Season 1, Episode 4

Once again I am given the gift of an episode starting with Baby Bashir tripping over his own ass and stumbling through another conversation which is miles over his head. Dax is so amused, here you go little boy genius, why don't you try my game, all you have to do is concentrate, OOPS I guess you were too busy having a boner, anyway byyyyeeeee! o/ o/ o/

And just a tiny note, I love that Dax has cold hands. My hands are of the "always cold" variety and it made me so happy to have a show go out of its way to be like "btw this character always has cold hands, this is for you specifically, Aira, enjoy".

We get a good starting look at Keiko and Miles in this one. They're in such a hard situation. Keiko doesn't want to live here, there's nothing for her here, but she also loves her husband and doesn't want to deprive him of his promotion and his work. It gives me such anxiety to see them arguing over it, knowing there's no simple answer. I'm glad Keiko found her niche as a teacher, at least for the time being. Meanwhile Odo grumbles on with his weird season-one makeup and voice about how stupid "coupling" is, oh Odo, you are a sweet baby boy, too. You will learn so much.

They spend a lot of time emphasizing that Jadzia Dax is a female host of the Dax symbiote and the previous host was a man, Curzon, in this one. I have mixed feelings about that. I mean, it's a cool idea for an alien race, it's a cool idea for a story. But I've seen a lot of people look at Dax as a trans icon, and she's, frankly... not that. She's not trans. Jadzia Dax, as far as we know, is a cis female. The former host, as far as we know, was a cis male. Dax, the symbiote, for all we know has no gender at all. No one involved in this is trans. It's a female character with a lot of memories from a former male character, not a trans woman.

I'm not saying trans people don't get to identify with her. People should identify with whoever they want. It just frustrates me that this is the closest we get. There are no canon trans characters in this series, just like there were no canon autistic characters. The fact that autistic fans latched on to Data is just as frustrating – because the best option an autistic person has for a role model is a literal robot. And the best option a trans person has for a role model is a woman who happens to have some memories from dead men.

Is it better than nothing? I guess. But Dax isn't trans, Data wasn't autistic, and we deserve canon characters that represent these identities.

This is the early 90s, of course. There was great representation in Star Trek for people of different skin colors and ethnic backgrounds, good representation for women, but they drew the line at LGBTQIA+ issues. I only wish I could say that they've done better since then, but it seems there's still been very little. At least they eventually let us see Jadzia kiss her ex-wife – but that's for a future diary.

Anyway. Look how Kira is already defending Odo, insisting to everyone what a wonderful person he is. She already appreciates him. The seed is planted.

The murder mystery plot is amusing. They do a good job of showing how quickly and easily a mob mentality can take hold and cause people to behave irrationally. The solution being that the guy killed his own clone is just campy enough to be true to Star Trek.

On the other hand, the fact that they find some DNA on the ship and just literally fucking drop it in a tank and grow it into a new life form is completely balls to the wall insane. "Oh hey I found some DNA, let's grow a life form! Oh SHIT it's growing REAL FAST! Who could have expected anyway you want to go grab lunch?" It raises countless scientific and ethical questions and they never. mention. it. again. Astounding.
