“Vampires are a paradox. A demon in a human body. A hybrid - natural and unnatural. They walk in both worlds but belong to neither. A vampire is a demon that has possessed a human corpse. Demons can only leave their dimension and come to Earth if they inhabit a human body. They’re considered hybrids and generally looked down upon by other demon species. It kind of reminds me of Constantine. How demons possessing humans are considered “half-breeds” and must possess a human to exist outside Hell.”
I’m sorry but this is not the way the show plays it unless it’s a no-name vampire. The show contradicts its own vampire and demon lore in order to tell more compelling stories about its significant vampires and demons. Vampires in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ are not suddenly something entirely different from what it came from although it may look like it. It may even behave like it. But it’s not. It carries the personality, mannerisms, qualities, skills and expressions of the human that died and was turned into a vampire. A demon did not possess a human psyche. Just a body. Thus, vampires are not wholly demonic entities. They are the bridge between the human and the demon. A sort of purgatory state. Neither man nor monster but somewhere in the middle between these states of being whereby they have the instincts and impulses of the demon but also the consciousness and free will of the human. You could even say they’re what you call “half-breeds” as they’re part mortal and part immortal, part natural and part supernatural. They’re more animal than monster. That’s how I interpret it because that’s how the show eventually plays it.
Angelus in particular is a monster only because he elects to be. Let’s not forget that Angel is a cursed Angelus. It’s not the other way around. Although it may seem like it because you’re introduced to Angel first. Now I haven’t really watched any of his show so I can’t really go any deeper with my study of him. I’m just basing this on what I’ve seen of both sides to his nature and identity from ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. And to me, he is a mark of the early world-building. That of which was before the show found it’s footing and it’s stride. Before they knew where they wanted to go with it and what they wanted to do with it. Angel/Angelus is not the norm, he is the anomaly.
Spike is the example of what a vampire really is when there’s an existential crisis on what it’s supposed to be, on what it believes it should be. The only difference is that Spike is the one vampire that truly embraced vampirism as opposed to demonism. And any further humanizing of the character was based on his original being or his original incarnation of being. It is external influence that pulled that truth out of him. It wasn’t created because of it. It was already there.
I’d just like to remind people that when Spike’s soul was restored, his name remained SPIKE. He didn’t suddenly become reborn again and be assigned a new name the way Angelus did when his soul was restored. There was no curse. There was only a transition.
How does this explain all the other vampires that are not major significant characters? It doesn’t other than to say that they’re not major significant characters. Nobody bloody cares about them for them to have any reason to be given in-depth characterization that’s afforded Angel, Spike, Druscilla and Darla. The reason why these characters are the characters we constantly debate about is because they’re the only version of vampire we actually give a shit about. If we spent more time with other vampires, we’d notice the very same in them as we do the Fanged Four. But as far as I see it, the only vampire excluded from the true vampire lore and is the immediate outlier…. Is Angel. We should not base our debates of the vampire lore on his situation because his situation is a rarity in that he is the only VAMPIRE that has a split personality disorder. That is literally thought of and treated as TWO ENTITIES in one body. As the Two Ships of Theseus. The only others that are are not vampires. So your true comparison to Angel/Angelus is Ben/Glory. Every other vampire remains much the same. Their human psyche is intact. It hasn’t separated from their body despite missing their soul. It is only external influence and condition that changes them which is very much how it also works with animals.
The OG vampire lore doesn’t work within the storytelling framework of any other vampire but no-name ones because the only form of “possession” that occurs for a major significant vampire character with which to tell a story with is with Angel. Angelus being cursed with a soul is the possession. Angel is not who/what is being possessed. Angelus is. Angel’s true nature is to be evil, not to be good. But regardless of that… if ALL vampires in the Buffyverse were a possession, that would mean that a vampire retains it’s human psyche while a demon with amnesia comes in and relearns and conditions itself as that human psyche and that would be the “vampire”. Which would make it less of a possession that is happening and more of cloning. A recreating of what the vampire was as the human. That makes no sense!
