I got weirdly defensive about my editing abilities in 2019 so decided to make something specifically to show that I could, in fact, make a really good edit. /shrug

Started: october 2019 during AWA PRO 2019 Finished: 12 August 2020 Spent countless hours on it during that time. Started keeping actual track of hours in Jan 2020. So total project time below is heavily UNDERstated.

Time spent: 94hr 3min 10s total. (again- understated. I normally just round up to 100 lol) 72hrs 38min 10sec for Premiere CS6. 18hr 42min for after effects CS6. 2hr 43min VLC (looping betas lmao).

Finalist in AWA PRO 2020: Best artistic, best video. No Awards won.

Many thanks to all my beta testers, for the editors on discord who actually tried to explain what flow was in esoteric ways so I could maybe understand it, and their help with footage procurement (searching for certain scene compositions in anime I didn’t know). Special shoutouts to TheLazyDaze for continuous hype and feedback, SeasonsAMV who showed me The Perfect Insider, which finished a big blank spot I was struggling with, and Niotex and Dr. Derpface who convinced me to just make my own butterflies in After Effects (Previously I had tried to mask them out of a Demon Slayer scene. It was awful).

My PC nearly died while I tried to make this, and it didn’t even render correctly in the end. I’m sorry for the glitchiness, but due to the difficulty this is likely the only thing like this I will do for Esoterra. [The gold mandala & meat pieces scenes show up later than they should, making accurate comparison pretty difficult. The other overlays seem mostly in sync. I apologize.] This is all the overlays involved for just the one part of the baby scene. The baby scene is not even the most complicated scene in the full AMV, but it is the one that is most obviously different and the one that seems to get most the positive remarks. Hope this is interesting to someone.

Finally a breakdown that I’m semi-okay with. It’s not as detailed as I wanted, but I think it gets enough of the message across. It’s still a bit buggy in some areas (2 different video files stitched together to get all the video tracks on screen) but it’s in sync. This timeline is actually pretty organized. Any video that’s on it is actively being used in conjunction with an opacity/layer blending mode, masks, or keying. (But 80% of the time it’s a blending mode). Any nested sequences that seem to have the same clips repeated continually are due to the same reasons. On this timeline, Green is nested, Pink is an AE project. I didn’t do pop-ups for every nested sequence or AE project because most of them weren’t anything complicated. The others were either complicated or I just wanted to show off for whatever reason. Especially the butterfly segment. I hand-made and animated the butterfly swarm. All frames are shown on the tracks for informational purposes; I don’t edit like that. Anyway, this was submitted and made finals in AWA PRO 2020, but didn’t win anything (My other video, “Dysphoria,” did win best tech in the same contest though). Esoterra was the most complicated and tech-heavy video I’ve made. Also clocking in at the longest time I’ve ever spent on a project, nearly 100 hours. Feel free to ask any questions!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica thoughts because the movie got annouced for winter 2024

So, i went a bit insane and came up with a thought that would suggest that Homura is linked to Walpurgisnacht

It will be divided into 3 parts :

Tragedic Tales of two beings

Time shenanigans

Other smaller points

So let get straight to it because i ended up having a lot more to say than i initially thought. (sanest individual)

Tragedic Tales of two beings

Homura and Walpurgisnacht, like most of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica cast of characters and the story itself, are very tragic.

Constant Sadness

These two characters are shown the be in a constant state of sadness and crying : Homulilly is shown crying teeth during her whole fight and Walpurgisnacht is heard crying during her whole fight against Homura ; this the weakest point, thus why i decided to say it first, all witches are in a state of despair (that's the very nature of witches and how they're "born") but none, other than these two, are showing explicit sadness (such as tears) during their respective fights.

Death

Homulilly has a strong death motif throughout her character design : the red spider lillies where her face should be, her skeletal body, the guillotine she is walking towards... ; while Walpurgisnacht does not have an explicit death motif on her design, she does have a strong connection to death throughout her character : she kills thousands upon arrival, strongly suggested that she is the deadliest witch, she exist because many magical girls "died" and she "kills" timelines* (i will talk more about it on a later point)

Helplessness

Walpurgisnacht is the Helplessness witch, which ties very well with the character of Homura, her situation can be described as very helpless : she is helpless to save Madoka, in the 100-ish timelines she went through during the story of the original timeline, she never managed to save Madoka, she was always helpless to help her, even after all of Rebellion, Madoka almost turns back into Godoka immediately, Homura is doomed to fail.

