I really enjoy watching and analyzing The Bear. On my rewatches, I have noticed and written about numerous themes, connections, lines, acting choices and plot points that weave and connect together in beautiful ways. Rewatching and analyzing often exposes other things as well. Some are a little odd to me, to the point where I made the list below:
Season 1
The Timeline. I’m not going to fully get into this, but the timeline on this show is confusing. I think it’s because they shot the pilot episode in the summer and the rest of S1 and all of S2 in the winter/early spring. I’ll just leave it at that, but for example, how we get from a few months after Michael’s death (February) to his birthday, (in November) over the span of the first 3 episodes doesn’t gel with the dialogue. The prop of the card that shows Michael’s birthday and day he passed is what I am basing the dates on. Was this a props error? The pilot is so clearly summer in Chicago and in the rest of the episodes in S1 it is clearly freezing.
Cigarettes. Throughout S1 snd S2, the cigarettes Carmy smokes vacillate between light cigarettes with white filters, and regular ones with dark beige filters. No one just switches between lights and regulars who seriously smokes, as Carmy does, making it feel like a props mistake.
Chain. Carmen is wearing a complexly different chain necklace in the pilot episode vs the rest of S1 and S2.
Hand washing/double spoon use. The scene where Carmy “washes” his hands at the end of 1x2 is bizarre. He puts soap on them and then dries them off immediately with paper towels without using water again or looking down. It’s the only time we ever see him wash his hands so it really sticks out as abnormal and totally out of character. He’s a smoker and coming from fine dining and there has been/still is a pandemic. He would have washed his hands throughly here to show how much attention to detail his character puts into his work. Michael, by contrast, is seen washing his hands fully in 1x6. Was this an editing error? It might have been. It really took me out of the scene the first time I saw it. After he does this, he uses a spoon to taste something, puts it into his mouth, and then uses that same spoon to move chicken in a pan. I think this was an editing mistake, like maybe they cut out the part where he uses a new spoon, but as is, it makes it look like Carmy doesn’t care about cleanliness, which, after watching him obsessively scrub the kitchen on his hands and knees earlier in the episode, makes no sense.
Possible contamination. Carmy touches his face while making hotdogs in 1x4. Uncle Jimmy is telling a story and he’s laughing and it’s clearly very cold outside, but he wipes at his nose and face and then shakes his hands off over the food he’s prepping. This was one of the very, very few moments to me that felt out of character. Carmy would have reflexes to not contaminate food from his years of service, especially the years under microscope scrutiny from the chef in New York.
Camera is visible. You can see the camera person in 1x8 in the reflection of the glass door when Carmy goes to open the door and get the order from the delivery guy.
Carmy’s fingernails. Throughout S1, and in S2, Carmy’s fingernails are trimmed, buffed, neat and clean. I looked for this in every scene, as it helps us understand his character and how seriously he takes his himself and his craft. It also provides a sharp contrast to Richie (in S1), whose nails are visibly dirty, causing us to distrust him and not take him seriously as someone who should be handling food. However, in arguably the most important moment of S1, when Carmy texts Sydney, and then opens the envelope from Mikey, his thumbnail on his left hand is too long and looks unclean. Actor’s nails fall under the jurisdiction of the makeup department so I’m confused why they didn’t realize there was going to be a major closeup on his hands in this scene and fix them if they were not camera ready. It’s the only time in S1 or S2 his nail looks off and it’s an extreme closeup. I noticed it the first time I watched this scene and it really took me out of the moment. I cringe every time I see that nail. In the next scene when he’s making the spaghetti, this nail is neat and clean again, so to me, the prior scene was a mistake.
Season 2
Lockers. Carmy has switched his locker to the other side of the wall. In S1, his is on the left. In S2, it’s on the right. Usually your locker is YOUR locker. This was odd, but it set up the Sydney/Carmy scene well and maybe Carmy moved to be closer to Mikey’s locker.
Tattoos. You can see the actor Jeremy Allen White’s personal E.Z. tattoo on his arm when he’s in his apartment before he sits in the chair in 2x1. There’s no makeup on it at all. It’s completely visible. This tattoo is not Carmy’s, it’s the actor’s, and I think he has said before that it’s his mother’s initials. This tattoo has always been covered with makeup. I don’t understand how this oversight from the makeup department made the final cut.
Different vs differently. In 1x5, Sydney tells Carmy about her catering company, Sheridan Road. “Not a night goes by that I don’t think about what I could have done different.” In 2x3, Natalie tells Carmy, “I don’t want to be treated any different.” In both instances the word differently should have been used. It’s not proper English otherwise. The characters don’t need to speak perfect English, that’s not the point, but these episodes were written by the same person, so that might be why both characters use the same word.
Area codes. I am so baffled by this, I’m still thinking about it. In the beginning of 2x6, there’s a sign on the wall in Donna’s house with everyone’s name and phone number written on it. On this prop, the name Michael is actually spelled wrong, as “Micheal”. Carmen and Michael’s area codes are both listed as (913). Carmen’s area code is well established as 773, which he literally has tattooed on his arm, and it’s in the script, as he verbally says his phone number to the fridge guy and then Claire in 2x2. Michael’s area code was (847), per the script, via Richie to Uncle Jimmy in 1x4. The (913) area code is for Kansas. I don’t understand why the area codes would be for Kansas and not the ones that we already established were theirs, for Chicago, and the suburbs of Chicago, 5 years before present day in the timeline of The Bear.
Eleven Madison PARK. Richie insults Carmy in 1x1, calling him “Eleven Madison Park dic@&ead.” In the coda to this line in 2x8, Carmy calls Richie “Eleven Madison dic@&ead.” Park should have been part of that line for it to fully connect, as it’s the name of the NYC restaurant where Carmy worked, and he’s saying the line, so it should have been the same here for consistency.
The card from Michael to Carmen “I love you dude. Let it rip” is written differently in S1 and S2. The handwriting doesn’t match. It looks like a different prop.
Left handed staff/actors. In 2x9, Carmy freaks out about the pan station. “These should be on the right side because we are all right handed.” This line of dialogue is not true of the actors on this show. If you watch closely in season 1 and 2, BOTH actors portraying Tina and Ebrahim are actually left handed. The actor playing Manny is left handed, and the actor playing Richie favors his left hand as well. This line should have been cross checked with the various Actor’s actual physicality because it doesn’t really make sense.
Food runners. Why are the food runners not running food in 2x10? They stand in the background most of the time and don’t move, even when Carmy and Sydney are yelling for hands. No one moves when Carmy says he needs hands please for PX table 31, Claire’s table, but three food runners are standing directly behind him and completely ignore him. It’s their first night on the job and Carmy is the Executive Chef and owner. They should have helped run food or not been in the shot because it’s confusing.
