SPIRITED AWAY: Live on Stage
in North American Movie Theaters
GKIDS will release not one but TWO unique filmed performances of the 2022 Japanese stage play in North American theaters, featuring both of the show's main casts on Spring 2023!!!
Starring Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro, the line up also includes Mari Natsuki, original voice actress for Yubaba and Zeniba, as one of the performers for the witches - sharing the role with Romi Park (most of the characters were double cast)
Full of amazing sets, musical numbers, and incredible puppets of iconic characters! Journey with Chihiro and meet gods and supernatural beings at Yubaba’s bathhouse in the Spirit World!
<< Musical numbers?? Wait... Is the play a musical?! I hadn’t heard of that before! Or did they just sprinkle a few songs here and there? I don’t know, but anyway! A filmed version! Internationally!!! EXCITING! >>

Spirited Away
Imperial Theatre, Tokyo (proshot)
I’m glad they streamed a recording of this because we just kind of assumed we would never get to see it. we love a puppet show and some of our favourites were Kamaji with all his long arms, the Radish Spirit, and the Kashira (the guy who is three heads) (he was funny). the set was lovely as well - I’m always a fan of the way Jon Bausor uses levels and verticality in his designs. we weren’t huge fans of No-Face and I think maybe his design got slightly lost in trying to be loyal to the original design from the film, because he’s such an iconic character. in the film, No-Face has a very strong presence and he stands out as different to the other spirits, but for me this didn’t come across onstage.
Kanna Hashimoto as Chihiro (she shared the role with Mone Kamishiraishi) was really good! on the whole the performances were good, but we felt that the puppeteering didn’t quite showcase everything the puppets could do. for example, it seemed like the Aogaeru puppet had so much potential for expression in him, but the puppet direction maybe wasn’t quite pushed far enough.
overall though, it’s still Spirited Away. it still felt magical and charming, and the beautiful soundtrack tied everything together! after this and Totoro, I wonder what the next Studio Ghibli stage production will be....