The simplistic approach is that a vampire is a person that died that suddenly now has selfish and chaotic impulses because it is an animalistic creature not really all that dissimilar to a werewolf. And… done.

100+ Films of 1952
Film number 108: Jack and the Beanstalk
Release date: April 12th, 1952
Studio: Warner Bros.
Genre: comedy fantasy, family
Director: Jean Yarbrough
Producer: Alex Gottlieb, Pat Costello, Bud Abbott, Lou Costello
Actors: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Buddy Baer, Dorothy Ford, Shaye Cogan
Plot Summary: Jack lives in a fairytale village with his mother, who has him sell their cow for money. He ends up with magic beans instead, and one becomes a beanstalk that grows high in the sky to the land of a great Giant. The Giant recently kidnapped his friends and his cow, so Jack climbs up the stalk to save them.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***
This just baaarley gets three stars from me. It was much like Lost in Alaska, their other film from 1952- it was a decently made lower budget comedy propelled by the famous duo. Some of the humor isn’t really my cup of tea, but I can appreciate that they are good at it. I probably enjoyed this one more than Lost in Alaska because it was more breezy and silly.
The Good:
Lou Costello. He had much more time to shine alone in this one, and I found him very endearing and cute again. Even when he’s doing the most lowbrow kind of stuff, you can’t help but like him.
This was technically a musical because there were several songs in it. They were really silly and cheesy in a fun way. The lyrics were just goofy. In a romantic ballad we heard- “Darling, my darling darling...” and at the end when the Giant died- “We sing tra-la-la-la-la! He’s perpidicu-lah-lah-lah!"
The bean stalk looked pretty cool.
I loved Dorothy Ford as Polly the housekeeper. She was 6’2” in real life and really striking.
A scene where the 6’2” Dorothy Ford dances with the 5’5” Lou Costello. That was a big highlight of the film for me. Even the visual gag of their height difference made me giggle. Ford was probably wearing heels or lifts, because Costello barely reached her shoulder.
I found the talking wilderness animals surprisingly funny.
It was just good light-hearted fun. I think kids would have liked it a lot.
The Bad:
First- spoiler- what happened to Polly (Dorothy Ford) and Henry the cow at the end?? Everyone else escaped the Giant’s castle! They were two of my favorite characters, and I kept expecting them to appear in the final scene, but they didn’t. What the hell happened to them? Come on!!
The opening and closing “modern” section. It was totally needless and not very funny. It openly copied The Wizard of Oz in that the modern section was filmed in sepia and the fantasy world was in color. And the people in the fantasy world all had real life counterparts.
The two romantic leads. The Prince, James Alexander, looked creepy and had weird makeup on. His eyes looked just like the terrifying Kenneth Copeland’s, so I just couldn’t deal with him. The Princess, Shaye Cogan, was stunningly beautiful with a singing voice to match, but her acting skills were minimal.
The actual Giant was a little underwhelming. He was just a tall guy wearing shoes with lifts- probably around 7 feet? I expected him to be much much bigger.
The sets in the sky kingdom weren’t the greatest. The Castle was kind of blah and generic.
Bud Abbott didn’t have much to do.
Sometimes the humor was just too broad for me.
Again, what happened to Polly and Henry?!

The Colorado Kid | Stephen King | Pubished 2005 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
Stephen King’s bestselling unsolved mystery, The Colorado Kid - inspiration for the TV series Haven - returns to bookstores for the first time in 10 years in an all-new illustrated edition.
On an island off the cost of Maine, a man is found dead. There’s no identification on the body. Only the dogged worked of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues, and it’s more than a year before the man is identified. And that’s just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammet’s The Maltest Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world’s great storytellers presents a moving and surprising tale whose subject is nothing less than the nature of mystery itself.
In the coast of Maine is a small island called Moose-Lookit Island. Typically not welcoming of outsiders, Stephanie McCann has been welcomed by the local newspapers editors, Dave Bowie and Vince Teague, both older gentlemen who had been in the newspaper industry for several years.