Time shenanigans

Both Walpurgisnacht and Homura (as well as Gretchen) have lots of ties with time as a concept.

Designs

This point is less about Homura and more about connecting Walpurgisnacht with time. Gretchen is designed to be the bottom half of an hourglass and Walpurgisnacht is designed to be the top half of an hourglass, they are designed to be a pair ; Madoka, aka Gretchen, is most often paired with Homura, this time is the only time where she is paired with a character not part of the Holy Quintet. Homura's shield is designed to have a similar shaped, which connects the three further.

Themes of Cycles

Homura is a character very heavily designed with the concept of time in mind : her power being the ability to rewind time and "create"/access other timelines, as well as her story being a never ending timeloop where she keeps on trying to save Madoka but never succeed ; her whole story during the anime was a cycle, she started it when she made her wish.

If Homura is the one that starts each loop, Walpurgisnacht is the one to end them by either killing Madoka or making her turn into a witch after her death, *she "kills" each loop.

I will add that magical girls and witches are, in themselves, a never ending cycle ; since magical girls turn into witches, each time a witch is killed, she gets "replaced" by a magical girl who fell into despair. (i hope i was clear, i don't think i was-)

Other smaller points

This will just be some very small points that aren't connected to each other, and may be reaching, but points that i still felt like were somewhat important.

Strengh

Walpurgisnacht is said to be the strongest witch, mainly because she isn't technically a single witch but many, and Homura is said to be the strongest magical girl ; both are the strongest of each side.

Royalty

Walpurgisnacht's design/dress has a very noble/royal feel to it and as the strongest witch she can be classified as a the "queen" or "ruler", Homura, has better ties to royalty, her soulgem at the end of Rebellion is shaped like a crown, more specifically like the crown worn by British royalty, and her color, purple, is associated with royalty, as well as power.

Consumption

Homura, at the end of Rebellion, can be seen "eating" her soulgem twice, and Walpurgisnacht is a combination of many witches, which can be interpreted as the witches "eating" each other.

While Homura cannot be Walpurgisnacht herself, because Walpurgisnacht is an old witch who existed long before her birth, but they are intertwined, they were destined to always fight each other, so there's definitely something.

Add-ons from the movie update :

Less about the connections between the two, but more speculating about the movie while still focusing on Walpurgisnacht and Homura (and Madoka)

On this poster we can see 2 Homuras, however, only one wears the red ribbon giving by Madoka : the real Homura, the other one might be Walpurgisnacht, due to the name of the movie as well as her facial expression being mischievous ; antagonistic.

Also some details from the trailer might confirm that :

The thing that surrounds the phone is shaped similarly to a grief seed, especially the bottom part

This location is similar to a witch's labyrinth, witch its nonsensical nature

We can definitely expect a fight between the two, that's a given, but what will they be fighting over ? Homura does not care about witches in her new world so that can't be the reason ; but let's look at Madoka in the center, she positioned between the both of them, her back turned seemingly unaware of what is going on ; just like the first season of the anime ; the two might be fighting over her.

We know that Homura would literally do ANYTHING to keep Madoka as a human and as far away as possible from everything magical girl and witches related.

But why could Walpurgisnacht want from Madoka ?

I am not sure, i can see Walpurgisnacht wanting to bring back the Law of Cycles, to get Madoka back and restore it to its full self once and for all ; there's some details and dialog said that can hint towards the fact that Walpurgisnacht and witches are siding with the Law of Cycles.

This was said by some witch's minions, talking to Homura, telling her ; ordering her even ; to release Madoka, so there's definitely something with making the Law of Cycles whole again, to restore the old world where everything was perfect ; where nobody suffered, where witches didn't suffer.

At the beginning we can see text, said by the witches* (will explain why i think that afterwards) mentioning both Walpurgisnacht and the Law of Cycles :

This text talks about Walpurgisnacht's strength which was already established, so nothing new ; except the part where they refer to Walpurgisnacht as a "Calamity", but what i want to focus on are the last two screenshots :

"In the past, this existence brought hope, and eventually scatters curses. [The Law of Cycles] saved us"

"I want to see you, one more time"

I think that this whole thing is said by Walpurgisnacht herself, she is the one that benefited the most from the Law of Cycles, so she would want her back, to see her one more time, to order Homura to release her, so she would save her one more time.

