what are some roles that have been largely changed for cityrune? since you said queen was an influencer now :]
hi ty for asking me im vibrating. havent gotten to talk about this au now for three years and now that chapter 2 is like real and this time i can like........draw occasionally and i have more understanding of nuance...... [grips table] [screams]
this isnt quite what you asked but heres what's everyone from chapter 1 has been Up To with a little bit of context (and under a read more bc it got LENGTHY):
kris - professional stay at home teen (they live w/ asgore n help run the flower shop sometimes. this decision was entirely bc i dont like toriel). was wrongly diagnosed w Sudden Soul Rejection when they were incredibly young and given an experimental transplanted soul as a replacement. it works for them fine, give or take having to see gaster once a month for checkups. but sometimes the soul makes them skittish n decides they're going to sit in front of the pc and play 30 consecutive hours of a certain simulation game and not even let them drown people in the pool. if it were entirely up to them, they'd be like. passing out on the sofa to documentaries about bigfoot. or practicing cool knife tricks to impress their friends at their next tabletop meetup
- EDITED IN: the soul is kind of their friend. they are wearing a hypothetical get along shirt. most of the time, they agree on actions and things to do. tends to refer to themself + their soul as we/us which originally was just something they did in their head but they kept slipping in speech/text n just became a Thing of how they talk. switches to 'I/Me' whenever smth is wrong.
- also edited in: they believe the soul they have is their original soul bc nobody has told them otherwise. whenever theyre like 'oh yeah we think about our soul n view it as a separate entity to us like. all the time. it likes to hurt if we make too many choices it doesn't seem to like and kind of forces us to be a toned down version of what we want to be but thats just how souls are haha' and everyone is like.... 'Hey Kris That's Really Not How It Is.' theyre like. 'huh. gonna ignore that for now' - this was going to be a plot point
toriel - head of H0MEWOR1D (H01)'s department of education; kind of lost her roots as a simple math teacher as she was pushed into a lot of power she didn't even really seek out. divorced asgore over some miscommunications in their relationship; also loosely as a result of grief from asriel's death
asgore - the same. runs a lil flower/gift shop. people come in more to talk with him than to buy flowers most of the time, though
asriel Flowey - he's back in flower form, thanks to the government an accident. causes a lot of technology glitches wherever he goes, and wants revenge. isn't sure how to go about it. asriel "died" around 8 years before the story takes place and kris still misses him and refuses to even THINK about even the IDEA of calling someone their sibling after what happened, just in case it somehow happens a second time
susie - more of the same really. she spends most of her time either at grillby's (she's sort of become his assistant n helps with opening/closing. it just happened) or getting into low-stakes trouble w/ kris
noelle - she's in the city's equivalent of college and shes so tired. shes So Abysmally Tired n got kinda pushed 2 follow in her mom's footsteps. she's rarely around anymore except through text or on monsters & mages (dnd) night. (however.........she will come back w/ a long break n hang out w everyone again)
berdly - tbh i didnt even consider berdly when i made the au initially. idk what he's doing. probably in a similar situation to noelle??? canonically got kicked out of the M&M group due to clashes w/ other players but lurks in their group chat to posts memes sometimes
didnt rly think of any other of kris' classmates (+ their families) after ch1 and probably will continue to not, until chs 3-5 come out and i gotta whip up roles and histories for like. a lotta guys all of a sudden. i also forgot about noelle's parents
sans - runs a convenience store that everyone kind of thinks is a front, but also it has really cheap snacks and the local teens make a point of stopping there after school. so essentially, more of the same papyrus - similar to ut. is a very polite and sweet boy but you'll know when he's coming
grillby - he's back. he runs a bar like back in ut but the cozy vibes and weird-for-a-bar hours keep attracting kids who need parents, so half of his menu is comprised of overly sweet mocktails. usually only frequented by monsters
QC - same as usual. has a "rivalry" with grillbz but, theyre besties and have a book club
mettaton - he's real and he's back. he's similar to how he is back in ut w/ his EX body. likes to hang out at grillby's and talk to unsuspecting fans. has a show for everything
napstablook - similar to how they are in ut. helps mtt with making music sometimes. doesn't leave the house too often, but spends a lot of time posting on undernet
undyne - unfortunately. more of the same. she is a cop in the monster district. i am also upset by this but couldn't think of anything better for her
alphys - a doctor studying under dr. gaster in the hopes she'll one day take over his research. she spends most of her time as a nurse with a bigger title, though, and blocks out the weirdness of her job with anime.
gaster - weird guy. H01's top soul researcher and resident House wannabe. trying to manufacture the ultimate soul that can be controlled with simple internal switches, but so far he's only had 1 (very limited) success with a certain human. monsters just melt, and darkners just sorta......get weird... he's onto Something, though.
ralsei - lonely boy with some very strange hobbies. popular on UnderNet for poetry, baking videos, and general cryptid vibe. is the DM for the monsters & mages group (also seems to think everything is actually very fine in H01 when it is very much not)
lancer - about the same. professional Round Boy. lives w/ rouxls full time. follows susie around like a lost puppy and calls himself her "underling."
rouxls - runs a hotel/casino kind of deal where the objective Bad Guys hang out, and usually ends up doing any of the spade king's paperwork.
spade king - mafia godfather. kind of a dick. don't play cards with him
seam - works with the spade king as his right hand cat more or less because they have for a lot of years and are in that 'sunk cost fallacy' zone. thinks of retiring to a quiet life in the monster section of town like, daily
jevil - used to work with the spade king, but got imprisoned for Crimes. got weird after The Accident (separate from asriel's accident)
temmies (all) - dont really get mentioned except offhandedly but they run the monster space station. so far, are the only monsters who have ever been to space.
as far as chapter 2 goes:
yeah i dont have much so far for characters. in the original version of the au i accidentally made darkners as a whole just kinda..... not great? like all sorts of weird organized crime ties n sort of going out of their way to be A Problem to the city (not even in like. a revolution way. in a working against them but with the same goals kinda way). with the whole context it worked At The Time, bc i just had the spade king to look to as a villain, and also in this au the darkners are just trying to survive a world that ultimately was not built for them (that humans think they own, and monsters sort of... seeing this and wondering what it'll mean for them whichever one wins), but w/ new info abt how the dark world works n more guys to work with i want to kind of. edit the vibe a bit. like yea darkners will ultimately do whatever it takes to take over H01, but maybe in a better way than like. idk. all this. it doesnt have to be peaceful or anything it just has to be more adaptable as we meet more kinds of darkners
however yeah i thought up 'queen as some sort of childless mommy blogger/influencer' and that completely revived all memory i had of this au. she should be on mtt's talkshow. also she sells collectible wine glasses w/ her likeness
spamton is another one of gaster's failed soul experiments, but he hasn't melted yet, and seems............fine? sort of. so he hasn't gotten decommissioned yet. he does want to give you malware tho. hot monster singles in your area n all that
im blanking on the rest of the guys but i hope any of this was comprehensible

