"The Prom" at BroadwaySF's Golden Gate Theatre
Tumblr media
I'm tempted to say The Prom is a bit of cotton candy - sweet, but short-lived. Except it was a hell of a lot of fun! Some terrific choreography by Casey Nicholaw, and a witty book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin. But the highlight was an astounding performance by Kaden Kearney as Emma, the teenage lesbian who just wants to take her girlfriend to the prom, and is helped in her effort by some narcissistic Broadway stars trying up their social justice cred.
Please, go read my full review at TalkinBroadway.

The Prom at the Ahmanson Theatre:
Tumblr media
I was kind of expecting some audience members to be dressed in prom-wear, but there were also a few kids walking around wearing Hogwarts robes (???).
The orchestra section was astonishingly empty five minutes before the scheduled show time. Part of that was likely due to the usual downtown traffic (and it did fill in somewhat), but even in the lobby and plaza area it seemed unusually empty.
Nevertheless the audience was having a great time. There was more laughter than in any show I’ve been to recently, and I think it’s the funniest musical or play I’ve seen in the last few years – or at least the one that lands closest to my sense of humor.
Tumblr media
All of the adult characters were played rather broadly, which was a slightly different approach than what I recall from the film or the Broadway versions where most of the Indiana crowd were a little less flamboyant. I wonder if it’s a natural consequence of touring in giant theaters, but the outsized performances fit pretty naturally for Barry and Dee Dee, slightly less so for others.
Really liked Courtney Balan as Dee Dee Allen, who was very entertainingly self-absorbed (”It’s Not About Me” was my favorite song of the evening).
Kaden Kearney was very good in “Just Breathe,” though the sense of anxiety and vulnerabilty in that song carried through the entire show and sometimes Emma seemed withdrawn to the point where I wondered how she and Alyssa managed to get to know each other.
Act I seemed to go by very quickly. Maybe I’m too familiar with the beats of the show now, but I liked everything a little bit more than I used to.
“Zazz”: very funny.  The cast album captures some of the humor, but there is really worth it to see the live stage performances in this and other songs.
Trent’s songs are really livened up by the presence of the Non-Equity cast of Godspell.
The line delivery (and audience reaction) that surprised me most: “We are liberal Democrats from Broadway!” Huge reaction and it’s not even the funniest part of that scene.
There is a James Madison High School hockey bro who really needs to retape his stick.
Just like Barry Glickman, The Prom flaunts its one-time Drama Desk-winning status at whatever two-bit place it ends up staying at on the road:

Overall: funnier than I remember, still great fun to watch. Will try to see it again before it leaves town.

The national touring company of The Prom. (Photo by Deen van Meer) Nonbinary lead takes audiences out to ‘Prom’ RICH LOPEZ | Staff writer [email protected] On paper, the musical The Prom may come off like a colorful, feel-good musical comedy that’s fit for any sweet tooth. And it’s just that — only unapologetically so. The show’s nonbinary lead, Kaden Kearney, finds that even with all its…

Hey! I hope that this kind of ask is okay. I have a suggestion for an up and coming faceclaim. Their name is Kaden Kearney, they’re non-binary, and currently on the national tour of The Prom. I was so happy to see this, and just wanted to spread their name more, especially since there will likely be more resources in the near future. Have a great night/day!

Went to see The Prom tour again thanks to a lottery win, and again had a good time. (I liked the show so much I decided to get the very zazzy mug they were selling.) It was a slightly different cast arrangement in the roles than what I saw before, with Kalyn West in as Alyssa and Patrick Wetzel as Barry. Quick notes:
I spent a bit more time watching was was going on in the background this time. (One of the fun things about live theater; you are not forced to look at what a camera is looking at.)
Principal Hawkins is just having the best time during "It's Not About Me."
Hockey Bro still really needs to retape his stick.
LOL at Sheldon running around in the background of "The Acceptance Song" picking up recorders and such.
The scene transition from The Acceptance Song to next one in the motel is very funny. (Scene transitions in general were very smoothly done.)
In the background of “You Happened” (when Alyssa and Emma are singing) there is one kid who seems to have written his promposal in a pizza box.
Apparently the Applebee’s waiters in the “We Look to You” scene are just standing around waiting behind the booth for the entire song.
Pretty sure Emma’s room used to have the hardcover Harry Potter novels on her bookshelf (e.g. in the Tony performance). Can’t tell what’s on the shelf now, but it doesn’t look like Harry Potter, unsurprisingly.
Kaden Kearney is very funny in “Zazz” playing comic discomfort.
Courtney Balan as Dee Dee is over-the-top ridiculous and yet it is calibrated just right and the jokes land, so it works. She and Sinclair Mitchell as Mr. Hawkins are cute together.
“Love Thy Neighbor” has grown on me since first seeing it (mostly due to  Andrew Rannells in the movie) but as a big ensemble dance number it is fun. This time I randomly watched the Non-Equity Cast of Godspell very sneakily take tambourines out of the box they were holding and hide them behind their backs before jumping in.
Kalyn West did maybe the best (and angriest) version of "Alyssa Greene" I have heard. I thought, "oh I get it now – she is so tired of this shit."
After Trent’s last melodramatic proclamation on stage (”...and the lack of a DRAMA PROGRAM!”) it appeared that Shelby had to suppress a smile to stay in character. Others onstage were less successful.
Re: Trent, the role works well when it is played by someone who is old enough to be plausibly washed-up but young enough that teenagers might crush on him.
“It’s Time to Dance” – dang, that was some kiss.
