long personal post about grimes
sorry about this post. i had to get this out of my head.
okay one more post about grimes i promise and then i’ll try to stop talking about and thinking about this shit person for a while, but this song (linked at the bottom of this post) literally changed my life. that’s not a joke. i can trace a lot of things in my life back to hearing and becoming obsessed with this song. i owe it a lot. it’s not a perfect song, but it’s perfect to me, and i met people because of becoming a grimes fan after hearing this song that i’m glad i got to know.
i had a grimes mutual who i talked with sometimes, and they were dating another grimes fan at the time, and i was talking to that second one a bit and i thought they had a lot in common with my partner, so i introduced my partner to these two and they became really close lol. my partner, remy, ended up becoming really good friends with them, and flew out to arizona to spend a week with one of them, our friend charlie, in 2018. the other one, milo, is still a friend of mine too. milo got into kpop a couple years before i did and follows this sideblog actually lol. neither milo nor i went by our current names when we met, we’ve grown a lot over the years.
it’s not even about grimes anymore lmao it’s more about the impact her music and being a fan of her music had on me. it’s not just those two friends either, it’s that her music helped set me on the path i’m still on today. maybe i’ve progressed further down that path than grimes ever will lmao, who knows. or my path is aimed in a (hopefully) good direction, while her path is aimed at (apparently) just being garbage in all the possible ways.
i think i found this song in the related videos on a youtube video of a song by purity ring or something lol, it was pretty new at the time i think. i dont remember exactly when... i think it was over the summer of 2015. the video was posted in march and art angels came out in november, so i think i probably found it around may or june. it was a really rough time for me. it was the summer after my first year of college. when i started that first year of college, i was dating someone, and when i ended that first year, i had had not one but two really shitty breakups from shitty relationships. i only dated the second person for a couple months, but it culminated in her calling the cops on me when she thought i was suicidal, so.... anyway, yeah. also in my first semester i failed two classes. when i came back to school in the fall for my third semester, i failed more classes, had another really bad semi-relationship, and was placed on academic suspension which means that for the spring of 2016 i was home while all my friends were on campus. i was depressed and unsure of what to do about my adhd making me really bad at school, lol.
i mean like when i discovered this grimes song, it was before that stuff from the fall of 2015, but when that fall 2015 stuff was happening, i escaped into her music a lot. i started dating my current partner towards the end of that semester too, the first person who i felt like actually cared about me (and who had been a close friend for a while at that point), so i associate grimes’s music a lot with things like that too. with feeling sorry for myself and with feeling like i shouldnt have to be someone im not. just because the system doesnt work for me doesnt mean i have to change myself. maybe college isnt for me after all. i ended up going back and then dropping out in 2017 but... anyway. grimes’s music also represents dating my current partner and realizing that i’m not straight and eventually, little by little, that i’m not cis. it was the soundtrack to everything that was going on for me at that time.
im not sure im really capturing in words all the significance it has on me. it did other things too, like open up my taste in music and expose me to pop music or pop-style music when i had spent most of my time avoiding pop music because of... idk... toxic masculinity? internalized... idk... internalized homophobia? misogyny? transphobia? not wanting to acknowledge that i could like things that were girly? whatever that means? take your pick lol. its not like i was a macho bro, i was just avoiding things. didnt wanna think about them. thats why even though i listen to a lot of pop and dance music now, my music-fan-background is mostly punk, ska punk, death metal, black metal, and a tiny bit of underground hiphop that i got into in college, and of course, a tiny bit of nu metal i was unfortunately into in middle and high school lmao. i had a lot to unlearn and im glad i have been doing that! i think on some level though, it’s not because of grimes, i was started to dabble with these feelings and realizations anyway, and if it wasnt grimes it would have been someone or something else. as i said, i found this song from a purity ring video, so i was already dabbling in music and aesthetic that were outside my typical aggressive comfort zone lol. but anyway, grimes is the one i latched onto. i dont regret it, i just wish everything that’s been happening with her in the last two years was uh... not happening.
long story short... this song changed my life