“Well, at least we know where she is now.”
Kris was quick to give Tao a very deserved smack to the back of the head. The latter glared at the one who hit him, but didn’t fight back.
“We don’t know where she is,” Luhan said through teeth clenched so tight his jaw muscles were crying from the pain. But it was either that or completely destroy the room to let out his desperation and frustration.
“There was nothing else in the envelope?” Yixing asked, his own voice thick with worry. “Nothing that might say where the picture was taken?”
Tao turned the envelope upside down and shook it, but nothing else fell out.
“Why taunt you like this if they aren’t going to give a place for us to fall into their trap?” Kris wondered.
Yixing frowned. “You think it’s a trap?”
Kris nodded. “Positive. Why else take her and then send a picture like this? I doubt they know the exact nature of Luhan’s relationship with (y/n), but I guarantee that they know about her involvement with the murder and the investigation against Luhan. Especially since word of us taking her from the motel had started to spread.”
“So, what?” Luhan scoffed. He sntached the picture from Tao and glowered down at the glossy surface. Streaks of lights bounced off photo paper despite the darkness of the subject. Without even thinking, his fingernails ripped through the back of the picture and his handles crumbled the remaining scraps before throwing the ball across the room. “I couldn’t care less as to why they took her. We need to get her back. I promised her I would keep her safe and get her back home. I plan on keeping that promise if I have to die trying.”
“Since when did the genre of our lives go from a crime thriller to a love drama?” Tao uttered underneath his breath.
“Tragic love lives tend to be the norm in this business,” Yixing replied with a downcast face. The female doctor looked at him curiously, but said nothing.
Luhan swallowed. “I need this to be a different ending.”
Tao tossed down the envelope where it landed near the woman’s feet. “We can’t do anything if we don’t know where to start.”
Frowning, the woman bent down and picked up the envelope, holding it up to the light. Noticing the strange action, Yixing straightened up.
“What are you doing?”
“I thought I saw something earlier….” The woman ripped the sides of the envelope to expose the inside. Sure enough, right within the lining was an address, small and easily missed if one was looking directly into the enclosure.
“So, that’s where the trap is,” Luhan said thoughtfully.
“Do we go in guns blazing?” Tao asked a little too gleefully.
“Not exactly,” Luhan shot down. A new determination was in his eyes, a fire roared to life as if a can of lighter fluid had been poured over it.  “But we are going. Soon.”
He was going to get you back. He was going to make sure that you made it home, even if it meant he had to take his last breath.
**
If your subconscious had been able to imagine the situation you would be in once you woke up, this… was not it.
No, it wasn’t a luxury hotel or even Luhan’s mansion, but at least you weren’t chained to a wall or tied to an unforgiving chair. Although your wrists did hurt and red indentions told you that you might have been restrained at one point, you were free to roam around now. The room you were in was tiny, like a broom closet, but it still held a bed and dresser with enough room to maneuver around.
Even as you slipped off the bed, you braced yourself for the inevitable outcome. You were in this room for a reason and you doubted Detective Zhuang wanted you anywhere. But if you didn’t try, you felt that you would be giving up. You didn’t fight to stay alive this entire time only to sit down a hundred feet from the finish line.
You couldn’t believe it. It turned. The doorknob turned. Not only did the knob turn, the door opened. Was this a trap? A tease?
You didn’t care. You’d take the risk of the rogue officer mocking you. The door opened up to an industrial-looking hallway. Maybe this room really was a closet at one point.
Stepping out with one foot, you went slowly, checking every direction for any sign of life that might force you back into the room. There was none so you kept going.
As you went farther down the hallway you could hear the faintest of voices. You were more than certain you were getting closer to the main area of the industrial building. The only questions left were why were you here and what would happen to you if you were caught.
The end of the hallway came. There was no exit in the opposite direction so these doors were your only option. Quiet as a mouse, you pushed one of the doors open and peeked your head through. Several burly looking men were roaming around, unpacking guns from wooden crates, going over what could have either been checklists or invoices, among other nefarious activities. Though her back was to you, it was easy enough to pick out Detective Zhuang as she spoke to one of the men.
Now that you’d pinpointed your kidnapper, you searched around the large open room for the exit that could lead to freedom. You nearly cheered out loud from relief. The exit was along the same wall the hallway entrance was and most of the way was blocked by oversized crates. Perhaps fate didn’t hate you so much after all.
While moving in a slow, cautious way in order to avoid drawing attention, you snuck out between the doors and headed for the exit, bent over nearly in half so you didn’t create a shadow that would show beyond the crates. You hurried towards the doors, already thinking of different scenarios that would take you back to Luhan.
Freedom was just within your reach. Only a couple more steps and-
“So glad you’re awake now.”
Damn it!
You didn’t consider any alternative. You ran for the door, hoping to make it out, but Detective Zhuang’s men were quicker. Two blocked your path while another practically body slammed you into the wall and then caged you within his arms. You kicked and squirmed to no avail as he carried you over to the woman who’d made your life hell. No courtesy was given to you. The man practically threw you down to the ground at Detective Zhuang’s feet. There was no holding back the whimper in your throat as your knees and palms scraped against the rough concrete floor.
“You shouldn’t have tried to run,” Detective Zhuang shrugged as you nursed your wounds.
“You didn’t have to kidnap me in the first place,” you retorted.
She shrugged. “You should have learned to mind your business.”
“Just let me go home like you promised,” you begged. “That’s all I want.”
That was a lie. It wasn’t anywhere near the only thing you wanted right now. You wanted to see Luhan one more time, to warn him about who was really behind all of this. And to say goodbye, if this really was the end.
Detective Zhuang sighed sympathetically. “I can't do that now. You know too much.”
“Too much?” You scoffed. “I hardly know anything. I don’t know why you’re doing this. Why you’re going against the very laws you swore to uphold.”
Bending down to meet you at your level, her eyes searched your own before drifting down the ground. “I used to believe in good. I used to believe in the law. Now all I believe in is the balance of life and death.”
You shook your head. “Why? What happened?” It was impossible to know why, but you wanted to understand. Hell, you almost needed to understand. Maybe if she gave you the reason, you could find a way to change her mind.
It was silent for a minute or two, only the sounds of your breathing reaching your ears. Finally, she looked up at you. “I grew up in the world that Luhan controls. Before he ever rose to power, there was my father. He was the most feared in the criminal world. He ruled the underground and no police force dared to touch him. Admittedly, while growing up, I hated him. I hated what he stood for and I vowed to be nothing like him. So I became the opposite of what he was. I became the best damn officer in the city. But he was still my father. I still loved him, whether I could admit it or not.
“Then a man named Luhan started taking over, occupying territory he had no right to. And he eliminated anyone who stood in his way.” Detective Zhuang licked her lips and gave a humorless smirk. “I think you can guess what happened next. My father was taken from me, so I’m going to keep taking from Luhan until the scales are once again equal. I’ve been ruining his business, but I need more. I need his life.”
“There is nothing equal in taking a life for another life,” you argued. “If he really is the reason your father died, then as a detective, you should have let the law do its job. You can’t take justice into your own hands.”
That was apparently the wrong thing to say. Grasping your chin and digging her fingernails into your skin, she hissed, “You think I didn’t consider that? There was no physical evidence connecting his death to Luhan. And no judge would be brave enough to convict him.”
“Killing him still isn’t the solution.” It was probably a huge mistake to continue insisting that she was wrong, but you couldn’t help yourself. She wanted to kill Luhan. And you didn’t even want to imagine a world where he wasn’t walking around with that big stupid smile on his face. “He has two others with him. Even if he were to die, they’d still keep going.”
Pushing herself back up, Detective Zhuang laughed once. “I don’t care about their business. They can do what they want. As soon as I have Luhan lying cold in the ground, I’m leaving the country, happy and content for avenging my father.”
You shook your head. “That won’t make you happy. Anyone with any sort of common sense knows that.”
Bang!
You flinched at the noise, thinking maybe she’d finally had enough and shot you. But no pain came. In fact, it wasn’t a gun at all that made the noise. It was the main doors being shoved open. The air was ripped from your lungs as you watched Luhan strut in, his normal air of confidence tenfold. Only part of you was relieved, however. You knew he was in danger and waltzing in here like he was invincible was a dumb move. But it was also very him.
“I honestly thought you would come sooner,” Detective Zhuang mocked. “Have difficulty finding the place?”
“Not really,” Luhan replied in the same cheeky tone. “Especially since you printed it on the inside of the envelope.”
Detective Zhuang shrugged. “I couldn’t make it too easy for you.” Reaching back behind her, she pulled out a pistol, clicking back the barrel to make sure a round was in the chamber before aiming the weapon at your head. “But now that you’re here, we can attend to business.”
Luhan threw his hands up, stopping in his tracks immediately. “I should have known it was you. (y/n) would trust you, especially since she can’t understand Chinese.”
This whole time, you’d been able to keep up with everything that was going on, but now you were lost. “What are you talking about?”
For the first time since he’d walked in, he met your eyes. “Remember that day in the car? Outside the precinct?” You nodded. “You were happy to recognize her voice, but what you didn’t know what she was saying. The other detectives were asking about who to find you, but she didn’t care. She told them to forget about you and to follow other leads. They had your statement, why would they need to find you again?”
“Why would I need to find her?” Detective Zhuang agreed. “I knew you had her. I knew where your mansion was located and that you would keep any threat to your precious empire close. If she got hurt along the way, then so be it.”
You felt like an idiot. Her words in the beginning, in that interview room… you fell for them hook, line, and sinker. “Did you plan for me to get taken?”
“I didn’t think Luhan would come get you himself, but I knew he’d try to get his hands on you one way or another. I couldn’t care less if you had proper protection. He’d keep you safe for the time being, until I had use for you. ”
“Because you’re so clever,” Luhan said dryly.
Rolling her eyes, Detective Zhuang said, “You might want to watch that mouth. I’m a little heavy fingered and I’d hate to prematurely pull the trigger. Then again, now that we’re face to face, neither of us really need her, do we?”
All jesting was gone from Luhan’s voice. “If you want me, you’ll let her go. Now.”
Detective Zhuang acted as if she were really thinking about it, even moving her gun from you to Luhan. “That was a bit demanding, Luhan. Why would you care if a stupid foreigner died or not?” A few seconds of silence went by and then she laughed. “Don’t tell me the great Deer fell for someone? You actually let yourself develop a weakness? Well, this changes everything.” She trained her gun on you once more. “I was just going to kill you slowly. But now… now I think I’ll kill her first and let you sit on that for a while, so you can feel what I felt when you killed my father.”
“No!” Luhan fell to his knees, panic striking in his eyes. “Stick with your original plan. Kill me. Torture me. But let her go. She doesn’t deserve this!”
More silence filled the room. All the men standing around flickered their eyes back and forth between the stand off.
“I’ve considered your offer,” she said, “but I think I’ll decline. So say goodbye- AH!”
The gun fell from Detective Zhuang’s grip. She clutched her hand to her chest and your eyes widened in horror as you saw red liquid run down her wrist. Luhan jumped back up to his feet and ran to you while the main doors swung open once more.
Kris and Tao charged into the room, guns in every hand that lit up with each bullet that left their chambers. Luhan tugged you out of the fire’s way, making sure to keep his body between you and the fight. Crouching behind a wall of crates, he turned your around and cradled your face as he searched for any signs of injury.
“I’m alright,” you insisted, but he didn’t stop looking.
“Are you sure? She’s had you for hours and-”
You stopped him with a quick kiss. Perhaps the wrong moment, but you were too happy to be near him again to care. “I’m fine. I promise.”
Closing his eyes, he leaned his forehead against yours. “I thought I’d lost you for good. I thought you’d ran away from me.”
“Technically, I did,” you confessed. “She said she was going to send me home. I had to take the chance. I guess I should have thought about it a little more.”
Luhan pulled back and shook his head before pulling you back into a hug. “I don’t blame you.”
“Okay!” Tao called out from the other side of the barrier. “The people are dead!”
Getting back to your feet, Luhan made sure to stay in front of you as the two of you emerged from safety. Bodies littered the ground, making you shrink into his back. You wanted to leave. Now.
“That was quick,” Luhan said, impressed.
“They weren’t the best marksmen,” Tao shrugged.
Kris frowned at his right shoulder. “But I liked this shirt.”
Tao laughed. “I told you to change before we came.”
“Speaking of marksmen….” Luhan looked up at the ceiling, eyes scanning the windows that lined the top of the warehouse. A vague shadow moved on the other side. One of the windows above the crates opened and a figure landed on top of them before climbing down the side.
“Yixing?” You gasped at the doctor who came over, a long range rifle strapped to his back.
He nodded at you, but there wasn’t any hint of a smile on his face. “Glad to see you’re safe.”
You, however, did give him a small one. “Thank you.”
“Come on,” Luhan urged. “Let's get out of here.”
“Don’t worry,” Kris said. “We’ll take care of this.”
Luhan gave him a short nod and led you out of the warehouse where you could breathe normally for the first time in too long.

