Spotify The Best Freemium App Everyone Should Own

Spotify is a freemium service that makes their revenue by showing ads from third parties to free users and selling premium streaming subscriptions (Gobry, 2011).

Spotify offers both paid subscription-based and free options for users; the major difference between Spotify and other music service providers. For example, Tidal, Apple music and Pandora is that the app is available across virtually all platforms such as PC, Mac, iOS, Android, TV’s and available on gaming devices, such as PlayStation, Xbox, Switch etc (Sisario, 2018).

With paid subscriptions, there are no ads or wait times to listen to a song, and you can download just about any song you can think of onto the device your using.

Spotify enables people to access their sweet tunes in both high-quality for those audiophiles out there (Strange Breed) or standard mp3 quality. Jokes the audio purists are already using Tidal for their high res tracks. Spotify’s fantastic download feature is great when there’s no Wi-Fi or god forbid no data coverage in your area.

For any mere mortals or Guardians of the Galaxy out there that have finally decided to get rid of their tape deck and don't want to fork out the extra cash. They have the ability to select the free option. They can enjoy listening to ads and using shuffle play for songs and albums, as there’s no option to select a particular record, song or playlist, oh yeah and no download option (Zhang, 2015).

Klangteppich dreilagig 

In manchen Bereichen bin ich ja Lateadopter und so probiere ich heute mal zum Joggen die iPhone-App Zombies, Run! aus, die es schon seit fünf Jahren gibt. Sie spielt einem per Headset Hörspielszenen einer postzombielapokalyptischen Welt ein, in denen man als Runner Aufträge im zombieverseuchten Gebiet erledigen muss. Wie schon der Titel suggeriert, soll einen das Nahen der Untoten gelegentlich zu kleinen Zwischenspurts animieren.

Anders als ein Hörbuch oder Podcast hat die Zombiegeschichte minutenlange Pausen und die App schlägt einem selbst vor, diese doch mit einer Musik-Playlist zu füllen. Die kann in der Zombie-App angelegt oder von einer anderen App abgespielt werden. Letzteres probiere ich kurz aus und stelle fest, dass Zombies, run! die Wiedergabe nicht pausiert, sondern leiser im Hintergrund weiterlaufen lässt. Damit fallen Hörbucher oder Podcasts für mich aus und ich wähle ohne groß nachzudenken ein Album der Queens of the Stone Age.

Um die Dinge weiter zu verkomplizieren starte ich auch noch Runkeeper für das Tracking meines Laufs. Diese App ist so eingestellt, dass sie mir alle fünf Minuten die aktuelle Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit ansagt, und sie ist in der Lage, andere Audiowiedergabe dafür zu pausieren.

Ich höre also jetzt Stoner Rock, überlagert von gelegentlichen Zombieattacken und beides wiederum regelmäßig von Zeitansagen unterbrochen. Diese Ausgangslage wird durch zwei Faktoren weiter verkompliziert: Erstens fällt unterwegs der linke Lautsprecher meines Headsets aus, zweitens ist das Musikalbum eines, dessen Stücke durch Klangcollagen verbunden sind, die das Sendersuchen an einem analogen Radio imitieren. Mir ist nicht immer auf Anhieb klar, ob ein Jingle oder ein Nachrichtenfetzen den Steinzeitköniginnen oder den Zombies zuzuordnen ist.

Natürlich könnte ich auch einfach kurz anhalten und diesen Mischmasch abstellen, aber ich bin eher amüsiert, laufe eine gute halbe Stunde durch – ich erreiche die befestigte Basis im Zombiegebiet, aber dann schließt das automatische Tor nicht! – und meine Geschwindigkeit ist auch gar nicht übel.
