the alarm on the bedside table blares the time far earlier than tristan would like, even though it’s already mid-morning. with one hand, he blindly reaches out to smack at it, missing twice until, finally, his palm lands atop his phone, fingers feeling for the part of the screen that might turn the damn thing off. for a few moments after the alarm has been silenced, he lies there, eyes fixed on the ceiling, allowing himself a beat or two to properly wake. immediately, he’s greeted with an unbearable pounding in his head and a nearly painfully dry mouth. too much liquor, a mistake he always swears he won’t make again, but he’s ever a weaker man than he gives himself credit for. it takes him at least a full minute lying motionless beneath his duvet to recall. god almighty, he brought someone back last night, didn’t he? it’s not uncommon that he engages a FLING here and there - but certainly rare as anything that he would actually bring anyone to his home, his own personal haven. but he remembers it well. at least ... he THINKS he does, unless his dreams have gotten very vivid.

and if that’s the case, he’s got to cultivate other interests ; strangely intense predispositions with women who have proven to HATE him aren’t typically fruitful endeavors.

but his bed is curiously empty, granting him the luxury - at least for that moment - of believing anything he remembered had, in fact, been a liquor-addled dream. eventually, he hauls himself up and out of bed, padding on silent feet toward his bathroom and rubbing his eyes in an effort to force himself awake, to will away the hangover that has him questioning his own reality. maybe he HAD returned home alone last night - which he can’t decide is better or worse, considering that means he’d actually dreamed of her, a concerning notion at best.

the reality falls into place when he looks in the mirror, when he sees the permanent marker partially overlaying one of the tattoos on his chest, dark enough to stand out against the slightly faded ink and light brown of his skin. 7/10. his jaw stiffens and he rolls his eyes, perhaps a bit more exaggeratedly than he intended. so she had been here. his hand tightens on his phone briefly before he sets it on the counter beside him, definitively making the decision NOT to send the text that tingles in the ends of his fingers. two can play at that game, after all.

I have decided to cheat! Here is a snippet from a fic that's so far away from being written it'll likely never see the sun, but it lives in my head.

From the Roy-Jamie-Keeley qpr where Keeley is poly and Jamie is aromantic and Roy has a lot of things bookmarked on his laptop:

Roy repeated, "The bar. It's on the floor." Jamie looked more confused. He shook his head, almost frantic with it now as the metaphors kept rolling out. "Look, I know it's a lot, but I was hoping maybe we could start there. Maybe. It's fine if we can't, I can move it if it's a problem. But just -- don't kick the bar. A lot of people kick it on accident, and some of them kick it on purpose because they don't think its fair that it should be there at all. So. Yeah. Don't. Don't do that." Help him if he ever met whichever teacher had taught Jamie metaphors in school. Roy said, "I love this bar." "What?" "Yeah. I love this bar. This is my favorite bar. I think it looks perfect where it is. In fact, I think we should redecorate the whole room around the bar. For feng shui and shit, so everything flows right. And we should make sure it has space, so if the bar ever wants to move -- wants to go higher or lower or just wants to sit out on the patio for a bit -- it can do that without ever being worried that someone is going to kick the fucking bar."

And here's a snippet from the Ted Lasso Leverage AU that I'm definitely not writing anytime soon (trigger warning for threats of gun violence, descriptions of regular violence, James Tartt Sr, etc, all below the cut for safe keeping):

"Or what, Junior?" he asked derisively, prodding Jamie's head with the gun. Roy's heart kicked in his chest. James still had the the finger on the trigger. He did it again, knocking the loaded barrel against Jamie's head as if he were using his hand to push him around. Everybody had a limit. Roy's was approaching with a speed that tunneled his sight down to the vision of breaking every bone in that hand. One by one. If he grit his teeth any harder, they were going to pop out of his skull. "Quit waving that thing around," he growled. Behind his back, the razor sawed away at the ropes, slipping in his grasp. Probably nicked himself. He couldn't feel it. James Tartt reeled back from his son with a mocking grin. Partially obscured behind the clot of his father, Jamie slumped against his ropes. "Oh, what, you mean like this? Huh?" He tapped the gun against Jamie's head, laughing dryly when Jamie flinched back. The gun went tap-tap-tap, each strike chipping the color out of Jamie's cheeks until he sat there, his expression gone flat and lifeless with bland disinterest as the the gunsight caught in his hair. Forget bones, Roy was going to kill him. Then he was going to pry each bone out of his lifeless hand and shove them down his throat.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I was going to say ‘the one in which I basically killed off all the main characters’ but in some ways that one is actually very much about love and memory and honouring that love and that family so I’m going to say Hope Deferred Maketh Something which is definitely that for the two main characters.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? Probably The OT3 Verse.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written? I write so many crossovers. I think the most out there might be my Tudors/Pundits/Law and Order UK/Criminal Minds Cinematic Universe. Or the Criminal Minds/Doctor Who.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I used to and then I discovered that writing sex scenes is triggering to all hell. And now I still do write sometimes but I have to sort of build in recovery from being triggered by it. As ever, negotiating my brain is A Delight.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I do my best as my brain allows :(. So I can’t always but I absolutely appreciate and adore every single one.