Deltarune Theory - The Red SOUL
It’s pretty clear that, in Deltarune, the person we are “playing” as is not Kris directly, but the red SOUL that is controlling them.
After all, when Kris tosses the SOUL out of their body, we can still control it.
So then, the question is... Who IS the red SOUL?
In this post, I’ll go over several theories, their main points, and evidence for them and against them.
It’s not Kris’ SOUL.
With the information we have, it’s nearly impossible for this SOUL to belong to Kris.
First of all, in the Dark World, Kris’ description describes them as follows:
Tumblr media
“Body contains a human SOUL.” Not “THEIR” human SOUL, “A” human SOUL. That’s just about the most suspicious-sounding way you could possibly word that.
Second, the first time we go to save the game, a save file titled “Kris” is overwritten by one with the chosen name of the “creator”.
Tumblr media
And, throughout the epilogue, everyone keeps pointing out how strange they’re acting, how they aren’t like themself...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’re acting unlike themself because they aren’t themself - they’re being controlled by someone else.
... Someone who knows some things Kris doesn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Because of the above two, I’m going to assume that all of the dialogue choices come from the red SOUL.)
The SOUL also seems a little, um, opinionated:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they apparently don’t know who Rudy is, when Kris definitely does.
Tumblr media
So... who could they be?
Theory 1: The Player (“Player Theory”)
This is probably the most popular theory going around right now. In this theory, the red SOUL represents us, the “player”, as an actual in-game entity.
This is an understandable interpretation, as Undertale is known to be very meta at times. It’s not totally unthinkable that ‘we’ exist as an actual force in-universe.
Evidence against Player Theory
There’s a significant amount of evidence that the red SOUL has their own personality and is their own person, such as:
Tumblr media
They have their own opinions on Mew Mew 2.
Tumblr media
They can’t play the piano. I’d imagine a lot of players can, so it’s strange to put this here if they’re meant to be the player. It would be odd to exclude a significant amount of the player base (including Toby himself) for, um, literally no reason.
Support for Player Theory
According to Deltarune’s official website, Deltarune is a game “intended for people who have completed UNDERTALE.” Therefore, the “player” is supposed to know everything that happens in Undertale.
Therefore, these interactions make sense:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... Because the player knows who Sans is, and they know that Alphys and Undyne were dating in Undertale.
...However, there is someone else who knows all the same things about the Undertale universe that the player does.
Theory 2: Frisk
From Undertale, we know that Frisk has a red SOUL. This theory says that the red SOUL present in Deltarune is also the very same Frisk from the Undertale universe.
Evidence against Frisk Theory
Toby has said this about Deltarune in relation to Undertale:
Tumblr media
...so, that shoots a bit of a hole in this... but. Hear me out.
[EDIT]
On February 14th 2019, a FAQ section was added to the official Deltarune website. One of the questions is:
Tumblr media
Basically confirming that there are “connections” between the Undertale and Deltarune universes.
So... I guess there isn’t any evidence against this theory, now.
[END EDIT]
Support for Frisk Theory
Like the “player”, Frisk knows everything that happened in Undertale. They’re friends with Sans, so they would be excited to see him. They know Alphys and Undyne are dating, so they would be eager to ask Undyne about her girlfriend. And they don’t know who Rudy is.
And, of course... there’s the intro sequence.
Gaster prompts us to create a “vessel” to hold our SOUL...
Tumblr media
A vessel that just so happens to always have exactly two stripes on their shirt.
However, the person that interrupts the intro - Chara, if you remember my post about it - doesn’t seem very happy about this whole vessel thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... Which would make sense if the red SOUL is actually Frisk. Frisk is Chara’s friend, Chara wouldn’t let Gaster suddenly try to turn them into a whole different person. So... What if Chara was actually trying to say “Your name is Frisk”, but was cut off?
After all, in Undertale, there’s a scene that this is likely meant to be a parallel to...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... And, of course, after beating the game, we know the speaker of this line is Asriel, and he was saying, well, “My name is Asriel”.
Speaking of Chara... the voice of the narration in Deltarune is suspiciously similar to Undertale’s, and at some points, seems to almost intentionally call back to Undertale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(In case you’re not convinced by the above one - it matches word-for-word in the official Japanese translations, as well.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Which would make sense if, not only are we playing as Frisk once again...
Tumblr media
...But Chara is the narrator once again, as well.
Of course, Frisk themselves could just as easily be the narrator. It’s difficult to tell at this point. I’m personally leaning towards Chara, though.
Also, it’s probably just a bizarre joke, but this line would make a lot more sense if the person controlling Kris was actually a child:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite thing about this theory is that if it is true, Toby would have tricked us into thinking Frisk is actually an in-game representation of the player not once, but twice.
Theory 3: Chara and Asriel’s Combined SOUL
This theory proposes that the SOUL is a combined human-monster soul - specifically, Chara and Asriel’s.
It’s said in Undertale that Asriel absorbed Chara’s SOUL, and then died. However, it’s never explicitly stated that the SOUL shattered. We know that a human SOUL can persist after death presumably indefinitely if preserved properly, and a boss monster SOUL can survive outside the body for a few seconds... But we don’t know how long a combined human-monster SOUL could last outside its body.
Evidence against Combined SOUL Theory
There’s no evidence in the game that the SOUL belongs to two people. In Undertale, Asriel states that when he and Chara were sharing a SOUL, control was split between them, and they were both actively fighting for control over their body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There isn’t any instance of any sort of “internal argument” within the SOUL. Unless you interpret the differing dialogue choices as such, but even so, you’d think there’d be more of a hint that there’s actually two people fighting for control. But who knows, maybe it’ll only become more obvious in later chapters...?
Support for Combined SOUL Theory
The red SOUL is... odd. And I don’t mean their personality, I mean the SOUL itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(screenshot and gif from this post, which is what inspired this theory!)
When Kris removes the SOUL from their body... It glows red and white. White, of course, is the color of a monster SOUL.
While it could just be a visual effect... It’s at least one more thing to be suspicious about.
And, like I touched on before, we never know what exactly happened to Chara and Asriel’s combined SOUL. Some people think it could even be the red heart in this machine in Undertale’s True Lab:
Tumblr media
... and, with this theory... perhaps that machine might be somehow connected to the Deltarune universe.
Theory 4: Suzy
No, not Susie, Suzy! The one from Undertale. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, read this post.
This is my personal favorite theory, even though it’s quite unlikely. The premise of this theory is that Suzy is actually a human, and the red SOUL belongs to her.
Of course, a lot of people think “Suzy” is simply the Undertale universe version of “Susie”. That’s fair, and that theory certainly fits in with “fast approaching”. But I’m going to assume they’re completely different people for the sake of this theory. (Plus, why would Susie be the only character with a different name from their Undertale counterpart..?)
Evidence against Suzy Theory
This theory doesn’t have an explanation as to why the red SOUL knows about Alphys and Undyne’s relationship. (If you can come up with one, please tell me.) I mean, even though she exists in the Undertale universe, they only get together at the very end, and Suzy almost certainly wasn’t there. But who knows. Maybe she’s been shipping them the whole time. /s
Also, as much as I love the concept, it is quite unlikely that Suzy is a human. I do have a couple of explanations for it as you’ll see below, but I will admit that it’s still kind of a stretch. Still, what’s theory-making without a little fun?
Support for Suzy Theory
No matter whether or not Suzy ends up being the red SOUL, or even a human, she has to be in the full version of Deltarune. And, considering what we know... It’s not a stretch at all to think she might be in the very first chapter.
Tumblr media
“Don’t Forget.” The title of the main theme of Deltarune is a phrase that is specifically associated with Suzy. In Undertale, you can only see the “don’t forget” note in Sans’ lab after speaking with Clamgirl and, consequently, learning about the existence of “Suzy”. Therefore, the phrase “don’t forget” is intrinsically linked to her.
This note also gives us another hint about who Suzy is: She knows Sans.
Tumblr media
... Hm.
And, of course, her knowing Sans in combination with the fact that you only learn about her when you have certain “fun” values... it’s likely she knows Gaster, or at least of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, I think you see where I’m going with this...
Now, for the “Suzy is a human” part. I’ve actually had this theory since before Deltarune, but I never made a post about it or anything.
In Undertale’s No Mercy route, Sans says something quite... interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This line of dialogue implies that Sans knows or knew someone with Determination. A lot of people theorize that this line is referring to Gaster, who may have injected himself with Determination, which is a valid theory... However, I think Sans knew a human. Specifically, a human girl named Suzy.
Sans also knows a lot about concepts such as “LOVE” and “EXP”, and has secret passwords for “time travelers”. This implies that not only did he know someone with Determination, but likely with someone with the ability to “saving”, “loading”, and “resetting”... and, combined with what he talks about in his fight about “knowing our type”... it’s likely this person did a “no mercy run” in the past, or at least killed a significant amount of people.
Wait. If Suzy is a human, and she’s still alive in Undertale... How does she manage to survive in a world of monsters who need just one more human SOUL to break the barrier?
Well.
I have a few theories...
Sub-theory 1: LOVE
I mentioned before that if Suzy is a human, it’s possible, even likely, she has high LOVE.
And, well..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently, once you reach 20 LOVE, you become completely unrecognizable as a human being. Even to the king of all monsters, who would otherwise even compare Frisk to his own dead human child.
Sub-theory 2: “Goner” form
Clamgirl’s “fast approaching” line shows us that, apparently, some people can switch between their “normal” forms and their “goner” (grey) forms at will.
If a human had this ability... perhaps their SOUL would also turn grey? Then it would appear more like a monster SOUL than a human one. Sure, it would still be upside-down, but it’s an interesting thing to think about.
Speaking of “goner” forms...
Tumblr media
In the files, Deltarune’s vessel creation sequence is called “GONERMAKER”.
Sub-theory 3: She’s not fully human
Remember earlier how I mentioned how the red SOUL glows red and white in the ending sequence, and how that could possibly be a hint towards the SOUL being not fully human? Well, that could apply here, as well. It’s possible Suzy could be half-monster, but we don’t even know if that’s a possible thing. I’m thinking that perhaps she could have had her SOUL infused with monster magic or dust or something of the like, since it’s likely Gaster experimented with SOULs at some point.
Sub-theory 4: Someone is hiding her/concealing her identity as human
Since Clamgirl talks about Suzy being her neighbor’s daughter, it’s possible her parent is protecting her or even hiding her. I’m not sure how exactly this would work, but it’s a possiblity.
There’s also a few other things I’d like to mention about this theory that I couldn’t fit in:
1. Clamgirl tells Frisk that “In life’s grand scheme, [Suzy] might be why [they] came here in the first place”. This could be implying that Frisk knows Suzy from the surface, which would support the theory that she’s a human. However, it could just as easily be Clamgirl going on about how Frisk and Suzy are fated to meet, especially considering Clamgirl’s phrasing makes it seem like Frisk and Suzy haven’t met before.
2. Clamgirl’s “Fast approaching” line only appears in the Switch version of Undertale, which was released less than two months before chapter one of Deltarune came out. There are 3 possibilities you could take from this:
a. Clamgirl was lying (unlikely)
b. Deltarune’s release was a distraction from some more content coming soon that will actually feature Suzy
c. Suzy is in chapter one of Deltarune.
Conclusion
Anyway, those are the four theories I could come up with on who the red SOUL could be. It could also be a completely new character. Who knows.
Well, now that you’ve read this far... I’d actually like to gather some data. I’m curious what people think the most likely outcome is after reading this. If you could take a few seconds to vote on this poll, I’d really appreciate it!