I really enjoy analyzing this show, and see and greatly appreciate all of the creativity, energy, effort, talent and passion that has clearly been poured into it by the entire creative team. This post is not meant to do anything other than point out the few moments I noticed that made me pause and say, wait, what?
Are there any others that you noticed?

I really don’t get how you can argue all this stuff about how you supposedly knew thr whole plan when there’s literally dozens of people who know what your real source for the pilot script was , and never mind the fact the pilot script itself shows the original framing plan was to have dean in the bunker
The real source for the pilot script?
You mean the one that was handed to me in a public room, that I immediately deduced was real? That you idiots immediately argued, right there, it wasn't real, and I told you it was real, because I'd seen the older scripts, and you were wrong? And you were wrong? Increasingly loudly for 8 months, hoping people would forget WHY you wanted me to be wrong, as it pointed back to me having the old writers drafts like I said at the time?
*you* guys were the ones insisting I wrote the Net 4 draft. I said, and I speak verbatim, "You guys literally do not understand the irony of this, but no, this particular draft was not from me, but from someone else in the fandom."
Then, to bury it, *you* made more noise accusing me of writing the Net 4 Draft, which I clarified I did not, and divided from older drafts and arenas?
That mess?
You can't figure out how that ties into The Grand Plan? You can't see how that directly connects to me telling you before Deadline ever did that there was a John and Mary prequel in development that was actually a delivery of Dean's final peace, which you guys also spent months arguing against, and are going to pretend you can't see the relation to 1x8 et al?
ok.
yeah sure. Good job everyone. You really cracked this nut.
Comical. Sad. And pitiful on your parts.
Believe whatever the fuck you want. We don't care. It's not about credit, fame, glory, or that. It's about the goddamn results, and it's about the fact that we're going where we're going, no matter what your opinions are or what you believe, and that's reality.
Nobody cares what you believe, Karen. You don't matter.

A few snippets to share this week! I usually wait until Sunday but I couldn’t 😂 too excited:
Sunshine Twins fic:
Rey, meanwhile, went up to find Luke himself sitting in the cockpit, and she scowled. “If you think I’m trusting you to fly us out of here—”
“If it makes you feel better,” Luke interrupted, “I do have off-planet piloting experience. I blew up the kriffing Death Star, remember? Rodia was just a fluke because of the time travel.”
Rey huffed. “For the third time, this is not—”
“I can get us off-planet,” Luke continued, “and somewhere safer, I promise. But a co-pilot would be much appreciated…especially one with piloting experience,” he added with a hopeful smile.
She sighed. They didn’t have time to argue, and a pilot with experience flying in actual space was better in this situation. “Just until we get out of this.”
“Fine by me.”
Oh Rey 😂 so very stubborn! But that’s part of what I love about her 💞
Morgan Wells 1x8 to 1x14 fic:
“Hmm. Well, as her father, I must admit to being biased in her favor. But keep trying, Barry. Morgan isn’t the type to hold grudges…she’ll come around, I’m sure.”
“Yeah.” Barry sounded more hopeful now. “Thanks, Dr. Wells.”
Morgan frowned at that. She appreciated the sentiment on her dad’s part, but she didn’t appreciate him undermining what she’d told Barry at the Christmas party. More to the point, she’d hoped that she and Barry could just go on as they were, while he accepted that things would never be the same as they used to be, but now…
Then again, it’s not like he took Dad’s advice about Snart. Maybe he’ll ignore it for this too.
One may ask “but why would Eowells want to patch things up between Barry and Morgan?” To which I say…he doesn’t like doing it, but Barry’s love makes him stronger, and if he’s this worried about Morgan…it’s in Eowells’s best interest to patch that up quickly before it can seriously hinder Barry.

Stefan saying "Rippers don't stop," on once he starts feeding he can't stop and continuing to sleep with Elena without telling her makes their "sex" more disgusting. He wasn't compelled when he almost bit her in 1x18 unlike 3x5. When he almost killed Amber in 1x19 he didn't stop until Damon and Elena intervened, and while Elena's judgment did contribute to his decision to stop, seeing her wasn't enough since he pushed Damon away when he came to stop him. Even Damon's help wasn't enough for him to change since Bonnie had to give him an aneurysm after. People act like Stefan's reluctance at the start to feed on Amber is the only valid emotion when it comes to judging him when he engages in such acts but his cold-heartedness and saying he changed his mind about feeding on Amber when she was trying to run from him are also valid when it comes to judging him. Damon compelled Jessica to get away from him saying she's free to go like Stefan did Amber before Damon changed his mind, but Damon isn't coddled. Amber was said to have lost so much blood that she couldn't clearly remember and tell the Sheriff what happened even though she was never compelled to forget it and it was said it was good the girls got there when they did so she wouldn't die. Stefan usually has a support system when he tries to kill people so even though Amber and Jesse nearly died he was stopped by other vampires like Damon and Caroline. Damon didn't have a vampire as a sober sponsor like Stefan did to stop him from killing Jessica and Jeremy, similar situations as Amber and Jesse. Stefan's selfish fuckass told Amber after he spoke to Elena that she wasn't supposed to find out he was binging on blood after he told Elena he was going to tell her because he felt entitled to his relationship with Elena going his way over hers. There was lack of emotional, physical, and sexual agency for Elrna in that relationship because of his selfishness and lies. In 1x6 outside his house she tells him to let her go, to which he says no, she repeats herself, to which he says please. He follows her home, and when he corners her in her room he says "I would never hurt you. You're safe with me," which parallels what Katherine said in 1x6 after cornering Stefan and him saying "Get away from me," Katherine saying "You're not afraid." Also Katherine saying "You will not tell anyone," parallels Stefan telling Elena "Do not tell anybody," except the violation in Katherine's case comes in compulsion while Stefan threatened Elena to keep his secret saying that her simply knowing it is dangerous, not out of concern for her but himself. Damon wanted Elena to know they were vampires by dropping hints and saying "Stefan finally fessed up," and Stefan knew and said himself that Damon wouldn't kill Elena. If Elena knowing was a danger to her than Damon would have been violent go her the first chance he got but he wasn't until 7 episodes later when Elena betrayed his trust with Stefan and he fed her his blood to get Stefan to give him the grimoire. Elena knowing and being afraid was a threat to Stefan and him wanting to continue a relationship with her in the future was like Stefan knowing and being afraid was a threat to the future Katherine wanted with him. I don't get why Stefan grooming and dating a 17 year old and treating her similarly as Katherine treated him is excused by many for him only. Stefan and the fandom judged Katherine for disregarding his free will but will disregard Elena's. If Stefan cared about her knowing being a threat to her he'd have been the one to break up with her in 1x6, and he tried to talk her into being with him in 1x8 but she didn't give in saying that around him people die. She was generous by lying to the Sheriff about his role in Vicki's death, but when she told him she couldn't be with him he tried to get her to go out with him and talk she had to tell him again to stay away.