Have you ever received hate on a fic? Yes and I’ll be honest here, it made me want to stop writing. I’m still struggling with posting things on AO3 due to it. I’m building up to it and I think I’m doing better but yeah, it hurts.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge

Have you ever had a fic translated? I have and it’s delightful.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! I have co-written with wonderful close friends and had a lovely time. I’m working on the next part of a co-written thing right now and I have shares in an original world that I’m partly helping my best friend with.

What’s your all-time favorite ship? Actually a lot of the OTPs I love with all my heart/that are deeply meaningful to me I don’t read fic for (Faramir/Eowyn, Beren/Luthien) or I read a few very select fics (Jedistormpilot). I do have ships I love very much (I will own to being very attached to my OT3 verse triad) but I wouldn’t say I have a favourite.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I will never say never but I do not think I will finish Let Us Dream. I wish I could say I could, because there’s a lot I like about it but…no not so much. I still have hopes of finishing Into The Fire even if it’s a rewrite version.

What are your writing strengths? I think I’m good at coming up with AUs, coming up with different worlds - I do love doing that.

What are your writing weaknesses? Dialogue. I am not good with the dialogue. I think that’s the big one - I’ve also had a ‘no I can’t make this long I’m BORING’ brain weasels that I’m slowly slowly working on (a lot of my writing process is wrangling my brain)

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? It’s not something I’ve done - I’ll do a [said something in language] thing but for me personally I think I’d want to know I knew the language before I wrote it (I’d double check with friends who are native speakers of [language] if I did.

What was the first fandom you wrote for? I believe the first fic I ever published (which doesn’t exist online anymore because I went through a fic deleting spree on my ff.net account at some point) was for The Bill, a British Police Procedural. It was Very Angsty.

For the Would You Ever Write ask, because I want to see your angry/controversial opinions: would you ever write AU/AH? Klaus can't be a criminal. They have to both be normal people. He can't stab or eat anyone. (And if you would write this, what would the set-up be?) Also, because I know the answer, but I want to see you foam at the mouth: would you ever, under any circumstances, write Caroline as meek?

Firs of all. It’s 9 fucking am in the morning and I hope you’re happy that the first thing I did today was curse your cursed name; I went: Jenn. That Fucking Bitch.

But anyway, Here’s the thing: I actually have this one very specific AH/AU where Klaus and Caroline are Not Murder-y. W i l d as shit I know, I’m entirely sure you’re disappointed in me. BUT! it’s like this very very very Niche trope that I will actually K I L L for.

I have an unhealthy like truly unhealthy obsession with football players [not the bs American kind, get the game’s name out of your damn mouth] but Actual football, like I cannot explain it, I was actually texting Kelly a while ago about how Football players are just a separate brand of HOTNESS, And we’ve both come to the conclusion that like it’s definitely some primal response that makes them so attractive to me, and like evolution of all things is the only thing that can explain why I go feral for them lmfao, and also Ted Lasso [a show entirely about a football club] is my favourite fucking show atm so all of that combined, I would literally die and kill for a Football AU with Klaus as a big mean arrogant and temperamental football captain playing for one of the giants in the premier league and then Caroline comes along and he like trips down the metaphorical stairs of life and falls face first for her when Caroline is like being her usual snarky mostly tactless borderline bitchy sunshine self, basically Caroline is mean to him and Klaus melts. She does not hold back on letting him know what an absolute jerk he is and Klaus is like “well problem is sweetheart, I want to be your jerk” lmao. Like I imagine Enzo is part of the team and is the biggest lil shit and Caroline and Enzo hit it off as besties and Klaus is just F u m i n g in the sidelines and is like constantly growling beneath his breath about how men who are, biologically speaking, more closely related to the domestic canine species than most people should not have the right to breathe in the same air as His Angelic Caroline.

OH and Caroline is the team’s sweetheart and hypewomen, I’m thinking she does PR for them, but basically she’s loved by all [as is law] and Klaus really reallly grapples with his cavemen tendencies to just throw her over his shoulder and go around growling Mine.

aaaaaaand at one point, in the future, Klaus wants his last name in the jersey changed to FORBES lmao if you know what I mean.

So basically yeah this is the only AH/AU I will write myself where Klaus can’t like Kill and have tea parties with the dead bodies, and it is a Sacrifice I am willing to make only for this one AU because the sizzling Hotness of a Football Player™ is just goddamn irresistible GAH.

