"she's... glaring at me..." lgts spoiler talk
in the bad ends with ozzy, the girls each call out to the people important to them. freya calls for her dad. rozenmarine calls to her grandma. but who does leb have to call out to? granny gretel? no, no matter the vague answers or strange actions, it was always her she could trust the most. or so she thought. i wonder if in that moment, she might even cling to the only thing she's ever known: her faith. the same one hung heavy over her head, but maybe, just maybe, it's worth something now. anyways leb's bad end messes me up!

*huge spoilers for Little Goody Two Shoes + Pocket Mirror*
now that Little Goody Two Shoes is finally out, we know the whole truth about the deal Elise made with the demon, and how she got the Pocket Mirror...
so one of the requierements for Elise's wish to come true was to sacrifice "the good company" which is basically, the love of her life (which she found out too late...). she was too naïve to realize she was being played and so her loved one was fed to the demon.
now, we know the girl who is canonically sacrificed is Rozenmarine (and therefore, the canon girl out of the three you can date in LGTS) because one of the wax records you can listen in Pocket Mirror says this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and in the ending called "Moira" from LGTS (which is the one you get when you choose to date Rozenmarine and sacrifice her) you get the following dialogue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and on top of that, this is the only ending that explains how Elise got the Pocket Mirror for Goldia...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is from her friend Lebkuchen, who is also one of the romanceable girls in the game and unfortunately, it is confirmed their friendship is broken by then :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so yeah. now we also know who the pocket mirror belongs to.
Elise's backstory is more heartbreaking than i originally thought when i played Pocket Mirror. In that game, the whole deal thing sounded like she did it out of pure greediness without thinking about the consequences of her actions. and yeah, she was an idiot for falling for such an obvious trap, BUT she was also a very young and naïve girl who absolutely hated her life, and so when she had the opportunity to leave that life behind she just took it. and when Ozzy (that is, the demon) told her he would take something else in exchange for that, she just came up with something she was sure would never happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it was never her intention to doom Goldia. hell it was never her intention to even have a second kid after she had Henri. but her fate was already sealed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and thus, that's how Goldia's fate came to be...
also rip Rozenmarine :(

Feeling a little sad for Rozenmarine in Lebkuchen/Freya's endings ngl. Spoilers and rambling below:
Of course to start, Not Being Gruesomely Sacrificed is always for the best in the scheme of things, but also: imagine living so much of your life with fate as a compass, being so thrilled to be with your soulmate after years of dreaming about her to the point you know her intimately without having met her, guiding her through a dream you're willing to die for-- and then out of nowhere, in only a week's time, that fate, that dream, is totally averted at the last minute.
Either Elise chooses someone else to die in Rozenmarine's stead and leaves to become a depressed aristocrat, is burned at the stake, or she abandons the ritual altogether and leaves Kieferberg with someone else, and in any case Rozenmarine's whole raison d'etre is gone... I wonder if it's almost worse on a personal level for her if Elise rejects the ritual and chooses someone else, because then what was Rozenmarine even there for? To give Elise the push she needed to leave I suppose, but then what's Rozenmarine to do with her life afterwards? Elise has a different soulmate who she wants to fulfill her dreams with, not her, and the person Rozenmarine says makes her whole is gone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She says she's not necessarily Elise's soulmate even if Elise is hers, and that fate is something than can be changed, so she's certainly aware of other possibilities, but I wonder if she knows what to do with herself if the fate she's been chasing is so directly rejected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even with her happy ending in Star-Crossed where Elise says Rozenmarine 'broke free of her fate' after abandoning the ritual, she feels the need to go out on her own for two and some years and 'grow', learning new skills and taking on a whole career as a chimney sweep before she's ready to meet Elise. It's a bit vague, but she's certainly lost without the same fate that chained her, and needs to find new grounding for herself. As Elise needs to go out and find the world outside Kieferberg, Rozenmarine must go out and find things for herself that aren't Elise before she's ready for their new beginning. Even though she's with Elise as she's always wanted, this wasn't the plan! How much more disruptive it must be to lose that sense of fate without Elise, without any purpose or person to rebuild herself for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And just to twist the knife a bit, Rozenmarine in her own route--as happy as she is to be with Elise at last--expresses her remorse that she couldn't have come to Kieferberg earlier, or even been born there to make memories with Elise and feel like she's part of a community. She pointedly compares herself to Leb and Freya here, which makes me wonder how that envy must extend to endings where they're the apple of Elise's eye. How much more bittersweet an experience it must be to only have that happiness for a week before it's snatched from your hands...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what then becomes of her then when she doesn't show up at all in Leb or Freya's endings (besides, strangely silent, in the background of Auto-da-Fe), when she doesn't have Elise as a tether? Lebkuchen and Freya both appear in one another's happy endings at least, so I think it's intentional. Lost without fate and without her soulmate to aim towards, perhaps it's too much for her to stay on in Kieferberg without Elise after having reached the end of the line on her star-lit path, and so she returns to her nomadic life as a now aimless wanderer, knowing nothing else. Maybe as Elise could never feel like a part of Kieferberg without Holle, Rozenmarine cannot feel a part of them without Elise. More hopefully, perhaps her experience in Kieferberg allows her to reinvent herself as in Star-Crossed, however hard the heartbreak. Rozenmarine characterizes the scales of her treasured pinecone in one of her dates as all part of her path to Elise, but maybe in that same metaphor there's a dot of hope for her she says herself, and there are more scales for her yet to find...

obsessed with the implications that lgts has for the pocket mirror ending of the same name. even if elise didn't go through with the wish goldia still wouldn't be free from Him. her mother received His favor and so did her grandmother before her so of course He would set His sights on goldia. it was inevitable. the cycle never truly ends will it

Guys, I have a theory!
I was rewatching some of the endings of LGTS (like the normal person I am) and I noticed something...
Tumblr media
At the carriage sent by Roman Die Heilige (Elise's husband), there's a symbol at the top. Ozzy's symbol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My first thought would be that it could be an hallucination, but nothing indicates that. Besides, the castle is heavily represented in his domain.
It could be linked to Elise's wish, but that itself doesn't explain why it's painted with Aziel and Murim in front of it on the big painting at the room before the end of the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My theory is that the Die Heilige family already worked for Ozzy and his marquis before. Probably not Roman himself, but someone in the family, and their deal were very important for them to gain more power or more influence at the region.

Out of curiosity, why do you draw a lot of pants Elise?
i just like seeing elise happy and her changing outfits in her happy endings is just really good and shows how much her views and morals have changed. her maturing and becoming a better person and being able to give back to the ppl she loves makes pants!elise an amazing character. it makes the events of pocket mirror even more tragic because she could have led a happy life but she gave into her greed instead :(
also pants!elise is easy to draw lol

i’ll be real with you guys, the little goody two shoes endings left me a bit cold on it. i mean they're not bad per se, just a little half-baked. it feels like most of these characters could be a little bit more interesting. it’s not as thematically coherent as i’d hoped, either - the comment about all characters having their reasons and how they’re complex was kind of only half true. that’s mostly just elise and (arguably) rozenmarine, most others are pretty one-note.
it’s still a good game, especially the aesthetic experience, but i definitely overestimated the themes and character development.
the one thing i still really love is elise herself, as a protagonist. i like that she’s capable of being selfish, even cruel, yet is still sympathetic and compelling in her worst moments.

lgts bad endings/true ending … like i need to play pocket mirror we need more love for women who kind of suck but not in an overtly evil way just through the human way of being selfish and indecisive and ultimately dooming themselves and others around them because of their inability to see past themselves in these crucial moments
