General Lore of Halloween Terrors

Now before I get into the characters of Halloween Terrors let's start off with the general lore around the world of Halloween Terrors.

First off, what is the story?

Well the world of Halloween Terrors was initially a story told by Reinhardt during a Halloween party, in an effort to show up Cassidy's werewolf story;

(Side note: I love this comic)

However, considering how the story has progressed, I don't think that is just the case anymore. I think at this point the Halloween Terrors Universe is on the same playing field as Starwatch, that meaning I believe it is it's own separate universe.

Now what is the general backstory of this universe? Well let's start off with a few foot notes.

Before the events of Junkenstein there was a war, a war that The Gunslinger and The Solider talk about in voice lines, no other character mentions this war so it can be assumed that this war only happened in America.

The world and countries of this world are exactly the same as our own, at least existence wise. There are no renaming's of any countries.

There is no question in this universe on whether or not magic is real, magic is defiantly real. However, alchemy and divine channelling are not considered magic. Alchemy is considered science and divine channelling is considered a separate thing from magic.

It's not just Halloween monsters that are real in this universe but fantasy creatures as well, such as dragons.

Now with that out of the way let's get into the surface level story of Halloween Terrors.

The first event is Junkensteins Revenge, after being scorned and insulted by the king Dr. Junkenstein tries to prove him and everyone wrong by creating life. With body parts he acquired from The Butcher, he created his monster. However bringing it to life was proving to fail time and time again.

Until The Witch of the Wilds saw potential in him and gave him a magic crystal in exchange for his service to her;

After that Junkenstein's Monster was given life;

However as a reaction to this rampage Four Heroes appeared, The Gunslinger, The Archer, The Alchemist and The Solider. Together they banded together and put a stop the Junkenstein, his monster, The Witch and her minion The Reaper.

There was peace for a time...

But the Witch was not done, she herself wanted revenge and so she plunged Adlersbrunn into an eternal night;

Now initially four more heroes were called to aid, The Countess, The Viking, The Monk and The Swordsman. However, they were not enough as several other heroes ended up joining the fray. The Will-o'-the-wisp, The Outlaw, The Shield-maiden, The Renegade, along with the return of The Gunslinger and The Solider.

Eventually The Witch and her minions were defeated again and peace was restored.

Until Wrath of the Bride.

The Bride attacks Adlersbrunn and kidnaps the king, the only people to stop her? The Sleuth, The Outlaw, The Fortune-Teller and The Butcher.

Now I can't actually explain much about the story of The Bride without getting into theory territory and that's for another post.

After defeating The Brides allies and eventually The Bride herself, Adlersbrunn is once again at peace.

....But for how long?

I don't know if I could ever do the "serious publishing by scrubbing the serial numbers off your fanfic" thing because I have a very intense need to ground my fics in their respective established universes, even with AU's. Like when I was writing OBAB I was being told "oh you could totally make this into an original story" left and right and it's like, no, I don't want to. Like, yes I feel like the injection of my own weird catholic hangups into Witch Hunter Gabe definitely tonally sets it apart from your typical Overwatch fanfic and sets it up for it's own kind of... standalone stuff, thematically, but also I would die before I take out Junkenstein firing off a rip tire in that fic.

At first I made a comment about how Starwatch was an attempt on doing a Star Wars crossover but Michael Rodent said no. But overhearing the voice lines and seeing the skins and events makes it a huge homage to the sci fi fantasy universe. Honestly is something that has been missed since the first Junkenstein era, having characters swap from good and evil and letting the voice actors really play around with the AU (Sigma especially, Boris is an underrated talent). Honestly want to watch some gameplay to see it myself but hopefully everyone is having their fun with it. Also how long until people are writing AUs with these new takes?

The Soldier Analysis

The differences between canon

Unlike with Jack who almost defiantly has reservations about killing Reaper, The Soldier shows little to no hesitation when killing The Reaper. Though there does seem to be a reason behind this other than "they're enemies", but that will be discussed later.

The Soldier is seemingly a lot more pessimistic then Jack.