WHAT IS YOUR TOTAL WORD COUNT ON AO3?
203.791 words
HOW OFTEN DO YOU WRITE?
As often as I can? I’ve been pretty good about writing regularly this year, trying to squeeze out at least a few words every day, though there’ve been week long holes where I didn’t write anything (because of holidays or just because). This month has been terrible writing-wise so far, but it’s not over yet and all in all I’m pretty happy with how this year has been going writing-wise!
DO YOU HAVE A ROUTINE FOR WRITING?
Not particularly, no. I’ve got an hour long train ride to uni, so when classes are on I often get quite a bit written on the journey there and back again (or at least on one trip^^°). I also often find myself writing late at night, in bed - I’m not sure how good that is for my grammar, though! Other than that I write when free time and inspiration match up (for once).
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE KINKS/TROPES/PAIRING?
My favourite ships are definitely Sterek and Merthur, both when writing and reading. I’ve also written some Stisaac, Stoyd, and Stackson plus a smattering of fics for other ships (mostly for prompts people sent me). I still want to write a proper Drarry fic one day!! That ship is high on the favourite ships to read list, too, along with Wincest and Spirk. I also sometimes get these reading crazes, like earlier this year I only read 00Q fics for a few weeks?! But really, I’ve read TONS of ships, it’d take way too long to list them all here (but I’m happy to talk about them in more depth if there’s any interest in that :p).
As for tropes - GIMME ALL THE TROPES!!! I adore my tropes, both the straightforward ones and the ones turned on their heads! I am a sucker for pining, cannot get enough of soulmate AUs, Harry Potter AUs, and just a long list of other AUs :p For Sterek Neckz’n’Throats is a definite favourite, along with BAMF!Stiles and Spark!Stiles, for Merthur it’s modernRoyalty and royal!Merlin (send me links, people!!!) and probably a ton more that I can’t think of right now :p Writing wise I love a soulmate AU, and I used to write mostly meet-cutes. Nowadays it’s more lengthy pining and misunderstandings fics^^°
Finally - kinks! The most explicit thing I’ve written so far was some clothed rubbing off on each other, so yeah, not much to say writing-wise^^° And for reading it just depends on the author! If you give me a well written kink, I’ll probably like it! Generally there’s rather a list of kinks I don’t like rather than kinks I like? (though even that can be challenged when written well - I’m really not into water sports, but one fic managed to portray golden showers of all things as very emotional and touching) I do like a well written BDSM fic, but I’m very picky about those, and who can spend any time in Teen Wolf fandom without developing a fondness for knotting?^^
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FIC OF YOURS?
Mmhmm, not the one single fic that stands out, but I can perhaps narrow it down to a favourite per ship?
Starting with the easier bit, my favourite Stisaac fic is definitely Aunt Mable doesn’t count. That one is just perfectly fun and cute, I think^^.
For Stoyd, it’s a tie between Queen Maeve and Pas de Deux. Queen Maeve was my first time writing an established relationship rather than them getting together and I’m still really proud of how that relationship is the driving force of the fic rather than any external antagonist or the like. And in Pas de Deux I got to write Stiles and Boyd dancing Ballet and I really like how that came out, plus how their relationship progresses in that fic.
For Stackson it’s always going to be Pigtails (at least until I’ve written the sequels :p). This fic was my way of figuring out how those two could fit together and I just really love how it turned out.
With Merthur it becomes hard already - I love both Homebound and through this life and into the next (this is a marriage of equals) for different reasons. Homebound allowed to work through some issues with Merlin and Arthur’s relationship and the things they said and didn’t say to each other, and through this life and into the next (this is a marriage of equals) just has all the lovely tropes - arranged marriage, misunderstandings, pining, magic reveal, druid!Merlin, snarky Kilgharrah.^^ But if I have to decide on one of my shorter ones, my favourite is the best thing since Anne McCaffrey, because it’s adorable if I may say so myself! :p
And now, finally: Sterek! How could I ever decide?? I still love Of dogs and deer darcy, my first Soulmark fic, and also very much Fully grown which was written for the same prompt but turned out completely different! (those two are also my most successful fics by far, so perhaps I should write more soulmark AUs?) I love my fairy tale reimaginations (Rose and Thorn, to live happily ever after (a tale of sparks and wolves) and The Waterline Divides Us) and my Solstice Sterekzine alien!Stiles fic Constellations. And finally, even if apparently no one agrees, I love the only lonely boy in New York - come on, guys, how can you resist angsty musician Derek writing songs about his feelings!!! There’s pining and misunderstandings and love confessions through songs and dramatic reunions!!!! Give it a chance :D
YOUR FIC WITH THE MOST KUDOS?
Fully grown recently overtook Of dogs and deer darcy
ANYTHING YOU DON’T LIKE ABOUT YOUR WRITING?
Everything and nothing? It’s hard to pin it down - if I could easily do that, I could fix it! Writing process-wise I wish I’d not be as obsessed with getting every detail right (especially frustrating for teen wolf, where I don’t just have to fix my own mistakes, but all the inconsistencies canon has left us to deal with). It can really hold me back, because I’ll feel like I have to figure out the timeline or the motivation of the villain or the way the fight can logically go first before I can write anything! On the other hand, details are important in writing and I have gotten compliments on how everything fit together so perfectly, so there’s that!
NOW SOMETHING YOU DO LIKE (ABOUT YOUR WRITING)?
That’s even harder! I can’t think of anything right now, which is terrible because I do like my writing! Honestly, though, I’d much rather hear what you guys like about my writing (if anyone is still reading this), so if you can think of anything, please let me know!
First ship you ever read fic for:
Finally an easy question again! Drarry! Back during one of those long waits for the next Harry Potter novel I was trying to look something up and stumbled across this strange story, written in the world of Harry Potter, and after like 50k, Draco came out of the Forbidden Forest and he and Harry embraced and kissed and I was like - huh? I guess that works? And that was my first foray into fanfiction and I never looked back!
First ship you ever wrote fic for:
I wrote some fix-it fic for Fred’s death after the deathly hallows, but that never saw the light of day and I’m no longer sure how shippy it was. The first ship I ever wrote and published fic for was Sterek!
Ship you write the most now:
Sterek, without a doubt
Ship you read the most now:
That always depends on my current mood, but over all, the answer is still Sterek
Newest ship:
Like, properly, “reading a lot of fic for”? Probably 00Q, though that’s from the beginning of the year, where I had a phase which has since stopped again^^°
Rare ship you want to read more of:
For Clara and myself: Eowyn/Aragorn (we’ve dubbed them Arawyn, the long forgotten musketeer :p)
Your taboo ship:
I’ve got a few incest ships and not just in the badwrong way, so those? (because dammit, wincest are canonically soulmates!!!)
They never met in canon ship:
Laura/Lydia? (and if we go back to my Harry Potter days there’s a few more there :p)
Your unexpected ship:
Let’s go with Kradam (Kris Allen and Adam Lambert from American Idol once upon a time). I haven’t seen a single episode (nevermind season) of American Idol and I fell in love with them purely through fics (I blame Jerakeenc).
The ship you always forget to give love to:
Stoyd probably - I’ve been meaning to write an arranged marriage royalty AU for years!
Ship your OC with a canon character (if applicable):
I don’t really have many OCs, certainly not ones I ship with anyone! I tend to go for canon characters instead - it’s more limiting in a way, but also fun to figure out who might fit which story/character best and how they have to change to fit etc.
A ship you’re embarrassed to ship:
Ship and let ship! I’m not super loud about some of my ships, but that doesn’t mean I’m embarrassed about them! Like, I’ll freely admit I ship incest and rpf ships...
Your most romantic ship:
Sterek!!!!
Your sexiest ship:
Stoyd is the only one I’ve written anything resembling a sex scene for so far, so it’ll have to be that one!
Your most tragic ship:
There’s no other possible answer but Merthur here!!! The neck stroking, the forehead touch, the just hold me, the PAIN, THE TEARS
A ship you want more content for:
eeeeeeeevery ship!!! No really, write, art, create for the ships you love, people, whatever that might be! I mean, we have almost 55k Sterek stories on AO3 (wooh!!) and I still want more! It doesn’t matter how much or little there is already, I promise there’s someone out there who’ll want more of it :D
I’ve apparently used up all of my brain power of the day for this and can’t think of anyone to tag, so I’m tagging all of you - if you’d like to ramble about your writing, go ahead! (And I’ll repeat my plea from earlier - I’d love to hear what you like about my writing!)

The Weekend Warrior Home Edition May 1, 2020 – THE WRETCHED, VANILLA, DEERSKIN, BULL
Just think...  this weekend would have been the start of the summer box office with Marvel’s Black Widow before COVID came along. Now, we’re waiting for anywhere from two to three months or longer for the next big studio release in movie theaters with so many other “big” movies already being dumped to digital.
This is yet another week with no movies in theaters unless you’re in driving distance to a drive-in (i.e. you have a car), but at least we have some great stuff to watch at home, including a few virtual film festivals and virtual cinemas.
The first major disaster brought on by the advent of COVID-19 was the cancellation of the annual SXSW Festival in Austin. The movie that was supposed to open the fest, Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island, starring Pete Davidson, was supposed to open SXSW in March and then play Tribeca earlier this month, but Universal reported earlier this week that it was going to release it via digital download on June 12, the same day it was going to get a theatrical release.
Amazon has teamed with SXSW to screen 39 projects, including seven features, that will screen free of charge on Amazon from April 27 through May 6. The four narrative features available are the British-Bulgarian dramedy Cat in the Wall from Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova, which is being compared to Ken Loch’s I, Daniel Blake. There’s also the Guatemalan romance Gunpowder Heart, the French period film Le Choc du Futur and the French sci-fi anthology, Selfie.  The docs being offered are Karen Bernstein’s I’m Gonna Make You Love Me is described as “Fellini meets Motown” about one man’s search for self-acceptance, while Matt Riddlehoover’s My Darling Vivian about Johnny Cash’s first wife, Vivian Liberto, who gave the country singer four daughters. Last up is Alex Lee Moyer’s TFW no GW, a doc about the state of isolation, rejection and alienation that we all seemed to be feeling these days. There will also be a ton of shorts available that you can learn more about at The Hollywood Reporter.
The second weekend of the Virtual Oxford Film Festival will launch a few more feature premieres, as well as a virtual panel and the Fest Forward collection of experimental films. First up, on Friday, May 1 is a panel called “Creating Black Stories in Mississippi” at noon central time, and if you’re interested in that, you may want to check out the Mississippi Shorts, Getting to the Root and 70 Years of Blackness, which will now run through May 8, giving you more time to see them. Friday will also see the premieres of Daniel Lafrentz’s crime-drama The Long Shadow, preceded by Will Goss’ short, Sweet Steel. (Hey! I know Will Goss!) There will be a Zoom Q&A for the two movies on Wednesday, May 6, at 6pm Central. Also available Friday is Travis Beard’s doc, Rockabul, which is about the Afghan band District Unknown who fought against the USA’s counter-culture campaign by challenging freedom of expression and youth identify in Kabul with a QnA on May 8 at 8pm central. The Fest Forward Collection includes 8 international animated films from places like Estonia and Egypt, and those will have a virtual QnA on Saturday, May 2, at 1pm Central. (All of these Oxford QnAs and panels are recorded and available to watch for as long as the films are available to watch.)  You can get tickets for all these movies and events on Eventive.

