.

Please no one tell Munakata what this means (also meanwhile imagine the alphabet boys overhearing this and Doumyouji has to mention it to Akiyama like wait do you like DILFs as well as MILFs is that why you joined S4 and Akiyama is just like let's all stop talking now). So imagine Sarumi wedding happening and of course Fushimi wouldn't invite his dad even if Niki was alive, as far as Fushimi's concerned his family doesn't exist. Yata's totally in support of Fushimi not having anyone to fill the parental role in the wedding and would probably be fine if they even just got rid of that kind of thing but his mom and stepdad are really excited for the whole mother/father of the groom bit. Yata wonders if it would be awkward for Fushimi not to have anyone and that's when Fushimi's like 'I...might have someone.' He ends up asking Munakata and Awashima to be in the wedding in place of his parents, Awashima is touched and Munakata is of course just thrilled, he is ready to be father of the bride and Fushimi probably immediately regrets this rare of moment of honest emotion like you know what forget I asked.

Munakata and Awashima do end up being in the wedding though and it's all very nice, Munakata manages to rein in his extreme happiness at being asked to play this important role for Fushimi-kun and he's really just very pleased to see Fushimi finally happy. After the wedding everyone's enjoying the reception, Fushimi and Yata do some dancing and then eventually have to take a break because Fushimi's getting exhausted by having all these people around. Yata goes to get him a drink and Awashima, Kusanagi and Anna come over to offer congratulations. Yata comes back with drinks and that's when Megumi comes over and tugs on Yata's shirt. Yata asks what's up and Megumi points to where some of their younger female relatives are all surrounding Munakata, looking very impressed as Munakata talks to everyone with his King charisma on full display. Yata laughs like hey Saru I think your King is a big hit, Megumi nods and says one of their cousins said Saru's 'dad' is a “DILF.”

Fushimi promptly spits out his drink while Anna looks over curiously wondering what a DILF is. Megumi says she doesn't know and asks her big brother, Yata's like huh I dunno I guess it's a word for nerd guys. Fushimi is just choking on his water as Awashima pulls out her PDA to look it up, her face narrows in displeasure as Anna and Megumi look at her expectantly. Awashima pauses, mindful for the children present, and then says it's a word for “...older men who are still very debonair and interesting.” Anna considers that and then asks if Kusanagi is a DILF too, Fushimi again chokes on his drink. Kusanagi tries to blow this off like now Anna you don't need to ask that and then Awashima's like well yes I think he probably is and now Kusanagi's choking on his drink. Love how the book that Wakaba is reading (where a heroine has always loved a certain man, he rejects her, and another, better man instantly appears) both illustrates Wakaba’s immaturity in clinging to a story like that, and foreshadows Utena’s arc over the show—she’s always loved her Prince (or so she thinks), but it’s Akio who appears before her in his place, the prince turned devil…

The egg monologue never gets old. Also how it foreshadows the very end of the series, in Utena cracking the world’s shell to free Anthy stuck inside.

I’d forgotten about the “Utena moves into a new dorm w/ no one else” plot that starts the series, before she moves into Akio’s building. It frames Utena as different from the rest of the students w/ in the narrative, and it also isolates her in-universe, before Akio even starts directly manipulating and grooming her. And Anthy plays her role, as she has to… Interesting that when Utena asks why Anthy she is the Rose Bride, she responds w/ “Why do you always dress as a boy?” Utena says she likes it, with Anthy saying that’s why she’s the Rose Bride. Complexities here w/ how Anthy might be hurt by the Rose Bride role, but she knows how to play it and how it will hurt her; easier to deal w/ anticipated hurts than to risk something new and different, as we see play out in the finale (until everything works out).

Utena’s early naivete is so fascinating, because she’s both wrong and right: the duels are ultimately meaningless, used to trap students at Ohotri in an endlessly repeating cycle, but it was only by going thru the duels that Utena got to the place where she could free Anthy.

I’d been neutral on Chu-chu on previous watches but I’m finding him cuter this time around. The idea that he’s standing in for Anthy’s unexpressed feelings really adds a depth to his character: him uniquely warming to Utena, or him warning Utena that Saionji was after Anthy. In this light, the very end of the ep takes on even more resonance, in Utena saying she won the duel not for Anthy but for Chu-chu. Given Utena’s journey thru the show of learning more about Anthy the real person, not just the image she projects, and how that real love inspires Utena to keep moving towards Anthy in the finale.

Speaking of the Saionji – Anthy scene, there’s a great dissolve where the lamp light becomes Anthy’s face—because she was the light of the world all along, not Dios or the prince. There’s another dissolve between Saionji and a pillar when he says she devoted herself to him completely when they were engaged—phallic symbol, ahoy. (Also it foreshadows Akio’s tower and his and its prominence thru the rest of the show; if Saionji is an immature misogynist, then Akio is its mature form.) If Utena doesn’t get that the Rose Bride is forced to sleep w/ the people she’s engaged to, we as the audience do… which then anticipates Akio/Anthy later on. There’s also how Anthy is embodying both ‘the madonna and the whore’ in her role; Anthy plays the prim, sweet, sensitive bride, forced to clean and take care of the home, and she has to sleep w/ the person she’s engaged with, and theoretically that could be a lot of people, if she was passed back and forth thru duels. Or in the language of the show, the Rose Bride vs. the Witch.

Utena saying how she’ll just lose to Anthy must be a slap in the face for her… And of course Utena can’t do it when it comes down to it in the actual duel. As Saionji says, he “admires her courage” when Utena “put the rose above her own life,” which is again foreshadowing to the climax of the series in Utena saving Anthy by not avoiding the swords of humanity’s hatred, and not allowing Anthy to take them on in her place. “The one who loses their rose loses the duel.” Interesting too how Utena does ‘lose her rose’ in the finale, her Anthy sleeping from her grasp at the end. But isn’t that the ultimate fate of the Prince, to be faced w/ failure? Because one can’t live up the Prince ideal; what matters more is how one deals w/ that reality.

Utena doesn’t just get Saionji’s rose, she cuts his sword in two!! Another phallic symbol taken down.