And she gets an answer from Homura, *we can tell due to the white background and what it says :

She is refusing to give Madoka back, also take notice that Madoka is in quotation mark, i think this is because Homura knows that this isn't the "real" ; complete ; Madoka.

And yet she won't give Madoka back, because in her eyes she is living the perfect life ; a fake life that she built for her and she won't let her efforts go to waste and give her back, especially to a witch ; to Walpurgisnacht.

Here the witch's minions are mocking Homura ; saying that this love is nonsense ; it's too far gone to just be love, it's an obsession, Homura is using her love as an excuse to control Madoka ; she betrayed Madoka's wish just to keep her for herself ; she betrayed everyone for her "love" : Homura is well aware of all of that and yet she can't let her go, she prioritizes Madoka's safety and happiness over everything, including herself.

The witch's minions are calling her out on her unhealthy love.

So that was my thoughts so far, if I have more I will add them, but I think I have milked everything that I could from this 1min31s trailer ; there's a few more things that I wanted to add about it but it was unrelated to the post and would feel weird if I mentioned them out of the blue, wouldn't be connected.

Movies

Van Helsing: I've said this before, and I'll say it again... this movie is what made me who I am today and gave me my first celebrity crush (Hugh Jackman). The hunters? Story? The werewolves? The most accurate portrayal of Frankenstein's monster? I don't care if it has a low rating. It's a 10 in my heart!!!

The Craft: Big, BIG comfort movie. Whenever I don't know what to watch, I put this on and just have it as background noise. I wanted so badly to be in a coven and have a witch as my mentor. The fashion, too? Oml... also Nancy's monologue. You'll have me randomly scream-whispering, "You don't even EXIST to me!" alone in my room lmao.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion: The movie was quite polarizing when it came out. When I first watched it, I wasn't sure what to feel about it... now? I absolutely adore this film. The animation, story, the characters, the plot twist at the end? This movie is an experience. If you like anime with dreamlike and beautiful animation, you'll like this one. Make sure to watch the series first, though!

Books

The Picture of Dorian Gray: DORIAN MY BELOATHED. First book I read where the protagonist is a dick lmao. Blew my mind because "wow... I can write about someone who is bad???" I was 17 when I first read it and had a completely different opinion than I do now, considering I read it recently (during the lockdown).

Brave New World: This book opened my eyes to the world of fake Utopias and made me appreciate sci-fi. I am a big fantasy, supernatural, horror girlie so I was never interested in anything sci-fi. I like the old and forgotten, not the new and imagined. Aldous Huxley made me shut the hell up because this is my favorite book ever. Easily top three.

The Stranger: This book I read recently but man... so short but so powerful, it blew my damn mind and I just had to sit down for a few minutes just taking all of it in. Albert Camus threw himself in the favorite writer spot. It's a nice and short summer read!!!

Leia: one of the Vocaloid songs I still go back to and still has a big impact on me. My eyes still water when listening to it because I love the lyrics, the music, and the story behind it oml...

Carry on Wayward Son: THIS SONG??? IS SO POETIC AND COMFORTING?

The part of: Masquerading as a man with a reason My charade is the event of the season And if I claim to be a wise man, well It surely means that I don't know

This song is pretty much a poem in music form. Makes me want to go out on an adventure with wise man as my mentor to train me in a spirital way.

Genjitsu: The tune gives me such a sense of longing, sadness, and nostalgia and almost has an out-worldly component to it... this song gave me the desire to write a book even... who knows? This song... my beloved.

Rebellion - 叛逆の物語

Warning: Contains spoilers of Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, so read at your own risk!

Note: I was really lost that whether I should post this here or not, since this is a very, very old work of mine. I wrote this about 3 years ago I think? Well I did it anyway, please enjoy this! What was I thinking when I wrote this you may ask? I always wanted to make a scenario where I can take Dazai out and see my all-time favorite series, up till now it’s still got some pretty heavy impact on me, so I whipped this up randomly, I couldn’t recall how did I manage to go this far. Again, I’m sorry if there’s any grammar mistakes, or in some case did I make Dazai seems OOC.

It's been a while since you two have a movie night, and since both of you got the day off tomorrow, Dazai decided that tonight will be movie night. He texted you to choose the movie on the way home and he'll prepare the popcorn and stuffs. It didn't take too long for you to answer, instead of popcorn, you told him to prepare some tissues and hot chocolate with marshmallows. Dazai was surprised, usually you'd be the one who ask for popcorn, but maybe you just want some change once in a while.