What’s up? I never know how to begin these. Tonight’s Mood is Adults. There’s like 2 songs left, but AB told me to just go back so whatever album is before that will be the next Mood. I will probably ask him tomorrow, but wtf is ska music? I guess I have heard of it before, but idk, maybe I should just look it up for myself. Maybe I will.
Anyway, today was pretty chill, I guess it was a good day off. I didn’t really do anything though, but I have so much that I am thinking about right now.. I still have to fill my gas tank and I need to buy some groceries at the store and oof. I also have to take 2 more of those tests hopefully by the beginning of the semester. The one about professional knowledge doesn’t seem too bad, and they estimated time was only 3 hours, and I am not sure if that makes me more nervous or less (that means I only have 3 hours to answer 100 multiple choice questions and answer 2 extended response). I had 4 hours total for the foundations of reading one. Which, by the way, I didn’t think I did too horribly on it. Which is something that I never thought I would say, to be honest. I think I am getting a little better on not totally shitting on myself most days. But I have gained back some weight and that does make me feel like shit though. I hope I can get back on track soon. Anyway, sorry, back to what I was saying, the other test that they want me to take is Social Studies. I am really nervous about that one and I can’t lie about it. I have heard my other classmates that they studied for 3 weeks. My friend said she failed by 2 points, which is so infuriating (and I know this personally, I failed the writing Praxis exam by 2 points). That’s why I want to take the other first, plus I just feel like I will do better on it. I still do not know what is happening with school. I don’t know what student teaching will look like, where I am being placed, what subject I will be doing, or literally anything. This is just like last semester. I literally knew the school and that was it. I didn’t find out I was with the math intervention specialist until I walked into the school on the first day of student teaching. It was so frustrating and now the same thing is happening. Maybe it’s a sign that I shouldn’t be a teacher. Plus when I wanted to study abroad for teaching, those both fell through as well. I was literally on my way to school to talk to the advisor for it when I got into that accident. Oh! More on cars though- first of all, my case for that STILL isn’t settled. I hope they don’t want a statement from me, its been like 7 months since it happened. I can still picture everything though and the smell of burning. And the silence. And my shattered windshield. And I didn’t cry in front of my dad but when I got home and hugged my mom I was balling like a child. Wow, PTSD is great. Second, that woman still hasn’t paid me for my June payment yet for my other car. Its past the middle of July. When will she pay it? I asked my dad and he said he would get in contact with her. She also still has to pay me for July too. Ugh, I should have had her get a damn loan at a bank. Then I wouldn’t have to deal with this. I heard she was trying to sell it, which I don’t blame her. There was a lot of problems with it when she bought it. Plus, premium gas is not cheap. I will never own a BMW again. To make a long story short, I have a lot on my mind. This isn’t even including what my relationships look like right now. I feel like.. a huge fuck up I guess? Like, it’s going to sound unrealistic when I say this but I just kinda feel.. unwanted a little? Like people have better things to do (which I mean, yeah, they do). I feel for my friend, she might have covid. So, she’s in quarantine until she gets her test results back. I’m glad everyone is busy, but sometimes it just feels like I am being left behind. Maybe that’s how AS feels every time I advance in my degree? I won’t lie, I have left people behind, most of my friends from high school are almost completely non-existent in my life anymore. Many of them I only talk to once in a blue moon. I guess it’s just divergent. My mom always says that friendships are like the tides. Sometimes they are really close to the shore (you) and other times, they are far away. This will always be the case, even if it isn’t with the same people. This is getting a little long, and also its almost 3:30 am. I should probably sleep soon. Last thoughts? Eh, just that I only work two days next week. I might see if anyone would like me to take any shifts. I don’t want to work, but I do want money. And I want money more than I don’t want to work. With this woman not paying me for my other car, my money is becoming tight, especially with these tests and college coming up (They all cost more than a hundred each yay and even with my scholarships, I will have to pay out of pocket). I know I have money and I know I will be fine, but it just frustrates me. Oh also, I finished vacation and now I’m on split. And also I looked up what ska was. It’s interesting. Still don’t quite know but eh. Also, its almost 4 now. So, that’s lovely. I guess that’s it tonight? Still feel like somethings are unsaid, but, like always, it’ll be for the next post (probably?).