I always tell fans to pay mind to Damon's comment in the pilot episode because he's being honest. He knows that Stefan can teke him when he's on human blood. That's why he has Elena vervaining him in 1x19. He can't take Stefan physically, so he has Elena take him emotionally. He only fights Stefan when he has to. Damon is often fighting dirty because he can't rely solely on his strength. So he is the type to stab Stefan and Kol with a stick.
I agree about Damon. This is where he and Stefan are different. Stefan had Lexi by his side since 1864. Damon relied solely on himself their entire existence. While he did meet people like Sage and Enzo, he remained self reliant. No one stopped him from doing what he does. Stefan could've stopped him in New York in 1977, but he sent Lexi in his place. If not for her, the Gemini witches would've put Stefan in a prison world like their mother because he never would've stopped. So when fans debate Damon's ability to change, I always point out this difference. Damon had no one until he met Elena. While it took Lexi 30 years to get Stefan straight after one ripper binge, it took Elena less than ten years to get Damon ready to become human. Elena was always better than Lexi because unlike Lexi, she considered both brothers. She never put Stefan over Damon or Damon over Stefan. She wouldn't be the type to tell Damon that Stefan is better off without him.
Damon wanted Elena to know they were vampires because he was being honest about wanting her to get everything she's looking for. He refused to let her make choices in the dark. it takes her into the third season to see in Stefan what she sees in Damon in the first season. And the brothers are written in parallel that way. It takes her into the third season to see in Damon what she sees in Stefan in the first season. That's why she falls for Damon and un-falls for Stefan. So when Stefan rips into her and drops her into a hospital bed, fans know exactly what Damon does to her on an emotional level. He has the capacity to ruin her the way Katherine ruined him, but he loves her too much to do that. She's written between brothers, so despite loving Damon as much as Damon loved Katherine, she has the capacity to live in denial for 145 years jus like Stefan did. Turning her into a vampire was the only way to get Elena to live true to herself. She didn't just want it, she died for it.

Episode 13: Wait and Hope
Tumblr media
Here are my thoughts
SPOILERS AHEAD
1:00 - I love this scene. I know it’s all in Martin’s head but I really wish Malcolm was this honest with Martin all the time. Plus it shows that Martin is aware, on some level, that he’s been hurting Malcolm for years.
2:19 - Okay. A couple of things here: 1) Something about having Under Pressure play right now is genius. It’s fun yet truthful. 2) Listening to Mr. David and Martin’s exchange is really interesting to me. It’s almost like Mr. David is friends with Martin. I mean Mr. David is being way nicer than a professional respect requires. AND 3) Watching Tom Payne do planks/yoga is very attractive. Dang.
3:00 - So, we get a close up of 5 thin, tall pill bottles here. In about 4 seconds, when Malcolm is throwing pills into his mouth we will see 4 pill bottles of varying heights and thicknesses. So one of two things is happening 1) these scenes weren’t filmed on the same day and someone in the props department goofed or 2) Malcolm takes 9 different pill bottles worth of meds and this is just round two. BUT considering the 4 bottles of varying thicknesses reappear when Jessica shows up - I’m going to assume this is some minor on-set goof that they figured no fan would be neurotic enough to care about. They were wrong. I care deeply. In fact - I really want to know exactly what pills Malcolm takes.
3:11 - So is Malcolm’s fridge empty because he just got out of the hospital? Because there was definitely food in there during 1x5 when he made grilled cheese with Dani. And there were frozen foods in his freezer in 1x8. Does Jessica stock the fridge/freezer? Is that why there’s usually food? Because it’s cannon that Malcolm doesn’t eat much... I’m way too invested in the contents of Malcolm’s fridge. Furthermore - I love the fact that Malcolm reaches for a handful of of licorices from that massive container - it’s just weird enough to be completely endearing and totally in character for Malcolm. It implies that there is no other dry, perishable foods in his loft - because you know, he could’ve eaten some dry-cereal or instant oatmeal here. But nope. The boy goes for candy. Why do I love this dysfunctional lunatic? He can barely keep himself alive.
3:21 - I love that Malcolm watches Ainsley’s reports like a Good Big Brother. I mean, given Malcolm’s job, he probably would watch the news daily regardless of who was reporting it. But there’s something just so sweet about the fact that he watches Ainsley instead of any of the other reporters. Ugh - something about it just warms my cold, dead soul.
3:41 - hahahaha Ok. We all love the white suit because it’s weird, funny as hell, and just the right amount of attractive - but why does no one talk about the shoes? Malcolm isn’t wearing socks. He’s become one of those hipster dudes who wear fancy shoes without socks. I’m loving it. ALSO why is no one admiring Jessica? This woman is so extra that she knows her grown-ass son’s suit measurements and goes to buy him a suit that fits perfectly without his knowledge. Then she forces him to wear the white suit out of the house. It’s just. Wow. I love her.
3:50 - I love that Jessica totally only bought that suit for Malcolm because she didn’t think he would be caught dead anywhere near the precinct in it.
4:09 - Check out the look that Malcolm gives Jessica here. He’s sad. He’s sad and feeling guilty that he’s worrying his mother. That’s why he put on the ridiculous suit for her. That’s why he’s not getting mad at her for waltzing into his apartment unannounced (again). That’s why he’s letting her fuss over of him. Because he wants to make her feel better.
4:28 - This. This is why Jessica is being extra. She knows that if Malcolm is left alone he will skip his flight in order to achieve a “staycation in New York”. And if he takes a staycation he will inevitably end up hanging out at the precinct; working. She’s being extra but it’s justified - she’s trying to ensure that Malcolm takes care of himself. She said it herself - she doesn’t need him to love her, she just needs him alive. Right now - Malcolm is scaring her because she’s not so sure he wants to live. She’s not an idiot, she knows that Malcolm won’t take care of himself unless she literally removes him from the country, effectively taking away all of his opportunities to work. So. She. Does.
4:31 - Soooo is no one going to talk about the fact that Jessica is pushing Malcolm out the door - with luggage - while his meds are sitting on his counter?!? Has she checked that he has meds packed in secondary containers? Just seems like something that Jessica would stress about, especially in Malcolm’s current mental state.
4:46 - I love this. Jessica called Gil to come and pick up Malcolm. The one person she knows Malcolm won’t fight about his vacation. He’ll whine but he won’t fight Gil - not after their fight last episode. This also implies that Gil and Jessica had a long discussion about forcing Malcolm to take a vacation due to his current mental state. They totally had a parenting conversation about their grown-ass child and I am living for it. I also want to hear it.