When you're back, everything is already set up. Dazai even place a few extra pillows around the sofa too, so you won't be sore even if you fell asleep. It's about 7pm, the perfect time to start. Yes, you two skipped dinner for movie night. You inserted the disk then went back to the sofa with Dazai.

"A magical girl anime? Now that's rare. Why did you choose this, (y/n)?"

"I just wanted to share some new things with you, Dazai. Is there anything wrong?"

"Nothing, let us get back to the movie, shall we?"

The first, then the second episode passed, everything seems normal, at least it was until the third episode. That part when Mami confessed that she wasn't all reliable and that she was only forcing herself to man up made you cry, even though it's the third or fourth time you seen it.

"I don't deserve anyone's admiration."

"I'm just forcing myself to man up."

Eventually, you two reached the eighth episode, where Sayaka lost herself and let the despair take her, so that she became a Witch. It took more than just a box of tissues and hot chocolate for you to calm.

"When wishing for someone's happiness, someone must be cursed in order to keep the balance."

"The balance between hope and despair remains at zero."

"That's how us Magical Girls work."

"I'm...such an idiot."

No matter how many times you seen this scene, it always manage to strike you right in the heart. You could say that you can understand the Holy Quintet's pain. To Mami, it was loneliness, to Sayaka, it was the feeling when you realized you've done everything for the man you love, but ended up didn't have the courage to tell him about how you feel, to Kyoko, it was the guilt when you did something you thought it'd be good but then fucked up. To Madoka, it was a bit lack of self-confident and sacrifice because of the wants to help everyone ends their suffering. Last, but not least, to Homura, it was the burning desire to protect the one you love, using every methods you have to, even if it was the cruelest thing you ever did.

Dazai stays silent as you two reached the next episode, when Kyoko took Madoka to fought against Oktavia, hoping they could get Sayaka back. There was that line Kyoko said, in the Witch's barrier that made Dazai remember his old days back in the Dark Era, when he was still a mafia executive.

"Only people who have been forced into a corner would do this kind of job that disregards their lives."

He, too, wasn't given a choice. Joining the Mafia was his only choice then. Mori took him under his wings and trained him to be an exact copy of him, so Dazai could one day took the position of being the Mafia Boss. He despise both that man, and himself, who would have become an another him if it wasn't for his friend's death.

Those who've been forced into a corner, huh? It's true that there are many people joined the Mafia almost being forced. For example, himself, Kyouka, Chuuya, and the Akutagawa siblings too. They do the kind of job that disregards their lives, knowing they could die any moment if their guard was left down. Well, again, if it wasn't for Odasaku's death, he wouldn't have left the Mafia and would probably be the Boss now.

"Hey Dazai? Are you alright? You have been staring into space for twenty minutes already.."

The sound of (y/n) calling for him pulled him back to the reality, where the movie was stopped and she was looking at him worried. Dazai just pat her head, saying that he's fine and reach for the remote to continue. It was getting late, but neither of you want to stop, so you wrapped the blanket around the both of you and leaned your head on his shoulder as you two continue watching Madoka.

"As long as you protect the one you want, to protect them to the very end is enough."

Why? They're just little girls, right? If that's the case why did they understand life that much as if they've been living for a really long time? Dazai didn't want to admit it, but he feels as if he is going to cry. Their words lingered in his head, reminding him of his past, those were the days that he wanted to forget for good. After Oda died, he went to Lupin almost everyday like a basis, drink until he's drop and then went back to his empty apartment, passed out on his bed before waking up middle of the night because of nightmares.

The tenth episode, which explain pretty much everything about Homura strikes both of them. That part when Homura fell into despair and began to imagine when she and Madoka became Witches, just right after when they battled Walpurgis Night.

"Hey.. How about the two of us become monsters like that, and ruin the entire world."

"Taking bad things, sad things, and wiping all of it clean."

"Destroy. Destroy. Destroy without end. Don't you think that's good too?"

She was desperate to the point that she had thought about becoming a Witch wouldn't be that bad. She can keep on destroying things, no matter it's good things, bad things, sad things, or happy things. Why did it have to become like this? They were so young and pure and filled with hope and dreams.. Just like him. At least before he tried committing suicide.

"I promise!"

"I'll definitely save you!"

"No matter how many times I go back! I'll always protect you!"