During a lunch meeting with a reporter for the Boston Globe hunting for stories for an unexplained mystery series, he leaves in a huff when he realizes that Vince and Dave don’t have any to provide for him that hadn’t already been told.
When they return to their offices, though, they discuss the discovery of the Colorado Kid. In April of 1980, two local teenagers, one of which would later become the town’s mayor, found an unidentified man on the beach early in the morning. Looking as if he had been dead for several hours by this point, the proper authorities are called in and it was determined that he died from aspyhixation by choking, which led to a stroke (or the other way around, it appears). He was found with a piece of steak lodged in his throat, with a few bites also found inside his stomach, along with the contents of what he had for dinner.
Evidence was taken from the scene, though he went identified for around 16 months or so before items from the evidence led to his identification. A young man who was working with the Attorney General’s office remembered a pack of cigarettes that had been found, though the tax stamp on the bottom didn’t resemble that of the state of Maine’s. There’s was an ink stamp, whereas the stamp on the pack found hadn’t been. Vince got in contact with the right people, and it was confirmed that the stamp on the bottom came from Colorado.
They ran his death portrait to every newspaper in Colorado, until eventually they got a call from the man’s wife. She explained that he had been missing since April of the year before, and she is certain that the man in the photo is her husband. She is flown to Maine, where Vince picks her up and helps her with the proper process of identifying and exhuming his body, and it is confirmed then that the man was a Mr. James Cogan, an advertising artist that lived in a mountain town outside of Boulder, who left behind his wife Arla and a young son named Michael.
Despite having identified him, they are still left with the reason behind his East coast visit. Arla could not shed any light on why he had been there, as he had departed their home for his office in Boulder that Wednesday morning, and had spoken with a colleague of his at 10:00 or so that morning before simply disappearing and reappearing on the coast. They have surmissed that he had chartered a flight from Colorado to Maine, and then was driven from Bangor to the coast, where he had dinner at 5:30 P.M. at a restaurant where a waitress remembered seeing him, before taking a ferry across the waters at 6:00 P.M. before being found on the beach 12 hours later.
Vince and Dave have been plagued with this story for over 25 years, and their questions are left largely unanswered. They never found out why he was there, and the questions have always bothered them. They shared this story with Stephanie, though a newcomer, has been accepted into the locals and she will remain there after her internship is complete a few months later in October. They didn’t want to share this story for the series as they would be looking for a beginning, a middle and an end, as many news stories do. Those are the happy ones with conclusions. This story did not have a happy ending, as there was never any ending at all, as the questions still burned them so many years later as to why the Colorado Kid was even in Maine to begin with.
I wanted to read this story because I was an avid fan of the television show, Haven, that uses this book’s premise for many plot points of the show. A lot of it is changed, though much remains the same, even if Stephanie’s character is replaced with a character named Audrey, and the Colorado Kid ends up being her son (SPOILER SPOILER). The book however, leaves much to the imagination and isn’t your typical Stephen King horror novel. I gave it 5/5 stars, and that concludes my May readings for the month!

unpopular opinion: s3 finale sucked and nathan wuornos was ruined. he wanted audrey to stay, i get it, she would lose her memories, it’s selfish but understandable if only james wasn’t dying and the barn could fix him. he seemed unbothered by meeting his son to begin with, the awkwardness is fitting to nathan’s character but not saying a word while he and audrey walked on him and sarah? just letting her go and see that? also he was cheating on jordan at the time! besides one mention in s4 he never talked about james.  nathan ruined it without hesitation so when, in one episode, he says to a father his son “disappeared or maybe even dead because of him” i can’t really feel sorry for him. the haven gang never harmed innocents and always tried to save them, but his own son? he goes blindsighted because it’s audrey, but real good guys respect their partners choices, they don’t tell their best friend to jump inside a disappearing building, and consider the wellbeing of the long lost son audry was clearly so happy to see. like audrey in 4.10 when nathan had a family and was happy in trouble-free haven. he was being really selfish, even when he wanted to get killed it was because it made *him* feel guilty so many people have dies
