leafpool should’ve been the fourth cat. it starts with her getitng told by starclan that squirrel and bramble were meant to be together. something they only did because they knew about her eventual kits with crowfeather.

it’s established that starclan uses her for their bidding. she’s even named after the place where starclan communes with them. so why wouldn’t they make her be the fourth? she is where it began so she must be the end.

she would essentially replace firestar’s whole role in po3 and oots. she is given the prophecy of the three instead of him. although she immediately understands why starclan told her the prophecy. so she could make them as strong as powerful. so instead she tries to play down their powers as much as possible, just wanting lion and jay to be normal kids.

but she’d know that holly wasn’t the third. she knows her daughter is not a dove. she is an owl. she is silent, and watching. waiting. for her moment. when it’s finally confirmed that holly is powerless her heart breaks for her and desperately wishes to comfort her but knows she cannot. 

she loathes starclan for what they’ve done to her. for what they stole from her. and now making her the fourth cat? why couldn’t they do that for holly? 

when she goes to starclan. be it through the moonpool or in her death she lets loose on them. there’s nothing she can do at that point but she doesn’t care. she’s infuriated at being a pawn in their game. she is alive. she has a family. how dare they treat her like a toy to be played with and thrown away when bored. 

she forsakes them and chooses to wander the world as a ghost, watching over the futrue generations. desperate to warm them about starclans ways and to not trust them under any circumstance. starclan cares for no one.

alderheart mouths off to a kittypet because he was being rude over him losing a toe. said kittypet jumps him for it, and sparkpelt rushes out to save him. you would think here that maybe alderheart has had some character development and maybe got the stick out of his ass and stops thinking that his sister breathes to spite him?

little side tangent, it’s quite interesting how sparkpelt was retconned into not wanting skyclan around and totally hating their guts and pushing for xenophobia and hatred when that 100% was not how she was in the first half of the arc. but alderheart’s own hatred for outsiders (in this case, kittypets) is consistent from book 1 to this very scene. and no one cares. because that’s “acceptable” xenophobia. its almost like the erins dont think xenophobia is all that bad actually and its kinda stupid to hone in on sparkpelt being twisted and bent into a strawman in this arc and act like shes the source of xenophobia when this whole damn series has a problem with xenophobia. sparkpelt’s xenophobia is only bad because it’s directed at the “wrong” group. and even then we’re supposed to gasp in horror with twigpaw as she gripes about how weird and bad skyclan is for the daylight warriors and leaders patrolling.

anyways back to alderheart’s tantrum. “we were so close!” oh, were you? this isnt new, youve been bitching about her being a selfish brat since book 1. you complain that she wouldnt understand your unique tortured soul, then you complain that she wants to help? and i guess the right thing to do would be letting you bite the dust. i honestly wish she did. itd be funny.

also the phone works both ways and she has a life. get a grip for fucks sake.

after this they admittedly have a nice moment where alderheart apologizes for being sensitive but it comes after spark is made to apologize for no good reason. so it hits weird. she reassures him about vague prophecy number 37384838. they have a nice chat about larksong.

and then because we need alderheart to have the ultimate w this chapter, a dog attacks sparkpelt and the medic with no training and no good fighting skills is able to epically save her life.

this would have been fine without this bullshit at the end to make alderheart win back his pride and get his sister back for emasculating him.

u know what, sure, i've got my issues with feathertail's characterisation in A Shadow In Riverclan (specifically in regards to how they wrote her relationship with sasha) but honestly big up to her for breaking free of the "shallow dead love interest" box she was sitting in fanon-wise before that. im glad that a lot of people's first impression of feathertail is now about her trauma her and trust issues from that book rather than just about crowfeather. not because female characters with romance centric arcs are worth less obviously, but because warrior cats has such a deficit of major female characters that are not heavily associated with romance and/or motherhood that knocking one halfway off the list is, to some extent, a tiny little victory

Sagewhisker continuing to shame Yellowfang for Brokenstar's birth, telling her that Russetfur's death is her fault for breaking the code and having kits years ago, and continually implying she's selfish and irresponsible is just... awful, awful behavior. Yellowfang got the damn message. She already knew what she did was wrong and felt terrible about it before she'd even given birth. She's spent years feeling terrible as she was forced to give up her son to an abusive queen, forced to stop trying to be his friend, forced to watch as he grew into a tyrant and destroyed her whole life, forced to kill him twice to protect ThunderClan.