It risen a thought in his head, he wondered that if he was gifted with time-manipulation power, would he choosen the path like Homura did to save Odasaku? No matter how many times he have to go back, and probably see him die. Would he still be able to feel anything? Or would he became numb and eventually give in to the despair? No, the real question is, will he be strong enough to choose that path. Homura may looks fragile and weak, even a bit timid, but she was the strongest one. Normal people wouldn't be themselves after seeing their important person dies right in front of their eyes without being able to do anything once, left alone times after times.

"I don't want to be a Witch."

"Although I've seen terrible and bad things, there are still many things I want to protect in this world."

Strangely, this reminds him of his deceased friend. He was always the one looking on the bright side of the problem. Why did he have to die? He was in the Mafia, yet he refused to kill anyone. But everything changes when Mimic came. Because of them, Mori thought of a way to use him like a pawn to get the license, and ended up dragging the innocents in. He couldn't forget how he looks when the owner of the diner dies along with his adopted children. If it wasn't for him that founded out about Ango, then things probably wouldn't go this way, and Oda would still be alive by now.

"Madoka. If someone came to tempt you with miracles, never be manipulated by them!"

"There's no one to rely on anymore."

"There's no need for anyone to understand."

This.. Feels so familiar. He didn't need anyone to understand the circumstances he was going through. He can't rely on anyone as well. How can he possibly tell them? Would they understand anyway? So there's no need to do such a thing. It'll only be a waste of time.

"Return."

"No matter how many times, I will always choose to return. Repeating the same period of time over and over again, searching for the only exit. For you.. A path out of the destiny of despair."

Will there be a timeline, or a world out there where Oda is still alive, and was able to achieved his dream to become a writer and have his novel published? All of the sudden, he wanted to become a little girl and find that Incubator creature, so he can form a contract with him just to see his friend once again. To see him living the life he had always been wanting. A Mafia non-related life, staying in a house with his room that can see the sea clearly, even in days with bad weathers, writing novels, maybe having one or a few cats. But..

"Why does she fight and risk everything?"

"Because she's still pursuing hope."

"No matter how many times, she refuse to quit; therefore repeating this meaningless and endless cycle."

"To her, stopping is equivalent to giving up."

"As long as she believes there's still hope, she can't be saved?"

After the series ended, you two had a short break before continue with the third movie, Rebellion. You simply said that it was the best thing that ever happened in this entire series to Homura. Was that she finally reached Madoka and get to see her again? He can't know.

At the beginning, it makes Dazai wondered was this an alternative universe where they can all live happily. But things aren't that simple, when Homura's journey to find the truth begun. When she regained her memories about Witches, their barriers and her previous battle against them, even about Madoka becoming a God to save every magical girls and she, along with Tatsuya, are the only ones whose memories of Madoka remained.

Her battle with Mami reminds him of when Oda and Gide fought. No magic, no abilities, just pure skills and weapon. But in the end, Mami still have the upper hand. The way she used her ribbons to tie Homura reminds him of the third episode in the series, when she was about to go against Charlotte, Homura did offer to help her, since Mami was lack the experiences and aren't strong enough to deal with such a strong Witch. She ended up losing her head.

"Would you really be okay destroying this Mitakihara City? You should think hard on that before you decide. So you won't have any regrets."

That was what Sayaka asked her. Since she had became a Witch, she would know how it feels like when the despair swallow you whole, filled your veins and become the blood that flows inside your body. Regrets. Pain. Desperate. It feels like your body became the vessel for every single negative emotions out there.

"It really hurts me to see you suffering so much and being unable to do anything about it."

"You see, I had a really scary dream."

"In it, you had gone to a place so far away that I had no chance of seeing you again. And everyone else in the world forgot all about you. Only I could remember you in the whole wide world!"

"I was so lonely and sad. But no one could understand how I felt. Surrounded by that, I started thinking my memories of you were things I'd made up. And I began doubting myself."

It reminds him of when Oda died, almost no one remember or know who he is. To the outsiders, he's just an unknown man. To the members of the Mafia, he's just a low-level member that they don't need to care about. But to him, and maybe Ango too, he was a friend. An important friend who enlightened their paths and their souls. He was luckier, that he didn't doubt himself, because there was something that proves Oda really exist is always with him. The photo they took together for the last time in Lupin, just a day before the storm.

"But you see, I became a magical girl solely to save Madoka. And that holds truth until now."

"So this is a Witch. My emotions have all come back to haunt me."

"I can't remember anything but glimmers of light and regret."

"Ah.. So this is my despair."

