Coro, Taima, & Joule Callahan by @dailyashleighraichu

Coro, Taima, and Joule are the epitome of "tough love in sibling form". They all love each other so much, but wouldn't pass the opportunity to pick on one another occasionally. Coro is very much the protective big brother though, and would stand up for his sisters in a heartbeat. Taima is more reserved than her siblings, but is very passionate about her special interests. Joule is the most rowdy, being the youngest, and loves causing trouble, with or without her older siblings. Coro and Taima are twins, with Coro being slightly older (both are 18), and Joule is the baby of the family (even though she's 16). At the end of the day though, they all love each other and would both die and kill for each other if need be.

They are so many things. They start out pretty close. As close as you really can be when you're born 10 years apart- Maia's the older, and Vinny's the younger (he comes first when I say their names together because he's a main character and Maia's not). They didn't fight much, mostly because they're just. In different life stages.

Things start to fall apart 15 years in. Due to very traumatic reasons, they are separated, and they take this hard. They loved each other, and now the other's as good as dead from their perspective. They take it… "well". Maia idealises the fuck out of her baby brother's memory, while Vinny's just so pissed off. He's a kid. He's a kid and his family's all dead or otherwise gone. He's a kid and he's alone and he's so angry about it.

They meet again when Maia's 27 and Vinny's 17, and they've changed. Maia has moved on (mostly), she's in a new place, she's got a new family, she definitely completely 100% does not feel an overwhelming sense of guilt at leaving her brother behind!! Vinny can not even remotely be described as taking it well. From his perspective, not only has she replaced their family and community with a new one, complete with husband and kid (cringe and heteronormative and also he's way too young and beautiful to be an uncle, in his humble opinion), but she doesn't even seem to feel bad! He's had the worst 2.5 years of his fucking life, he missed his sister a lot, and when he sees her again, he finds out she didn't even try to find him again. She burned the bridge (not really- it was almost entirely external factors) and was happy afterwards. He's suffered a lot and she's happy and fulfilled living in Nowheresville with her new family, and her brother nowhere in sight.

Maia isn't as happy as he thinks she is. She'd LOVE to have Vinny back in the picture- he's her brother and she loves him a lot (he does too, but he's a teenage boy- he's not going to say that!). Unfortunately, they refuse to reestablish healthy communication, so Vinny just acts like even more of an asshole shitgoblin than he already is because he's angry and doesn't know how to express that. Maia just tries to ignore the issue and blame his friends for being bad influences who "corrupted" her brother (remember what I said about her idealising her memory of Vinny?).

They work it out eventually. They talk things out, hug each other, and get to know each other's friends/family. But not before Vinny burns down the town hall. Oops (it was NOT an accident).

US lab stands on threshold of key nuclear fusion goal

The National Ignition Facility uses a powerful laser to heat and compress hydrogen fuel, initiating fusion.

An experiment suggests the goal of "ignition", where the energy released by fusion exceeds that delivered by the laser, is now within touching distance.

Harnessing fusion, the process that powers the Sun, could provide a limitless, clean energy source.

In a process called inertial confinement fusion, 192 beams from NIF's laser - the highest-energy example in the world - are directed towards a peppercorn-sized capsule containing deuterium and tritium, which are different forms of the element hydrogen.

This compresses the fuel to 100 times the density of lead and heats it to 100 million degrees Celsius - hotter than the centre of the Sun. These conditions help kickstart thermonuclear fusion.

An experiment carried out on 8 August yielded 1.35 megajoules (MJ) of energy - around 70% of the laser energy delivered to the fuel capsule. Reaching ignition means getting a fusion yield that's greater than the 1.9 MJ put in by the laser.

"This is a huge advance for fusion and for the entire fusion community," Debbie Callahan, a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which hosts NIF, told BBC News.

As a measure of progress, the yield from this month's experiment is eight times NIF's previous record, established in Spring 2021, and 25 times the yield from experiments carried out in 2018.

"The pace of improvement in energy output has been rapid, suggesting we may soon reach more energy milestones, such as exceeding the energy input from the lasers used to kick-start the process," said Prof Jeremy Chittenden, co-director of the Centre for Inertial Fusion Studies at Imperial College London.

NIF scientists also believe they have now achieved something called "burning plasma", where the fusion reactions themselves provide the heat for more fusion. This is vital for making the process self-sustaining.

"Self-sustaining burn is essential to getting high yield," Dr Callahan explained. "The burn wave has to propagate into the high density fuel in order to get a lot of fusion energy out.

"We believe this experiment is in this regime, although we are still doing analysis and simulations to be sure that we understand the result."

As a next step, Dr Callahan said the experiments would be repeated. "That's fundamental to experimental science. We need to understand how reproducible and how sensitive the results are to small changes," she said.

"After that, we do have ideas for how to improve on this design and we will start working on those next year."

