LOONA Paint The Town (PTT) Lyrics Analysis #1: “East of Eden”

PAINT THE TOWN IS HERE!!! And with that comes so much new lore and easter eggs for us to uncover. The lyrics for PTT feel chock-full of lore references, but today I wanted to focus on a specific line Yves says during her rap part with Yeojin:

We ain’t gotta East of Eden so keep it...

The whole verse consists of Yeojin’s part and then Yves’:

There’s no answer, just watch it We’re gonna keep running, don’t touch it We ain’t gotta east of eden so keep it If you gon’ ball with us then just sweep it

“East of Eden” is often a biblical reference to the Land of Nod, where Cain was exiled when he killed Abel. It’s been considered the opposite of Eden by some commentators. Since then, lots of movies, songs, and pop culture have referenced “east of Eden”.

In the LOONAverse, the place where YYXY are in love4eva is referred to as Eden, a place free of outside suffering and pain, a “perfect” place, though we see that it isn’t everything that God promised LOONA, and they choose to escape.

The lyrics here are kind of unclear, so its hard to interpret what Yves means here.

“We ain’t gotta east of eden so keep it“ could mean “We don’t have an east of Eden”, or “We don’t have to east of Eden”. I think the latter makes a little more sense, even though it awkwardly treats “east of Eden” as a verb. “We don’t have to east of Eden, so keep it” feels like something has been offered to Yves, or LOONA altogether, and they are rejecting it.

Since PTT depicts all the girls battling (against God, breaking their bond to Eden and demanding a place on Earth, in my opinion), I think it makes sense that God may have tried to offer them a deal. They could reside east of Eden and atone, but LOONA refuses. They want true freedom.

who is the villain of the loonaverse?

if you’re at all familiar with loona’s lore, you probably know that some of the members are theorized to be “villains” of the loonaverse. these theories are always a fun way to delve into the darker side of the loonaverse, which is absolutely there waiting for us to explore it.

however, i think the word “villain” is often misused in this instance. it is very clear that the loonaverse is a nuanced story with many characters, motivations, and events.

different characters have different motivations. not every member of loona can be some angel who seeks to unite them all and save the world; that would be boring! but to cast some of these characters as villains (most often yves, olivia hye, or jinsoul) also feels inaccurate.

first and foremost, i think who you decide is a “villain” in the loonaverse totally depends on your personal headcanon about the loonaverse and what happens in it. if you believe that olivia hye killed vivi because she was jealous of yves, sure, that could make her a villain. if you believe that jinsoul coerced olivia hye into killing vivi for another reason, maybe olivia hye is just a manipulated victim, and jinsoul is the villain.

however, i never want to cast any of the characters’ stories in black or white. yves is often cited as another possible villain of the loonaverse, and while it seems she has done some unforgivable things, i really find myself wondering about why she did those things. obviously, the one i wonder about most is why she left olivia hye in eden. some people think that olivia hye had to make her own way, using anger to set her free instead of friendship. but why? and how did yves know?

this is a bit of a ramble, but all this basically to say: i don’t think the loonaverse has a villain, necessarily. i think there are flawed characters who have their own goals in mind, anti-heroes perhaps. olivia hye certainly strikes me as an anti-hero in the making.

pause. yves broke olivia hye’s gaze, looked down. the rubble beneath them was still hot. concrete and dirt and ash. yves could only hope that the others were able to contain the wildfire.

“you knew everything. you remembered.  i didn’t. i didn’t know anything, and you...you never treated me like go won, never like...” olivia hye was shaking now, breath shallow. “She already punished me, why did you have to punish me too?”

their eyes met again, and the fires surrounding them burned brighter, closer, nearly licked the ends of yves’ hair.

and olivia hye was right, of course. yves was always spectacularly aware of what she’d done wrong, what she’d missed, what could have been. and because of what happened the first time, she hadn’t been able to forgive olivia hye.

and she still couldn’t forgive her now.

i thought yves left olivia because you can only leave eden by eating the apple and olivia hadnt eaten it at that point? she eats it later in "one" and therefore can leave eden. i believe that's why she can see the girls after eating it. man the loonaverse is so complicated but interested i wish i knew more

it is definitely complicated and i feel the same way! so many people get so detailed with it and sometimes i feel stupid. but its okay to just adopt theories that make sense to you, or you like, to create your own unique loonaverse, remember AND all LOONA are one ;) variety is good!

yes, the apple is why olivia can't leave; i think it serves as a magical object that transports one through dimensions. but WHY couldn't olivia hye eat it yet? couldn't yves just let her eat an apple? it has a lot more to do with olivia hye's mindest. i think that olivia hye was not emotionally ready to leave eden, therefore yves couldn't give her an apple and let her join them. or, maybe yves THOUGHT olivia hye was not emotionally ready to leave eden, but she really was, and that's part of olivia hye's anger--why couldn't yves trust her? why did they have to actively alienate her?

i'm of the mind that yves knows a lot about the loonaverse, in fact, may be the one character that fully understands it.
