Menyusuri jalan berbatu di Pano Lefkara, pusat lerajinan lace (lefkaritika, sulam tangan) dan juga kerajinan perak. Tapi walau di pusatnya, harga lace di sana juga aduhai. Pano Lefkara merupakan salah satu desa tujuan wisata di Cyprus yang berada di pegunungan, lebih kurang di ketinggial 500mdpl. Making some links with a photo from the Turkish Cypriot photography book and the folk art book:

The oval shape surrounded by flowers in the photograph, almost like a mirror, looks like the design on the bottom left with the garlands - and the roses in between the top two female figures - it all goes together somehow?!

I think this helps me to link my drawings of the faces of women within the Lefkaritika designs in another way - that relates to folk art 🎨

Learn about the lace embroidery of Cyprus in this short video.  Lefkara is very similar to Hardanger - pulled threads and needle lace.  The main difference is Hardanger deals with strictly square shapes, whereas with Lefkara you can do curves.  I am so incredibly excited because after waiting several years I finally got a book on Lefkara lace:  “ Lefkara Lace Embroidery: Historical Development” by Androula Hadjiyiasemi It is insanely rare and expensive.  I just about fainted when I saw it on amazon today for $30.  It has been anywhere from $300 to over $1,000 on amazon for years.  So it’s Christmas in May for me today :) Will be camped out by the mailbox until it comes.  :D

Passport / ID

Maybe this is on my mind and something that I’ve noticed a lot because I only just got my Cypriot passport & ID card, but the identity documents in the embroidery museums I’ve been to have been something that has stayed with me.

Im focusing in on the above drawing as the woman is holding up a document / booklet / passport which has the Lefkaritika ήλιος symbol on the cover. This came to me as I was drawing it, and I think it makes sense but I’m not sure why yet !

I know that for my artwork I want to try something different by creating minimal worlds this time but with only certain things in them that are very detailed, and well designed. Maybe there is a focus on faces? And they are enlarged? Maybe ID cards have surreal or different information on them? Maybe objects form the person’s ID? Different Lefkaritika patterns / designs could represent different parts of the world e.g. Μαργαρίτα Σκαλκώτα as stairs and the ήλιος design as the sun in this new world.

A Lefkaritika World?

I have also tried to develop combining my characters with the Lefkaritiko, and the 20 x drawings I did to help explore ideas. This is what I’ve come up with:

The image is from the book about Lefkaritika and I collaged over the top with photocopied drawings. I really like this effect of layering and feel like I’m a little closer to find a possible narrative for the imagery !

Trying out printmaking with a piece of Lefkaritiko I made recently. I really like the effect of how the ink picks up the different textures, especially that of the loose thread around the edges. Seeing all the creases and shadows (like when I photocopied the Lefkaritika) makes it feel even more tactile and I like this quality very much.