4:54 - I’m not sure we’ve seen Gil this happy since he greeted Malcolm during the pilot. It’s precious. When Gil says he’s proud of Malcolm I’m pretty sure my heart grew two sizes. Why can’t we have more soft moments like this?
5:00 - This scene in the car is awesome. Malcolm is pouting like a petulant child and Gil is doing everything in his power to convince Malcolm this vacation will be good for him. It reminds me of a parent trying to get their toddler to eat vegetables.
5:06 - “We all just want you to be happy.” Did you hear that? It’s the sound of my heart racing with joy. Malcolm looks confused and hurt after Gil says it. Almost like he’s not sure how to be happy or who this “we” includes. Gil can see right through it - look at the concern on his face.
5:15 - hahaha When Malcolm hears the word “DOA” his face lights up like a Christmas tree and Gil’s contorts with annoyance. You can almost hear an Gil think “This is why we can’t have nice things” in an exasperated voice....also it is JT’s voice on the radio right?
5:22 - I love how Gil caves here. He starts the conversation stern but you can see that the minute that Malcolm says “I’m taking care of myself” he starts to waver. Even though you can tell that Gil knows Malcolm is lying through his teeth it’s the sincere desperation and hope in Malcolm’s eyes that make Gil cave.
6:04 - haha this is so great. I love watching Dani and JT tease Malcolm because a) it’s funny but b) it’s making Malcolm happy. Look at Malcolm’s smiles. He’s so happy to be included in this banter and he knows they’re teasing him out of love rather than hatred. Plus look at how amused Gil looks watching his kids interact. ALSO - side note - JT’s outfits are awesome in this episode.
6:45 - Can we all just take a minute to appreciate how far JT and Malcolm’s relationship has come? JT couldn’t stand Malcolm in 1x1. Now they’re casually squatting next to each other talking about guns. JT even looks impressed when Malcolm mentions owning a gun like the one they’re looking at. You can see that this conversation will continue later. JT wants to know more about Malcolm’s weapon collection. My heart is full.
6:47 - Edrisa teasing Bright is a real turning point for her character. It’s hilarious. Plus, watching how amused JT, Gil, and Dani are at Malcolm’s expense is awesome BUT 1x1 Edrisa would’ve never made jokes like this about Malcolm. She’s getting over her school girl crush and their relationship is developing past professional and into friendship. I’m a fan.
7:14 - How much time has passed since the end of 1x12? Malcolm looks a lot better than he did last episode. He looks happier, more relaxed, way less manic....and you know, no cast on his hand.
7:18 - Look at Gil when Malcolm says “The Tale of Monte Cristo”. That’s a look of recognition. Gil knows that Malcolm loved that book. I want to know why. We know that Martin was the one to read the book to Malcolm. In about ten minutes Gil will ask Malcolm to tell him about the plot because Gil doesn’t seem to be familiar with it. Did Gil watch a mute Malcolm read it countless times after Martin’s arrest? How does Gil know that Malcolm loves this book?
7:55 - Look at Malcolm’s face when Gil tells him that he’s still going on vacation. He looks so annoyed at the fact that Gil is going to take away his fun. I almost feel bad for him - but Gil is right, our boy needs a vacation.
8:00 - I don’t care if it’s crazy that Malcolm would hear the click of the landmine and react before our US armed forces veteran JT. I don’t care if it’s insane that the whole room didn’t blow up while shaky hands was holding the unstable landmine. I don’t care that there is no way JT got that vest on Malcolm without having Malcolm accidentally trigger the mind. I don’t even care that the fact that Malcolm answers his phone without blowing up is ridiculous. I love this scene. It’s amazing.
8:24 - Look at how panicked and scared everyone is. Look at how our sweet, neurotic Edrisa takes charge of her medical staff - this is a side of her I’d like to see more of. Check out the fear present in Gil, JT, and Dani. They’re not scared for themselves - they’re scared for Malcolm.
8:40 - Gil’s fury and concern here are perfect. He’s scared out of his mind that everyone in the room is going to blow up but he’s still present enough to be pissed that Malcolm is making jokes about his own life. Even though Malcolm often uses humour as a way to mask his pain and fear. It’s just confirming Gil’s belief that Malcolm’s mental health is in shambles, that Malcolm needs a vacation, and that Malcolm is seriously depressed right now.
8:43 - Malcolm’s brave mask is slipping. He’s looking more and more scared as this scene progresses. Look at the utter disbelief and horror on Dani, JT, and Gil’s faces when Malcolm suggests that they all leave him to die. They know he’s in a bad place mentally but they’re still shocked that he’s being so caviler about the importance of his life. They’re horrified that Malcolm still doesn’t truly understand how important he is to their team.
9:00 - Are JT, Gil, and Dani even processing what Malcolm is saying? They all look so shocked and concerned that Malcolm is still trying to talk about the case when he’s literally holding a live mine that I’m pretty sure they aren’t truly processing to Malcolm’s words. But seriously, look at the terror and concern in their eyes. It’s heartbreaking.
9:20 - Look at the way that Gil has to lead Dani out of the room. She’s frozen in panic and fear. Gil sees it and thinks “Oh hell no. I’m not losing 2 kids today.”
9:26 - Malcolms eyes here. That is mania. That is terror. That is the beginning of a panic attack. My heart is breaking but I’m also living for the whump.
9:34 - More proof that Malcolm is suicidal. He thinks he’s going to die but he picks up a call from his serial killing, manipulative father who has, for all intents and purposes, scarred Malcolm and emotionally abused him? Yo. That’s not right. ....but I will say that the fact that Under Pressure starts playing again does something good to my heart.
9:49 - More proof that Martin is a monster. His son tells him that he’s holding a live mine and Martin is more excited than concerned. Hell - Mr. David looks more concerned about Malcolm than Martin does. It takes a minute for Martin to realize that Malcolm might die. I will give Martin some credit here - once the realization sets in he does look a little scared that his son might die. Once again, I’m having a hard time figuring out if Martin actually cares about his son.
10:33 - He. Jumps. Out. A. Window. What a move.
10:48 - I love the team’s reaction to Malcolm falling on the Le Mans. They all look concerned about Malcolm BUT they also each have different secondary reactions. JT looks impressed. Gil looks like he can’t figure out if he’s panicking more over his car or his kid. Dani just looks shocked.
11:00 - That’s pure unfiltered relief on the team’s faces when they see that Malcolm is conscious, lucid, and talking. I’m in love. The only problem I have with this scene is that no one even mentions any injuries that Malcolm inevitably got from this for the remainder of the entire episode.
11:22 - Why is Martin allowed in these therapy sessions? They just feed his narcissism and give him an audience. He doesn’t let anyone else talk.
11:40 - I love that even the other serial killing prisoners look done with Martin.
