Art History Meme: 1/9 Paintings
James Abbott McNeill Whistler - Nocturne in Black & Gold: The Falling Rocket (c. 1875).
I'm pretty sure that everyone knows this painting and the controversy surrounding it, so I shan't bother going in to it. For those of you that don't know, you can read the summary on wikipedia or download The Gentle Art of Making Enemies.
I first saw this painting in a second year art history class, which I have since realised was presented by my favourite lecturer. Even though I have never seen it up close, this was the first painting that ever had an immediate impact on me, and the one I always thing about when considering the aesthetic emotion. My username is a bit of a giveaway to my feelings about Whistler, but I think that despite this painting's notoriety, it is still a stunning and beautifully emotive work and exponent of the art for art's sake movement.

This week's preoccupations: a) pining for the Peacock Room, recalled in its glory by your photograph, and b) online shopping for peel-and-stick wallpaper. Ours is a reduced generation.
SO true, anon. Let me know if you find any good wallpaper patterns?

Quote
Nature contains the elements, in colour and form, of all pictures, as the keyboard contains the notes of all music. But the artist is born to pick, and choose, and group with science, these elements, that the result may be beautiful - as the musician gathers his notes, and forms his chords, until he brings forth from chaos glorious harmony.
James Abbot McNeill Whistler -10 O'clock (1885)