This week’s Featured Film is the Pierce Brothers’ (Brett and Drew Pierce) horror flick, THE WRETCHED (IFC Midnight), which was a nice surprise since I’m not as easy a lay when it comes to horror flicks as other “horror fan” movie writers. The film involves a somewhat quizzical premise that isn’t too apparent as it begins, as we’re not exactly sure what is going on as it begins. It stars John Paul Howard as Ben, a young man living with his father (Jamison Jones), who has separated from Ben’s mother, as the two of them work at the nearby marina over the summer. Ben is immediately picked on and bullied by the locals, but he’s more distracted by the odd behavior of the woman next door (played by Madelyn Stunenkel). I’m not going to go too far into spoiler territory but the premise does involve witchcraft and an ancient evil that’s cropped up in the small town and is causing the disappearance of many small children… maybe… most of their parents seem to forget they have kids as they follow under the spell of the evil Ben’s discovered.
This is just a fantastic little scarer that at times reminded me of the original Fright Night, and I was really impressed with what the Pierce Brothers, first of all by working with a cast of great lesser-known actors, but the visual FX are fantastic and every aspect of the film’s mood and tone is just about perfect. I guess I’ve seen so much low budget horror that doesn’t really match the standards or production values of even some of the smaller-budget Blumhouse movies.
While you may not be near any of the scattered drive-in across the country that will probably be playing the movie, I definitely recommend downloading and/or renting it if you’re a fan of quality horror. The Pierces are extremely talented filmmakers who I’m sure will be doing better things down the road. For me, this is right up there with The Invisible Man, as far as this year’s stronger horror films.
Tumblr media
Out now on VOD and Digital is Will Dennis’ quirky road comedy VANILLA (Gravitas Ventures) about a comedian (Kelsea Bauman) who goes on a three-day road trip from New York to New Orleans with an ice cream entrepreneur (Dennis), to sell his van with a questionable past to his ex-girlfriend. Both of them see the trip as a date, of sorts, but they set up a number of rules and boundaries to make the trip work.  It’s a pretty simple premise that’s made more fun by the unique elements Dennis introduces. Vanilla is a sweet, cute romantic movie with two actors appearing in their first movie that reminds me a little of the early work of the Duplass Brothers or Joe Swanberg where there’s a simplicity to the storytelling, but it’s really driven by the wonderful chemistry between the two leads.  It’s kind of amazing how enjoyable this movie is considering the inexperience of both actors, and I hope this gets seen by more people.  This is a wonderful discovery film that I was told played at the Lighthouse International Film Festival in Jersey and the Phoenix Film Festival, just a reminder why film festivals are so important!
Tumblr media
Also on VOD and Digital this Friday is Annie Silverstein’s BULL (Samuel Goldwyn), starring Rob Morgan from Mudbound, Just Mercy and Netflix’s Daredevil. Amber Havard plays 14-year-old Kristal, a young troubled girl who is on her way to ending up in jail like her mother. After an incident where Kristal is in danger of going to juvie, she’s given a choice instead to help her next door neighbor, Morgan’s bull rider Abe Turner, with errands around his home. Kris soon discovers her own love for bull riding, as this unlikely relationship grows. I’m a big fan of Rob Morgan as an actor, because his work is highly-underrated, and I do have to say that Bull is a great vehicle for Morgan to have more of a leading role than he normally gets. He shines in that capacity, and Havard does a decent job in their scenes together, even though it’s a far lower key role. Then again, I thought this was a moderately decent indie that covered topics very similar to other movies, including Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s The Mustang last year and Chloé Zhao’s The Rider a year earlier.  Unfortunately, the material and especially Silverstein’s writing isn’t up to par with those movies, and it took me a little longer to get into this vs. those other films. Oddly, this will probably be seen by more people due to its VOD release, and that’s fine since I’d love movies like this to find more of an audience even with its pacing issues.
Tumblr media
Back in the VOD/digital world, we have a handful of new releases including Quentin (Rubber) Dupieux’s DEERSKIN (“Le Daim”) (Greenwich), which I got a chance to see at Rendezvous with French Cinema back in February before the world came to a screeching halt, and that series ended up also being sidelined. The movie stars Oscar winner Jean Dujardin from The Artist whose obsession with a designer deerskin jacket leads him into a life of crime as he tries to complete his all-deerskin wardrobe. I generally like Dupieux’s weird sense of humor, and though this is less of a genre film than Rubber, it’s an entertaining film as we watch Dujardin’s character get further and further into trouble as he becomes obsessed with making a movie… as well as abolishing the world of all other jackets besides his own. If that sounds weird like a strange premise, then you clearly don’t know Dupieux’s work, and maybe it’s not for you. Deerskin is a movie I fully appreciated, because it was so weird and you never know where it was going, even going into the realm of American Psycho as it went along. Dujardin’s expressive performance was quite fun to watch, plus it it also co-stars Adèle Haenel from Portrait of a Lady on Fire, for those who loved that movie. Again, not for everyone, but if you enjoy Dupieux’s strange filmmaking ethos then Deerskin is another highly original offering.
Film at Lincoln Center’s Virtual Cinema will also be playing Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra’s new film Liberté (Cinema Guild), following it being a selection at the 57th New York Film Festival last year. This one takes place in the 18th century where a group of “bewigged libertines” engage in “pansexual games of pain, torture, humiliation and other dissolute, Sadean pleasure.” Sounds like something that would never play in Middle America if not for being available across the country thanks to this Virtual Cinema. I can’t remember if I saw Serra’s other film, The Death of Louis XIV, but this doesn’t sound like something I would watch unless I had free time at a festival, and clearly, I didn’t have time for this one at least year’s NYFF.
Another foreign film to look out for via virtual cinema is César Diaz’s Belgian-Guatemalan film, Our Mothers (Nuestras Madres) (Outside Pictures), which will be available via Virtual Cinema Friday. Besides being the Belgian entry for the 92nd Academy Awards, it also won the Caméra d’Or at last year’s Cannes, where it premiered during Cannes International Critics Week. It stars Armando Espitia as young anthropologist Ernesto who works for the Forensic Foundation in Guatemala as the country is in the middle of trying the soldiers who began the country’s civil war. Ernesto’s job is to identify the bodies of the missing, including possibly his father whose went missing during the war. The project began as a documentary and then became a narrative film.
Semi-related to the above, Cinema Tropical will be releasing three new genre-breaking films from a new generation of Brazilian directors, the “Cinema Tropical Collection” also done in conjunction with Lincoln Center, beginning with Gabriel Martins and Maurílio’s In the Heart of the World on Thursday, April 30.
Another movie getting a “Virtual Cinema” release (i.e. VOD/Digital) is Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra’s “docu-thriller” THE INFILTRATORS (Oscilloscope), which tells the true story of two immigrants who are thrown into a detention center. Marco and Viri are members of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, a group of young DREAMers who want to put a stop to unjust deportations by being put in detention themselves, a plan that doesn’t go the way they planned. The film cuts between documentary footage of the real “infiltrators” with reenactments of the events inside the detention story, so it’s part documentary and part drama.
Also, Kino Lorber will be releasing Beanpole director Kantemir Balagov’s 2017 debut film, Tesnota (Closeness), virtually on Friday to help assist New York arthouse, Anthology Film Archives. This one is set in 1998 Nalchik in the North Caucasus of Russia and focuses on 24-year-old Jewish girl Ilana who works in her father’s garage, and while celebrating her young brother David’s engagement, he and his fiancée are kidnapped, but the Jewish community won’t go to the police to pay the ransom, so Ilana and her parents have to figure out a way to save them on their own.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Lots of stuff on Netflix this week, including THE HALF OF IT, the new film from Alice Wu, her first movie as as director since her terrific 2004 debut, Saving Face! This one stars Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu, a cash-strapped teen who writes a love to the school’s jock but ends up becoming friends with him and falling for the girl he has a crush on. I haven’t watched it yet to review, but I’m looking forward to it being a nice twist on Netflix’s other teen-oriented romance films.
Ryan Murphy’s second series for Netflix, Hollywood, will debut its first season on Friday, this one co-created with Ian Brennan (Glee, Scream Queens). It takes place in a post-WWII Hollywood and tells the story of a group of actors and filmmakers trying to make it. The cast includes Darren Criss, Patti Lupone, Mira Sorvino, Rob Reiner, Samara Weaving AND Michelle Krusiec, who starred in Alice Wu’s Saving Face! (See how it’s all connecting together?)
Chris Bolan’s documentary A Secret Love, which premieres on Netflix Wednesday, about two women, Pat Henschel and pro baseball player Terry Donahue, who fell in love in 1947 but had to keep that love a secret for 65 years due to the prejudice against lesbians they would have had to face.
Starting on Amazon this Friday is Upload, the new series from Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation), with the first season being made up of ten episodes.  It stars Robbie Amell, who I got to interview last year for a small indie sci-fi film called Code 8. This is another dealing with life, death and the afterlife which seems to be a running theme through many series in recent years (such as Miracle Workers and The Good Place). In this one, Amell plays Nathan, a spoiled rich guy who ends up at Upload after a horrifying accident that takes his place, while Andy Allo plays the Upload “angel” assigned to Nathan who has to get him acclimated to his new afterlife. I’ve only watched the first episode of this so far, and it’s okay. I’m curious to see where it goes since it’s not a straight comedy perse like some of Daniels’ other work, and a lot is put on Amell’s shoulders to be funny, and Daniels is working with a lot of lesser-known actors for this one.
On Sunday, Showtime will launch the season debuts of Billions (Season 5) and the first season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
Also, Lionsgate’s free movie offering this Friday is Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, my #1 movie of that year… thanks for nothing, #Schmoonlight!
Next week, more movies and shows not in theaters!
By the way, if you read this week’s column and have bothered to read this far down, feel free to drop me some thoughts at Edward dot Douglas at Gmail dot Com or drop me a note or tweet on Twitter. I love hearing from readers … honest!