Like I’ll be honest, excluding the above AU, I think the best I could do AH/AU wise where Klaus can’t be murder-y will still be a Crime AU, like he’ll have to At Least be a Pretentious Brilliant Thief or Conman or some sort of criminal who maybe doesnt kill but like he HAS to be a Bad Guy™, I mean I can’t possibly imagine myself writing an AU where he isnt criminally fucking shit up as is his calling on Earth.

THAT BEING SAID I LOVE READING HUMAN AU’S WHERE HE’S LIKE NORMAL AND NOT MURDER-Y AND AM GRANDLY ENETRATINED BY THEM, IT’S JUST THAT I DONT HAVE THE TALENT TO WRITE THEM MYSELF AND ALSO MAKE EM INTERESTING BECAUSE MY INTERESTS AND TALENTS LIE IN MAKING HIM AS LOVABLY DEPLORABLE AS POSSIBLE.

And now as for meek Caroline. putting this under a cut cuz this shit gets violent.

If you write Caroline in a naturally violent/ high stakes/ Dangerous AU where Caroline herself is understandably allowed to be violent, and her immediate response to being wronged isnt Fire and Fury and Vengeance in a stunningly calculated and shrewd fashion, honey sorry to say you’re doing it wrong. Like if Caroline is wronged by Anyone, she will pay them back in kind and she will Not be holding back her punches.

Caroline takes no shit, from anyone but like least of all from Klaus, and if he fucks up even just once (1) there is no going back Until Caroline has exhausted every last drop of Anger in her.

Like I simply don’t get how a Caroline who is meek and forgiving and accepting of other people’s wrongs against her can exist? LIKE SHE’S A WHOLEASS BITCH IF YOU HAVENT NOTICED AND SHE’S GONNA TURN AROUND AND FUCK SHIT UP FOR YOU. I cannot understand how Caroline can be written as someone who just conveniently rolls over and takes shit? I mean omg any response to being severely wronged that isnt an immediate thirst for blood, or at the very least, ANGER within Caroline is, as viewed by me, pathetic. Like I’ve read soo many fics [was even forced to read one against my will so my saltiness to an extent, regarding this subject, is valid] where Caroline is supposedly this pure Good Girl™ person who can do no wrong and take no revenge, because vengeance and anger is not only beneath her but reacting violently [aka appropriately] to her being Grossly Wronged would somehow taint the ✨light✨ in her, and now folks We Do Not Want That, because HOW IMPORTANT IS A WOMEN’S LIGHT!!! You gotta be pure Saintly white in all your doings to be able to shine like an LED bulb!!! which btw is a super valid goal you can have!!! Because somehow when Rihanna said “Shine Bright like a Diamond” in the fine print under the Terms and Conditions section it was Clearly stated: Only applicable if a terribly wronged women denounces murder, revenge, vengeance, anger, blood thirst and everything else fun and happy that makes life worth living in the name of Retaining her ~~purity~~

LIKE HONEY STFU AND LET SOME HEADS ROLL.

Like a Meek Caroline can be written a hundred different ways and all those hundred different ways infuriate me like hell but there are two instances that make me violently froth at the mouth:

One is when people are out here writing Caroline being wronged so G R A V E L Y by Klaus and her response to this is somehow: He’s a Dark Man, I’ve known this All along especially before letting him make Me the final resting place for his dick! so honestly speaking W h o ‘s fault is it?? like omg I wanna bite and chew paper when I see bs like this.

And the other is when it isnt Klaus wronging her and someone else being a bitch I’ve seen ff’s do something Even Worse and get Caroline to outsource the revenge taking part of business to Klaus LIKE TF DOES KLAUS LOOK LIKE, an Indian?? [listen I’m allowed these racist jokes bc I’m Indian] Like BABE NO put that knife back in Caroline’s hands let her stab who ever she wants herself!

And also the idea of Caroline being generally meek, regardless of being wronged, is like huh??? to me, no like seriously did we watch the same show??? this girl literally Bullies Klaus and Klaus melts for her, that is like their whole dynamic, she’s mean as shit to the BIG BAD VIOLENT ALMOST GODLY POWERFUL WOLF and he’s like That One....that’s the Woman I want to spend the rest of eternity with. There isnt even One (1) Canon scene where Caroline lets Klaus get away with his BS, each time every time she holds him accountable and let’s him know what a bitch he is, AND KLAUS LOVES THAT [well not exactly but that’s one of the things that makes Caroline so irresistible to him], So honestly w h o are you doing favours by writing Caroline as someone who just looks at Klaus being a Giant Jerk and goes, it’s ok baby I understand :))))))