Prof Chittenden explained: "The mega-joule of energy released in the experiment is indeed impressive in fusion terms, but in practice this is equivalent to the energy required to boil a kettle."

He added: "Far higher fusion energies can be achieved through ignition if we can work out how to hold the fuel together for longer, to allow more of it to burn. This will be the next horizon for inertial confinement fusion."

Existing nuclear energy relies on a process called fission, where a heavy chemical element is split to produce lighter ones. Fusion works by combining two light elements to make a heavier one.

Construction on the National Ignition Facility began in 1997 and was complete by 2009. The first experiments to test the laser's power began in October 2010.

NIF's other function is to help ensure the safety and reliability of America's nuclear weapons stockpile. At times, scientists who want to use the huge laser for fusion have had their time squeezed by experiments geared towards national security.

But in 2013, the BBC reported that during experiments at NIF, the amount of energy released through fusion had exceeded the amount of energy absorbed by the fuel - a breakthrough and a first for any fusion facility in the world. Results from these tests were later published in the journal Nature.

NIF is one of several projects around the world geared towards advancing fusion research. They include the multi-billion-euro Iter facility, currently under construction in Cadarache, France.

Iter will take a different approach to the laser-driven fusion at NIF; the facility in southern France will use magnetic fields to contain hot plasma - electrically-charged gas. This concept is known as magnetic confinement fusion (MCF).

But building commercially viable fusion facilities that can provide energy to the grid will require another giant leap.

"Turning this concept into a renewable source of electrical energy is likely to be a long process and will involve overcoming substantial technical challenges, such as being able to re-create this experiment several times a second to produce a steady source of power," said Prof Chittenden.

Joule looked back towards the kitchen where Onyx was currently filling his mug full of coffee, so she stood up and bowed.

JOULE: "それは...うーん...はじめまして！" ( It's... Um... Nice to meet you sir! )

It was slightly butchered due to not fully knowing how to speak Hoennian correctly yet, but its the sentiment that counts!

Onyx takes a sip of coffee before responding.

Joule tries to cover her belly with her arms to hide it and she looks down at the floor before walking back over to the couch and taking a seat.

Elliot stands up and claps his hands once before starting,

The trans boy walks through the kitchen towards the bathroom door and has one more quip set to him before he enters.

JOULE: "You always seem kinda… iffy when they get brought up."

Elliot knocks on the door a few times until it eventually opens to a small, older looking Cosplay Pikachu.

After a few seconds of squinting she lights up and lets them in. Elliot leads Joule into the house, the former looking slightly nervous.

The Pikachu turns to Joule and switches from Hoennian to a more common one, Galarian.

Cherry goes to hug Joule as well, who politely declines.

Joule looks a little more uncomfortable, and tries to pull her bandana over her mouth.

JOULE: "Y-yeah... for sure."

Elliot and Joule’s turn ended up going fantastic! But now it is no longer their turn, so they head off stage... And...

It turns out. Elliot is in fact, not deaf. And can hear the things people are saying about his girlfriend.

Why can’t they just leave her alone or support her like he does. Is existing happily just not enough for you people. God it’s just like when he was at school and he wanted to be a boy and then everyone...

They just kept talking about him and berating him and saying things like grandpapa would say and... No. Come on. This isn’t about you. Stop making things about you. Breathe.

Elliot breathes in. Come on. Listen to yourself.

He breathes out. Calmer. Rage gone. Pack it away. It’s not useful now. Listen to yourself.

Turning around he goes to comfort Joule.

He could see Joule’s tail before the dressing room door shut.

With a painful sigh he approaches the door and knocks on it.

ELLIOT: “Joule? Please come out...”

The door creaks open and Joule peaks out the gap.

ELLIOT: “Hey. Are you okay?”

JOULE: “Y-yeah. I’m just. I’m fine.”

ELLIOT: “You sure?”

JOULE: “Mmhm.”

ELLIOT: “Well. I think they’re about to announce the winners. Do you wanna come back out on stage or? . . . Well you don’t have to if you don’t want to.”

JOULE: “No no... I’ll come out.”

Joule arrived at the front of the house, walking up the brick path as Luke and Mausa were playing with a ball outside on the lawn.

The ball hits the sparkling Poochyena’s foot the wrong way and rolls towards Joule before stopping in front of her path.

MAUSA: “OH when did you get here!?”

JOULE: “Eh just now.”

MAUSA: “You’re here to give Elliot more cooties again aren’t you!”

JOULE: “Yeah. I’m gonna hold his hand dude.”

MAUSA: “EEEEEEEEWWWWW!!!”

The front door opens with a curious Ardel wondering why there is yelling outside. It seems that he’s awkwardly trying to stand on his hind legs. Who knows what the hell he’s at this time.

ARDEL: “Hey shitlords! What’s going on out here!?”