Deranged: Hope
Tumblr media
Deranged Mini-Masterlist
Characters: Kai, Lay, and Suho
Warnings: Some vulgar language, mentions of many forms of abuse, suicide, mental health issues, etc.
Word Count: 4.4k
“Now we will take a look at Yin and Yang, the hopeful and the hopeless. Yin is the dark part of the swirl and Yang is the light part. You can see a dot of light in the dark and a dot of dark in the light, this can give us a better understanding of what this symbol means. In all Yin there is Yang and in all Yang there is Yin. Nothing in the universe is completely Yin or completely Yang. The symbol represents the belief that the universe has two forces that are opposing in nature but also complimentary. Examples of these are; life and death, health and sickness, positive and negative, and for our purposes hope and hopelessness.
Those that are hopeful have the ability to become hopeless, and those that are hopeless have the ability to become hopeful. Now, why are we discussing this? It is very important that you remember that, no matter what, at any time a force such as this can change to its opposing side. It’s something you need to be prepared for. Just because someone seems hopeful doesn’t mean you should let your guard down and just because someone seems hopeless doesn’t mean you should give up.”
“I’m very appreciative of Kai. As messed up as it sounds, I envy Kai as well. Kai is so full of hope that he can and will make me stronger. He’s so dedicated and determined, I see those qualities in him and I wish I had them myself.”
Kim Jongin - Alias is Kai. Persecutor alter. Age 23. Took over Suho on the night of admission and slit his wrists. When asked the reasoning behind his actions, he merely replied, “The more I hurt him, the stronger he will be and the less likely he is to be hurt.”
“Kai, you have been unusually quiet today. Not to sound rude or anything, but why exactly are you here? You came in this morning and sat on the couch and have yet to speak a word to me.” Kai always wanted to get straight to the point, he didn’t beat around the bush or stall in the least. However, after he walked into my office and sat in silence for three hours, I knew something wasn’t right about him.
“Doc, will you be honest with me if I ask you a question?”
“What is the question?”
“Do you think I’m hurting Suho?”
I don’t know, do I think you’re hurting him? Kai has inflicted physical pain upon Suho multiple times. The most serious case being the night Kai slit his wrists. When I first met Kai, he truly believed that the only way to help Suho was to hurt him physically. He said he ‘wanted to make Suho stronger’ as he put it. The thing is, though, Suho doesn’t remember a lot of the things Kai does to him. The last physical incident, Kai had scratched Suho’s arms and Suho didn’t know how the scratches got there. He knew some of what Kai did to him, he knew very well that Kai physically hurt him, but he didn’t know how often.
“I’ve been thinking about what you said the last time we spoke. I’ve thought about the past few months, and I’ve realized that when I’ve hurt him it didn’t have any influence on him like it used to. If fact, I think he has improved more since I haven’t done anything to him. I don’t know what is wrong with me, why do I feel this overwhelming need to hurt him to try and make him stronger? Did I ever really protect him?” He looked up at me and at that moment he didn’t look like Kai, I’m not sure who he looked like. “I’ve been trying to keep my anger under control lately. I’ve taken your advice and I’ve been dancing a lot more lately to help me keep calm.”
Am I hearing this right? Kai is trying to change?
“Kai, where is this coming from? Is this all from what I said?” Kai didn’t go too far into detail about what made him want to change. As far as I could tell, my words had finally gotten to him and he rethought his approach to helping make Suho stronger. As terrible of a person as it makes me seem, I did think that Kai’s behavior helped Suho become stronger to an extent, but it was short lived help. Now, if it continued, it would probably do the exact opposite and make him weaker.
“Also, Doc, I’d like to thank you for all you do for us—especially Suho. You have made him stronger, stronger than I have made him more than likely. Please don’t let my actions towards you affect how you feel about him, my actions are not a reflection of who he is as a person.” I truly did not recognize this side of Kai. Him saying something so… Heartfelt, it was strange to me. He looked and sounded so hopeless at that moment, and I didn’t know how to help him. I never had to help him with feeling like that before, so I didn’t know what to say that could help him feel better. He left my office that day in a gloom. I failed at doing my job that day, I failed Kai by not being able to help him get back up on his feet. I let him down, and I knew I would do whatever it took to make it up.
I mentioned in my last note that I had made a potential breakthrough with Kai, and today he confirmed that before my very eyes. I honestly do think that he will no longer be inflicting pain upon Suho, a truly remarkable moment. There is one question I have about this, though.
If Kai no longer takes on the role as the persecutor, will he become a different alter or disappear completely?
He also said something to me that I think relates to Suho’s true feelings towards me. He said, “Please don’t let my actions towards you affect how you feel about him, my actions are not a reflection of who he is as a person.” Could this be because of what D.O. mentioned to him? About him ruining any prospects of a relationship with me? Does D.O. have this much control over Kai? Could D.O. be responsible for Kai’s drastic change?
I’m not quite sure what side of Kai I made contact with today. The Kai I knew always had so much hope for Suho to be stronger and better, and he had hope that he would be able to help Suho with that. However, today, he looked the opposite. He looked completely defeated and I didn’t know what to say. I’m hoping our next meeting will be soon so I can try and better understand this side of him.
“Just because someone seems hopeful doesn’t mean you should let your guard down.”
While trying to unscramble the puzzle that these three allegedly dead alters had become, I found myself frantically trying to piece together another puzzle. These three new alters; Chen, Lay, and Xiumin. They were a collection of puzzle pieces that had been dumped on the table just when I thought I had almost finished piecing together the puzzle that is Suho’s system.
I had the feeling that, to fully uncover the mystery of these other three alters, I would need to learn about the new three. I glanced down at the folder on my desk, Chen’s section being the last section I touched.
One down, two to go.
Xiumin told me that he wouldn’t show up often, so I made Lay my next target. I remembered D.O. mentioning how he kept Lay suppressed, so the next time I saw D.O. I asked him to stop trying to suppress him. He berated me for asking him such a question, claiming that Lay was a threat to Suho’s safety and that he couldn’t do something that would put Suho in harm’s way. I spent thirty minutes alone convincing him that he needed to do this for Suho’s safety.
Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait long for Lay to show up. I actually found him outside of my office early one morning. He had his feet pulled to his chest and his head between his knees. He looked up at me, tears and distress in his eyes. I coaxed him into my office, but I could tell he wasn’t comfortable in the least.
“I-I thought about coming in, but I didn’t want to b-bother you. I know you wouldn’t want to see me, but… I don’t know…” How is it that Lay assumes so much about my personal feelings towards him when we have only met once? Wait, of course, that’s a reflection on how he views his self-worth.
“Lay, sweetheart, that’s not right. Why would I not want to see you? I told you the last time we met, I would love to get to know you. Don’t you remember that?” He looked up at me with a doe-eyed look. “You really meant that?”
“Of course I did. I won’t lie to you, I promise you that. You will get only the truth from me.” He told me lots of his personal feelings, most of which were degrading to himself. It seemed like he couldn’t find something about himself that he loved, he only saw himself as bad. When he got on the topic of suicide, I couldn’t sit and only listen to him any longer.
“Do you have any harmful objects on you?”
“N-no.”
He’s lying.
“Lay, please don’t lie to me. I will ask again, do you have any harmful objects on you?” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a nail file. I took it from his palms and put it in one of my desk drawers, “I will keep this here, okay? I don’t want you hurting yourself,” I went back to my chair and sat down, “How about at home? The harmful things at home, do you think you can hide them from yourself?”
No response.
“Okay, let me ask you a different question. Which of the others do you trust the most? Besides Xiumin.”
“Other than Xiumin? I... was very close to Luhan, Tao, and Kris. Tao especially, though.” Hearing the last two names made my ears perk up.
Maybe Lay is the key to the other two?
“Tao, you say? Where is Tao now?” He shifted in his seat, crossing his ankles, “Lay?”
“D.O. said it’s best not to say,” He whispered, “I can’t talk about him anymore, that was a rule.”
“A rule? What do you mean a rule?”
A rule? A rule that he can’t talk about Tao anymore? Why would D.O. tell him it’s best not to say where Tao is? Why does this seem so similar to the situation with Baekhyun and Luhan? What’s the connection here?
“Well, can you write about him instead? You technically won’t be talking about him. Please, write down whatever is it that you want to write about him.” I slid a pad of paper and a pen across the table in front of him. He hesitated before taking the pen in his hand and writing something down on the paper. I waited patiently for him to finish, which took nearly forty-five minutes. Once he finished, I took it from him and went to put it on my desk for later use. While sitting it down, I noticed the last thing he had written down.
“Tao was the one who especially made me feel like I had a purpose. He made me feel important, he made me feel like I had a reason. Even if I didn’t believe it, I did for the moment. I miss him, I miss him so much. Now that he’s gone, I have nothing to live for. Yeah, Xiumin helps to an extent, but Tao and I had a connection that Xiumin and I will never have. What’s the point in prolonging the inevitable? I’ll die one day, why not that day come sooner rather than later?”
I would never forgive myself if something happened to Lay. Especially because if something happens to him, it happens to all of them. I’m not sure this will even help him, though… He cares about everyone else, he deeply cares about them far more than he cares about himself. Maybe he needs to know.
In that moment I made a make or break decision in hopes I could get through to Lay. “Lay, do you know what a system is?” He answered no, “How about alters?” He answered no again, “Well, first let me explain to you something called Dissociative Identity Disorder. It’s a disorder characterized by the presence of more than one identity or ‘person’ in one human body. These other identities or people are called alters. Alters can take on many forms and roles, they are a part of what we call a system which is all of the alters that are in that particular person’s body. These alters can have different names, ages, ethnicities, genders, personalities, so on and so forth. Essentially, they can be another person simply living in someone else’s body. Do you understand?”
“Why are you telling me this, Miss?”
“Well, Lay, I’m not quite sure how to tell you this so I will just say it. You are an alter. You are a separate identity in Suho’s physical body. You all are, all but Suho. I don’t use this phrase, but he is what we call the host. I will answer whatever questions you have, and if you will allow me to I would like to record this session.” I wanted to record our conversation so that I could go back over it later on and listen to see if I missed anything during the sessions. I hadn’t recorded a session since one of my first few encounters with D.O. but now seemed more appropriate than those times.
“How is it that I didn’t know about this?”
“I’m afraid I can’t answer that question, Lay. It isn’t uncommon for alters to be unaware that they are in the host’s body, so you shouldn’t worry too much about it.”
“How many alters are usually in a system?”
“During treatment, I believe anywhere up to 15 alters on average.”
“What did you mean by alters taking on many forms and roles?”
“Alters usually are developed from childhood trauma. Alters have different reasons they were created and memories different than others. For example, Baekhyun, he is what we call a child alter or a little. He is the innocent part of Suho, the child that Suho wishes he could have been. Baekhyun only remembers positive events from Suho’s childhood.”
“Have you met all of us?”
“No, I have yet to meet three of you. You, Chen, and Xiumin are new to me as well, you three appeared last month.”
“Why?”
“Something must have triggered you three to come out. Alters can do this during treatment quite often, it’s as if you all were hiding and now felt like coming out. Rather that be because you felt as if you could come out or because something triggered you.”
“Why do you think we came out?”
“I think something triggered all of you.”
“Like what?”
“Well, this is merely a hunch of mine and I’m not sure if it’s true at all, but I think communicating with certain alters caused it.”
“What do you mean?”
“The best way I can explain this is to give an example—Baekhyun and Chen. They seem to not have much in common, correct? All of the times I have met with Chen have been following meetings with Baekhyun, so it seemed that something about Baekhyun triggered Chen. After I had a long session with Chen I think I found the connection. Baekhyun, as I told you, is a child alter. He’s the innocent part of Suho, he represents innocence. Chen, on the other hand, represents the opposite of that. He’s what we call a sexual alter, created for the purpose of handling the sexual abuse Suho went through as a child. Being the product of childhood sexual abuse, he represents the corruption of innocence. He is the opposite of Baekhyun.”
“Is that why Chen is how he is?”
“Yes, correct.”
“What alter am I?”
“Um… You, Lay, you are known as a suicide alter.”
“Oh… So, I have a purpose as well?”
“Yes, you do. All alters have a purpose, you are here for a reason. You are an important part of Suho and his system.”
“Really? That’s… That’s nice to know. That I have a purpose and am important to him. Wow… Tao was right.”
“Before appearing, D.O. had been suppressing you for quite some time. As to why he did that, my best guess is that, given your nature, if you weren’t in control of Suho then there would be no risk of suicide. However, you did manage to slip past him and he could no longer suppress you. I personally think the reasoning behind that is that someone triggered you to come out, so you did just that.”
“Who do you think triggered me?”
Who do I think triggered Lay? After today’s session, and after him finding out his true identity, he didn’t seem so hopeless. He seemed hopeful, the fact that he knew he had a purpose and is important changed him in that moment. He didn’t look so broken, in fact, he looked the opposite.
“You’re putting me on the spot here, sweetheart.”
After putting two and two together, it made perfect sense. I may be onto something with the connection between Baekhyun and Chen, maybe these alters are triggered by the other alters. Baekhyun triggers Chen, and now I do believe I know who triggers Lay.
“If I had to guess, though…”
While in school for my Ph.D., I remember a seminar one of my professors had. He said something in particular that I think is very much relevant to this topic. He said, “Allow me to reiterate what we discussed today. Yin and Yang; darkness and the light, sickness and health, death and life, the hopeful and the hopeless. One cannot exist without the other, they coexist and are a very important part that makes up this universe.”
“If Baekhyun who represents innocence triggers Chen who represents the corruption of innocence…”
It makes perfect sense now.
“And you represent the hopeless…”
Lay represents the hopeless, and the opposing to that would represent the hopeful.
“And who represents the hopeful is...”
That’s it.
“Kai.”
Kai, the hopeful. He has always been hopeful in his influence in Suho, he truly believes that Suho can and will be strong enough to where he can no longer be hurt. Kai doubting himself must have triggered Lay, his doubts about his usefulness to Suho and the future of them all. The hopeful turned hopeless, and the hopeless came through.
They are both destructive in nature, but their natures are driven by two separate and opposing forces—hope and hopelessness. That’s the connection.
After listening back over to Lay’s session, I noticed something that slipped past me. When Lay said that he did have a purpose, he said something that makes me wonder.
“Tao was right.”
Tao, the second of the three unknowns.
What is it exactly that Tao told Lay? That he had a purpose?
I had my notes sprawled out over my desk, trying to connect the pieces to this puzzle so far.
“Okay, Baekhyun represents innocence, I have that. Chen represents the corruption of innocence, those two are connected.” I had drawn a chart so I could have a better visual of how they were all connected. “Now, Kai and Lay. They are the hopeful and the hopeless, they are connected,” I drew the line connecting them together. “Luhan is Baekhyun’s ‘older brother’, so those two are connected,” I added Luhan’s name and drew a line from Baekhyun’s name to his. “Tao. Tao and Lay are connected,” Then Lay’s name to Tao’s.
“Luhan and Tao, what do they have in common?” I pondered on that question for a moment, “D.O.” I then added D.O. to the chart and connected Luhan and Tao’s lines to D.O.
Now, for the rest of them. From there, I started connecting the names that I knew were connected; Baekhyun and Chanyeol, D.O. and Kai, and Xiumin and Lay. I stepped back for a moment to look at the chart. One name connected the different groups together—D.O.
D.O. where do you fit in this puzzle? It’s too early to say that you are the overlapping piece, but I have a funny feeling about this.
“(Y/N)?” Suho’s bright face poked in my office. I motioned for him to come in, still immersed in the papers all over my desk. He took a glance at all of the papers I had on my desk and gasped, “(Y/N), is this what I think it is?”
I took my glasses off and dropped down into my chair. My body was drained of energy at this point, “Depends, what do you think it is?”
“Is this all about my system?” I nodded, “(Y/N)! Look at how much stuff is here. You shouldn’t be spending so much time over my case, you look exhausted! When was the last time you had a normal amount of sleep?” He touched his hand to my face, I placed my hand over it and smiled at him.
“Suho, this is my job. I’m doing this for you. It may be unprofessional of me to say this, but I’m willing to do whatever it takes so I can solve this for you. I care about you and I’m going to help you figure this out, I promise.” A blush came to his cheeks, then he turned his head away from me and to the papers on my desk. In particular, the chart I had drawn out with the names on it.
“What’s this?” His question pulled me back to reality. I put my glasses back on and moved my chair closer to my desk. “This is a list of your alters, I’m trying to figure out their connections. This is an unfinished list, though, so it will take some time before I have it all finished.”
He studied the list, subconsciously nodding his head as he seen whose names were connected. With hooded eyes, I watched as he took one of the pens from my desk and started writing on it. When he finished, he showed it to me. He had connected Chanyeol and D.O. “Chanyeol and D.O. were the first to show up in my system or at least the first ones I knew of. If I understand the meaning of this correctly, they are connected as well.”
“How about Kris? Why are Lay, Tao, and Luhan connected to him?” He had also added Kris, connecting those three names to his.
“Those four? They were all very close with one another. They are all Chinese as well, but that may not have anything to do with how close they were.” I took the sheet of paper from his hands and took a better look at it. I grabbed another sheet of paper to make a more neat chart and started. I put Baekhyun and Kai on one side, then Chen and Lay on the other and connected them. Then I started connecting the next part; Luhan and Chanyeol to Baekhyun and Tao and Xiumin to Lay.
I had Baekhyun, Kai, Chanyeol, and Luhan on one side then Chen, Lay, Xiumin, and Tao on the other. Finally, I added D.O. and Kris’ names in the middle. They were the two that connected these two lists. They had connections on both sides.
What does this mean? Does Kris have something to do with this as well? Also, where does Sehun fit in all of this? Why is he not on this list? Aish, I need to talk to Sehun as soon as possible to figure out where he stands with this.
“(Y/N)? What’s going on?” I looked at Suho and turned the paper over, “Oh, I was just making the list easier for me to read. There’s nothing wrong, I promise.” In reality, I didn’t want Suho to see that D.O. and Kris connected the two lists I had made.
D.O. knows and sees everything, even when not in control. Hopefully he wasn’t paying close attention when Suho first looked at the list. Whatever these connections mean, I don’t want him knowing that I am getting closer to finding this out. I need to keep all of them away from this information just in case.
I put that aside to tend to Suho. He didn’t have much to say, mainly small talk and just random chit chat. He didn’t stay for long, which both saddened and relieved me. Saddened, because I hadn’t had much time with him in what seemed like forever, and relieved because I could finally finish up my work for the day and go home.
This could be a long shot, and I’m not even quite sure what these connections mean. I do think that these connections play an important role, though. I still need to find out what role Sehun has in this, so I will have to add him in later.
What started out as trying to understand and learn about Kris, Tao, and Luhan has now turned into a bigger puzzle than I originally thought. I know D.O. has something to do with this. He plays some major role in this, and I am afraid that Kris does as well. D.O. worries me the most, thought. It’s been proven that he has lied to me, about how many things now I’m not even sure. The only reason he has to lie to me is to cover something up, something he doesn’t want me to know. What that something is, I’ll have to find out. I just hope that whatever motives he has are not nefarious.

