Also for North Americans this should be getting a western release in select theatres
Update 2:
The ad is up now!
Important update: due to earthquake and tsunami warnings the YouTube version of the trailer has been postponed to a later date, the television version of the ad did air however circumstance did have the company did hope to perhaps delay it but it ended up airing on time anyway

I got weirdly defensive about my editing abilities in 2019 so decided to make something specifically to show that I could, in fact, make a really good edit. /shrug
Started: october 2019 during AWA PRO 2019 Finished: 12 August 2020 Spent countless hours on it during that time. Started keeping actual track of hours in Jan 2020. So total project time below is heavily UNDERstated.
Time spent: 94hr 3min 10s total. (again- understated. I normally just round up to 100 lol) 72hrs 38min 10sec for Premiere CS6. 18hr 42min for after effects CS6. 2hr 43min VLC (looping betas lmao).
Finalist in AWA PRO 2020: Best artistic, best video. No Awards won.
Many thanks to all my beta testers, for the editors on discord who actually tried to explain what flow was in esoteric ways so I could maybe understand it, and their help with footage procurement (searching for certain scene compositions in anime I didn’t know). Special shoutouts to TheLazyDaze for continuous hype and feedback, SeasonsAMV who showed me The Perfect Insider, which finished a big blank spot I was struggling with, and Niotex and Dr. Derpface who convinced me to just make my own butterflies in After Effects (Previously I had tried to mask them out of a Demon Slayer scene. It was awful).
Breakdown of the baby scene: (released 26 dec 2020)
youtube
My PC nearly died while I tried to make this, and it didn’t even render correctly in the end. I’m sorry for the glitchiness, but due to the difficulty this is likely the only thing like this I will do for Esoterra. [The gold mandala & meat pieces scenes show up later than they should, making accurate comparison pretty difficult. The other overlays seem mostly in sync. I apologize.] This is all the overlays involved for just the one part of the baby scene. The baby scene is not even the most complicated scene in the full AMV, but it is the one that is most obviously different and the one that seems to get most the positive remarks. Hope this is interesting to someone.
Breakdown of the whole thing: (released 6 Jan 2021)
youtube
Finally a breakdown that I’m semi-okay with. It’s not as detailed as I wanted, but I think it gets enough of the message across. It’s still a bit buggy in some areas (2 different video files stitched together to get all the video tracks on screen) but it’s in sync. This timeline is actually pretty organized. Any video that’s on it is actively being used in conjunction with an opacity/layer blending mode, masks, or keying. (But 80% of the time it’s a blending mode). Any nested sequences that seem to have the same clips repeated continually are due to the same reasons. On this timeline, Green is nested, Pink is an AE project. I didn’t do pop-ups for every nested sequence or AE project because most of them weren’t anything complicated. The others were either complicated or I just wanted to show off for whatever reason. Especially the butterfly segment. I hand-made and animated the butterfly swarm. All frames are shown on the tracks for informational purposes; I don’t edit like that. Anyway, this was submitted and made finals in AWA PRO 2020, but didn’t win anything (My other video, “Dysphoria,” did win best tech in the same contest though). Esoterra was the most complicated and tech-heavy video I’ve made. Also clocking in at the longest time I’ve ever spent on a project, nearly 100 hours. Feel free to ask any questions!

The first monogatari (kind of)
Three long movies that go by surprisingly quick.

Love the fighting scenes and more serious tone.
Just more monogatari, what else do I have to say?

KIZUMONOGATARI
Around midnight, under a lonely street lamp in a provincial town in Japan, lies a white woman, a blonde, alone, robbed of all four limbs, yet undead. Indeed, a rumor’s been circulating among the local girls that a vampire has come to their backwater, of all places. Koyomi Araragi, who prefers to avoid having friends because they’d lower his intensity as a human, is naturally skeptical. Yet it is to him that the bloodsucking demon, a concept dated twice over, beckons on the first day of spring break as he makes his way home with a fresh loot of morally compromising periodicals. Always disarmingly candid, often hilariously playful, and sometimes devastatingly moving, KIZUMONOGATARI: Wound Tale is the perfect gateway into the world of author NISIOISIN, the bestselling young novelist in Japan today. The prequel to BAKEMONOGATARI (Monster Tale), this is where the legendary MONOGATARI series, whose anime adaptations have enjoyed international popularity and critical acclaim, begins. A theatrical feature based on KIZUMONOGATARI is due to be released in Japan in January 2016.