But also Caroline in general is a sassy bitch through out the show, like forget Klaus, just by herself she’s mean and catty much like Rebekah or Katherine, Sure she is an adorable sunshine baby who is kind and loving to the people she cares about, is loyal with the strength of the Himalayas and takes it upon herself to pour her love without any restraint over anyone she decides to commit to either platonically or romantically, but like this why we have multifaceted female characters who are bitches while being good lovable people too man. Like honestly fics where Klaus falls for Caroline bc she’s characterized as pure and good and kind or whatever 2-D bullshit makes no sense to me.

ok so I’ve rambled on a lot but tldr: IF CAROLINE AINT OUT HERE GRABBING MEN BY THE BALLS AND TWISTING THEM LIKE DOORKNOBS FOR BEING JERKS as brought to you by Wherewith to Sate It’s Malice by Jenn RIGHT FROM THE GET-GO [Like I remember Caroline doing that to Klaus during their meet cute lmao because he barged in to her place and was being his usual arrogant dick self] THEN I DON’T WANT IT.

lmao But also if making Caroline forgiving and small is your thing, you do you babe, just make sure to tag it as Caroline is Everyone’s Lil Bitch on ao3 so I can stay tf away from it.

1) how many works do you have on AO3?

50!!! As of today, tomorrow (hopefully) it will be 51. 😉

2) what’s your total AO3 word count?

92,479…I write lots of small fics, tbf.

3) how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

in ao3? which is the only place I’ve published, currently: 26 fandoms, apparently…and it’s kind of all over the place. lots of one-shots in various fandoms. the most extensive ones I’ve written for are The Expanse, The West Wing, Turn, and Frontier.

4) what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

“Open Your Eyes” (Fem!Q/Bond, which is like one of the first things I ever posted, nearly eight years ago at this point)

“tenderest touch leaves the darkest of marks and the kindest of kisses breaks the hardest of hearts” (Casablanca, one of my personal faves)

“you don’t have to be a ghost here among the living, you are flesh and blood, and you deserve to be loved and you deserve what you are given, and oh how much” (The Terror, look, I was on a lyrics kick)

“i’m no hero, i just like punching people in the face” (Ted Lasso, bless Trent/Ted, kings of my heart)

“Look for the Helpers” (another Terror fic, which I personally don’t love, but hey. glad people like it! thanks for y’all’s support as I bumble along)

5) do you respond to comments, why or why not?

unless someone is being an ass, of course! I love talking to people under any circumstances, but especially about my work!!

6) what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

uh. hm. I suppose “Fever 1793” for Frontier, where, on a depressed whim, I killed off Cobbs in the Philadelphia Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793. OOPS. I still kinda feel bad about that.

7) what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

well…I’m not much for purely happy, but I feel like the first Bellevue fic I wrote, “because i am done with my graceless heart, so tonight i’m gonna cut it out and then restart” gives a “happy” ending in so much as the two characters who should’ve ended up together end up together.

8) do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

for the most part, no. I did start writing an Expanse/Harry Potter fic, but there’s not a lot of crossover, mostly just set in the universe itself. like, Harry Potter himself isn’t gonna show up.

9) have you ever received hate on a fic?

never directly. (I have received weird comments, though.) I’ve seen strong dislike on Tumblr itself (mostly related to Chrisjen/Sadavir), but eh. Let them fume, chemistry is chemistry is chemistry, Jesse.

10) do you write smut? if so what kind?

no, I am a master of fade to blacks, and by master, I mean I rely on them like a CRUTCH

11) have you ever had a fic stolen?

I hope not!

12) have you ever had a fic translated?

someone offered to translate a poem once, and I said sure, but I never heard anything else…but if they did translate it, bravo, good for them, translating is hard, and I personally can’t do it.

13) have you ever co-written a fic before?

not officially…I’ve definitely collab’d on broader AU ideas with friends (shout out to @terribleoldwhitemen in particular)

14) what’s your all time favorite ship?

I literally will not answer that because 1) impossible and 2) the first one that springs to mind is kind of. Embarrassing.

15) what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

FOR WANT OF A FUCKING NAIL. Maybe I will…MAYBE.

16) what are your writing strengths?

dialogue, capturing character’s voices, internal narratives (I think? I hope?)

17) what are your writing weaknesses?

sustaining a plot, anything remotely smutty, and yeah, I’ll agree, FINISHING THE DAMN THING

18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’ve done brief snippets of other languages, but only with quite a bit of research. I’ll probably never write full on conversations, because I’m not fluent in ANYTHING. (Except for English.)

19) what was the first fandom you wrote for?

…that goes back to my all-time favorite ship answer. I’ll just say…tsbc. if you can decipher that, yeah. YEAH.

20) what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

oh gosh. all of them? because I’m vain, and also because I really write fics for myself and like, two other people, so I like going back and re-reading all of them! but if I was pushed? I’m really fond of a fic for The West Wing, “Foxholes and the Oval,” where Lord John Marbury gets to talk to Leo post-heart attack. I like fics that fill badly needed holes. (HA.)
