The Final 15: Aziraphale's decision matrix in a no-choice situation
I have been thinking and reading about what happened since season 2 came out, and I think I have finally been able to put it all down into a logical sequence. This meta is the result of both countless posts I have read on tumblr and my own thoughts.
But let us start from the beginning, which is essentially Metatron's offer:
Tumblr media
Notice how Aziraphale consistently declines the honour, as Metatron keeps pressing. When he says that Aziraphale is the perfect choice he also mentions that Aziraphale "is a leader, is honest and doesn't just tell people what they want to hear", which is of course a lie and they both know it. Initially, Aziraphale can't deny it because he can't just go "well, actually, I have been doing exactly that, stretching the truth in my reports and on a few notable occasions outright lying to my superiors and even God Herself". So he deflects to "where will I get my coffee?", preferring to highlight his attachment to Earth. In response to that Metatron makes his final move: he knows about Aziraphale's partnership with Crowley, and that means he knows about the lies.
This threat to Crowley gets Aziraphale to the following decision matrix:
Tumblr media
Telling Crowley about the threat is useless. Aziraphale knows he will suggest running away together, and that puts them both in danger. Similarly, running away alone / hiding Aziraphale will not be a good move either because Metatron will not hesitate to harm Crowley and use him as a bait for Aziraphale.
So this means that Aziraphale's best option is not telling Crowley about the threat and persuading him to come with Aziraphale, his second best being going alone. Both of these offer best safety guarantees for Crowley, and this is something Aziraphale would not compromise on.
So our angel launches into this entire speech about making a difference. These are the only arguments he can come up with on the fly regarding why he took the position (the position he does not want! At a place he does not want to go back to!). And he is terrified that Metatron will come back and he won't be able to finish this conversation, won't be able to persuade Crowley. Add to this the fact that Crowley is clearly trying to have an important conversation with him too. A conversation they would like to have in private, but which Aziraphale knows can be interrupted at any moment. That's why he tries to stop Crowley, that's why he is constantly glancing out of the window.
Aziraphale is angry and frustrated, but this is mostly anger at Metatron who put him into this position, at the unfairness of it all, at himself for not being able to get Crowley to agree. It is the despair that just when Crowley confesses his love, instead of being able to say "I love you" back, he has to swallow it down again. Aziraphale's "I forgive you" is "I forgive you for not trusting me to make the best choice for us both", "I forgive you for not agreeing to go with me, I understand why you declined". And this aligns neatly with the theory about the Nightingale song in the car being a message from Aziraphale: it is his way of saying "I love you, I chose you, I chose our side, and that’s why I had to go".
And you know what? Crowley is a clever noodle and he knows Aziraphale well, so he will figure it out, he will spot this out of character, under-duress-only style of decision-making and start untangling that mystery.
We all know how it ends, and I can't wait to see it!
UPD: to put the above in perspective, see this meta with graphs!

Do you know what the worst thing about Aziraphale haters is?
"What's the worst thing about Aziraphale haters?" I hear you ask.
The worst thing about Aziraphale haters is that they leave you no choice but to write post after post after post defending Aziraphale.
(Side note to my fellow Aziraphale lovers: I've seen the word "defense" is quite debated. I don't defend Aziraphale because I think he's under trial. I defend Aziraphale because I think he's under attack. I defend him like I would intervene if my friend was attacked or harassed, not because I think their actions need defending or justifying but because they are the object of someone's hate. But I digress.)
<<rewind. ■ they leave you no choice but to write post after post after post defending Aziraphale.
I would like to write many more posts to do Crowley justice. For example, I think Crowley is unfairly accused to not love humanity as much as Aziraphale, which is simply untrue according to canon (he gave humans free will, he was the one to convince Aziraphale to stop armageddon etc). I think Crowley is unfairly accused of trying to solve his problems by running away. But this only happened in S1 when he thought they had absolutely no way to know where the antichrist was so no way or fighting armageddon (thanks to Aziraphale withdrawing information). And it never happened in S2. Crowley didn't know about the second coming, or about any other danger when he proposed to run away: it was a "let's run away and be together", not a "Let's run away, I don't care if everyone dies". And many other things I would love to write about Crowley and about how hurt (and relatable) he is in the final fifteen.
But I can't. As much as I love Crowley and Aziraphale equally, I disproportionally find myself writing about Aziraphale rather than Crowley because as soon as I open tumblr there are several posts that range from sheer hate at worst to intention-questioning at best directed at Aziraphale.
So be it. It's annoying but my Crowley loving posts will have to wait until the haters pass us by on the river in front of our eyes (in a boat. Alive).
In the meantime: Justice for Aziraphale, Justice for Crowley.

Unpopular opinion but one of my predictions for Good Omens season 3 is that there will be no apology dances from any parties whatsoever.* Neither of them has anything to apologise for, or if you like, both of them have things to apologise for. Neither of them was "wrong™️." (Or, more accurately, both of them were equally wrong.)
If you haven't understood by now that both their actions during the final fifteen were absolutely in line with their characters, not to mention the added miscommuncations and a simple case of bad timing, then I can't help you. They put each other in impossible situations, and neither of them could have done anything different (without actually going ooc).
You might relate to the experiences or motivations of one character more than you do to the other, but that doesn't make the other one objectively wrong. If you put aside your own bias and examine their characters, their storylines (i. e. their vastly different experiences with Heaven despite knowing each other for more than 6000 years), and motivations you should be able to understand and explain their behaviour in the context of the story. Add in the miscommunication and the bad timing, which Neil Gaiman & John Finnemore have expertly made visible to us, the audience, but of course not to the characters, and violá! Great piece of writing that is highly enjoyable to analyse and discuss.
Of course you can still pick Blorbo A's side. But if you are thinking that means the moment they are in conflict with Blorbo B your job is to go at Blorbo B with the worst faith approach possible, to prove to all the world fandom that they are and always have been The Worst™️ not to mention objectively wrong, while your Blorbo A is the most innocent cinnamon roll in the world who has never done anything wrong ever and is the clear moral winner of the conflict, then that's a skill issue. Also you might just want to go outside and touch some grass.
*= Except maybe in flashbacks. I really want to know what happens in 1941 Part III that Aziraphale had to do the dance.

