       Luca was not normally a social guy, Alberto would usually say he was boring. But these were new begginings, new town, new everything. New Luca.  How Do People Benefit from Pet Ownership?

 After looking through the codebook for GapMinder, I have decided to look at how pets help people feel happy.  My research question is, how do people benefit from pet ownership. Secondly, I am particularly interested in learning about the benefits of owning a pet. The variables that I will look at will be physiological, and emotional to start with.  I will choose additional variables as I discover other possible environmental and mental health associations. At this point, I will include these basic variables in my personal codebook.

While conducting a search on Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com) I used keywords such as, pet, dog, cat, ownership, physiological, benefits, emotional wellbeing, pets and health. I found articles for my literature review to see what research has been previously done on this topic.

While general pet ownership and your emotional wellbeing is a good starting point, I need to determine how pets help our physical and emotional wellbeing and if I’m interested in additional variables such as, marital status, age, and work status of the pet owners. I feel that women or men that are single and own a pet tend to be healthier from walking their dogs.  Findings during my literature review pointed out that people are less likely to have cardiovascular disease and are happier in general at social events with pets. Children who are brought up with pets have better communication skills and social competence.

I am most interested in exploring the association between female and male owners and their emotional balance and outlook on life.  I will add to my codebook variables reflecting gender (e.g. male, female, and cardiovascular health).

My hypothesis is people who own pets feel physically and emotionally better and they have less health and mental issues.