He cried. Dazai cried for the first time watching it. He didn't notice tears were rolling down his cheeks until you pulled him in your arms, holding him tight, pecking his forehead and caress his cheeks in the gentlest way possible. You said that it's okay to cry and let it out like this. You wanted to show him this because Homura reminds you of him in many ways. He needn't to ask for the reason, since he had witnessed it already.

"Despite her appearance, she's the most hurt."

You told Dazai that, the first time you saw him, you didn't think he'd be broken this badly. The truth that everyone thinks that way. He seems to be a happy-go-lucky guy and knows how to irritated serious people, lazy and likes to play around. But inside, he suffered from many things. Ghosts of the past that reminds him of the days in the Mafia, his shadow which guilt-trip him over every single small things happened, his anxiety that caused him to fear for failure therefore he has to think of every single possible that can or may happen to deal with them. Yet people think he is the genius, back when he was in the Mafia, he was called "The Demon Prodigy" because all of his plans worked. But they know nothing about him and what he is suffering from.

"I have to die in this world."

Yes. He has to die. That's what he has been thinking ever since a long, long time before. He had countless suicide attempts, yet none of them succeed. They all failed. Why is that he can't die? Why is that the world is trying to prevent him from dying to atone for his sins?

"I had a sickening dream. A dream where you were dead."

"Because I actually do have one regret. The fact that I left you behind."

He cried again, did Odasaku has any regrets when he died? If he had, then what would it be? You turned to him, whispering that he wouldn't want you to die and his regrets probably was that he left him behind all alone back then.

"That's no good, Homura."

"I told you that you shouldn't go off by yourself."

"No matter what happens, you'll always be you, Homura. And I would never abandon you. So don't give up."

"I'm sorry.. I'm so spineless.. I wanted to see you one more time.. And if I had to go so far as to betray that wish.."

"That's right, I knew I could shoulder any sin. No matter what I became, I knew I'd be fine with it. As long as I could have you by my side."

This.. He only wanted to see his friend again.. But it's impossible. He almost screamed due to his emotional burst out.

"Why did such a good person have to die? Why didn't I the one who dies instead?"

You simply pat his head, pulling him closer and embraced him tightly.

"It's alright. I'll always be here for you. No matter what happens, you'll always be you, and I would never abandon you or stop loving you. I love you, Dazai. So please, don't let the ghosts from the past get to you.. No. I won't let them get to you. I swear that I, (y/n) will bring you happiness with my own hands! Even if I have to turn myself into a mere concept, I will still take all those despair from you, I will be your only God that brings happiness."

He was stunned. There hasn't been a single person who has said something like that to him. He was touched. Even though you two have been dating for quite a while already but he had never heard such a bold decision from you. Immediately, Dazai pulled you into a tight hug, his face buried in your neck.

"Thank you, (y/n).. I couldn't imagine how I'd become or what I'd become if you didn't come into my life. You don't have to go that far just to make me happy, all you have to do is stay by my side, that's more than enough already."

You kissed him before getting back on the ending of Rebellion. You knew what was coming, and you're sure Dazai would be surprise by it.

"It was not even curse that soiled my Soul Gem."

"It's the pinnacle of all human emotions. More passionate than hope, far deeper than despair. It's love."

"She was as sacred as a god, and I couldn't help but pull her from heaven and undermine her."

"A being that perform such threat could only be called a demon, I suppose?"

He smirked, paused the movie before turned to you, who was dumbfounded of what just happened.

"(Y/n), did you just say that you'll be my God?"

"Yes..? What's wrong with that, Dazai?"

"Oh, there is. Because I'm a demon that couldn't help but pull you down from heaven and make you mine, forever."

hi, i've recently watched evangelion and mob psycho 100 for the first time and it tricked me into thinking maybe i can watch anime. but i started watching steins;gate and turns out, no i cant. it's not even that i can't watch sexist media, i've watched supernatural, i did my time, it's just that anime sexism is so culturally different for me it makes it stand out more. i also hate the sexual aspect of it. so like, do you have some recs? i don't really watch anime if you couldnt tell

I feel for you, Steins;Gate is filled with so much harem anime sexist transphobic bullshit 😭😭 Can't believe it's the second highest rated anime on MyAnimeList lmao. That being said, here are some recs:

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. This is the highest rated anime on MyAnimeList and unlike S;G it's actually for good reasons!! Fantastic story and characters, not to mention that it surprisingly has a really good disability representation. Keep in mind that the first 12 episodes were quite fast paced because the anime expected you to already watch FMA 2003. I haven't watched it myself but I also heard good things about it, it's just that 2003 was made before the manga was finished so it ended abruptly

Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Evangelion but make it gay magical girls lmao. Honestly my fav anime alongside Evangelion, I also highly recommend watching Rebellion if you loved End of Evangelion

Paranoia Agent. This is the work of Satoshi Kon, so of course it's highly recommended. In fact I recommend watching all of his movies too, it's so sad that we lose him way too soon :(

Devilman Crybaby. This show is VERY heavy, honestly after I watched it I struggled to think clearly for a few days. Very understandable if you couldn't get into this show but I loved the theme of humanity causing its own collapse

Azumanga Daioh. It's a 10/10 comedy show about school girls life, perhaps the funniest anime I've watched!! It's very bizarre but comfy. Although there's this one male teacher that falls into the typical perverted man trope which is blech but thankfully he didn't appear too much

Serial Experiment Lain. It's kinda hard to follow but highly recommended for the experience alone. The theme song also went viral on TikTok for some reason lol

Death Note. Yeah yeah Misa is kinda annoying and very fanservicey, not to mention that past episode 25 it got a lot less interesting BUT it's still such a good show. Just worth watching to see the cat and mouse chase between Light and L. Also I actually really liked Misa at the end lol maybe I'm weak for girlypop goth girls

Lucky Star. This show probably has the most anime bullshit from all these recs, be ready for yet perverted man trope because he's literally the main character's dad! And it doesn't get less creepy as the show goes on! That being said I think the comedy is strong enough to ignore the bad part of the show, half of the first episode is just them talking about how to eat a pastry and it managed to be so intriguing

Persona 3 Portable. I'm cheating, this is actually a game, but having a female protagonist is such a game changer. Really alleviate a lot of anime bullcrap seen in the usual modern Persona titles. Friendship with female party members became so much more meaningful and the romance routes hands down are the BEST of all Persona games. There is sadly one romance route I would avoid at all cost because it's so gross (Ken), but it's very easily avoidable. Overall a fantastic game that made me less excited for Persona 3 Reload because the female protagonist is really that good :(

I think from what I've seen Kaguya Sama: Love is War is really good too! Basically a battle anime but with 2 teenagers coming up with ridiculous plans to confess their love. I haven't watched it though, only watched some clips, but it seems to be promising!

I had goals to make this more than just a compilation of cruel scenes from anime. Unfortunately, my story telling capabilities aren’t as good as I’d hoped. —– I’m not entirely happy with this, but I have let it sit for so long, I wanted to get it to “finished, not perfect” status so I could move on to other projects. (I started this September 2018.) Personal goals: – No blood – No gore – Don’t go the easy route (overused popular/obvious scenes) – If I do use a popular scene/anime, infer most the action to avoid use of said specific scene. Or change it some way. – Homage to some of my most liked moments in old anime – Retain some semblance of story rather than just a cruel montage I think I did okay. The blood thing proved especially limiting. I wanted to avoid Death Note entirely in the beginning, but to focus on story I re-added it. I have avoided almost all the expected scenes, however. I’ve remade portions of this at least 3 times, several anime were considered, added, then removed. In the end I am mostly happy with this. My biggest complaint is that the cruelty of the Dildandau character in Vision of Escaflowne (my favorite anime) is not conveyed well in animation and so likely gets lost among the madness of the AMV unless you’re familiar with the anime. This “implied cruelty” is the same for some other points, but I think those specific anime are so well-known that the message is clear anyway, even among those who have not seen those anime, they probably know what it refers to. Overall, this was a challenge. It is my first full-length AMV in many years, and is also one of my first various anime AMVs. I think I will stick to single anime AMVs from now on, hah. There is an unaccounted for video source in here. The “game start”, dice, game stat page things, and a couple random scenes are from a Korean webtoon called “DICE: The Cube That Changes Everything”. a few days late because my job is kicking my ass lately, but i've got another batch of little reviews of stuff i've been checking out. take a look!