Festival season is brilliant. It’s like transfer deadline day for football fans, but instead of who’s joining who, or who’s leaving, it’s a case of scanning social media for posts from those already at Download who have seen adverts for tours yet to be announced. Anyone else get the post about the Black Stone Cherry/Cadillac Three/Monster Truck tour this December? It used to be as soon as you got to Donington for the old one day Monsters Of Rock festival, you would buy a programme and hastily flick through the pages checking for tour adverts. Festival season is also brilliant because it means that some bands touring the festival circuit will make a stop for some regional warm up shows. Hence, Danish arena-filling rockers Volbeat treated fans in Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, and Scotland to a night to remember. Sorry Wales, but it seems that you are still paying for Gareth Bale’s man-bun!
In Volbeat’s case, it’s not just a warm up show, but a full production warm up show, complete with massive backdrop and a dazzling light show. Having already performed a handful of shows in South America, by the time the tour bus pulled up outside the ABC, Volbeat were purring like a finely tuned engine. Tonight’s gig sold out in minutes, and as the queue snaked round the venue, a rather canny busker was entertaining the crowd by playing some familiar tunes. Little did he know that the band were in the dressing room that looks onto the street, and had the windows open checking him out. Frontman/guitarist Michael Poulsen mentioned from the stage that if he was still there on the way out, to say hi from him and give him some change. He was and we did.
After the electrically charged intro of Motörhead’s ‘Born To Raise Hell’, Volbeat take to the stage and steamroller straight into ‘The Devils Bleeding Crown’, the opening track from 2016’s ‘Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie’. Without pause for a breath, they go straight into a medley of earlier material in the shape of ‘Heaven Nor Hell’, ‘A Warrior’s Call’ and a cover of Dusty Springfield’s ‘I Only Want To Be With You’. Poulsen is a commanding presence on stage, very assured and constantly smiling as the carnage unfolds in front of him. Crowd surfers are up from the off, and it’s good to see the hard working security team on the barriers looking after everyone that comes over. Before Poulsen leads the band into an incredible version of ‘Lola Montez’, he comments on the crowd surfers, pointing out that it’s all males and asks where are the females? From there on in there is a constant stream of female crowd surfers, including one of the most graceful surfers I’ve ever seen. It was like she was actually floating over everyone’s heads. Unlike the guy that was up next who failed miserably, ended up vertical, and got a score of nil-point from the judges.
The widespread appeal of Volbeat is there for everyone to see. The crowd is made up of all ages, from teenagers to silver haired rockers. The “Johnny Cash meets Metallica” description that is often used means that Volbeat really do have something for everyone. If you grew up in a household with Bill Haley, Elvis, and Chuck Berry on the turntable, you will appreciate the rock & roll/rockabilly aspect of Volbeat. If you have a bit of rebel, or outsider, in you then the Johnny Cash influences (especially the sublime moment when a few lines of ‘Ring Of Fire’ seeps into ‘Sad Man’s Tongue’) will resonate. If you just want to bang your head, throw the horns and let go, then Volbeat will give you the opportunity by the bucket load… ‘Slaytan’ is a beast, especially when it leads into ‘Dead But Rising’. Perhaps the track that might sum up Volbeat best is ‘Still Counting’. Not many bands will have a song that begins with a ska-style guitar sound, then switch to a Slayer-like wall of riffs before returning to the ska. Brand new track ‘The Everlasting’ has the mix of thrash riffing and huge melodies that Volbeat make look effortless. The band heads into the studio November with the aim of releasing the new album early 2019, and on the evidence of this upfront play, it should be a belter.
The band are tight as hell. Guitarist Rob Caggiano brings the riffage time after time (‘Doc Holiday’ – ooft!), and despite wearing all black, still looks the coolest guy in the sauna of a venue. The partners in low-end, Jon Larsen on drums and bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen, are crucial, and give the band a titanium spine. Then there is Poulsen himself; The ringleader, the MC, he asks for horns up… the horns go up. He asks for arms waving side to side… you will wave like a loon. Well versed in stagecraft, the three men at the front constantly change sides. Poulsen will start a song centre stage then move over to the left before ending the song on the right. He moves one way and Caggiano and Larsen move in the opposite, meaning everyone in the crowd gets optimum viewing, no matter where they are standing. The band also have a rabid fan base. Everywhere you look there are homemade Volbeat denim cuts bearing the band name and where the fans are from. Volbeat – USA, Volbeat – Ireland, Volbeat – Denmark. People have travelled, not just for this gig, but to each gig on the tour. That’s dedication for you.
Volbeat are a fun band. It’s virtually impossible to come away from one of their shows without smiling, it’s more of a party than a gig to be honest… one with a killer hangover in the morning.
Volbeat play Download Festival on June 8th before heading over to mainland Europe until late July. All dates listed here.