I just know Crowley is going to be SO FINE in Good Omens season 3. David Tennant is hot, we all know this, but Crowley is gonna be AHHHH. Either he’s entered his reputation era (immediately hot) or he’s a wreck (immediately hot). I love every era of Crowley but I know this new era is gonna be SO GOOOD

Something I've noticed is that everyone seems to think that the Crowley's Falling timeline is definitely:
> Angel!Crowley finds out about the 6000y expiration date
> goes to put his questions to the Almighty
> immediately gets thrown 10 million miles into a lake of boiling sulphur.
But I don't think this tracks with other things that Crowley says about hanging around with the wrong people, sauntering vaguely downwards, here comes Lucifer and the guys ...
Tumblr media
I think it's far more likely that it went something more like this:
> Angel!Crowley finds out about the 6000y expiration date
> goes to put his questions to the Almighty but gets fobbed off by the Metatron
> is dissatisfied by the non-answers he's been given, starts hanging around other angels who also feel dissatisfied (but for different, more mutinous reasons)
> when Lucifer and the guys try to overthrow the system, Crowely gets tarred with the same brush even though he wasn't ever into this whole 'staging a coup' business - he'd just wanted some signatures on his petition to set up a suggestion box
> but the Metatron doesn't care, so down they all go into the boiling sulphur.
Or ... Try this one on for size ... What if when he went to ask his questions, Crowley accidentally overheard/discovered Something Shady going on with the Metatron, quid pro quo he had to be got rid of.
Tumblr media
I guess for this to make sense, Crowley would have to not realise the significance of the Something Shady he'd discovered, but the Metatron can't risk Crowley accidentally revealing it or prying any further (such an inquisitive little angel!) So he manipulates situations to make sure everyone (including Crowley) believes that he was cast out for the 'asking questions' thing - and that it was deserved.
Win-win-win: get rid of the nosey little angel who has the power to bring you down AND make everyone believe that he deserved it INCLUDING the nosey little angel himself!
Tumblr media
Or, if you prefer, Crowley might have had his memory wiped and all he can do is see where the furniture isn't any more.
And now the Metatron knows that Crowely knows about memory wipes. Maybe that's why he has to split up Crowley and Aziraphale, before they start putting the pieces together, which is another reason he has to rush Aziraphale into making a decision.
And maybe that's why he almost gives a sigh of relief when he's finally got Aziraphale in the lift up to Heaven.
Tumblr media
He thinks his secret is safe...
But of course he hasn't reckoned with the relentless enthusiasm of the 'dim one' and her newly acquired reading habit ...

Aziraphale's reaction to Crowley's worries
OK, it is easy to jump to the "you're being silly" line and the fondness that shines through it, but can we focus on these two gifs (courtesy of @gigew , full gifset is in the post link below):
Crowley declines to go and wait in the shop, and tells Aziraohale the reason for it:
Tumblr media
OK, look at Aziraphale's face here, the moment Crowley says he has spent last night worrying, Aziraphale sits down and gives him his undivided attention. Crowley says he is worried, and Aziraphale is there to listen.
Tumblr media
He makes a point about Jimbiel being safe (addressing concerns), and then it all dissolves into the fondness of smitten and a suggestion to talk. But for me, that reaction of "I've been worrying - Tell me what it is" is precious. We rarely see Aziraphale show his love this way, and I find that it does something to me on a personal level.

I just think it’s unfair
Cause Azira can feel love - he knows that Crowley loves him - despite all their miscommunication he has undeniable proof because he feels it, yet refuses to acknowledge it
Crowley on the other hand knows he cannot breathe when his angel is not near but he has NO IDEA how Azira feels about him, esp after being rejected by him at least twice at this point. He knows Azira cares about him sure, but he also has been told through his words and actions that he thinks it’s wrong to love a demon, to be on any side that’s not heaven’s, and he has to live with the painful reality that if given the chance, his love would elect to change him into something he’s not
And despite all of that, he cannot help but still carry on loving him! I hate it!

The funny thing is that if I had to, if I had to, gun to my head, HAD TO choose, my favourite would be Crowley.
But it's Aziraphale who is under open, aggressive, and mean-spirited attack from parts of the fandom. Which is, I think, why our rebuttals are usually equally as vocal.
But we need to talk more about how the very same people often corrode the character of our beloved, amazing Crowley into a pale shadow of himself, some helpless whiny victim who feels put upon by Hell and Aziraphale and whose actions are informed by nothing but trauma. I wouldn't trust that Crowley with anything sharp, he might accidentally cut himself.
But it feels nice to imagine the real, canon Crowley kicking these peoples asses; both for talking shit about his angel and then simply because they seem to think he couldn't or wouldn't.

I hate Neil gaiman.
I was at a thrift store and I saw a book called “come home, angel” or something like that (I wish I took a pic) and I legit started tearing up in the middle of a goodwill. Neil, if you read this, on behalf of all the fans of good omens we deserve an apology dance from you.
