the knysna turaco, also known as the knysna loerie, is a large turaco species primarily found in southern africa. they were previously considered to be a subspecies of the similar green turaco. these vibrantly colored birds have a bright green upper half, and a blue lower half, with crimson primary feathers. it’s believed that the bright coloration on their wings helps them escape from predators; predators focus on the bright red coloration, and lose sight of the bird when the wing is folded during flight. turacos are the only birds to possess ‘true’ red and green colors; most birds’ colorations are a result of feather structure, where turacos’ pigmentation is rich in copper - stirring a red turaco feather in water would color the water pink. they are primarily frugivorous birds, but will also feed on buds and leaves.

So today I got to do quite a long birding session (2 hours) and although I didn't manage to recognise and identify everything what I did get was super cool:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So starting off we have quite a ubiquitous beastie in the form of this Elegant Grasshopper. There was a bunch of these little guys hopping around at every step I took which led me to think about how dogshit they are at being inconspicuous. I thought about this for two more seconds and realised they probably are poisonous and lo and behold. I probably shouldn't touch with bare hands but... hey ho, I'm not throwing my guts up so I'm good!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is this Southern Red Bishop which I misidenitified as a Barbet instead... Merlin describes this guy as "dumpy" which is all you need to know. Also a Sombre Greenbul... whys she sombre? Idk but she refused to turn around and look at the camera >:[
Tumblr media
A Cape Bulbul eating from a cactus! It took a few the fruits and flew off.
Tumblr media
A Speckled Mousebird! Possibly one of the most angelic looking birds while flying due to its long flowing tail and light colour scheme. When it's landed though it always looks so confused... like it doesn't know why it's here. Which same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally (for birds anyways), I got to see a classic, the small brown bird. Although this time I could actually identify it as (what I think is) an Eastern Lapper Lark:
Tumblr media
I also got to see quite a fun little guy in the form of a Dassie/Rock Hyrax chilling on a cliff edge... that Hyrax really Rocks huh...
Tumblr media
I also luckily got to see a Knysna Turaco however they flew off before I could get a good picture or any picture at all in! I will hopefully get to see another before I leave...

The Knysna turaco (Tauraco corythaix), or, in South Africa, Knysna loerie, is a large turaco, one of a group of African musophagidae birds. It is a resident breeder in the mature evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa, and Eswatini. It was formerly sometimes considered to be a subspecies of the green turaco of West Africa. The Livingstone's and Schalow's turacos were once considered subspecies.

The Royal Red Flight of the Knysna Turaco - by Chris Petersen
The Crimson Wing Feathers of the Knysna Turaco Were Highly Valued by the Chiefs of Swazi & Zulu Royalty.
While its Green & Blue Plumage is Quite beautiful, you only See the Magnificent Red Wings in Flight.
Most Bird Feathers Only Reflect Colors of Light. Turaco Feathers are Very Unique in That They Contain Actual Pigments Derived From Copper & Other Minerals. Put a Turaco Red Wing Feather in a Glass of Water and it Will Turn the Water Pink.

Bird Photography on Your Southern African Safari
Tumblr media
Mega-diversity exists in abundance in South Africa. It has ecosystems in the southwest that are unique to this planet and are home to a variety of endemic species. The African Penguin, African Black Oystercatcher, Blue Crane, Cape Rockjumper, Knysna Turaco, and Chorister Robin-chat are just a few of the spectacular birds that may be found there. South Africa transforms into bush and savannah vegetation resembling that of East Africa in the northeast, where species variety soars and it is possible to see hundreds of bird species in a single day. In addition, this is "safari" country, which is home to some of Africa's most stunning creatures, including the giraffe, elephant, hippo, zebra, lion, cheetah, and wild dog.
The Zimanga private reserve, which is intended specifically for photographers, is our main location here. With more than 400 species recorded, birds are abundant in this region as well. Hwange is 5,600 square miles in size and contains a variety of habitats, including salt pans, granite outcrops, huge grasslands, and woods. Opportunities for up-close encounters with a wide variety of wildlife occur frequently and are thrilling. The area around these blinds (hides) has swiftly gained a reputation as one of Africa's best locations for bird photography. Numerous storks, vultures, magnificent raptors, bee-eaters, hornbills, kingfishers, barbets, sunbirds, starlings, waxbills, and bush-shrikes are drawn to them. The tour comes to an end at the enchanted Kruger National Park, where we concentrate on taking pictures of the vast variety of mammals that live there, including all of the "big 5" and numerous additional ungulates. Where else in the world is it possible to take pictures of lions one day and penguins the next?
For customers who are particularly interested in birding, Nature Wanderers, known for their adaptability and unique packages, may offer specifically designed photography tours. We advise you and design your itinerary to coincide with South Africa's prime viewing times and locations. In conclusion, people who enjoy "birding with a camera" are the target audience for this South African picture safari of birds. We won't take the time to locate uncommon species or recognise tiny, drab birds. We'll concentrate on the photographic element and give ourselves plenty of time to capture the desired photos. We'll travel to some amazing locations, observe and photograph a wide variety of birds, and enjoy ourselves immensely.
