CHB'23 #18: No Competition Post 2x06 Vampire Weekend

The party is dying down but he's enjoying himself with his friends, sitting with a few beers and trading stories.

"No, you had to be there," Ryan's giggling. "I'm chasing the head one way, Espo has the ass going the opposite way down the street."

"Except neither can see where they are running," Espo continues the story. "Fool misses the fire hydrant right in front of him. Goes down. Hard."

Castle is laughing, hearing the teams tales of woe of arrests of Halloween past, doesn't envy Lanie the task of determining fake or real blood.

"How about you, Castle?" Lanie says. "You must have had some wild Halloween parties."

Castle agrees. "None that I will mention with mother present," he teases the medical examiner.

"You haven't done Halloween until you've done Halloween with your theatre troupe," Martha insists. "Now, there is some commitment to the bit."

Castle groans but he watches his new friends, his partner turn rapt attention to the actress, knowing from experience that none of them had ever experienced anything the way Martha Rodger does.

"Go on then, Mrs R," Ryan encourages. "What's the weirdest Halloween experience you've had?"

"I was once doing a modern retelling of Much Ado About Nothing, you know, the Shakespeare play?" She checks everyone nods before she continues. "It was dreadful but we couldn't make the director see that his modern tweaks to the story just weren't working. Harriet, one of the actors, she insisted on trying to perform a séance and contact Shakespeare to rectify the situation and..."

She waited, watched them all get drawn in.

"Bam!" She clapped her hands, watched them jump. "Stage light blew out above us, Harriet was dreadfully frightened she'd summoned something that she quit the next day and we went back to the original."

Castle sat back, laughing at the looks on his friends faces. Martha Rodgers was definitely no competition when it came to tall tales.

Season 5 - the team knows about Castle and Beckett's relationship but they still keep it all on the DL, even outside of the precinct.

Poker night at the loft had been a great idea! After a long and exhausting case, the team had needed something to perk them up again - and what was better than drinking and laughing (and gambling) with friends?

Beckett excused herself from the table - she had folded early, anyway - and made her way to the kitchen to pick at the leftover pizza from dinner. She leant back against the island counter, watching as Castle, Lanie and Jenny mercilessly trash-talked one another.

The ringing of Castle's phone brought their teasing to a halt. He pulled the device from his pocket and studied the screen.

"Why is Gina calling me?" he asked no one in particular, frustrated by the interruption.

Beckett pushed off the counter. "Oh, didn't you have that dinner-"

"Shit!"

Rick threw his cards to the table and leapt from his chair, running off to his room.

"I'm on my way!" he said apologetically as he pressed the phone to his ear.

"I guess we're done then," Lanie said, chuckling.

"No, you guys keep going," Castle called to them as he emerged from his room wearing a blazer over the Metallica shirt he had chosen for his relaxing night in. He picked up his shoe, hopped as he forced his foot into it and then repeated the act for the next one. "I won't be long, I promise."

He grabbed his wallet and keys, then rushed out the door.

The quiet and calm that fell over the loft was short lived when, just seconds later, Castle burst through the door again.

He made a beeline for the kitchen, for Kate. He cupped her face, pulled her in for brief but affectionate kiss.

"Seriously, please stay," he pleaded quietly.

He waited until she nodded before rushing off... again.

Beckett remained still, staring at the closed door as her heart pounded in her chest. She dared to glance in her friends' direction but regretted it the moment she saw four sets of eyes staring back, four poorly-hidden smirks.

She sighed, shrugged in defeat. "Go on, then."

Their teasing aww's filled the room, brought a tinge of pink to her cheeks.

"That was adorable," Lanie added, a hint of pride in her tone.

Kate shook her head, made her way back to the table and collected the scattered cards. "I'll deal."

The Next Voyage

Post Season 7

He passes out cold drinks, checks if anyone needs sunscreen, if everyone is set. Everyone had been excited by the suggestion - a weekend up in the Hamptons and he'd unveiled this twist just last night. An afternoon out on the water, sun and sea and this little family.

"Stop being such a Dad," Ryan winks at him. "We're good. The tablets have kicked in, not feeling the motion sickness now."

He grins at his friend, watches the way he relaxes back with Jenny. Knows he wants to go swimming with Esposito but is taking the time to be kid-free and have some time with his wife. Castle looks up the boat to see Lanie and Kate lying out on towels, tanning with Alexis at their side with her head in a book and a straw in her mouth, sipping on ice tea. Notices Esposito chatting with their Captain. Never expected the quiet, sullen man to have so many questions. Is pretty sure he heard the detective ask if he could give the helm a spin.

"I don't want my first act as Captain to be busting you for attempted drowning," Kate teases.

"I gotta give it to you Writer Boy," Lanie calls out to him as he sits back, content to enjoy the company. "This is some kinda life. I could get used to this."

"Yeah Castle," Ryan agrees. "Kate should get promoted more often if this is the way we celebrate."

He hears Kate laugh. Loves that sound. Loves how at ease she is, now her path is a little clearer.

"You have to admit it though," Jenny pipes in. "This is kind of amazing. All of us here. I've never done anything like this. Thanks for including us. This is something we'll always remember doing."

"You guys are our family," Castle insists. "Things are gonna change, but this never will."

He sees Kate sit up, look around at them all. Slides a drink her way, basking in the smile she gives him.

"A toast," he clears his throat, waits for Esposito to step away and join them.

"To our new Captain," Espo declares.

"To getting away with everything she taught us," Ryan added.

"To smart asses that might end up shipwrecked," Kate cracked back.

"To all of us, here, now," Castle interrupts. "and the voyage."