The arskasa ona language of the ravens of antimony, and the basic dictionary
The alphabet of desire known as the Ravens of antimony can also be written, and spoken using its own syntax, and grammar. It's language is primarily based off english and is primarily used by me The Wolf of antimony to obscure information from people I do not want to know it. It is also used as a magickal language in my rituals, and spells as something that can connect me more in my craft when I am partaking in it. This language is made up of the 36 sounds of the ravens of antimony alphabet of desire. These sounds are connected together along with the meanings of the sounds to form words. This means that you can take the ravens of antimony's word for raven which is arskasa, and are able to split it down in its letters to gain its basic meaning. In the case of arskasa it would come down to AR - SKA - SA. AR meaning wise, SKA meaning life, and SA meaning dark, so the word for Raven technically comes out to in its base meaning wise life dark. Arskasa is a word that is also made up of a another word. This word being arska meaning animal. Also each letter is its own syllable and will be spoken as such. The Ravens of antimony language is written, and spoken in subject-verb-object sentence structure, just like English.

LOFIDREAMERS UNDERGROUND CRUSADES: The finest in Producers, Beat Makers & Musicians who dwell well away from the mainstream culture…
SONO TWS: SAO PAULO, BRAZIL BASED HIP HOP ALCHEMIST/REGGAE DJ/GRAFFITI WRITER
Tumblr media
I first heard SONO'S Killer Hip Hop Instrumentals via our own LOFIDREAMERS Facebook page and ever since then have been craving more from this bonafide street story teller. Let's find out more about the "Tired of people" boss......
Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: So Sono, I hear you pick up a spray can as well as go digging for and chopping samples. What came first for you making the raw Hip Hop beat tapes or the Graffiti writing?
SONO TWS: Yo Ashley! First of all thanks for the space to speak, it means a lot and sorry about my English mistakes... i am still learning man! My history begins as a kid, here in my city of Jundiai, Sao Paulo there is a local radio station that was one of the radio stations that gave a lot of space to rap music, and so my friends and me always listened to the radio. Rap was the sound track of major moments of my life. I always wanted to produce beats but it was like something far too distant for me to grasp at that time, so i couldn't learn or understand it, i guess my mind wasn't ready for it then. The Graffiti/Pixação came first in my story. Since I was 15 years old i was putting in work on the streets with some friends. Graffiti had a major rule in my life, the sense of freedom, the real meaning of STYLE, you know... you got to have some funky style to your throw up to get noticed in middle of others. And this is the vibe i try to give my beats, that S T Y L E!

Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: Who is your biggest inspiration in the Hip Hop World? A Graffiti writer or a producer or is it a mixture of both?
SONO TWS: My favorite producers are Pete Rock and Kan Kick. The music from these guys still inspires me now. You know, i am still bumping the classics on heavy rotation. But my main inspiration comes too with the "local heroes.” Here in Brazil it is extremely difficult to live solely by the art/music. Music is my life but i need to have other work to survive. So i get inspired by the struggle of friends that keep putting in work on the streets when you know you will hardly get the investment back when you release a record or a cassette tape. I guess it's everywhere, all these years doing beats i have made lots of friends worldwide and everyone is struggling... so these stories are my inspiration.

Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: Your debut beat tape on "Tired of People" "Street Talk [ZZZ01]" is a crazy mixture of dusty grooves and expertly put together samples of Soul and Jazz. What is the story behind the production of this dope ode to classic era Hip Hop?
SONO TWS: Tired Of People is a label i created to put my personal work out; with my references and with my thoughts... It's my state of mind on it. I have four other releases with different labels and i am really happy with it, but i wanted to do something from the ground up you know. All the artists that cooperated with the art on the tape and the label do HEAVY and STYLISH work in the streets. None of those street art vibes... I want to keep things real for the label. Akbar (@bay1010) from France did the logo, Germes Gang (@germesgang) from Portugal did the artwork of the tape and Oboe (@bomboclat1) from my area did the drawing on the package. The style is universal!
On the production aspect, this is the gear i used on all tracks: SP-12 Turbo for the drums, Akai S950 for the samples and the SP303 to do some effects recording into Ableton. The samples came from records of jazz and soul from the 70s. I am starting my collection of jazz records, so we keep digging to find some vibes. About the beats, like Guru said in the intro of "You Know My Steez" - "we have some kind of formulas, but we update on them". So i try to use the best of worlds, the old samplers and Ableton to make it sound good. Most of the time i am bumping some 90s rap, so this is the sound i like, and this is the sound i try to achieve. It won't sound real if you do a trap beat but you don't listen to trap you know?

Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: My personal favourite is "S-S-S Style" that saxophone sample and soulful vocal paints a beautiful picture in your mind. What type of emotions was you feeling when you put together that particular track?
SONO TWS: Creativity and frustration comes side by side. On one day you wake up like a king and in the other you feel like shit. I guess beat makers will understand what i am talking about! So the mood of my beats depends on the day, i try to make them all sound "spiritual". In Street Talk, i try to give a soundtrack to my memories; there are the happy times, the introspective times and the hard times... It's all about the things i live. In this particular track, it's about the STYLE, one of the major rules in hip-hop culture. In breakdancing, you got to have style. Graffiti, style. It's the Style Wars, hip-hop is all about the S-S-S Style!
Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: As well as producing Hip Hop you were involved in the Reggae scene too. Where did your love for Reggae music grow? Was it before your love for Hip Hop culture was developed?
SONO TWS: Yes, before i started doing beats i was a selector with some friends on a big sound system here in Brazil. I had a blog too called You&Me On a Jamboree focusing on old Jamaican music, like ska, rock steady and early reggae. We would do parties all night long playing only original 7's from Jamaica and it was awesome. Also i travelled to Jamaica once just to dig records and came back to Brazil with hundreds of 45rpm records, i guess it was among the most crazy stuff i have done for music. Nowadays i am more focused on the beats but i am still feeding the Jamaican music collection.

Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: This one is for the Hardware aficionado's amongst us.....Can you give us a list of the Hardware you get freaky with????
SONO TWS: I got an EMU SP12-Turbo, Akai S950, SP303 (these three are the most i am using out of all the samplers I have). I also have a SP404 (that i use only to do some live sets), a Zoom Sampletrak and the MPC60. I don't have a studio, it's all in my bedroom, and so I don't have much space. If i need to use the MPC60 i need to turn off the SP12 and it breaks the vibe... i am looking for a place where i can put them all easily to be honest!
Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: The hardware samplers you use (EMU SP-12 TURBO, AKAI S950, ROLAND SP-303, & SP-404, MPC60) have been used on countless Hip Hop Records over the years. How do you manage to find new production techniques that were previously overlooked by Hip-Hop pioneers, or do you stick to using the equipment the same way they have always been used in Hip Hop circles??
SONO TWS: Creativity leads the way. I like these samplers because they force you to be creative. The SP12 Turbo only has 5 seconds of sample time, that's all you have. So you have to learn some techniques that the pioneers used, like the 33rpm/45rpm technique to have more sample time. In the DAW i am kind of lost because you don't have limits, you can use like 500 tracks, i wouldn’t be able to decide when i should stop! Hahaha! To me, limitations bring creativity. Even 1 second of remaining sample time is important in these samplers. Nowadays, I am still learning…there are many tricks out there that i don't know but i read a lot and i talk a lot with other beat makers that use the same machines. I also participate in forums & groups... It's all about sharing the knowledge to find what fits you best. But like i said, creativity leads the way... the important thing is to express yourself no matter what kind of gear or daw you use.

Above SONO at work on his Roland SP-404 Sampler, in his makeshift studio in Jundiai while other famous samplers sit waiting…..
Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: In the modern age even more producers than before are looking to crate digging to aid sample choices in their productions. How important is sample choice for you? Is it relative to taste in music or exploration of music?
SONO TWS: To do sample based music, you have to listen to a lot of music and that's the most incredible part of it. It makes you discover new groups, new musicians, new labels... you LEARN. Discovering new stuff is what motivates me, so you have to listen, you got to have the time to sit and listen to the records you have found. Sample choice for me is everything! It's like the spider senses of Spiderman when you hear a good break beat or a good sample! hahaha
Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: What motivates you to get in the studio to make beats Sono?
SONO TWS: I need to make beats so i don't go insane. I need to express myself, like when you are doing some Graffiti. The need of expressing motivates me. It's the time i don't think about anything besides that. I forget about bills, problems... Music to me, is the best therapy.
Ashley LOFIDREAMERS :Your favourite record ever?
SONO TWS: I can't tell you what record is my favorite because it changes a lot from time to time, but I’ve been bumping a record i got lately called: Stanley Cowell - Musa - Ancestral Streams.

Ashley LOFIDREAMERS: What is your future plans for your label "Tired of people?"
SONO TWS: Before releasing my other beat tape on Tired Of People, i will release a split tape soon with my brother Oso Blanco on 77RiseRecordings, it's almost finished. On Tired Of People i will do some gear (t-shirt and a bag) and maybe in June i will release my other tape, i already have the artwork and the name... "We can get along".
That's it, thank you for the opportunity of expressing myself. Peace!!