12:12 - 1. Poor Hector. 2. Hector is “always Malcolm” OMG. How often does Martin turn these therapy sessions into a fantasy production of his relationship with Malcolm?!?! THIS IS NOT HEALTHY WHY IS THE PRISON ALLOWING THIS!??
13:30 - Can we all just take a moment to revel in the fact that Martin Whitly is such a bad person that even Hector - a prisoner in a serial killer prison - is afraid of Martin. I don’t blame Hector either. Look at how downright nasty Martin gets when things aren’t going his way.
13:48 - soooo everyone changed between the crime scene and coming to the precinct? JT used to be wearing a burgundy shirt, Gil was wearing a black (maybe navy?) turtle neck and Dani was wearing a green T-shirt (not the green blouse she’s wearing now). With Malcolm it makes sense. Did everyone else just change because they were dusty? At 18:26 you can see that they all have different jackets too...Ok. I’ll accept it....WAIT. I assume Dani, JT, and Gil have changes of clothes at the precinct? Does Malcolm too? Or is Malcolm wearing what he had packed for his vacation?
13:53 - Poor Gil. He loved that car. Look how sad he is. :( Look at how guilty Malcolm looks about it in the background. He looks so sad and scared. He’s looking at Gil like he’s waiting to get screamed at. :( I mean Gil’s obviously also upset that he watched Malcolm throw himself out a window but I don’t think Malcolm sees that.
14:15 - hahaha Malcolm is getting so excited about this story and Gil just does not have the patience for one of Malcolm’s manic rants right now. Check out Dani - she is living for Gil’s annoyance at Malcolm’s rant.
14:44 - “It’s my father.” This is concerning on a couple of fronts. It’s concerning because of how completely drained Malcolm looks when he says it. Malcolm just looks done which is scary because not 2 minutes ago he was bouncing around with energy. That dramatic of an energy change that quickly is not healthy. Our boy needs a vacation. Also, check out the fear and concern in Gil’s eyes right after Malcolm tells him that Martin is on the phone. Gil is scared 1) because of Malcolm’s behaviour but 2) because he doesn’t think Malcolm can handle Martin right now - it’s part of the reason that he and Jessica were trying to get Malcolm into a different time zone and country for his vacation. Finally, Dani looks concerned too. I’m honestly surprised she didn’t reach out and hug Malcolm because it looks like she really wants to.
15:00 - Gil was scared before now he’s panicking. You can see that he’s worried about why Malcolm would answer Martin’s phone call when he thought he was going to die. The “I was in a weird place” comment is not reassuring. You can also see that Gil is scared of what the phone call’s effect was on Malcolm’s already fragile mental state. I have a feeling that Malcolm’s current behaviour is reminding Gil of when Malcolm started visiting Martin in prison at age 11 which is scaring Gil too. Gil’s probably just waiting for Malcolm to completely shut down and go mute again.
15:06 - I love this move. JT and Dani are concerned and a little scared to talk on the phone with Martin Whitly but Gil stands firm. He’s not letting his emotionally fragile kid speak to Martin Whitly alone one more time today. He’s too afraid of what Malcolm might do to himself if he’s alone with a Martin phone call. I love the gentle but firm way that Gil reminds Malcolm that he’s not alone. That the team is here for him. I also love that Gil is honest with Malcolm - he doesn’t know if this is a good idea because he’s not sure he should be letting Malcolm talk to Martin at all right now.
15:24 -  I want to point out that Martin is not chained to the wall here even though Mr. David is in the room. Is that allowed? You can actually see his restraints lying on the floor, unattached to him at 16:43. Martin is technically staying behind the line though. I just want more details about when Martin is and isn’t chained to the wall.
15:30 - This conversation is really interesting to me. Malcolm looks uncomfortable throughout the whole conversation. It’s as though he doesn’t want the team to see how dysfunctional his Dad and their relationship truly is. I love how confident and calm Gil acts and how freaked out JT acts. I love that Dani gets over her fear really quickly and is casually looking up stuff on her phone in the middle of the conversation like nothing weird is happening. This woman is a treasure. I find it interesting that Martin is peacocking. He’s having the time of his life because he’s talking to a larger audience and Mr. David looks so done with him. I love that when Malcolm starts showing obvious signs of discomfort and frustration the whole team starts shooting him concerned looks as they watch the effect that Martin has on his son. It’s heartbreaking and perfect. I’m in love.
17:01 - hahaha Malcolm hanging up on Martin is amazing. Malcolm is so scared that his dad is going to ruin his relationship with one of his only friends. Look at Malcolm’s face right after he hangs up - he looks detached and scared. Dani sees it too - check out the way she jokes with Malcolm afterward. She’s trying to reassure him that they’re good and it’s not his fault. Hell - JT and Gil given Malcolm some concerned looks at the end of this scene as well. I think the whole team is riding the “Malcolm is more depressed than usual and he needs a vacation” train.
17:38 - Look at how proud Jessica is here. It’s sweet. I wish she were this affectionate to Ainsley more often. Ainsley needs it.
17:55 - This is heartbreaking. Jessica is so lonely. She misses her social life. She really lost everything except Malcolm and Ainsley when Martin was arrested.
18:25 - This is such a messed up, convoluted set up. The dude is going to die by sword. Dang. This show is weird. Why do I love it so much?
18:55 - When Malcolm takes off his coat, the team looks very concerned and confused. I’m genuinely surprised that Gil didn’t have JT take Malcolm outside with force. They all had looks on their faces that said, “Our boy is passively suicidal. He’s going to try and kill himself again. He must be stopped.” And when Malcolm tells them that he’s going to “save this guy” they look so shocked and resigned like “of course that’s what you’re doing. You are a giant moron with no sense of self-preservation.”
19:37 - “Who are we going to call? The department of falling sword death?” hahaha Gil looks so done with Malcolm’s bullshit.
19:42 - I want more information on this one. Malcolm throws axes...competitively. Why? When and how did he get into it? It’s the most obscure hobby I can think of.
19:56 - Am I supposed to believe that JT and Dani carry wire cutters on all of their cases? Because I don’t.
21:00 - The way that Malcolm looks at Gil here is concerning. It’s almost as though Malcolm is just realizing that Gil is still in the room. Malcolm has become so consumed by the case and his mania that he forgot that Gil was in the room.
23:08 - This is so freaking cute. JT is going to watch the wedding with his wife. She’s going to wear a hat. JT looks so happy and excited about it. I don’t think he cares about the wedding but he cares about his wife and that just makes me happy. And Gil looks like “I work with weirdos. All of them.” My heart. <3
24:16 - Gil is so annoyed that Malcolm is lying to his mom. You can see that Gil is also grateful though - it was his responsibility to make sure Malcolm got on that plane and an angry Jessica is a scary Jessica.
25:00 - William called the George Taylor? Dick move.