Doctor Who: The Fifth Doctor (Seasons 19-21)

it only took 20 years but this show is truly getting good i think. you can start to see where the DNA of the reboot comes from, especially how davison's performance would influence tennant's - and what a sendoff he got in the end, some really wild shit happening there. not much more to go now

Faraway Downs

a lot more digestible than the movie it was edited from, and makes me ponder if it shouldn't have just been this way from the start. the changed ending feels more in line with the rest of baz's ouvre, given his penchant for tragic deaths - but i'm not sure it's a better ending for this in particular. otherwise, everything from the movie applies, good and bad

Checkmate - Malorie Blackman

a strong conclusion to this first trilogy, about healing from the scars of your past and focusing on the ones who are here now. some elements feel all too real to this day, and it's heartbreaking. believe in something better

Iron Man 3

james bond by way of marvel while grappling with tony's actual damage instead of just libertarian-ing all over the place. disappointing that they did "What If Iron Man But Evil" yet a fucking gain but once i get past my annoyance at that, they do make it kind of work, and tony getting down in the dirt and getting to know actual regular people was really fun. good start, phase 2. try and keep it up please

Ben 10 Versus the Universe: The Movie

this was distinctly pretty okay, definitely far more enjoyable than the nonsense that the live action movies are, and there was some poignancy to it all - gwen and max thinking ben might be dead, ben having similar worries on his end, azmuth's test pushing him to be better than he can be. it may be a bit rote hero's journey stuff, but ben 10 has always been extremely by the numbers - it's no different here. my main gripe is that for being a movie, they really don't push the animation much. this genuinely looks like it could've been split into a 5-6 parter to cap off the last season of the show and there would be no obvious difference, and for all i know it probably is aired this way when the show is in syndication.

The Wolverine

watched the extended edition. man i just zoned the fuck out of this one. some nicely shot action at least but i just didn't have the mental energy to follow the plot and the silver samurai stuff was dummmbbb. very unmemorable

The Mandalorian (Season 3)

the narrative arc must sacrifice all for The Lore. all subservient, all reverent of The Lore. mandalore is back. don't you feel proud? don't you feel serviced? don't you feel clever, for knowing all these things about our brand? we took the narrative arc of our main characters and shot it behind the shed so they could stand around while bo katan, our hidden true protagonist of this season, does all of the actually important stuff, but that's okay, right? you feel good, because you know who bo katan is, and why she's important, and why the darksaber is important, and why its so so sad that moff gideon destroyed this trinket from another series made 15 years ago. look, here's jack black, and lizzo, and christopher lloyd. isn't it fun that they're now part of the Star Wars brand? isn't it great? din and grogu have a house now, all to themselves. that works as an ending, right? this is what you want, right? this is what makes you happy. this is what you crave, fans. The Story is dead. long live The Lore.

Ben 10 (2016)

honestly really not that bad if you take it for what it is rather than being mad that it's not alien force Like Some People. fun redesigns, some decent comedic writing and mixed additions to the rogue's gallery (extreme pass on breaker 1-9 and nanny nightmare, but xingo, the bugg brothers and tim buktu are fun). don't go in demanding deepness or tight canon or worldbuilding (factors ben 10 as a franchise has never actually been all that good at if we're really being honest) and you can have a fun time

Thor: The Dark World

it should be a crime to misuse christopher eccleston this badly

Mario Kart 7

this must have seemed like a shock to the devs of mkwii but it turns out when you don't entirely fucking explode the player for the crime of existing near first place, the game is actually fun and enjoyable, and i want to play more of it

Star Wars: Visions (Season 2)

not as good as the first season IMO, but still some fantastic and beautiful animation from around the world. the aardman short got me good. i saw you grand day out robot

Nichijou: Original Run (Vol. 1-10)

works just as good in manga format as the anime did, although it doesn't have quite as good an ending. keiichi arawi has an impeccable sense of timing that shines even in manga format, and their ability to take comedy to great extremes in their art is hilarious

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey - The Fate of Atlantis

well that was a load of nonsense. AC's take on greek mythology was admittedly pretty cool to see but it was just a lot of meandering in the end. a surface level tour with some juno teasing at the end which i'm pretty sick of tbh

AD:PIANO VIVACE 2 - Diverse System

pretty good but not stellar. little really stuck out to me as truly awesome, even BlackY's track was kind of a let down. still, nothing actively bad here.

best track: "Flows With Errors"

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

it feels wild that thus far captain america consistently outdoes every other MCU movie. i didn't think i'd be this on board with him when i decided to start catching up. a great spy thriller that managed to contain a ton of engaging plot threads without feeling overstuffed and overlong, and genuinely left me pretty excited for more

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

there's like, almost a movie here. it starts off pretty good! there's bits and pieces that shine, it feels like it should be better than it is, there's stuff throughout that could absolutely go somewhere exciting and then it just completely fumbles everything. what the fuck
