"We would spend so much time together, and so then it just became a thing where we’d just look out for each other, right? It was rule number one, like an actual rule in the ‘chum’ group, was ‘never leave a chum behind.' We would have to make sure we all left the rink at the same time, get on the bus at the same time. If one of them wasn't on the bus, you'd get off right away and you'd run and figure out where they were to make sure they were there. We'd always have to hold the door for each other, you know? You'd open the door, you'd walk through, you'd say 'thank you,' then you'd stand there and hold it while someone else is-- sometimes four people were holding the door for you as you were walking through. We had a list of like fifty different rules you had to follow, and then you had to remember them. And if you ever screwed up a rule, then you, you were a bad chum that day."
In honor of Carly1K, Karl Alzner recounts the origin of The Chums.

Jalon des 1 000 matchs dans la LNH
Tumblr media

I think me and Mandy both knew this would be an option for us full time. We knew that schools were good and there would be lots of opportunity to work as well. Now, the fact we find out that Mike Green is back, Braden Holtby’s back... these are guys that I’ve played quite a few years with and have good friendships with, it just made that much more sense to be back here, so. (laughs) I don’t know whether or not our schedules can still align and we can do a bunch of stuff together is something that we have to figure out.
But at least we’re all back in the area and I think that’s a really great sign. This is another reason why these alumni events will be great for the current players to see is that there’s people coming back to live full time, so there must be something about this city. And I think that’s one thing that a lot of players have noticed. There must be something!
Karl Alzner talks about what drew him back to the Washington DC area after retirement. (It was bros.)