25:50 - For once can Gil please just call out Malcolm for projecting his personal issues onto suspects? Can we please just see Gil confront Malcolm about it?
26:20 - Why does Malcolm know so much about bootlegging?
27:00 - “They’re thinking Ecuadorian” hahahahaha OMG. Malcolm needs to stop using humour to hide his pain and fear but it is damn funny.
27:50 - Dang. Gil is a badass. Malcolm looks so grateful to Gil here. <3
28:30 - Gil has had it with Malcolm avoiding his vacation. This is full on dad mode right here. Gil is worried. Malcolm isn’t taking care of himself. Look at the way Gil guides Malcolm out of the precinct. Ugh. I’m in love with the father/son moment here.
29:00 - I love how vulnerable and honest Malcolm consistently acts around Dani. Look at the pain in Malcolm’s face as he admits his problem with going on a vacation. Dani looks sad and concerned for Malcolm but she doesn’t judge him. She just comforts him with a stupid joke and lets him skip his flight. That’s true friendship. I stan this woman.
30:30 - This whole interaction between Martin, Dani, and Malcolm is awesome. Martin is ecstatic with the extra large audience. Dani looks a little scared at first but she really holds her own against Martin. She’s feisty, brave, and determined to do her job. Plus the concerned looks she’s giving Malcolm when he starts talking about the camping trip are A++.
32:05 - I love how angry JT gets during interrogations. This boy really supports the law.
33:15 - Ugh. Martin is so shady. He has a history of acting like a happy, sarcastic, manic dude who may or may not be lying to you. But then in the same conversation he will become either a) angry and threatening or b) serious and kind. It actually looks like he’s trying to convince Dani that Malcolm is the bad guy here - not him. That look of pure hatred that Malcolm shoots back at him is worth it though. Also - hell of a lot of foreshadowing for the next couple of episodes. Like dang.
33:45 - “You can take her shopping my boy. On me!!” ....I’m sorry does this mean that Martin has money somewhere? Jessica was rich. Martin was not. Something tells me that all of Martin’s money should’ve been spent on defence attorneys. Is he getting paid for his consultation work? Is that even a thing? OMG. I have so many questions about this.
34:00 - That is a very angry and disappointed father. Malcolm is in so much trouble for not going on vacation. I’m living for it. I also love that even though Gil is so angry at Malcolm he still reluctantly helps him because Gil is a Good Man of the Law.
34:30 - hahaha this is precious. Malcolm looks so shocked by Dani’s beauty here. Almost like he’s noticing that she’s a woman for the first time. AND Dani’s reaction is so cute. She’s flattered, a little awkward, and a lot happy that he thinks she’s pretty. Also - can we please take a minute to admire how respectful Malcolm is to Dani here. This boy has manners. Dani is not his girlfriend and she’s not an object to be catcalled at. So he calls her “amazing”. Not beautiful or sexy or hot. Amazing. A completely respectful compliment from a man who is not dating Dani. I love this.
35:00 - Well Dani - he was going to tell you that you’re really pretty and he has feelings for you..and you probably guessed that...sorry. I ship Brightwell.
35:17 - hahaha Malcolm is like “Damn. I’ve been exposed.”
37:50 - I feel really bad for Jessica here. Can’t this woman go to one (1) social event in 20 years and have to be judged for Martin’s misdemeanors?!? This poor woman just wants to enjoy legally herself and no one is letting her.
38:06 - JT sent Dani those pics....soooo he’s at home with Tally watching this right? Somehow I think JT’s night has become more interesting than he thought it would be.
38:45 - OMG. This speech was hard to watch. Malcolm is awkward, manic, and totally projecting about his daddy issues. Despite all of this, all I can think about is JT and Tally watching this on a TV somewhere staring at Malcolm in horror/amusement.
39:06 - Poor Jessica. She had one request. “Don’t embarrass me.” She looks utterly mortified.
41:30 - I love this. I love how happy Malcolm just made Jessica. I love watching Jessica be proud of Malcolm. It’s so sweet.
42:10 - This conversation between Malcolm and Ainsley is precious. Ainsley isn’t a bad person. She makes some bad decisions but she loves her family and I’m so proud of her for doing this for her Mom. My heart grew about 6x watching Malcolm be proud of his little sister.
Sorry....this one got REALLY long. Thanks for hanging out if you have. Happy Prodigal Monday!! :D Hope you’re all going to watch 1x19 tonight!

Received this question from @beyondkailani : I'd be interested in your views on the episode titles, especially those released for season 2. I find some of the implications interesting - Sex and Candy being followed immediately by Como la flor for example. Very different in tone!
Okay the episode song titles thing is really fun.  For S01 I was familiar with every song, and yay cause even some of my old favorite bands in there.  Nirvana, Everclear, Aerosmith, and Counting Crows?  Can’t go wrong.  Once the episode with Rosa’s CD happened I realized the episode titles were doing the same thing, but I think for most episodes it’s way more literal than others. Since we’ve made it through S01 already I’m gonna mostly focus on S02.
I made a youtube playlist with lyrics for the sake of review: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLu6cxfqCMO9l7f1jJlLLgCzQELAo7W-BZ
2X1 Stay (I Missed You) (Lisa Loeb) Okay this song, the lyrics are 100% about Michael and Alex.  Lyrics strangely seem like the inevitable moment of real separation between them because Michael is with someone else.  It also smacks a little bit of their reluctance to let go of each other for so long.  Now the title could be a direct point to both Rosa and Max seeming to be dead at the end of S01.  I mean Rosa was dead for 10 years.  She can’t just come back to life, so if she’s going to live, she can’t stay in Roswell. Even if Rosa could stay, what about all her drama with Isobel?  Problems. I mean she was Noah at the time, but Rosa doesn’t know that, so they can either tell her or have it be a constant problem.  There’s also a chance Rosa already knows and she was going to tell her dad, so she doesn’t exactly scream ‘support the alien conspiracy’ to me.
I don't pay attention To the distance That you're running or to Anyone anywhere
I don't understand if you really care I'm only hearing negative, no no no, bad
So I, I turned the radio on, I turned the radio up And this woman was singing my song Lovers in love and the other's run away Lover is crying 'cause the other won't stay
And you said that I was naive And I thought that I was strong I thought, "hey, I can leave, I can leave" Oh but now I know that I was wrong 'Cause I missed you Yeah, I missed you
You said, "you caught me cause you want me And one day I'll let you go" You try to give away a keeper Or keep me 'cause you know you're just so Scared to lose
2X2 Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (Spiritualized) This one is all ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’.  That speaks to me of Michael and Maria.  Could also be a Liz leans on Kyle thing too, assuming Max is still dead.  She does always run back to him, which is super unfair to Kyle.  Maybe it’s also something good for Isobel.  She deserves a new love after everything with Noah, so I’d rather it go that route than either of the other two.