So anime in cinemas has become a something at least in recent times across the world, most especially Australia. Our main distributor for all things anime, Madman Entertainment, has proved to be the most reliable for getting anime films in cinemas here (especially compared to Hanabee and the lack of Kizumonogatari in cinemas)
So I’m going to take a gander at Australia’s upcoming theatrical anime for the year of 2017 from March onwards, including some that hasn’t been properly announced yet.
Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale
The latest film on the slate, set to be released on March 9 nationwide (though congoers at MadFest Perth get it early on March 4). Based on the ever divisive franchise with a totally new, original story, my expectations for the film are pretty ‘meh’, I’m not hoping for an extraordinary story that could save the series but as long as it’s enjoyable, I’ll be fine with it. At the very least, as Canipa puts it, it’ll have some nice animation.
Mary and the Witch’s Flower
The first animated film from Studio Ponoc, made up of former Studio Ghibli alum (and it very much looks it), it’s going to be a very magical time. Madman confirmed they had the film quite early back at the start of February and there’s no solid release date just yet. The Japanese release is in July, so we can hopefully expect it around then or afterwards.
Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic
So here we have one of the leaked theatrical releases from Madman. The Event Cinemas page briefly listed a date of February 16 and was briefly changed to April 6 before getting taken down completely.
The latest in the Black Butler anime series after Book of Circus and Book of Murder where they properly adapt the manga’s story arcs, this seemed to the first sign of an English release for the film outside Japan with no one in America or the UK having grabbed it either (and America seems to be up in the air with Aniplex possibly taking the rights for the film from the franchise’s main licencor Funimation)
Madman’s website even lists a blank page for the film right now and if you manage to use the search section right (that is, search the letters ‘sc’ and click on the Theatrical Releases filer), you can see it appear in the results:
The Australian Classification Board rated a 2 minute trailer for the film back on January 6 as ‘Likely M’ crediting Madman as the applicant:
The New Zealand cinema chain Academy Cinemas even had a page for the film before it got taken down:
And the coming soon section of the site even showed a poster for the film:
We can easily see the Madman and Aniplex logos at the bottom and the poster directs people to the website BlackButler.com.au, which isn’t active if you try to access it and is registered by Madman too.
So that’s about everything I could find on the movie right now. So when will we see this film in cinemas? Your guess is as good as mine.
A Silent Voice
Easily my most hyped film from last year after Your Name, Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation’s take on the manga about a bully looking for redemption from the deaf girl he once teased so mercilessly, has been one of the most praised films so far, even from people I know who were lucky enough to see it (damn you Dazza and Kori).
While the film is luckily receiving a theatrical release in the UK thanks to Anime Limited from March 15 (who are also planning a dub for the film’s home video release), the rest of the world seemed pretty ambiguous. Luckily an accidental listing (that’s since been removed) from Madman’s website revealed that they’re planning a theatrical release for the film from April 6:
Since then, I’ve found that the website domain ASilentVoice.com.au has been registered by Madman:
And that the Australian Classification Board has even rated a 2 minute trailer for the film on March 1 as ‘Likely PG’:
And lastly, Event Cinemas has their own page listing for the film:
Of course after all this research was done, Madman finally confirmed the news on March 2. The movie officially coming to Australian cinemas from April 6 and New Zealand cinemas from April 13. I, for one, am extremely excited!
Other Theatrical Releases???
For a brief time, Event Cinemas listed the anime films Akira, Castle of Cagliostro, Tokyo Godfathers, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Ninja Scroll coming out each month, the pages have since been removed but I took screenshots just to be sure.
What this means is unknown for now (could be a film festival thing or special themed screenings) but it’s definitely an interesting development to say the least and I’d definitely watch all these films in cinemas.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
So that about does it for now with all my crazy detective work (all of which is publicly available to find I should add, not like I hacked websites or whatever). What do you think of what I’ve found so far? And do you reckon there’s more anime movies to hit our screens on the horizon?
I take a look at some of Australia's upcoming anime movies coming to cinemas. So anime in cinemas has become a something at least in recent times across the world, most especially Australia.

Koyomimonogatari: Calendar Tale, Part 01
By NISIOISIN and VOFAN. Released in Japan by Kodansha. Released in North America by Vertical, Inc. Translated by Daniel Joseph.
This originally came out in Japan as one giant volume, but I totally understand why Vertical has decided to break it in half. The Monogatari books feel long and wordy enough as it is with their 280-300 pages per volume, but this one would be around 500, and that’s just too exhausting. That said, it does present a bit of a dilemma in that I feel the book is meant to be appreciated as a whole. Without spoiling the second volume, there is a very definite cliffhanger to this book, and it puts everything we read before into stark relief. But we don’t have that, so it has to be said: this feels meandering even for a Monogatari volume. Being a short story volume, even less is “happening” per se, so you’re entirely dependent on the conversations. Which is fine, as honestly dialogue is why we’re reading NISIOISIN in the first place. If you like snark, these stories will give it to you in spades. There’s also some nice foreshadowing here, as most of them take place at or near the start of the series.
“Koyomi” is not only Araragi’s first name, but also the word for “calendar”. The conceit of this volume is that we get twelve short stories, one for each month of the year. They start in April, immediately after the events in Kizumonogatari but before Nekomonogatari Black, and move forward in the timeline from there. Each story has Araragi conversing with one of the female leads, in the order he met them (not counting Shinobu/Kissshot). They serve as an examination of each heroine’s story (particularly in Sengoku’s case), but are also about the fact that, despite what you may think, not everything that Araragi happens across happens to be related to the supernatural. There are several puzzling things in this book that turn out to have ordinary, prosaic meanings – as is normally the case. Usually it’s NOT the immortal vampire.
Naturally, each story ends up sounding like its heroine, to a degree. Senjogahara’s is filled with caustic banter between two kids who agreed to date the other day but have no idea how to actually be a couple. Kanbaru’s has another cleanup of her messy room, is filled with innuendo, and has probably the best ending of the book, if only as it sounds perfectly in character. Sengoku’s has an ominous tone to some of it, taking place after her first arc but before her second, and hinting at events to come. The weakest stories in the book are probably the first and the last ones – Hanekawa before all her character development just comes across as Ms. Exposition, and Karen is simply not nearly as interesting as her brother and younger sister. Oh yes, one minor translation quibble – why is everyone cursing in this book? Normally I gloss over that sort of thing, but there sure are a lot of shits and fucks in here. When it’s Araragi it doesn’t jar as much, but Hanekawa saying “bullshit” does jar quite a bit, especially pre-Nekomonogatari Hanekawa.
This is a decent slice of Monogatari life, and will make the reader happy, but honestly if you can I would advise putting it off and reading it with its second part.