How come nobody else in ShadowClan is given any of the blame for, I don't know, enabling the deputy's son, of all cats, to be mistreated by his adopted mother and littermates? Allowing him to grow up isolated and angry and hungry for power and respect? Ignoring all the red flags about his behavior and making him deputy???

Raggedstar should be even guiltier than Yellowfang, because he willingly remained in a relationship with a medicine cat, and then he was the one who handed power to Brokentail and did nothing to right the situation when he realized he'd made a huge mistake. But he doesn't spend his entire afterlife getting shamed for his actions. He just gets remembered as the poor foolish leader who got tricked and murdered by his son, while Yellowfang takes the fall every single time the topic comes up. It really feels like she's just become StarClan's punching bag. What also gets to me is how, y'know... Who was it who pressured Yellowfang into the medicine cat role — even though she desperately didn't want it — and thus made that birth illegal in the first place, SAGEWHISKER?

Anyway I was kinda "meh" about Sagewhisker before but the prologue of Night Whispers has put her straight into the garbage can for me.

#i still hold that the story of yellowfang and brokenstar is a fascinating one #because i see it as starclan knowing her son would be evil and trying to prevent his birth by making her a medicine cat #only for their meddling to end up causing the tragedy they were trying to avoid #classic greek tragedy type of stuff. it's fun #but boy is everyone so so so unfair to yellowfang #in a tragic story that fits very well but now? years after everyone involved has died? give it a rest #yellowfang and leafpool are treated so badly by starclan in ways that make me irrationally upset

This would definitely... Bloat some things, but I still want to do it cause then it involves all four clans like it Should, but man I love the idea of each clan having their own "Power of Three" trio. Like a lot. Originally I was going to make them all descendants of the current leaders and spread the litters throughout TNP, Po3, and OotS, but that didn't quite seem right to me. There aren't a ton of descendants for me to work with to this end (especially for Blackstar, who I've decided is Darktail's dad who never has another litter in the clans). Soooo instead, I want all of them to be forbidden kits. Half clan and medic children, baby. So obviously this includes the ThunderClan three, and the other litters I'm considering are Tawnypelt's kittens (moved to be born late in Po3) who would technically be ThunderShadow kits... that or I'm changing who the other parent is. (Here comes TawnyFeather with the steel chair...? They could meet again in Outcast... owo?) and Sedgewhisker and her sisters who are apparently WindRiver kits?? Which I didn't know was a thing til now.

That just leaves the RiverClan three who I'm not totally sure on. My friend Vio suggested Icewing's first litter, which I kinda like cause that includes Beetlewhisker. Makes his fate in the Dark Forest all the more terrifying. But I'm also considering Minnowtail and her siblings (reviving her brother Tumblekit). I do not remember if those guys have confirmed dads but if they do, uhhhhhhhh. Well they aren't their dads anymore. Officially halfclan now.

#to this end i may take a page from bonefalls book and make dove/ivy jayfeathers children instead of whiteash kids #cause like. i LIKE the drama of dove being ash's kid but i also think its interesting to go at the angle of her being jay's kit #for reference: jayfeather is forced to become a medic when leafpool gets demoted. this is VERY controversial in thunderclan #cause even tho jayfeather has a good amount of knowledge (he spent a lot of time in the healers den) he had very rushed training #cause the other leaders rallied and rallied for leafpool to get demoted and threatened attack if she wasn't #(I miiight make it so that bramblestar is leader at this point? so it makes more sense? cause he haaates leafpool. but also i want fire ali #alive so he can be spark and dandelion's dad right before he dies) #but some of the cats are arguing that it's very contrived and that now that holly is gone- they need leafpool more than ever #and dove and ivy are conceived around this time because jayfeather confides in poppyfrost for comfort #and ooooooooo guess who's just like his mama!! this would be the moment where like... In all their arguments, Nightcloud is the only one who ever gets physical with Crow. In the books, she rakes her claws against him a few times drawing blood. If I had been young Breeze and had seen that it'd be one of the things that would make me do my best to be and stay in my mother's good graces. Yeah, my dad may smack me but he never cuts me, never leaves me open for death by infection.