❤: who is more affectionate in public? in private?
I think Apollo is the most affectionate in public. This might be surprising because Klavier seems like such a flirt before they got together but it’s because Klavier likes to keep his private life separate from his life as a rockstar and prosecutor.
♡: who is the bigger romantic openly? secretly?
I think they’re both pretty blushy before the relationship and in the beginning of it. While Klavier is really flirty, I feel like that’s how people expect him to act and also how he’s supposed to act for his rockstar career, though. In real life, Klavier Gavin is much shier, more anxious, and kind of nerdy~
wait- okay so the point that I was attempting to make was… uhhh… klavier and apollo both are anxious messes….. does that even relate??????
❥: who is more likely to plan something big for valentine’s day?
Apollo. If Klavier does, Polly’ll see that he’s trying to hide something from him. So Apollo plans surprise stuff every year~ Now, this doesn’t mean that Klavi doesn’t plan really romantic stuff, he just has to play it cool and not be secretive because Apollo will freak out.
ღ: who is more likely to initiate hand-holding in public?
Apollo doesn’t want to cause any trouble with Klavier and the press, so he tries to keep his hands to himself…. so, Klavier. the first time Klavi reached for Apollo’s hand, Apollo’s mind may have shut itself down heeheeheeee
💕: who is more likely to make huge declarations of love in front of other people?
Klavier. Definitely Klavier. Valentine’s days, the official “i-want-you-to-be-my-boyfriend” moment… and he most likely does it all with music. AND THE PROPOSAL CAN YOU IMAGINE I’M SO DEAD AHHHH
💘: who developed a crush on the other first?
Apollo. It was all a process. Apollo was infuriated with him at first because Trucy was so obsessed with him and how hot he is and how nice he is and how good he is in court and everything else…
but then those things make Klavier more attractive to Apollo. And after they got to know each other more and more, Apollo became absolutely fascinated with Klavier. And they got closer~
💝: who spends more time (possibly overthinking) what presents to get the other?
Apollo- he overthinks everything. Apollo’s always talking to Clay like “Klavier doesn’t really NEED anything for his birthday I mean whatever he needs he can get really easily for himself so whatever i get him won’t be very special at all so-” and so on and so forth.
although, over the years, Apollo has learned that spending time together is probably the best thing he can give Klavier~
💓: who initiates most physical contact?
Klavier because he’s pretty big on physical contact. and he looooves holding Apollo in his arms because Polly’s so smol~
💌: who is more likely to send cutesy texts to the other?
Klavier sends texts all day long- especial after SoJ kill me yes they stay together and they work it out and they end up happily ever after in Khura’in SHUT UP MOM
💟: who spends time reading their zodiac compatibilities?
Klavier but it isn’t like he actually believes a lot of it- or cares. He just does it for fun or when he’s bored~
💙: who is more protective?
I think that they’re both really protective of each other. Apollo becomes very protective of Klavier during the events of Turnabout Serenade to the aftermath of Turnabout Succession- and even during a bit of Turnabout Academy when Klavier’s teacher died and he was scheduled to play a song that he swore to never play again.
But, in that same light, Klavier begins to suspect that there is something very wrong with Apollo in Dual Destinies and worries very very much. The only difference between Klavier and everyone else at this point is that Apollo tells Klavier what’s wrong. He knew and met Clay.
Although, in SoJ, Apollo had tried to forget about Khura’in. And after Apollo begins to act strange again, Klavier has no foreknowledge. He only learns about all of it after the fact because everything in SoJ moved so quickly…
Klavier eventually finds out everything, though.
and I could go on and on and on this discussion, but i’m trying to mind the spoilers ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
💚: who tends to get sick more often? who is better at taking care of the other?
Apollo. and Klavier is a really, really good caretaker. Imagine Apollo getting sick and, since he’s a workaholic, he has to be convinced to stop. Klavier takes off work for a week, schedules with Phoenix to have Apollo taking off work for a week, and nursing him back to health
Which involves Klavier making loads of homemade soups and them sitting on the couch watching movies; Apollo being wrapped up in a blanket~
💜: who said “i love you” first? or, if neither has said it yet, who is more likely to say it first?
Apollo said it first. I’ve always thought that Apollo said it first. Despite a lot of brilliant fics that show Klavier saying it first, I just- I do not see that happening. I imagine a very nervous and scared-to-death confession.
Or maybe I’m just thinking of Ace Wizards??? and Coffee Shop??? and all my AUs??? asdfghjkl
💛: who believes in soulmates?
I think they both do. I mean, Apollo grew up in a household with Dhurke Sadmadhi, who is very heavily religious. Apollo grew up hearing about ‘Soul Mates’ and stuf~
In turn, though, Klavier grew up with Kristoph- a very cold person. I’m sure Kristoph had a couple of relationship in college or something but they probably never lasted and also, Klavier was in Europe at that time….
I think Klavier had always thirsted for love, though. In my head cannons, his parents died or were absent from a very young ago Kris was always so distant… I feel like Klavier had always been thirsting for someone to really love him like he deserves because he’s such a loving person.

Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
What is the web-o-sphere angry about this week? The conscious coupling of a comedian and pop princess, a Harry Potter casting choice and a Kardashian sister who could be working undercover for the dairy industry Here’s everything you need to know.
Pete Davidson says some weird things about Ariana Grande
THE STORY: During a radio interview with Howard Stern, SNL cast-member Pete Davidson made a series of comments and jokes about his fiancé, Ariana Grande, that have people asking questions. For starters, he said he’s “never been prouder” than when he watched former U.S. President Bill Clinton seemingly “eyeing” Grande at Aretha Franklin’s funeral last month. And, later in the interview when asked about how he deals with his fiancé being objectified by men on the regular, he said: “I get it. I was jerking off to her before I met her! I’ve been in the other shoes. Who knew I was practicing this whole time [for our relationship.]?”
And wait! That’s not all. In another interview sound bit that the media quickly picked up on, Davidson appears to express sympathy Bishop Charles E. Ellis III, who was accused of inappropriately touching Grande during a live television broadcast. “Shitty situation…” he said, “I feel bad for that guy.”
THE REACTION:
fuck pete davidson ariana deserves so much better pic.twitter.com/fbpLiaD7Jk
— cait (@kissyIipa) September 27, 2018
pete davidson is publicly encouraging toxic male behaviour towards his own fiancé, you should not defend any man who inappropriately touches anyone and it’s certainly not a compliment to be “eyed up” there’s something seriously wrong with him
— t (@louvinglyharry) September 27, 2018
Pete Davidson is DISGUSTING. Don’t try to tell me otherwise. I don’t care if he “makes ariana happy”, he treats her with no respect publicly and I don’t see him ever complimenting her for anything but her “sexiness” :( (Don’t even try to comment and attack me, it wont work)
— mark 💧 (@remcamiIa) September 27, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Man, Ariana Grande has had a rough year. Shortly after Davidson’s interview went viral, Grande tweeted a string of emotional messages, including: “can i pls have one okay day. just one. pls.” and “ty for loving me sm i do not deserve it.”
Is she addressing her fan’s Davidson backlash? We don’t know—and it’s probably not our business. What we do know is that Davidson is a brutally honest dude whose made a career out making uncomfortable, often-inappropriate jokes. I think Grande probably knew that before accepting his proposal. We also know that a lot these quotes were taken pretty out of context. For example, here’s everything Davidson said about the whole bishop situation: “It’s not cool and I feel really bad. We both don’t think that was intentional. He’s a really tall guy, she’s very little. He was trying to be funny. He did a stupid joke, he’s a pastor. He did a shitty joke, broadcast it on TV. Shitty situation…I feel bad for that guy.”
An Asian actress Claudia Kim plays Nagini in Fantastic Beasts
THE STORY: The final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald, the latest film from J.K Rowling’s extended Harry Potter universe, revealed that the character played by Claudia Kim is actually Nagini, a cursed woman who eventually transforms into Voldemort’s killer snake later in the Harry Potter series.
THE REACTION:
I feel like this is the problem when white people want to diversify and don't actually ask POC how to do so. They don't make the connection between making Nagini an Asian woman who later on is the pet of a white man. So I'm going to say it right now. That shit is racist.
— Ellen "Call Me General" Oh (@ElloEllenOh) September 25, 2018
issue isn't that nagini's a villain, but that she's barely a character at all. presumably enslaved, as humanoid pet & before as circus act, but w/no redemption arc as her death in DH is a fun victory for Good. & nagini is SE Asian iconography used as EAsian snake/dragon lady🙄
— ryen 🦇 (@RyeriLim) September 26, 2018
@jk_rowling listen Joanne, we get it, you didn't include enough representation when you wrote the books. But suddenly making Nagini into a Korean woman is garbage. Representation as an afterthought for more woke points is not good representation. https://t.co/UIrR7yiKQD
— Jen Moulton (@J_A_Moulton) September 26, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Since The Philosopher’s Stone, there problem with diversity and racial stereotyping in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. And in recent years, as the wizarding world continues to hold a powerful place in popular culture, it feels like the author has made attempts to rectify her lack of representation. (For example, a black actress was cast to play Hermione in the stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a decision that was both praised and criticized.)
It appears that this backtracked diversity is exactly what has been done with Nagini. The criticism that casting an Asian actress as a pet snake feeds into the fetishisation of East Asian women is valid. But on the flip side, writer Biba Kang points out that “had a Caucasian actor been cast in the role, you could imagine that journalists like me would be writing censorious pieces about white-washing and the cultural appropriation of Asian mythology.” She then points out the backlash against Tilda Swinton playing the Ancient One in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, despite the director’s argument that using an Asian actor would contribute to a racist stereotype.
Here’s what Rowling has to say about all of it: “The Naga are snake-like mythical creatures of Indonesian mythology, hence the name Nagini” and “Indonesia comprises a few hundred ethnic groups, including Javanese, Chinese and Betawi.” Is that a mic drop? Hard to say. I’m most interested in hearing from Claudia Kim, the actress who plays Nakini in the film, and who seems very excited about her role in the franchise.
There’s a Kylie Jenner cereal conspiracy
THE STORY: Kylie Jenner, Realizer of Things™, has come to a revelation. On September 18, 2018, Kylie Jenner tweeted: “last night i had cereal with milk for the first time. life changing.” At this point, the Internet pretty much lost it, and Jenner clarified: “i always liked my cereal dry i never bothered to put milk.” (Kris Jenner later confirmed this key information about her daughter to E! News, saying she’s to blame for Kylie’s strange habit: “It’s all my fault. Guilty as charged. I let the kid eat dry cereal and I think it just kind of stuck with her.”)
THE REACTION:
Kylie Jenner LIED to us! She has had cereal with Milk! pic.twitter.com/BM6R9v6zrp
— Natalia11 (@Natalia11) September 20, 2018
The dairy industry have clearly paid kylie to promote their products as more an more people are becoming aware how bad dairy actually is for you, the same with Kim when she took pictures drinking out the bottle 👀👀
— 💎charlea (@chardunbar_xx) September 23, 2018
Kylie Jenner is working for the milk industry and tweeted that shit last night cause milk stocks been going down since people been drinking dairy alternatives. STAY WOKE
— Titty Milk (@TYB_Johnny) September 20, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: She’s a liar AND she’s working undercover for the diary industry?! There’s a lot of garbage going on in the world right, and I really don’t think there’s anything wrong creating an unlikely celebrity conspiracy theory to distract from the madness. Oh, and Kylie, if you’re reading this, you owe us the truth!!!

For the week of 8 January 2018
Quick Bits:
Astonisher #4 gives us some nice quiet moments, as Magnus “convalesces” in a hospital filled with meteorite infected staff and patients, having been trapped there by his brother.
| Published by Lion Forge / Catalyst Prime

Avengers #675 kicks off the sixteen-part weekly “No Surrender” event, with Earth getting stolen off to somewhere, much of the planet’s superhero population being frozen in stasis (save for, it seems, the Avengers, and the X-Men members who pull double duty), and a lot of destruction occurring due to the shift. It’s a lot of moving parts, and like the just concluded “Worlds Collide” arc, it begins with the heroes randomly trying to save people with all of us left in the dark as to what’s going on, but it’s a decent start.
What is unquestionably great about this issue, though, is the artwork from Pepe Larraz. With David Curiel providing colours, the artwork on this book is just stunning. Larraz has really stepped up his game.

Barbarella #2 is full of more wonderful artwork by Kenan Yarar. His style reminds me a lot of Moritat and, when combined with the somewhat subdued colours from Mohan and rectangular word balloons from Crank!, gives the book a nice European feel. Mike Carey also introduces who’s probably going to be my favourite character, a nameless furry little Vix.

Bloodshot Salvation #5 brings a kind of closure to the present day arc involving Magic’s “Daddy”. Although not unexpected, it’s kind of abrupt and I’ve kind of got mixed feelings about it. I trust Jeff Lemire, though, that this is far from the end of this particular thread. Also, the “soon” arc manages to get even more insane.

Coyotes #3 gets stranger. Even as we get more beautiful art from Caitlin Yarsky and explanations as to what’s going on from Sean Lewis, the story takes a dramatic turn to the weird. It’s pretty glorious.

Dejah Thoris #0 is a nice tease for the new series from Amy Chu and Pasquale Qualano. The set up for finding a fabled lost city that was trying to preserve the old Mars is an interesting one.

The Despicable Deadpool #292 begins the next stage of Stryfe’s orders for Deadpool to kill people with the first part of “Bucket List”. The second kill is expedited fairly quickly, which is somewhat disappointing. I’m hoping that ultimately there’s something more to it that what we’ve seen.

Grass Kings #11 brings a kind of ending to the inquiry into Jen Handel’s death, but as it explains out Archie’s affair, it raises even more questions about what’s been going on in the Kingdom. Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, and Hilary Jenkins consistently seem to be outdoing themselves with each issue.

Judas #2 again is a stunning showcase for Jakub Rebelka’s artwork. As Jeff Loveness weaves through Satan’s stories of Biblical baddies to convince Judas of a flaw in God’s plan, Rebelka just continues to blow me away with his art.

Monstro Mechanica #2 gives us more action and intrigue even as Leonardo’s assistant, Isabel, works out some of the kinks of the titular monster. The humour that Paul Allor and Chris Evenhuis inject into the series is delightful.

Old Man Hawkeye #1 is the beginning of a prequel to the original Old Man Logan story arc. It’s a little light on plot explanations, heavy on atmosphere and brooding, with some very nice art by Marco Checchetto and Andres Mossa. Ethan Sacks has that sad sack, worn out, and put down Clint Barton characterization down pat.

Paradiso #2 reminds me of China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station in that Ram V and Devmalya Pramanik are managing to both push the boundaries of sci-fi and bring a city to life. In Paradiso’s case, this seems to be literal. I’m really loving the characters, the setting, and the art.

Pestilence #6 concludes what has been an excellent series by Frank Tieri and Oleg Okunev, reimagining the Black Death as a zombie apocalypse. The artwork from Okunev has been kinetic and visceral, perfectly befitting the action and horror of a medieval zombie outbreak, while Tieri has managed to inject a lot of humour into the characters and a real sense of camaraderie among the knights, even in the face of multiple betrayals. I’m definitely going to be looking forward to the second series, and highly recommend the first to any who’ve not tried this.

Royal City #9 has one of the best silent panels I’ve seen from Jeff Lemire, who has always been very good at conveying a lot in silent panels.

Runaways #5 gives us the secret of the cats, as Molly and Gert speculate on what’s going on with Molly’s grandmother. Kris Anka again nails some of the tiny details, like Molly’s alpaca stuffie and Old Lace eating out of a giant bowl alongside the cats.

Secret Warriors #12 is the end to a series that I was surprised, but thankful, wasn’t just a mini-series timed to coincide with the Secret Empire event. It’s been a team of Inhumans (and later Magik) who had no real business being a team in the first place, and the series has been funny, heartfelt, and rather offbeat. Such that it’s perfect that this issue is probably the closest they’ve come to being a real team as they fight over a Marvel-themed version of Risk. And neglect Magik, who was really only there for the cake.

Sleepless #2 grabbed me a little more than the first issue. The art from Leila Del Duca has been great throughout both issues, but in this issue Sarah Vaughn gives us a little bit more meat on the characters, the intrigue, and fleshing out some of the culture is very interesting.

Slots #4 showcases something that Dan Panosian has been great at building in this series, aside from the usual phenomenal art, and that’s character. This issue features the continued budding relationship between Mercy and Lucy, but while it’s doing that, it’s also building up more of Stan’s flawed but somewhat noble half-assed altruism and also further reinforcing that Les is an utter scumbag. Great work.

Spider-Man vs. Deadpool #26 is the beginning of a concurrent, intermittent side story, set in the “far flung” future with Peter and Wade stuck together in the same retirement home, similar to how Deadpool 2099 ran in the main Deadpool book. Robbie Thompson is still providing a nice humorous story playing up the continued animosity between the two characters, but what really stands out is the artwork from Scott Hepburn and Ian Herring.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #10 is the battle between Darth Vader and Jocasta Nu that you were hoping for, but I’m not sure it’s entirely what you’d expect. The action delivered by Giuseppe Camuncoli art is entertaining and Charles Soule throws a couple twists in the tale.

Sword of Ages #2 reminds me of the best of Walt Simonson and P. Craig Russell. Gabriel Rodríguez is doing something magical here with this mix of science fiction and fantasy, this issue making some of the parallels to Arthurian legend more explicit, even while branching out further into making this unique.

Taarna #1 was some unexpected Alex de Campi.

Witchblade #2 has me convinced that this series should be getting a lot more press than it is. This is a very mature reimagining of the series from Caitlin Kittredge, building slowly the characters and world of Alex Underwood’s life, as it feels like a taught mystery mixed with police procedural more than the offbeat horror-tinged superheroics of the original Witchblade. It’s very good.
Also, the artwork from Roberta Ingranata, with colours by Bryan Valenza, is wonderful. Ingranata’s page construction, panel composition, and establishing shots are just incredibly captivating, they go a long way into setting the tone and pacing for the story.