2X3 Good Mother (Jann Arden) This episode will probably revolve around Maria’s mother, and since I predicted before that Michael’s hand and Maria’s desperation to find a cure for her mother could go sideways, I suspect some of that will happen here.
2X4 What If God Was One of Us (Joan Osbourne) As a Malex shipper I admit this is the one that interested me the most since Tyler Blackburn confirmed in this episode Alex gets a new love interest.  I can’t see how this would relate to Alex in anyway, so I was disappointed to not get any further insight.
Now the lyrics make me suspect this is when Michael tells Maria he’s an alien. I mean yeah it’s ‘god’ not ‘alien’ but still some similarity there to me.
If God had a face what would it look like? And would you want to see if, seeing meant That you would have to believe in things like heaven And in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets?
2X5 I'll Stand By You (The Pretenders) I see so many things in this one. -Rosa(assuming she’s still alive)/Liz -Max(if he’s back)/Liz -Max(if he’s back)/Isobel -Michael/Max and/or Isobel. -Kyle always being there for Liz even though he’s sort of a doormat -Kyle and Alex’s rekindled childhood friendship and Kyle being there for Alex -Tragedy strikes so Alex and Maria make up and he’s there for her or vice versa (even though I don’t foresee that lasting)
This could touch so many of the relationships on this show.  It’s too generic to me, and we won’t know until we get there.  Especially since so much will hinge on how they decide to handle Rosa still being alive and Max being dead.
2X6 Sex and Candy (Macy’s Playground) Now I know the word sex is in the title, but I never interpreted this in a literal way. I always assumed it was about eye sex.  His eyes meeting across the room with this fantasy girl and he’s surprised she’s looking back.  So maybe something romantic for Isobel or Alex.  I assume by this point Maria and Michael will be together so nothing to do with them.
Hangin' round downtown by myself And I had so much time To sit and think about myself And then there she was
I smell sex and candy here Who's that lounging in my chair Who's that casting devious stares In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream Yeah mama this surely is a dream
2X7 Como La Flor (Selena) I don’t speak Spanish so I had to check out a translation for this one, but this one breaks my heart.  It’s all about losing the one you love and letting them be happy with someone else. I could almost ugly cry at the implications of this song.
I know you have a new love However I wish you the best If in me, you didn't find happiness Maybe someone else will give it to you
If you saw how it hurts to lose your love With your goodbye, you take my heart I don't know if I can love again Because I gave you all the love I could give
2X8 Say It Ain't So (Wheezer) This song following the last song makes me feel like I am right about the main subject for that episode since it seems to follow the exact same line of thought, but it actually doesn’t.  I suspect Jesse Manes will make an appearance here.  This song is actually about a boy’s fear of his father’s alcoholism.  Then again, if the person who picked it didn’t actually know what the song was really about then yes, it follows the theme of the previous song.
2X9 The Diner So I wasn’t 100% sure which song this was referencing.  My mind immediately went to Tom’s Diner by Suzanne Vega, which I won’t lie, I had stuck in my head for like 6 years because I couldn’t figure out what the song was so I never heard it again.  When I finally did it was sweet relief.  Now there’s a ‘The Diner’ by Kaskade but it’s really just a remix of her song, so I’m going to assume that’s the song.
Now absolutely nothing in this song draws me back to this show.  There is a verse at the very end that seems like it might be significant, but it’s not in the ‘the diner’ version.   Then again, it could just be that the episode takes place surrounding the Crashdown, and the song title is literal.
Oh, this rain It will continue Through the morning As I'm listening To the bells Of the cathedral I am thinking Of your voice And of the midnight picnic Once upon a time Before the rain began
1X10 American Woman (Lenny Kravitz) This seems way out there, but this song makes me think of an outsider government/military type showing up to investigate and stir the pot.
So beyondkailani had directly commented on the contrast between 2X6 and 2X7.  I agree. Different in every way, but I’m not sure it has any meaning beyond trying to find song titles that fit the narrative, but then I think ‘no way’, and I’m sure it must be something more complicated.  I’m still digesting how I feel because the songs do bounce all over the place as far as genre.
In S01 I felt like 75% of the song titles it was just the title that related to the episode.  I’m sure the lyrics also add to it, but mostly I think they were chosen just for their titles.  There are some episodes where it must be the lyrics that had meaning because I can’t see another connection (1X4, 1X10), but for most, it’s just the title.
Per example: -Don’t Speak is a break up song and I suppose you could attach a secondary meaning of the loss of your faith in someone to this song, but that’s a tough sell for me. -Smells like Teen Spirit on the teen revisit episode and I assure you the song is not actually about being a teenager… -I Saw the Sign on the episode where Liz finds a possible motive for why Isobel killed Rosa when this is actually also a break-up song of sorts. -Champagne Supernova on the Gala episode -Creep for the prison and Noah revealing the full extent of his actions (yet the song is actually about wanting someone who you think is amazing to love you but thinking in comparison to them you are nothing).  Now that I’m reconsidering this one the lyrics may also have value here. Originally I hadn’t considered that the lyrics might represent Noah’s feelings about Rosa.  Rosa not being an active character I didn’t consider her as part of the equation the first time.
I added some of these to the playlist at the top as well. 1X1-Pilot 1X2-So Much for the Afterglow 1X3-Tearin' Up My Heart 1X4-Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? 1X5-Don't Speak 1X6-Smells Like Teen Spirit 1X7-I Saw the Sign 1X8-Barely Breathing 1X9-Songs About Texas 1X10-I Don't Want to Miss a Thing 1X11-Champagne Supernova 1X12-Creep 1X13-Recovering the Satellites
Now all of this could be totally moot since most of the songs in S01 are just about the title and I focused on content to make conjectures.  This was really fun for me though.

hi! do you happen to have any like list or rundown of what's going on with the winchesters right now (re: leaks/plot stuff)? I was offline for a bit and now I can't figure out what's going on and you're always the best/most accurate source
oh uh, jesus christ my reporting is admittedly a mess tag wise.
#spnwin general tag, though early on I was using #the winchesters
Filming leaks or other video collections:
I have some by-episode tags. #1x5, #1x6, #1x7, #1x9-- 1x8 was pretty slim and tricky, one could say. Apropros to its guest star.
Scripts:
If you were here for the February pilot script screwery, no other scripts have been publicly released since, but the tag will have a variety of things in vein with the story arenas and general direction/etc.
Business and other:
My #apollo's curveballs tag is pretty prime for old media news I was dropping coming back around again and being publicly confirmed, such as the silent TBS takeover of CW and other influences, or what's influencing their renew/cancel conditions (see also: #ratings)
a few tags like #gray #nexstar etc may be useful as well.