The Soldier knows The Reaper, The Viking and The Alchemist but has seemingly no familiarity or fondness for The King, unlike with the canon original Strike Team.

The General Lore Presented

First thing that we know about The Soldier is that he and the Alchemist have been travelling together before the events of Junkensteins revenge. In interactions the history they have together is mostly unhappy.

The Soldier is still from Bloomington, Indiana, though he also travels a lot so he probably hasn't been back for awhile. He's also stated to have never cared much for nobility, The Alchemist saying that it's strange for him to be fighting in this battle.

The Soldiers motivations are that he is on a hunt for justice, considering the fact that he is also been stated to be hunting down The Reaper this implies that he either seeking justice against The Reaper, or The Witch. Considering the fact that when eliminating The Witch the description given by the narrator is "The Soldier slew the Witch, sparing no time to seek another target.", which is a very apathetic reaction compared to everyone else's, I think it's safe to say that the justice he's looking for is against The Reaper.

We know that he fought in a war and as I stated in a previous post this war was most likely only taking place in America as only The Gunslinger and The Solider talk about it.

What is Implied

Now let's start off with what is implied by the skin that is canon to this universe;

Which is the immortal skin. Now immediatly the name of this skin implies that The Soldier is immortal, or at the very least hard to kill and doesn't die of old age. Now combining this fact with one of his interactions saying that he believes in Alchemy because it keeps him alive. I believe that this has a double meaning, the first being the obvious in the fact that The Alchemist is a healer and is keeping him alive during fights, the other meaning being that Alchemy is literally keeping him alive, like a Philosophers Stone;

It also seems that The Solider is able to sense magic or abnormalities in people but this is something that I will talk more about in The Gunslingers analysis. Since that is where I'm going to reference it the most.

Also unlike with The Alchemist and The Viking, it doesn't seem that The Soldier knows the lord of the castle.

On the topic of The Soldier being Immortal, it seems that he fights in nearly every war, both with his line to the Gunslinger; "There's a man like me in every war" and the hero selection line; "A nameless Soldier, veteran of countless battles."

Basically The Soldier saw Jack say "my war is never over" and went "aight bet".

It explains why The Alchemist says "this should be our last battle" though, but I will get to that in her analysis.

Though this is probably a reference to the canon game, The Solider and The Gunslinger have seeming met at some point before Junkensteins revenge, and either The Gunslinger doesn't remeber The Solider completely or they met awhile ago, either way The Solider is avoident of the question of if they have met. Only saying "maybe in another life", combining that with him calling The Gunslinger "an oddity" it some what implies that something happened to the Gunslinger that The Solider knows about.

It also seems that in between the vents of Revenge and Endless night that The Solider and The Alchemist stopped traveling together. As he is the only one of the two to return in Endless Night, as shown through the fact that The Alchemist has no interactions with anyone other then the other three original Revenge travellers.

Ok now this is something I just want to mention and that is the interaction The Soldier has with The Renegade;

The Soldier: I know a man trying to escape his past when I see one. The Renegade: Easier to outrun your shadow isn't it.

Also something else of note, The Soldier, despite being adverse to nobility, is rather kind to The Countess. Referring to her as "My lady" and asking if she's feeling well because of how pale she is.

Anyway that's it for now, this is just a basic analysis I will probably get into this more when I finish the other analyses.

Between what Dracula Daily is revealing about Quincey Morris, Cole Cassidy’s Van Helsing skin (in addition to a couple others that might imply he’s a canon lit nerd), and how a lot of the Dracula adaptations that turn Van Helsing into a badass tend to give him some of Quincey’s role, I can’t help but wonder if, while I’m not saying there’s direct basis, Quincey Morris might have influenced the creation/development of Cassidy somewhat.

Now I want to know (whether or not you make Reaper Dracula) which other characters would best fit into an Overwatch Dracula AU (not just the “generic gothic monster movie AU” that is Junkenstein’s Revenge) both in relation to Cassidy as Quincey and in relation to each other with that in mind