Beyond that good luck with my recent efforts to Tweet It Out, such as my recent Persona posts, or other tags--or the helpful and timely release of 12x22's script and its contextual discussion.

Reading a post.
I have actually thought of this. If Red had wanted to screw up Liz on purpose, he couldn’t have done a much better job.
First phase - disruption of schedule, routine, daily life (pilot)
Second - destabilize sense of self-worth. (I am the puppet of some high-functioning sociopath. I don’t even know what I’m doing here.... am I a good person? I’m not so sure anymore.)
Final phase was to sever the primary emotional bond (I would put this as 5x22 myself, not 1x8. Her bond with Red is now severed.)
Result: snap
It’s probably meaningless, right? Do you think Reddington could have known, when he gave you this case, that you’d find out?
I disagree that Liz is super dark though. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that the person who murdered the adoptive father is darker than the person who got mad about it.
The person who lied his way into a marriage and worked against an FBI task force in service of a criminal boss is darker than the person who got mad about it. Ditto for the person who actually murdered the harbormaster being darker than the person who created the scenario that led to that death, because she was mad about previous bad actions. I don’t understand why Liz is expected to just go ‘ho hum’ when the men in her life cross lines all the time.
The person who lied to everything that moved and left her fake husband in the lurch is darker than the person who just wants answers about the mother she lost.
Liz reacts darkly to the darkness in others. The only thing I’ve seen her get a real kick out of is thievery. And that’s like an innocent, ‘oh this is fun’ kind of deal. She reminds me a lot of Pratt when it comes to that. I’m sure growing up hearing Sam’s stories had a lot to do with it.
She does have darker impulses though. I suspect a super screwed up childhood had a lot to do with it. I’ve yet to see her fully embrace them, but perhaps that’s what’s coming next.

What are examples of Stefan not respecting Elena's decisions and expecting her to submit to his approval? Asking cause people exclusively see her relationship with Damon as one with a power dynamic with Elena having an illusion of control when Stefan and Elena's relationship had a clear power dynamic, especially since it happened when she was a teenager and more depressed over the death of her parents.
There are many issues I have with Stelena. I can start with Elena's sadness. One reference after another, focusing on the fact that she's sad. Elena quite literally referring to herself as gloomy graveyard girl. Sad girls are vulnerable to predators. This is a known fact even in the real world. That's why they investigate the life of a teen victim. Their home life, their school life, their family, their friends. Elena would be considered a "high risk target" in real life. Coach Tanner is being honest when he meets with Jenna. She's trying to raise two teens that just lost their parents, and she's having a difficult time doing it. She has no idea that Jeremy's on drugs, and they're living in the same house. Elena is basically raising her brother, and I see this even in the pilot episode.
Yeah, the fact that Elena just lost both her parents. I consider her still mourning them. Four months isn't that long. In fact, four months is how long Damon spent in the prison world, and Elena was still so unable to deal that she required Alaric to compel her. Girl spent it abusing drugs just like Jeremy did in season one. It's because Stefan is a vampire, and thereby technically dead, that he basically has her mourning all over again. That's what Lexi is referencing in 1x8. "He went through what I imagine you're going through: denial, anger, etcetera." She's referring to the stages of grief, which everyone goes through when someone they love dies. So after she lost both her parents, she has to go through these stages of grief again with her own boyfriend. This was something Stefan chose for her.
We can then talk about Elena's isolation due to the need for secrecy, thus, an issue with dependency. Elena can't talk to Jenna, Jeremy, Matt, Bonnie, or Caroline about her relationship with Stefan because they can't know he's a vampire. It's because of this, Elena can't turn to any of them. She depends solely on Stefan. He is quite literally acting as her aunt, her brother, her best friend, and her boyfriend. She gets advice about her relationship with Stefan from Stefan's best friend rather than her own best friend, and actually has to get permission from Stefan to tell Bonnie the truth so she has someone other than Lexi to talk to. That's how disturbing this is. Then there's Matt and Bonnie. Both commented to the fact that Elena is all about truth and honesty. And there she is, pressured into living a lie, or lose this guy she fell in love with. Her own history teacher, Alaric, confronted her about what it's like to lie to her own friends and family because Stefan manipulated her into a secret vampire relationship. Her own aunt died because she spent two seasons lying to her and keeping secrets from her on Stefan's behalf. This very girl that's all about truth and honesty. And there she is, on an altar of fire... claiming she's the one who failed Jenna when Jenna was supposed to be her guardian ffs!
Stefan's date war against Coach Tanner was a hit for me despite how impressive it was. Stefan isn't 17, he's 162. Coach Tanner is probably in his early 30s, and Stefan is more educated than he is. And it's not just education. It's life experience. A 162 year old male with Stefan's life experience has more power over Elena than he should. You might as well take three 54 year old men and shove them into one body. That's what Elena is dating. Attending high school and college multiple times. Multiple careers. Multiple lives. Most of all, multiple relationships. He's been around long enough to know that a sad girl is a vulnerable girl. He's been around long enough not to treat Elena the way he does, having the very experience she lacks as a 17/18 year old human. Aside from, this is a guy that's ready to settle down, and he's trying to "build a life with" a girl whose life is just starting, and he very much states this himself. "Because I've already lived. 162 years I have lived, and you've barely begun." Stefan wants to talk about their future at the lake house. She's 17 ffs. The only "future" she should be considering at this moment in her life is college and career. 3x1 is Elena's 18th birthday. 3x6 is Stelena's year anniversary of the day they first met in the pilot episode. Fans should consider this when they consider all the bs she went through with him in a single year... when she was only 17.
I consider the first 5 episodes of the series a manipulation, no different than Damon manipulating Caroline. "I have to know her" is control. What about Elena's need to know him? Of course not, let's not think about her. Elena didn't have to know Stefan, and I state this as fact. All she needed was a counselor. A friend. A human she could connect with to help her through her difficult time. No one ever "has to" know anyone. Stefan's line of dialogue at the open is an excuse to deny Elena's choice. That's why Damon compels himself out of her life. He didn't "have to" know her. He "got to" know her. There's a difference. Stefan didn't give her the choice to fall in love with a vampire. He allowed her to fall for him while believing he was human. Stefan didn't give her the choice to not invite a vampire into her house. He allowed her to invite him in while believing he was human. These aren't just physical and emotional issues. They're spiritual issues. Vampires are indeed monsters.
This is just the beginning of their relationship. I could go on.

Pilot's arc is him being comfortable enough around and with the crew to be able to say no to some of their requests and tell a drunken Crichton and D'Argo that he doesn't believe their stupid story and that they need to get off the ship. Like compare Pilot rolling his eyes and scoffing at John in the rave episode to 1x8 where he's like "I don't want to cut off my arm but if they insist". Pilot being comfortable exerting his own autonomy, such as it is, is a wonderful subtle touch to a secondary character
